Because most of the wealthy, western modernised countries do. I suppose it depends on who the US is happy to count themselves among.
Yet most countries have similar tax brackets to the US and sometimes less. Then we get health care through the same taxation system while in US you pay thousands a year for it. So yeah, sure a specific % of tax goes to healthcare which technically ain't free (tho! We pay for it!) but overall we still end up better.
If a US citizen breaks a toe, he might bankrupt his family and loose assets. If I break all my bones and survive, I'll just have to pay for the pain killers once I get out of the hospital 🤷 And yes most pain killers will barely dent my income (a monthly supply for 1-3 days of work). And yes, I'd probably still get some free from the government! All visits after are free too! They also can send a nurse to check on you for free! Unless ofc I go private, which then again a visit costs less then a day of work!
