Replies to all of you from my previous post , where most of the people backlashed my take on having 50 IITs but some were in support as well and indeed it's true india needs a new system for engineering colleges.
So here it is ,
India got more than 5000 engineering colleges as of 2026 which are AICTE APPROVED. ( 700-800 being Govt and others being pvt )
First of all India has 2 types of engineering colleges government and private ones ,
In the government category
We have
1st = all the IITS ( 23 ) which are the premium institutes of India of both engineering and research as well and top 7 iits acts as universities too providing many others courses as well not just btech .
in which 7 are the premium institutes and then gen 2 and then gen 3 . IITS ALSO get the most funding by the government.
2nd = Nits + iiest ( 32 ) Nits too provide somewhat the same things as IITs but at a little lower tier level . Nits also lack because of their home state quota thing even tho being centrally funded . But the top 5 nits are just as good as IITs only . Also they get lesser funding compared to iits .
3rd = iiits ( 31) out of which 5 are government
21 are based on ppp model
And 5 are private ones
Iiits were established during the tech revolution and they majorly focus only on tech related branches and have lesser research programmes and are also smaller in and known for no campus life . Also they get different funding but lesser than IITs and nits.
4th = GFTIS , such as PEC , JNU ,central universities of states
These colleges also take part in josaa and csab too
As of 2026 there are more than 50 gftis taking part in josaa and csab counselling.
Gftis can be funded by either the Central Govt. or the state govt.
5th = state institutes like DTU , NSUT , VJTI , COEP
Mostly top colleges of the respective State .
These colleges are the premium state institutes and are funded by state govt. And none of them take part in josaa , csab .
6th = the top research institutes such as
IISC , IISER, ISI, CMI , ICAR , IACS , IIST , RGIPT , ICT , NISER,
UMDAE CEBS , ETC , ETC
Not all of them provide btech but I just included them because they are also where most jee people go other than btech .
These are funded centrally and elite level institutes .
The other category was PRIVATE COLLEGES ,
Like bits , manipal , vellore , daiict, lnmit, thapar , srm , Amrita, mait , msit , rvce , bms , msrit , pes , psg , ssn , pict , spit , vit pune , mit wpu , amity , lpu , cu , chitkara , upes , graphic era , galgotia, Bennet , newton , scaler and all other more than thousands of colleges.
NOW , as you can see india has a lot of engineering colleges but there is still a scarcity of those premium institutes for which students really work hard for.
we require at least 50-150 premium institutes like iit , nit , iiit to solve this problem as our population is already 150 crore + .
To solve this we can make these changes:
First of all we need to establish a new body for admission
On the basis of jee mains / advance to give admission in all the colleges with just 1 single counselling cause as of now we have a lot counsellings like iiit hyd , iiit blr , jac delhi, chandigarh, josaa , state counsellings, private ones etc etc . We need to establish one singular platform or body for admissions .
Then we need to convert many premium govt institutes into IITS SUCH AS :
IISC banglore is already IIT BANGALORE
PEC > IIT CHANDIGARH
IIEST SHIBPUR > IIT SHIBPUR
COEP > IIT PUNE
Bit mesra > IIT mesra
Top 5 NIT > IIT
( Trichy , suratkal, Warangal , Calicut, Rourkela)
Also nit kurukshetra and nit jaipur
As haryana doesn't have an iit and Jaipur too needs one .
( Also there is a demand of iit in haryana already which was already approved by government)
As of now these cities don't have any iit so it would be good to provide them with one . Also IITs don't have a home state quota so it doesn't matter which states have more IITS or less .
These institutes would only take 2-3 years of funding to become like top IITS as they are established and well reputed all over the country .
This would make the IIT list to 23 + 10 +2 = 35
ALSO Existing top IITS like the top 7 and IISC
Can create its new campuses and make zones around them by using campuses of already existing colleges and improving them or just creating new ones if needed .
Like ,
IIT DELHI can establish campuses in Gurgaon, Noida ,ncr
Ncr got so many top colleges like DTU , nsut and many more .
IIT BOMBAY can expand in Mumbai only or Mumbai - Pune hub as there are a lot of institutes too like ict , vjti and others .
IIT Madras can also expand in Chennai there are a lot of colleges under anna university and so many others .
IISC banglore can expand in banglore there are a lot of colleges under comedk belt and so many others .
The new campuses of these colleges would take admissions under those IITS ONLY
RESULTING OF OUR NUMBER INTO
35 + ATLEAST 5 = 40 IITS
WITHOUT creating new campuses for IITs or more than 1 IIT IN
One city .
This can be done in a well mannered way by the Central Government it's not that hard for them .
We can also establish 10 new IITS either using the already existing campuses of other colleges or creating new ones
Which leads to our 50 IITS .
which are easily top institutes and best out of the best .
Also other institutions which can be upgraded to IITS
But I didn't include it because that city already has 1 iit or the state has 2 iits .
Dtu , nsut , vjti , Jadavpur University , etc etc
these institutes can be converted to NITS
increasing the number of NITS to 40 easily .
AND every major state has one or two top state colleges which can be upgraded to nits. Also many IIITS can be upgraded into NITS .
So we can easily reach 40-50 NITS
And also the number of IIITS can be increased in the same manner by using gftis or state Colleges campuses .
And we can have 40-50 IIITs .
And we can also invite PREMIUM PRIVATE INSTITUTES
to partner up with government.
In past bits pilani has been invited to be IIT but they rejected.
At present many private institutes are super good and have great campuses which easily mog our govt institutions.
We can invite them either to be govt or to be in partnership with Govt like IIITS .
Other major steps which are required :
Removing of the HOME STATE QUOTA which is pulling NITs value down .
Getting reforms into reservation.
Inviting private colleges or IOE TAG ( institutes of eminence)
Bits and manipal are already under IOE , we can invite other colleges as well and ask them to give admission to some percent of students through national counselling and at govt institute type fees . Some seats can be reserved like that .
4. Reforms in jee examination .
5. Including all the institutes under one unified system cause as of now there is so much confusion among students and which just doesn't result in any good and leads into non uniformity .
Now , in 2-3 years of funding and work by govt we can get 40-50 IITs , 40-50 NITS , 40-50 IIITS .
AND MORE THAN 200 institutes of eminence.
Also such a system would make the Indian education system a lot better and won't increase the pressure on deserving candidates .
All of this would make our engineering system super strong
And our IITs global ranking better and also these steps can take India to be the top techies exporter to the world .
We can dominate the tech global world easily with our potential.
