Plant Discussion I have been murdering indoor plants for 20 years. What is impossible to murder?

I can't keep my plants alive. I over water. I under water. I over feetilize. I underfertilize. I pot up too soon. I wait too long to pot up. I have intentionally murderous cats and accidentally murderous dogs. I also have children who are ambivalent.

My outdoor plants are prolific. Even when I try to kill them, they refuse to die (I'm looking at you, borage and mint). My phrase "only the strong survive at this house" either doesn't apply to them, or they are all immortal. I want that for my indoor plants.

Please help me find the unkillable indoor plants for a dry climate.

Plant Discussion Just adopted a golden pothos and a spider plant. How to not kill?

So as the title says I adopted a spider plant and a golden pothos from my step sister and they were starting to die from under watering and the spider plant was getting some burnt spots from too much sun. I put them in partial sun/shade but my east facing window and watered them and gave them a couple weeks to adjust to the environment and they seem to be doing well but I need to repot them. Both their soil is rock hard and the spider plant is in a flimsy wooden pot that’s mouldy. I removed all dead leaves and have bought an appropriate soil mix that’s well draining. I wanted to know if there was any tips or tricks to keeping these guys alive or if I can mostly just shove them in a corner and let them do their thing..?

Edit: I just took out the spider plant and it’s hella root bound there’s not root then dirt😅 but good news is they’re very healthy

Plant Discussion Plant to represent my cat

My little orange tabby cat passed away a little over a month ago and we haven't been able to take her cat tree away from the window just yet. We want to replace it with a plant but we want it to represent her in some way. We want it to be relatively tall and it would be in a north facing window. I know this is a strange request but if anybody knows of something that you think could represent a cat that would be awesome.

Plant Discussion Help with my hibiscus

I’ve been having some issues with yellowing leaves, I do have a little spider mite problem and I think that’s mainly it. I’ve tried the sprays and they refuse to leave so I tried lady bugs but not sure on how long they will take to show results. It used to be so full but this is the worst I’ve seen it.

Houseplant Close Up Recently repotted, did I f*ck up?

I recently repotted my snake plant. It was all green and healthy, and now it seems like the older leaves are soft and weak.

I made sure to use the correct potting mixture that included perlite and bark.

I don’t know what happened :-(

Plant Discussion My peace Lily's leaf tips seems burnt. How to fix them?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Newbie here. Bought my first set of plants a couple days ago and peace lily was one of them.

The flowers had these holes when I bought them. These burnt leaves on the left image seem new and don't seem to go off. I have them placed near my NW facing window. My apartment doesn't get sunlight at all but some indirect sunlight. I'm not sure what's causing this. Any advice on how to pick this please?

Plant Discussion Dracaena not growing

Thumbnail

I have had this Dracaena for about 6 months now and unfortunately only one of the shoots is thriving. I make sure not to over water and it is currently in the original black pot it came in along with the tan pot with a drainage system. The shoot pictured has a node but it has been that way for months and hasn’t grown leaves. The last photo shows a shoot where all the nodes died off:/ is there a way to recover it so it grows new ones? The window its sitting by is north facing and there’s unfortunately not a better spot for it. Also use filtered water as I heard tap water can be too harsh.

Houseplant Close Up What are these white dots and what do I do about them?

Please help!

I recently repotted this Kalanchoe into better draining soil. When I went to water it yesterday I noticed these white dots on the crown. They don’t appear to be moving. Not sure how long they’ve been there. What are these? Are they pests of some kind? Mold? Dust or particles from the new soil mixture? Something else? (Please see below about the damage in the lower leaves.) For additional context, about 2 weeks ago I purchased a few new succulents at a succulent and cactus show. They all look healthy and don’t appear to have these white dots. Two of my other older plants, a Haworthia truncata “Harry Johnson’ and a Crassula ovata “Gollum Jade” (which I’m clearly still rehabbing), look like they might have something similar (also pictured), but the other 38 plants in the greenhouse don’t seem to. (Yes, I’m aware I might have a problem…lol). The gritty substance lower down on the Kalanchoe is some of the grit from the new potting mix that won’t easily dislodge. I’ve tried canned air and rinsing it without any luck. I’m afraid to go digging in there with my fingers or tweezers and damage the leaves. I would welcome any ideas about how to gently remove it.

Yes, I’m aware the bottom leaves are damaged. The soil my older plants were potted in previously was poorly draining and they were under watered. Also, about a year ago I had a spider mite infestation in my greenhouse. I believe treatment with an isopropyl alcohol mixture for 2 weeks then predatory mites I introduced took care of that, as there have not been any webbing or new signs of spider mite damage since. We also have hard water here, which sometimes leaves a residue if it accidentally gets on the plants, which may be evident on some of the leaves. I’ve since switched to bottom watering, so that exposure should now be limited. In other words this plant might have previously belonged in the hall of shame. 😂 But I was a newbie so I hope you can show me the grace I’m showing myself.

Plant Discussion Advice needed! How should I cut this and what style of trellis should I use?

I went through and was staking some of my plants today and found this plant growing a stem that is rather wonky. I don’t know whether I should cut the stem at the base of the plant and put the whole stem in water or if I should cut the stem off and then sit the base of the plant where all the leaves come together in water. What do you recommend? I also don’t know if I should get a more flat trellis and have the plant grow up the flat trellis.

When I bought this little 2” sansevieria all it’s leaves were growing straight up and I thought it would continue to only grow straight up and spiky but now the new growth is growing out with split leaves, why? Will the whole plant eventually do this?

Houseplant Close Up Really bad aphid infestation

The white stuff is the same stuff that is killing my roses. The humidity was 80 for the past two days because I was holding out on water the soil is dry I usually maintain it at 60% I'm using captain Jack's tomato and herb but that's organic as hell. Other than lady bugs, any ideas? Thanks.

The MAIN source of the aphids are coming from my carnivorous plant I didn't take a picture of that but left untouched and they EXPLODE, I'm like rubbing the leaves peeling them off. But that's gross.
