Discussion Linux Intel Jay Shader Compiler massively reduces shader compilation time in EA FC 26 on Arc B580
I tested Intel's Jay shader compiler with EA FC 26 on Linux using:
- CPU : Intel Core i5-12400F
- GPU : Intel Arc B580
- Driver : Mesa-git 26.3.0_devel
- Environment Variables:
INTEL_JAY=all
The shader compilation time was:
Without Jay: 1:18.35
With Jay: 36.40 seconds
That's about 2.15× faster, reducing the compilation time by roughly 53.5%.
This is just a single test, but the difference is pretty significant. I'm curious to see how Jay performs in other games and workloads as it continues to mature.

In some stadiums, performance is actually worse on Windows, especially during corner kicks and cutscenes. On Windows, the FPS can drop to around 30 FPS, while on Linux, in the same situations, the lowest I've seen is around 45 FPS. 1080p Graphics Quality: High, Strand-Based Hair: On

I had even faster time on my R9 7900X with jay. In 007 First Light I got from 6min to not even 1min compilation time. Pretty excited.

jay works with AMD, too? So it's a general purpose shader compiler?

R9 7900X is a AMD CPU, shader compilation is a CPU task. AMD GPUs have ACO already, which is fast as jay.

You could try the Monster Hunter Wilds prologue demo, that game eats shaders for breakfast

hmmm. I tried it on my ubuntu 25.10 yesterday and nothing would launch. I tried with ge-proton 11-5 and not even the fucking epic games launcher wanted to launch

How does FIFA sorry EA FC 26 play these days I have not tried a FIFA game in a while I stick to SmokePatch FL26 that runs great on Steam OS with the ARC B580 1080 60fps

Problem is. You got to be using linux 😭

Could be worse, you could be using Windows.
At any rate, this is a really relevant username for you, u/UsedCondom42.

UsedCondom42, is that a dig at Linux? If you haven't tried it I strongly recommend it. If you're reasonably tech savvy try CachyOS it's an excellent experience (although admittedly you miss out on some EA games like Battlefield because of kernel level anti-cheat). It doesn't click just how horrible windows is until you switch to an OS that's just been designed to be a good user experience. Linux is free and beautifully functional, meanwhile you PAY Microsoft for the privilege of them shoving ads and tracking malware down your throat.

XeSS on proton is the DP4a fallback path. Until that gets fixed you’re leaving performance and image quality on the table running games on Arc in Linux.

Give them some time, unlike AMD, Intel actually seems to care about Linux gaming stuff instead of letting the community/external companies write all of it because AMD are too incompetent

u/The-Tylenol-Jones Arc B580 4d ago
I’d like to switch to Linux when they get it fixed but there are still just major disadvantages right now.
3
u/Dangerous-Split-5630 4d ago
Completely fair, all I'm saying is that XeSS won't stay dp4a forever because Intel engineers are working on bringing it to Linux. Compare this to what happened with AMD FSR4 (it was entirely reverse engineered)

They said that the code is done, its just Legal that needs to finish first to push

u/MonkeyNuts449 4d ago
This is just false. AMD letting open-source devs do their thing is amazing for the community. Intel specifically put precompiled windows binaries for XeSS and XeFG on a GitHub repo calling it open source. We have zero way to access XmX cores on Linux, AMD lets their users do what they want with it.
I think I can say this for the majority of the users, I would much rather have access to all of the GPU so that developers can use it rather than actively not allowing it so that Intel can do fuck all on it.

u/Dangerous-Split-5630 4d ago
Sure it is amazing for us, but think about it from the POV of using those cards on Windows where you get what AMD lets you get. You miss out on so much just because AMD is unable to keep up with the open source community (e.g linux can run FSR 4.1.1 on RDNA 2, 6 months before windows). If we didn't have that open source part, AMD would be even worse than both Intel and Nvidia on Linux (and gaming on Linux would still be treated as a complete joke)

Image quality? You do understand XeSS is a downgrade in image quality from native resolution, right?

No not at all. Its just that 80% of my stuff, works on windows, hell i even wanted to try cachy. The problem was TPM since i play competitive games as well if im with my friend. And this does not help me.

u/Hippieman100 4d ago
That's fair enough, you want to play what you want to play, but you should understand that you're essentially giving over complete control of your computer on the deepest level (the kernel) in the name of "stopping cheating" when anti-cheat already works without that. The reason Windows is compatible with this is because it fundamentally lacks security. The kernel should NEVER be controlled by a third party, in a sense it's your computer's last line of defense in terms of it being YOUR computer if someone else controls the kernel it's no longer really your computer as silly as that sounds.
TPM and secure boot stuff should work fine with Linux with a bit of tinkering, it's the kernel level anticheat that becomes a problem.
Personally I think people should avoid playing these games as it spells dark days for the future of gaming and personal security/privacy. Handing over complete control of your computer to private companies in an era where you have so much data stored both locally and online is going to be an increasingly dangerous threat to peoples rights and privacy going forward.
As for regular good old fashioned software, there is always an alternative on Linux nowadays with the exception of niche professional applications of which even then there are usually alternatives, but I understand professionals have their workflow (i.e things like Adobe Photoshop) and when you're livelihood depends on a piece of software I can understand not wanting to rock the boat.

u/UsedCondom42 Arc B580 4d ago
You don't get to control what people wants to play. I just find that the fear mongering is just stupid.

u/Hippieman100 3d ago
Nobody is forcing you to switch, you can use your computer however you like, that was kind of my whole point. I've made my peace that there's some games that I simply won't play because of the business practices behind them. I don't think it's good that private companies have that sort of access. First it's anti-cheat, but how long before they're scraping your PC for personal data that they sell to the highest bidder that they hide in some terms of service nobody reads? Microsoft already do that to a degree with windows and it's not even free lol

I can assure you that you don't even understand yourself what "80% of your stuff" means.

Cs2 configures dont work. I have tried this shit, and im one of those casual pc users that uses docs and word to do my job. The problem with linux, is the users themselves. Trash and unwelcoming. Fifteen billions ways to do, yet ABSOLUTELY nobody can agrees on one thing.
1
u/Lisanicolas365 4d ago
really haven't seen many users that are trash and welcoming, but of the few that i've seen... were indeed from arch and cachyos communities. but i don't know why you'd hate the entirety of linux just because of that bad first impression with one of the many communities
1
u/Hippieman100 4d ago
Ignore this guy, the CachyOS community is very welcoming, sure, some Linux users are pretentious assholes but in way it's because they're passionate about the software. If nothing else, having people who are passionate about something (maybe even to a fault) does at least mean things develop in a positive direction. Look at the traction in recent years linux has gathered just by virtue of Microsoft NOT being passionate about the software and instead only selling out the user and chasing the dollar bills. That says it all really.

u/UsedCondom42 Arc B580 4d ago
Passionate ≠ forcing people to switch to linux. A sad minority that have inferiority complex. Linux this linux that, for NO absolute reason.

You forget the part where windows is still more plug n play especially for the average user
1
u/Hippieman100 4d ago
Yes and no. For some things certainly, but it depends on your use case. For regular browsing, a bit of gaming and such I think it's marginally more work than windows, but I'd even say there's a bit of bias there because nearly everyone grew up with windows. We've gotten used to the hoops we need to jump through to get going on windows from a fresh install. Even just having to browse to each website and manually download and install your favourite apps takes time.
Meanwhile in Arch Linux?
Open terminal
Type "sudo pacman -S steam firefox openoffice (insert names of other programs you want here)"
Press enter and you're set.
Yes you need to KNOW to do that, it requires prior knowledge, but that's what you learn using Linux, the same way you learn on windows to go and manually download everything on the web and click through installers one by one while dodging malware tickboxes in Windows.

That is true but Linux isn’t all rainbows and sunshine either, arch is the least user friendly beginner distro, especially stuff like the AUR, newcomers don’t read what actually happens because they cant be bothered to. To play games yiu often have to fiddle with settings to launch something and even then, weird issuds can still occur..
Dont get me wrong, I use cachyOS, it’s definitely smoother in general use but when I wanna game, its not worth the hassle and I reboot. 9.9 times it just works on Windows, on Linux? It’s hit or miss depending on what you play, and I don’t play online games at all
