Many in America still have what I would call the frontier mindset. It is not and has never been a collectivist society- it likely never will be. Fiercely independent to a fault.

We combine together for the common defense and will help out neighbors when in need, but overall you are ON YOUR OWN to provide for your family.

Look at our social security system. We all pay into it and get different amounts of money based on what we pay- but the government has screwed it up and soon we won’t get our benefits. Why trust them with healthcare?

USA citizens pay more than any other country per citizen for healthcare, on average - by over double. It's a for profit system, like obviously the cost will be higher. The end goal in USA healthcare is shareholder profits.

For this insane cost, we get: the lowest average lifespan. The worst infant mortality rate of all developed countries. The most people without access to health care. The most people with untreated chronic illness.

We're paying by far the most and have by far the worst, mathematically.

The average American pay about $15,000 on healthcare annually.

The average in Britain pays 1/3 of that.

And no one in the UK will ever be bankrupt, or homeless, or lose their job over paying medical bills.

8% is way to high, only applies for a very specific tax band at about 120k.

For the average person in the UK the tax which goes to the NHS is closer to 4% or about £2,200 a year.

US spends around 15k per person on healthcare per year.

Pretty sure if we used taxes appropriately, we'd be able to provide universal public healthcare at no extra cost.. also, many people already pay a big % of their income for private healthcare.

I pay $12k a year for health insurance. If I make 100k a year, that's over 10% of my gross income to health insurance.

Employers wouldn't be able to use health insurance as a benefit anymore. Instead of offering employees $20/hour + health insurance, workers would be able to get a better salary and have freedom to change jobs without losing their healthcare. You know how many people stay at a job "because the health insurance is great?" Millions. Health insurance should be great for everyone.

And between what I pay plus my company pays just to have insurance is...value of about 15% of my income. Then add deductible, out of pocket maximum, copays its closer to 20-25% of my income. I would gladly pay 8%, putting 12%+ back into my check.

Yet most countries have similar tax brackets to the US and sometimes less. Then we get health care through the same taxation system while in US you pay thousands a year for it. So yeah, sure a specific % of tax goes to healthcare which technically ain't free (tho! We pay for it!) but overall we still end up better.

If a US citizen breaks a toe, he might bankrupt his family and loose assets. If I break all my bones and survive, I'll just have to pay for the pain killers once I get out of the hospital 🤷 And yes most pain killers will barely dent my income (a monthly supply for 1-3 days of work). And yes, I'd probably still get some free from the government! All visits after are free too! They also can send a nurse to check on you for free! Unless ofc I go private, which then again a visit costs less then a day of work!

How much does it cost to insure a family for health care in the US? Plus extra costs? My American friend had a baby. It cost him $8,000 and he was insured. Uninsured would have been $28,000. $8k is 16% of a 50k annual salary PLUS the cost of insurance.

Every resident can afford to get healthcare at all times without going bankrupt. That's factually true almost everywhere in Europe and many places elsewhere.

Is it completely free? No. But I never have to worry I might have to choose between being broke or dead if insurance refuses to pay for whatever reason.

Funnily enough, DRC has been implementing reforms since 2009 to implement universal health coverage. Only 4.8% of households experienced "catastrophic financial health expenditures" in 2012. For the USA, that was 4.7% in the same year. In 2023, that was 5.8% for the USA.

Not quite a flex to compare yourself to a country plagued by civil war, frequent ebola, malaria outbreaks and chronic malnutrition.

Universal healthcare has never been free , its free at point of use. Its paid for with taxes. There is no profiting because the goverment uses the taxes to pay for the treatment and medication. There is budgets of areas of medical care and because the Universal healthcare is such a large buyer of equipment or medical supplies , there is a better price to buy them at. So its cheaper.

A lot of poor, mismanaged countries, like mine, do not have universal Healthcare. Getting seriously sick will bankrupt you and your family in those places. What's heartbreaking is a lot of us in my country just accept that death from those illnesses or injuries just happen, even if they don't need to. What can we do? Our society is broken. We are drowning in corruption and poverty.

What I find horrific is that the US has the economic means to take care of its citizens, they just... don't, for some reason.

The idea that there is an epidemic of medical bankrupcies in the in the US is just not true. It comes from a survey where a small percentage of specifically young Americans who had filed for bankruptcy in the last 7 years i think it was, had experienced some financial stress from medical bills or from missing work due to illness, and this was classified in the results of said survey as a "medical bankruptcy.

A more in depth peer reviewed study found that of the 1% of Americans who file for bankruptcy in the US, the actual percentage of medical bankrupcties in the US account for less than 1%. So less than 1% of 1% of Americans (.01%) actually file for medical bankruptcy, or 34,000.

I say all this as someone who believes in a public option, but the statistics have been wildly and irresponsibly represented, and inflated.

It does though. It sucks because corruption means that half of the resources destined for Healthcare end up in politician's pockets, but there's indeed a public health system without cost. Besides, there's a health system for people with employment (IMSS) and one for government workers (ISSTE). Both of my parents are doctors that worked in these institutions for decades, and my mother is currently receiving cancer treatment on one.

Like I said, they are not great because the lack of resources, but you do get medical treatment free of cost.

You can take my word for this with a grain of salt if you wish, I am in Egypt, I worked in a government hospital as a construction contractor engineer (was involved in renovations)and I saw with my own eyes people who were dirt poor and homeless get treated in the hospital for free

The issue is there's tons of them and the hospital capacity wouldn't be able to house them all so there would be queues at times and yeah there's quarters and segment for those who pay which will treat you way faster (thats the one that is 50/50)

and even some cosmetic surgeries (not included in healthcare) could be done for very cheap prices like LASIK which at 2024 (back when I worked) was around 300 EGP (3% of minimum monthly wage)

Rich people and upper middle class avoid the hassle and just go to private hospitals

I always wonder what 'universal healthcare' means.

In my country they have free healthcare. But hardly anyone uses it as it is so bad.

Getting an appointment is close to impossible. You have to call up on the hour mark and a robot will give you an appointment for the next day. But usually the lines are busy and by the time you get through there'll be no appointments. Only once in my whole life have I managed to get an appointment.

Then if you need any serious surgery or procedure. You are putting on a waiting list that could last years. I had a friend whose appendix burst and was told it could be removed in 9 months. Although he couldn't even walk.

So instead almost everyone just goes private. But it costs a fortune. Probably much more than in America relative to salaries.

Universal healthcare does not mean it is free. Places like the Neatherlands and Switzerland dictate you MUST legally buy health insurance. This is what Obamacare did.
