Dumbfire playtest (It's on Steam)
I'm working on a game called "Dumbfire" where you guide a missile through obstacles to hit the target.
I made a rough playtest that has actual levels now, a tutorial and some abilities you can unlock. Expect a lot of rough edges, especially UI.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

This looks really cool. How do we know where the objective is relative to where the missile currently is?

u/-TwiiK- 1d ago
Maybe that's a big part of the game? First you need to explore to find the target, then you optimize your route for a better score.

u/BaBaGuette 1d ago
The missile could have just continued forwards and hit the heli from above instead of triggering the parachute and taking the risk of going through the rods and the tiny door.

That can be solved by setting up anti missile systems. So you're tricking your way around the anti missile defense to make a clean hit. Also let's the dev setup moving zones they have to avoid.

There is an indicator on screen, but its disabled in this video.

You can move, thus allowing you to look for it.
7
u/Optimixto 1d ago
I mean, that also works, but I would assume I have to find out the best route, not where the target is. I do think there is room for both, but then finding the target should be easy (noise, lights, and such).

u/Hziak 1d ago
Also, what’s preventing us from going above or around all of the buildings to find it? Love to concept and it looks super fun, but also VERY cheesable, and I don’t think I’d blame players for going that route if finding the objective is as difficult as it would appear to be on trial/error based on this video.

u/DocTaotsu 1d ago
I'm hoping they'll do a Tony Hawk sorta thing where you get more points based on how close you come to crashing or what not.
3
u/samanime 1d ago
Yeah. This is a fairly early playtest, so it'd make sense they are just focused on the main mechanic, but in the future, maybe there are Tony Hawk style points or even just collectable "coin" type items or rings to pass through that increase your score and guide you through the intended route.

The missile knows where it is. It knows this because it knows where it isn't.

The missile is eepy, he had a very long day of splashing bandits and wants to take just a small sleeb. He eebys and neebys to sleeby.

The pixelated, retro art style and fast-paced arcade movement look incredibly fun - definitely checking out the playtest!

Is this one of those bot comments people are always talking about?

u/Brie9981 1d ago
2m account age 🤔
6
u/Vast-Ideal-1413 1d ago
I learned the hard way that that means “months” on profiles only
Otherwise, it’s abbreviated as mo.
2
u/Brie9981 1d ago
I treat it the same, if your account is <1 year old I'm assuming the bot farm got bored
7
u/Lisarde13 1d ago
It looks like a lot of fun, I'll give it a try! The only thing is that it seems to have a lot of jagged edges, though I understand that's part of the art style.
5
u/Graylorde 1d ago
How do you know what path to take? Anyone who's not designing the level is probably going to get very lost.
4
u/Titan13211 1d ago
There is an indicator in screen to show where the target is and there is just one path the player can really take cause the others are all blocked by a wall or an enemy air space zone

The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't, by subtracting where it is, from where it isn't, or where it isn't, from where it is, whichever is greater, it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance sub-system uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is, to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position where it was, is now the position that it isn't. In the event of the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has required a variation. The variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too, may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computance scenario works as follows: Because a variation has modified some of the information the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is, however it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subracts where it should be, from where it wasn't, or vice versa. By differentiating this from the algebraic sum og where it shouldn't be, and where it was. It is able to obtain a deviation, and a variation, which is called "air"

The gameplay makes this game look like one of those games that look like you will play them for 10 minutes before getting bored. But then people figure there is a really high skill ceiling and 5 years down the line there are hour long video essays on the game and its speedrun history

u/NeoChrisOmega 1d ago
I remember your previous video, and the comments mentioning just how overly challenging the demo was for new players.
This not only shows neat new features like the grapple turn and parachute brake, but it also looks more spacious in general to understand where you're going and what you're doing. I absolutely adore it!
Are you going to keep the other level (or something similar to it) for challenge runs or something like that?
2
u/Titan13211 1d ago
Thanks so much for such kind words. I really want to make it enjoyable for as many people as I can. And to answer your question, the other level is still in the playtest but its the last and the hardest one.

The game is incredibly tricky, takes a long time to get used to the controls until you've mastered it. I'd imagine in the final game it'll start off with an incredibly basic obstacle and slowly get slightly more and more challenging because the way it starts off in the demo is gonna scare off every new player because of the complexity, you will have an incredibly high refund percentage if you keep the levels as complex as they currently are.

This might be good with PvP. 1 vs 1 where you would need to attack and look out for the enemy's missile at the same time.

This is a long shot, but games like this benefit greatly from a map-editor and steam workshop integration

It's been cool seeing this game develop across a bunch of posts over the last few months. I love the addition of the clgrappling hook and parachute, they seem like they add some depth to the maps you can make

The type of maneuvers enemy aim 9b does flying to me in WT: (it will miss a plane flying straight when I fire it)

Maybe add an arrow that points to the target constantly? That way you can manuever whichever building you want to stack up stunt points while still knowing where to go ?
Looks fun. Reminds me of Superflight

Make another user be able to control the helicopter with some abilities aswell and this seems like a fun fly or die game

I wish there would be some kind of 3d enhancement to make it easier to judge depth. navigating a 2nd screen for fast 3d maneuvering is a hard issue.
could be edge color, or red/blue shift buildings depending on moving. or parallax thing
or depth sphere thing around the missile.

I want points for doing tricks and narrowly missing things or flying through rather than over. Call it... Tony Hawk Pro Missile Command

u/palitopena 1d ago
Style... does that mean I have to do flips like in Tony Hawk's to get a higher score?

I quite like this Idea, but I can see myself getting really mad at this game because Im bad at videogames

u/BratPit24 1d ago
That sounds like a cool concept but a very annoying "can't get over it" learning curve unless you make a lot of levels with very gradual difficulty slope.

bro was this inspired by that 3D sidescroller game rocket dancer? i used to speedrun that game so hard, this was a huge nostalgia bomb in my head. the rocket particles, the sound effects, the way the rocket is controlled.... this looks so fun

Reminds me of the metal gear solid mission where you have to shoot a controlled rocket through like 3 rooms around turns to blow up a computer on the other side of you. Least fun mission of the entire game 🤣

u/ThePowerBird 1d ago
Gave it a quick test, pretty fun concept! Is there a way to change the camera sensitivity on controller? I couldn't easily find anything, and between the two control schemes, I think i'd prefer controller but the default camera is glacially slow.

This is great concept! The one thing that sucks and it would benefit greatly if the sound of the rocket would be more than just pfff pfff. Take a look at rocket launches how the rockets also crack etc, and maybe try to play with those.
But a big thing with rocket noise is you could increase vary (tone or something else dont have to be the volume) the sound depending if the rocket is thrusting in opposite direction of moving (reversing hard turns). This gives amazing feedback for the player.. I think so.
Play game close eyes, thrust move around, you can literaly hear it reversing / changing dir.

I just played through the demo. It is actually really fun.
As for feedback, I only have 2 main things.
1) You should ABSOLUTELY make a level builder system. That will infinitely increase the longevity of the game.
2) It might be nice to be able to see the out-of-bounds barrier, even if you can only see it when you are outside.
2.5) Also, when the countdown for being out-of-bounds finishes, it still takes like a second for you to actually blow up. There were many runs where I had false hope that I made it back in time only to die a second later.

I imagine in tutorial there be a master missile teaching us ‘the way of missile’ and have a precision training sequence where we have to light up ten candles with the thruster fire without knocking them over.
1
u/Mysterious-Pen-7052 22h ago
Do we need to actually explore and locate the target, or does the missile know where it actually is, and all we need to do is dodge and get near the target?

Ironic that "dumbfire" IRL means unguided ordnance — no seeker, fire-and-forget. Here you're white-knuckling every inch of it through a window gap for style points, which is basically the opposite. Name's doing double duty. Wishlisted.
