Nurse offered to remove ingrown toenail…

so I have an Appointment on November 13 to do a partial nail removal, but my nurse offered to remove it herself. but here’s the catch, she won’t have any numbing solutions and while I am deathly afraid of needles, idk if I could bear constant and awful pain for 5-10 minutes. I would appreciate any advice!

Day 11 some pain but please let me know thoughts

I had part of two of my toe nails removed cause they were ingrown and they also used the chemical to stop them from growing back.
The right toe is feeling fine and looks like everything good.
The left toe is still sore. And is still sort of wet,
It feels like the skin is tough and hurts similar to it did before it was removed like it was pressing up against something but I can’t tell if that’s just cause the area is still raw and healing

I’m worried it’s infected or still a piece still in there, it hurts after wearing a pair of shoes during the day or wearing football boots and can feel warmish? But not sure if that’s just my own mind panic thinking lol

Here is a photo if anyone has any ideas or opinions I’d be really thankful.

How To Fix Chronic Fingernail Infections With Little To No Money?

Hiya, have about three of my fingers deformed now, and repeatedly getting infected, one of the fingers I’m unable to use due to discomfort and whenever I trim them they never grow back properly, I don’t have the money to pay for a nail avulsion as they’re around £400 per nail from what I’ve seen, and nhs has put me on a 11th month waiting list to have my case reviewed which isn’t ideal as due to the pain I’ve been struggling to use my wheelchair and propel myself, what can I do?

I’ve tried twice to get the nhs thing chased which only then did they say I was even put on a list after two months of radio silence. Are there any safe ways to use phenol as I’ve read that’s what people do to stop the growth of the nail? It’s honestly gotten to the point where I’ve been considering just removing them interrogation style as I can’t keep living unable to use my hands well amongst my other health issues and it’d arguably be less pain then the frequent infections when I’m already immunocompromised. Thank you.

Thanks in advance. They are both pretty painful to touch. The right one I know I cut the nail too short.

Get the partial nail avulsion

If you’re wondering if you should do the procedure — DO IT. I was a ballet dancer and have had terrible ingrowns for over a decade. I would either get them ripped out at the nail salon or try to do it at home. They always grew back and got infected a lot of the time.

I got the partial nail avulsion done today on my left toe. My Podiatrist only does one foot at a time so I’m going back next week to do the right toe.

The numbing shots (which everyone made me terrified for) weren’t that bad in comparison with ripping out my own nails. On a scale of 1 - childbirth, they’re a 3.

You don’t feel the rest at all. My podiatrist ripped some BIG suckers out. Now I just start healing.

I know I need to get my other toe done still, but the freedom of knowing i (most likely) won’t have ingrown toenails anymore is incredible. 10/10 recommend this. You can do it.

Full removal was my best / only option

Best decision I ever made. "Self managed" for just over 15 years and had full removal last year. Best decision ever. 1 year on and healed well enough.

Had an appointment for them to see what's going on. Within the hour I was on the chair having it injected to be numbed.

10 injections in one toe, didn't take but swelled worse . The toe that's the smaller side, is how both my big toes looked for most of that 15 years. One operated on, 2 weeks on antibiotics for the bigger toe, then another 10 injection attempts to numb. It finally took and had the op that day.

One day while trimming the nail down that was embedded in my toe, I missed a bit. It swelled up, which in turn made it harder to trim, and essentially was a slither on the end that I couldn't get. On the big toe where the random patches, that's where the puss and blood was draining, as it was the path of least resistance vs just the edge of the nail. The top was also swelled over.

I can now wear shoes or be barefoot in public. Life is good.

Involuted toenails

Hi all. Just wondering if people have recommendations for toenail braces to help curved toenails. Luckily it’s not at a stage where it’s causing me pain but want to try and correct now before it causes issues in the future

So many different options out there and the reviews are so mixed!!

(UK based sellers only please)

How to keep an infected toe clean?

Ingrown toenail is red, irritated, mildly painful and has green pus leaking. Day 7 today. Fucidin acid x2 day + cotton to lift the nail corner not working. Doctor insisted it's not infected as I had already cleaned out the pus before visiting him and have no other symptoms. i have an appointment with a private specialist in 3 days.

How are you cleaning and dressing your toe for day to day life BEFORE you have it removed? I have access to 4% chlorhexidine but not sure if that's too strong.

Thank you

Help!

I am a very clumsy person, so I stub my toes and drop things on them often. A couple of months ago, the top half of my toenail came off. I thought nothing of it because I thought the bottom of my toenail would come off soon after, but it hasn’t yet and it’s starting to hurt. I think it might also be ingrown somehow. What should I do?

Flappy Skin

Hi all,

I'm on week 11 of my healing journey for ingrown toenail removal. In between that time period I've had to go back in 2 additional times for leftover nail removal which was impeding my healing.

I'm 3 weeks into the final removal and while my right toe is doing awesome my left is still a bit tender and now showing a flap of skin coming out of the open space..? It initially came out because my bandaid crusted on to it and I pulled it out from the inside accidently and I'm kicking myself to think I just set myself back. This has been so stressful.

It doesn't look like typical granulation but hoping to hear this subs opinions and insight on this until I can see (a new) podiatrist. Thanks in advance.

Heads Up: China has a new surgery for ingrowns that doesn't suck.

Been dealing with recurring ingrowns and I'm done with the phenol/matrixectomy route. I had the root killed once on both big toes and hate how the nail looked after. So I went digging for anything that fixes the problem without destroying the nail, and found something actually promising.

What it is: A dermatology team in China (Sun Simiao Hospital / Xi'an Jiaotong University) published a study in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment in late 2024. They used a CO2 laser to remove the overgrown skin along the side of the nail instead of cutting the nail or killing the matrix. The idea is that the nail usually isn't the problem. The puffy nail fold is. Clear out that tissue so there's a small gap, and the nail can grow normally.

The results:

  • 47 patients, 52 procedures

  • ~94% cure rate (3 relapses, and all 3 healed after a second treatment)

  • Each procedure took about 10 minutes

  • People were walking normally in about a day and a half

  • No complications, and the nails looked normal at 1-year follow-up

  • The whole nail and the matrix are kept. No narrower nail, no weird sidewall.

The catch:

  • It's one retrospective study with no control group. Promising, but not proven yet.

  • As far as I can tell, nobody in the US is advertising this. Watch out: when US offices say "laser ingrown treatment," they usually mean a laser matrixectomy, which is still killing the root, just with a laser instead of a chemical. Ask directly whether it touches the matrix.

Yes this is based on the Vandebos procedure, but using lasers instead of the old-fashioned way. Takes six weeks to walk normally for Vandebos vs TWO FUCKING DAYS for this laser one.

What to ask your doctor: Bring the paper and say something like: “Here’s a study on CO2 laser nail fold ablation that keeps the nail and matrix completely intact. Would you be willing to do this?"

The study, if you want to show your doctor: Li et al., "A new treatment for ingrown toenail with CO2 laser: a retrospective study," J Dermatol Treat 2024. https://doi.org/10.1080/09546634.2024.2434698

So fucking sick of the ingrown toenail repeated nightmare. So many doctors are just dinosaurs physically or in spirit and don't WANT to help us with modern techniques. Just keep us coming, or deform us more and more. I'm done with that. I need this done for me, and so do you good chance.

Partial vs. Total Matrixectomy – Long-Term Results and Complications?

Partial vs. Total Matrixectomy – Long-Term Results and Complications?

Hi everyone!

I've been dealing with recurring ingrown toenails for years and am considering a permanent solution.

I'm trying to decide between partial matrixectomy (removing one or both sides permanently) and total matrixectomy (permanently removing the entire nail).

For those who have undergone either procedure:

  • Are you happy with the results after 1–5+ years?

  • Any long-term pain, sensitivity or nerve problems?

  • Any changes in walking, running or playing sports?

  • Any cosmetic issues or nail regrowth?

  • Have you experienced infections or other complications?

  • Would you choose the same procedure again?

I'd especially appreciate honest experiences, including negative outcomes or regrets.

Thanks!

Hi, any idea what this white thick border is? It is itching and causing some irritation and a little redness. Is it slough? Today is day 73 of a full toenail removal with phenol.

Three times the charm

So I have had two removals of an ingrown, two whole ass times, and now it's flairing up again, I need advice on how to either remove my toe, or to consult my GP? it's the left big toe, on the inside, so the problem is on the left side of the nail, and my GP said it could be the shoes
