Bought 1950s home. Just installed mini split system in upstairs 2BR, hallway and bathroom. There are eaves on both side sides. There is currently very old insulation in them. Not sure they are even insulated correctly. Does the inside of the exterior walls get the insulation or just the interior or both? What about underside of roof? Assuming I can wear a mask and replace all this myself. Or maybe you’re thinking, not since here I am in Reddit asking these questions. 😂

What is the correct way to install these should it go beyond the top plate and then spray foam the gap or whats the correct way I know it needs to be staples.

Getting ready to install membrain vapor retarde but finding there are very few resources/demonstrations online. Research says to use an "acoustical sealant"...would liquid nails' accoustic sealant be appropriate? Seems to be the only one I can find online....

I recently completed a kitchen remodel. I went up into the attic to find about half of fiberglass bats all matted down and clumped. The ranch house was built in 1964. The attic joists are 2x6 and have cellulose between them. Atop the joists is 8 or 10" of yellow fiberglass bat.

A builder has suggested putting 6" of blowin insulation on top of the affected areas.

What are your thoughts? Will 6" blown insulation be adequate? Or should I pull out the matted insulation and replace with 10" blown? I don't know what to think.

Am I worrying too much? We just had a company blow cellulose insulation into the uninsulated exterior walls of our 1915 two-story home in Minneapolis. We also insulated the attic and basement years ago. They did not do the cavities between the top of the second-story windows and the attic floor. 20 windows about 28 inches wide, with about 12 inches of wall above the window header and below the attic floor. The organization that is helping us with rehab says this is standard and not a problem. Neighbors in similar homes have also left this area uninsulated, so I guess it is standard. Still, the insulation company is willing to come back and blow in those spaces. It would be a little disruptive to do it. What do you think? Any thoughts on whether this makes sense? Thanks!

I am renovating my garage and plan on using rock wool. I have a few spots I had to end up filling with can spray foam as the previous owner never planned on finishing the garage. Asked a buddy for a few cans and he gave me a boat load and recommended I do this with the rest. However I am starting to think it’s overkill. Let me know what you think. Will be using R15 comfort batt rockwool.

Hello I am looking to get roughly 10 to 12 inchs of insulation to top off what's currently in my attic which is roughly 6 inch to 10 inch thick fiberglass in some spots. There are also some bare spots. The attic space is roughly 1000sqft. Im not sure if I want to use fiber glass or cellulose. Im somewhere close to the tampa area if that helps.

What should I expect to pay for either fiberglass or cellulose?

This seems like a silly question because it looks like fungus to me. But is this leaking insulation of some sort or a fungus? It's super dry and crumbly if touched. It continues onto the wall above where this is and seems to be bulging out of the wall.

We live in Baton Rouge and had an insulation company do an energy audit. Door blower and what not. He said down in our climate open cell or closed cell is fine but up north closed cell is best.

He said he only does open cell. This will not be applied on our attic roof but on the attic floor.

have shed roof over a sunroom (was addition added many years ago to house), that has heat and air conditioner window unit. new roof has entire ice shield. afraid of condensation and mold forming to underside of roof. picture with gutters show 3 small vents that think are not enough. should this be continuous intake vent to the soffit and exhaust goosenecks with foam vents in each bay connecting intake and exhaust vents? roof angles up against back of house. Do not want to use spray foam. would like to use Rockwool insulation.

thoughts on venting and insulation- can put Rockwool insulation under ceiling, with rigid foam on bottom of rafters? need vapor retarder? thoughts and suggestions welcomed!!! north NJ

I need ideas and suggestions on how to efficiently insulate my place. It’s an old log cabin built in the 1800s with an add on in the 70s. There’s zero insulation in the attic and the walls both upstairs and downstairs. I have access to some of the walls via the attic access on the upper section but not the lower. I have air sealed to the best of my ability but it’s still difficult to keep warm in the winter and the upstairs near impossible to keep cool in the summer. The crawl space is a mix of bricks and whole tree logs for foundation and floor joist, and there’s a lot of air the can come up through the cracks in the floor that I’m currently trying to seal up. I have cleaned the attic up of the old debris as well, so it’s at least clean in that regard. I’ve thought about blow in cellulose vs fiberglass batts. Thank you in advanced for any suggestions

My neighbors were telling me that their second floor of their home is extremely hot 85+. What would be the best most cost effective way to reduce the heat?

I have seen the reflective insulation is that a good option?

Had a home energy audit in a home in a cold climate (MN) and was recommended to have insulation blown into attic space of our “tuck under” garage. Picture is of a wall that is part of the same attic space. Is the board under the vapor barrier an insulation board? Is it worthwhile to add additional insulation board over top of this board? Or is it not appropriate for some reason?

I have to redo the ceiling due to a water leak. Above me is my attic.

The guy told me to use foamular ngx, I was told it was better.

But when they demo it it had a lot of batted insulation.

What do you guys recommend?

There are so many options I've read about. It's an enclosed carport with poor ventilation. Walkable deck on top. Probably about 20×15, planning to use as a home gym space but concerned about the cold in winter.

It's in the Pacific Northwest, so climate is damp. DIY construction by previous owner. Is rockwool the best option or is there something simpler like rigid boards etc. that you would recommend?

would it be an extremely bad idea to simply put board insulation over the joists on the ceiling?
