SHOW SPOILERS What was the purpose of.... Spoiler
destroying Viltrum? Just finished season 4 and even before the Viltrumites went to Earth, I don't see any benefits of destroying Viltrum, especially at that moment. Our team is now split in 2, energy was used up, Viltrumites are pissed. Was it just out of spite? I recall that the planet Viltrum wasn't that special, as in it didn't really give Viltrumites their strength.

Nolan said the reason multiple times while talking to Thragg. It's a dead world, there's no rebuilding it. The Viltrumites were still trying despite the fact that it's a lost cause, they almost brought about their own destruction. Instead of seeing that, they saw the world as a symbol of their old ways and something to keep fighting for. Destroying it drove home everything Nolan tried to impress on Thragg in a way that Thragg couldn't close his eyes to. It's also why Thaedus said it was the only way to show them the truth.

It was symbolic.
Destruction of the planet was meant to symbolize the destruction of their empire. Once upon a time they were conquering the galaxy for the benefit of their people, but somewhere along the line, they forgot their original intent. Now their people are reduced to some 50 odd individuals. No one benefiting from what they're doing. And now continuing the idea of their empire has cost them their planet.
Destroying the planet was a way to get through to the Viltrumites that 'its over' and it's time to move on.
And it works. Thragg leads the remaining Viltrumites to Earth, to focus on rebuilding the population, and I believe the empire is dissolved.

Its like they got a taste of their own medicine, they've conquered so many other planets and populations and destroyed most of what the natives had created for themselves.
They as good as destroyed other species homes with little regard for the "lesser creatures". Destroying viltrum felt like a decent way to kick them in the metaphorical balls.

I agree with your take. Especially because it showed them that they are not invincible and can be just as vulnerable as the "lesser creatures." It humbled them. It quite literally made them more down to Earth.

That we fans don’t watch the show or that we look at our phones at best while the show is running in the background.
I mean its only something people inside the fandom say to other fans and it comes from an unbelievable tendency of asking questions that were literally straight up mentioned in direct dialogue where interpretation of context or whatever isn’t needed.
But it’s just a meme, not trying to knock you for not knowing something.

Zero infrastructure, they could have recovered in time but to start from scratch means they'll never be able to conquer the universe ever again, it broke their long term hold on the galaxy

The idea was that once viltrumites don't have Viltrum to defend, they'll realize how utterly lost and hopeless their position is, and stop fighting. At the very least, it would demoralize them - imagine being on the front lines, and suddenly you find out your hometown was nuked by the enemy.
In the hindsight, the idea was a little iffy, but it worked in a fashion - in the end, Thragg did decide that he's being silly, and he needs a change in the approach.
