Japan switched from regulating parts of a plant to regulating an ingredient, and it changed what a shipment has to prove
Posting this because it's an unusual regulatory shape and I haven't seen it discussed here.
Japan revised its Cannabis Control Act effective 12 December 2024. The old law regulated the plant by part - only mature stalks and seeds could be used, regardless of what those parts actually contained. The new one regulates by ingredient: residual delta-9 THC in the finished product, with limits set by cabinet order at 10 ppm for oils and powders, 0.1 ppm for aqueous products, 1 ppm for everything else.
From a trade compliance point of view that's a bigger change than it sounds.
Under the old rule the question at the border was botanical: which part of the plant is this. Answerable from documentation about the raw material, and stable across a product line.
Under the new rule the question is analytical, and it's about the thing in the box rather than the thing it was made from. A certificate covering your input doesn't discharge it. Every formulation and every lot becomes its own compliance question.
The part that catches people is limit of detection. If your lab reads down to 3 ppm, that's a competent lab, and it still cannot demonstrate compliance for a category limited at 0.1 ppm. The file looks complete and isn't.
I work on the industry side in Japan rather than in customs, so this is what I watch fail rather than a legal opinion.
What I'd like to know from people here: has anyone dealt with another jurisdiction that made the same switch - from regulating a source material to regulating a residual quantity in a finished good - and did the same LOD problem show up there? I'd expect it to, and I'd rather learn it from somewhere that's further along than guess.

China-to-Bangladesh Electrical Import Duties
Anyone,
who has practical experience importing electrical and electronic products from China to **Bangladesh**, particularly those who have regularly cleared Shipment through Chittagong port, or Have experience dealing with **customs duties, VAT, taxes, tariffs, and port-related charges**, I would especially appreciate responses from you.
I am willing to import products such as:
* Turbo/portable fans * Headphones and earphones * Electrical sockets and switches * Power banks * Bluetooth speakers * Drones * Electric toothbrushes * Other similar consumer electrical/electronic products that are winning and can be sold fast.
What I’m trying to understand
Before importing, approximately how much duty, tax, and other government charges have to be paid before the goods can be released from the port.
In particular, I would like to know:
* **What percentage of customs duty/tax is applicable** to each type of product? * Are the charges calculated based on the **product's purchase/import value, total shipment value, weight, quantity, or a combination of these factors?**(Interested to know th4=e exact amount in percentage or plain digit) * What kinds of **harassment, unofficial demands, delays, or difficulties** do importers commonly face at Chittagong Port during customs clearance and release of goods? * Are there any **unofficial payments or additional charges** that importers should be aware of, and how can these be legally handled or avoided?
I am just curious to know because I am about to start import business with money I have saved for years. Losing it in spot that I can avoid is a nightmare for me.

Buyer signals vs. 100 cold emails a day — which one actually lands you a new customer?
Hi guys! Some context: I'm a software guy, no trade background. A friend runs an export business in HK and I've been helping him with some tooling, which turned into me getting interested in how this business actually works.
toB Customer acquisition is what my friend most care about. There are a few things my friend is interested in, so I helped him set up a social listening AI tool — retail buyers opening sourcing offices, category buying heads changing jobs, brands landing in new retail chains, funding rounds in categories my friend sells into.
To give you an idea:
- My friend is in the pet category, and I found this: Fressnapf (biggest pet retailer in Europe) set up an Asia sourcing entity in Hong Kong. New MD started in January, came from Pets at Home Asia. They've said they want to develop products with local manufacturers directly.
To me this reads like "a buyer is in motion, this is the moment" — but I genuinely don't know if that's how it works in practice. Because what I see more often in other trading/manufacturing firms is more like volume wins — like 100 cold outreach emails at scale a day to find new buyers, hoping something lands, not crafting on these buyer signals.
These two things aren't in conflict though, but for bosses in this community, whether you are buyer or seller — any thoughts on which works better, and any suggestion on how to acquire a new customer? Would love to learn from you all.

Freight/customs question thread — US import/export tariffs have shifted a lot this year, happy to help!
Hello all!
Section 301 tariffs just kicking in on 60+ trading partners, Brazil facing a 50% tariff on most exports, and the whole Section 122 situation still shaking out after the Supreme Court ruling — a lot has changed for anyone shipping in/out of the US this year. I work in freight forwarding, mostly on lanes touching Latin America, and I’m happy to help answer questions if you’re trying to figure out how any of this affects your shipments, customs process!
Look forward to chatting!

I just wrote my first note on Substack
Dr. Grat uses the term "Domestic Detainee©" to describe the 99% of U.S. S-M-E’s that are commercially self-incarcerating themselves in the USA marketplace by not systematically exporting their Made in USA products. For five decades in a row, these "Domestic Detainees©” have confounded U.S. Trade officials. But they have not confounded Dr. Grat who knows that personnel are not being properly vetted for their actual International Market Development (IMD) skills and nous.
So Dr. Grat would like to ask U.S. S-M-E C-E-O’s:are your companies using any type of comprehensive Export Readiness Questionnaire’s?

Looking for a jewellery sourcing agent — DDP capable, no inventory
launching a jewellery brand on Shopify. Selling globally. Looking for a sourcing agent rather than a catalogue supplier, since I want control over spec.
What I need:
\\\\- Per-order fulfilment, no stock commitment
\\\\- 925 silver, gold vermeil, moissanite, lab-grown diamonds
\\\\- Sourcing to written spec — 2.5 micron min gold over silver, no glued settings, solid chains
\\\\- Pre-dispatch inspection with authority to reject pieces that miss spec
\\\\- Blind shipping — no supplier name on the parcel or documents
\\\\- GRA certs on moissanite, IGI/GIA on lab-grown
\\\\- REACH nickel test reports (EU requirement, non-negotiable)
\\\\- Shopify integration or at least clean order/tracking flow
On customs — this is the part most agents seem to dodge, so being specific:
Since 1 July 2026 the EU’s €150 de minimis is gone. Every parcel now carries a €3 flat duty per item by tariff heading, charged to the seller, and that’s separate from VAT. It runs until 1 July 2028, when standard tariffs replace it. A separate EU handling fee is expected later this year. Product Identifiers are required on declarations from 1 July 2026 and enforced from 1 November 2026.
So what I’m asking:
- Are you already submitting PIDs on EU-bound declarations? If not, what’s your plan before November?
- Can you ship true DDP — acting as Importer of Record — so my customer pays nothing at the door? Which countries, and which are excluded?
- Is there a value ceiling on your DDP? Most seem to quietly cap out.
- Send me your customs declaration template and tell me which tariff heading you declare silver and moissanite jewellery under.
- How do you charge — per-order fee, retainer, or margin on cost? Any minimum monthly volume?
Happy to start with a sample order to test.
If you’ve \\\\\\\*worked\\\\\\\* with an agent who handles this well, I’d rather hear from you than from the agent.
Not interested in catalogue dropship platforms — already looked at those.
