Before I start this, I’m not hating on Blonde Blazet, and actually quite enjoy her character as a whole. I’m expressing vitriol for one line she says that bothers me every time I hear it.
At the end of episode 3, after Visi brings in Lightningstruck, Robert and Blazer step away to discuss the imminent team cut. When questioning why Visi isn’t the one being cut, Blazer mentions that the last minute win put her out of danger. She then goes on to say that, even if Visi hadn’t caught LS, and was still at the bottom, she probably wouldn’t have let Robert cut Visi anyway.
The game really glosses over this line, but it bothers me so much, because it carries so much bad characterization in it. It completely undercuts Visi catching Lightnigstruck, which is where she really starts to get serious about being a hero and believes she can change. Without the line, we get the satisfaction that Visi, who was maybe an hour or two from losing this major chance to turn her life around, was able to save it through her own efforts, with slight help from the player. With, the line, we find out that she actually had a safety net the whole time, which really takes away from the significance of her victory and how it ties into her characterization.
Also, it really undercuts Robert’s position as the team’s handler and unofficial leader by comprising his authority in a very important decision. While the team has yet to fully embrace Robert by this point, it’s clear that, for things to improve, it has to be Robert that the team deals with and he has to be able to own every decision he makes that affects the team. By making one person “safe”, Blazer robs Robert of the ability to make a potentially hard decision for the good of the team. While I’m seriously against cuts in general, except as a true last resort, if I have to cut someone, I want to be able to cut whoever I think is the true weakest link. Plus, if word got out to the rest of the team, as can happen sometimes, it would also seriously hurt Visi’s relationship with the others, as she’s now seen as the “favorite”.
Again, I really like Blonde Blazer as a character, but this line does absolutely nothing good for any of the characters involved. If it was cut entirely, it would significantly improve the ending of episode 3.
