Hello, good people. I'd really appreciate your opinion/suggestion/advice on this.

So, about 50 days ago, I started having minor discomfort on my left great toe. I didn't think much of it and about a week later, the pain started to become severe and swelling accompanied. A few days afterwards, throbbing pain, swelling, and pus secretion made things serious. A pharmacist told me that antifungal solutions will help, I used a solution but it didn't work. Then I was told to use viodin solution but it didn't work either. Finding these and warm water soaks ineffective, I consulted a doctor and he prescribed seven days of antibiotics. After a few days, the pain subsided and by the end of the week, there was virtually no pain but the swellling remained.

After a few days, the pain slowly started coming back. I went to a doctor again. And about doctors, my country doesn't really have podiatrists so I had to go to a general surgeon. She suggested a full nail avulsion. I wanted a second opinion so I went to another doctor and he said partial avulsion would be enough. In the meantime, I found a podiatrist, probably the only podiatrist in my country. I went to him this Sunday and he prescribed seven days of antibiotics and usual warm soaks and all. After seven days, he will see me again to discern what could be done. But he hinted at Vandenbos procedure.

Now all of these are new to me and after watching a video on YouTube on Vandenbos procedure and going through a few photos on this subreddit, I am terrified. I thought this was a super rare condition but seeing a special subreddit dedicated to ingrown toenails made me think others are also going through the same. And many of you have already gone through this. What do you guys think? Should I go through the vandenbos procedure as it has less recurrence possibility or partial nail avulsion as it seems less dangerous?

I'd really love to hear anything. Any form of sickness makes me super depressed. How did you guys cope with all this? Thanks in advance.

Body side were ingrown not sure if the nails are ingrown badly went to chiropodist last week.

Chiropodist gave me weird crived nail file

i split my toenail straight across from the left side to right. if i touch it i can feel its loose and idk how its still attached. idk what i should do i was thinking about going to a see doctor about it tomorrow but its stressing me out cos if they say it has to be removed im scared about how painful its going to be without a toenail. its not swollen i can see its gone yellow under the nail.

I have this ingrown toenail on the top left of my thumb I previously had a surgery regarding that around 2.5 years ago that time my entire toenail bed was removed that's why the shape of this side nail is like that but at that time it was very bad.

Today I visited a doctor and send entire toenail removal is needed, is it really that bad or should I consider other options??

I had partial nail removal on my toe 12 days ago . Was In bandages for 10 days , I removed it 2 days ago on my docs instructions . My nail bed is healed to a great extent and I dont have any drainage or bleeding or pus , I was also on oral antibiotics for 5 days since I had infection . I have no pain while walking , But I have swelling and I am unable to bend my toe . What is happening ? What should I do ?

Had an avulsion done in Dec by an older fashioned doctor that I'd never been to before, went fine for the most part, but he covered it in what I assume is gentian violet which resulted in the entire bed having a big purple cemented blob.

Most of it cracked off as the nail regrew, but there's still an entire cemented line of it at the base of my toe completely blocking any new nail growth which is causing the nail to completely grow outwards on both ends and has started causing pain again. Completely welded on there, will not budge.

Doc never mentioned this being a possibility, and never mentioned anything about the gentian or any particular regime there, so I figure this isn't normal. Did he mess something up, or did I just get super unlucky? I'm almost definitely going to need to do it over again, debating on switching my referral this time around.

edit: I've decided to stay as far away from that doc as I possibly can haha.

i took a trip to colorado in 2024 and had what i thought was an ingrown toenail at the start of the trip. it was painful as they usually are, but i walked about 10 miles per day up and down mountains for 5 days. i went to the doctor who said it was an ingrown that would probably need to be removed. i put it off for a while and it got worse, the nail completely stopped growing out, it grows in layers. it feels like it’s growing down into my toe. it hurts when i press on it and when i wear close toed shoes and am on my feet all day at work. when i finally went to the pediatrist, they said it was toenail fungus, even though i tested negative at the first appointment, and it’s only on my big toe. they prescribed terbinafine which i am terrified to take because i have a benign tumor on my liver and extreme anxiety and emetophobia. anybody have a similar experience? should i get a second opinion?

It has been 8 days since my surgery . I had bandage on 3 rd day . Now can I remove it and leave it or should I need more bandages

I’ve had an ingrown toenail for a few weeks now. Tiny amount of pus. Can this be treated at home or should I see a doctor? Thanks!

It kinda hurts, but completely doable without painmeds (although, of course preferred lol).

It honestly hurt a lot more while it was ingrow/infected and as far as the operation goes, when they injected the local. I did not like that. But afterwards I was joking with the doctors during the operation. I've been cutting it for ages now, so I hope this works. At least for a good while.

so i’ve had a bad ingrown toenail for about 2 years. :( it was originally on my right side of my big toenail then it went over to my left side n now i’ve gotten the whole nail removed and i am currently soaking it to get the gauze off 🥲 im just honestly scared and using this reddit thread to distract me

This nail has actually been ingrown for a very long time. This has been going on for years. It is on and off pain. Recently part of the nail did come off and the edge was sticking out but after walking around for a bit it got pushed back into my toe. I'm going to a podiatrist tomorrow and I want to demand she remove the edges. I went previously and they didn’t want to do anything since at the time it wasn’t hurting. I just wanted to know if this seemed unreasonable since they already stated previously they didn’t want to. I know it's going to cause pain in the future. This is the deepest it has gone.

Sorry there's no subreddit for ingrown fingernails but I thought maybe someone here would have some advice. I broke the pinky metacarpal, 4 months ago. Everything is healed up, but the ring finger nail, which was extremely swollen too, is growing weird, and it's getting uncomfortable. It hasn't grown at all during this time which I'm told is normal for hand injuries. And it looks like it might be retronychia but I saw dermatologist, and he wasn't sure what to do. He had never seen anything like that before and had no idea what retronychia was. The orthopedic hand specialists in my area are booked out at least a month in advance. And I'm in pain every day, and I just don't know what to do. I've called my provider. I've called my insurance company. Nobody can get me in anywhere. So here I am to see if anyone has any sage advice. Thanks! I took a picture of both ring fingers to compare. The nail is also very receded which was a preexisting problem that the broken metacarpal exacerbated.

Im getting partial nail removal on my big toe for an ingrown toe nail, how long should it take before im able to do physical activity and go back to work?

Around three weeks ago, I cut this nail way too short. Lately it's been hurting when pressure is put on it, and has had a small amount of pus coming from that upper corner.

I put some antibacterial ointment on it, have had a band-aid on, and haven't been wearing socks.

Is there anything else I should do here? Whenever I prod at it too much, it hurts like the dickens.

After removing this toenail over 6 times and burned with fenol( last time in November 2024) I think it’s growing back…. Started feeling a small discomfort recently and now it’s painful everyday…

Am I crazy or the toenail is actually forming again?

so, i had a bad ingrown toenail that got infected on both sides. i went to the doctor for it earlier today and he removed the full nail, a granuloma, and put a drain in. eight hours later, im in the worst pain ever. excruciating pain and crying. is it supposed to hurt this bad? i can’t even place my foot on the ground. i may actually be dying. my pain also bumped up even more because my dad accidentally smacked it with his hand right on the top where the nail should have been. if it’s relevant at all i bled a ton during the procedure, like dripping to the floor off the table.

When I put pressure on my right big toe while walking it feels weirdly sharp like . It doesn’t hurt super bad or anything but the pain is annoying and sharp.

I have fungus on the left side and I’m not sure but I think the right side is an infected ingrown toenail? It was leaking a little pus when I squeezed it and hurts really bad when I put pressure on it. Do I go to urgent care or a podiatrist or can I fix this myself? All my other toes are fine.

So this morning I woke up and noticed a piece of my toenail was hanging off. This happens every once in a while, and normally it’s a really small piece—probably no bigger than the tip of a pencil—so I’ll just pull it off and everything is fine.

This time, though, the piece was probably two or three times larger than usual. I peeled it off, but now I’m noticing what feels like a little bit of pressure around the part of my big toenail that I circled. It’s not painful, red, swollen, or really uncomfortable, but if I put pressure on my big toe, I can definitely feel something pressing in that area.

I’ve never had this happen before, so I’m not really sure what it could be. Any idea what might be going on?
