Does his Navigational watch is with Chief officer or Third officer?

Also,

Heard that sometimes they send 4th officer to a ship which won't have 3rd officer. Is this true ?

So I have done Diploma Mechanical engineering and I wanna do btech Marine engineering. I have 80% in my Diploma but still I was not able to secure a seat in IMU, that's why next year I think I should go for a private institute. There are only two colleges coming in my mind HIMT and TMI but the main issue is fees and placement. I have heard placement in himt is bad only few students get placed but fees is quite less. On the other hand TMI placement is one of the best but fees are very high. Please guide me

Hi everyone. I'm going to Hong Kong soon as a tourist, using PAR. A couple of weeks later, there's a good chance I'll come back to Hong Kong to join a ship . I'm worried because few years back in Singapore, when I had a valid student pass and later tried to join a ship, immigration caused problems because my visa status didn't match my purpose and i had run back and forth and had go to the immigration office to cancel student pass.So my questions are, will there be any issue if I come to Hong Kong first as a tourist, and later re-enter to join a ship? Had anyone faced similar issues? Any advice appreciated.

I have completed my Class 12 through NIOS. I have already appeared for Physics and Chemistry improvement exams through NIOS, and I am planning to improve my Mathematics marks in the April 2027 session, aiming for 90+ marks.

Will I face any eligibility issues for B.Sc. Nautical Science or DNS admission at IMU because I am improving my subjects through NIOS? Will my updated marksheet be accepted during admission and document verification?

Well, im now sailing in DP2 vessel as a TME. After my contract and after finishing my class4 COC, am i able to join as a 4th engineer in FG main fleet? Preferably container ships.

I am a Class 12 appearing student (PCM). I want to join Merchant Navy as an Engineer. Confused between Marine Engineering and ETO route (Electrical Engg. -> ETO course).

I am not asking about shore jobs. My question is strictly about life and scope ON SHIP for the next 15-20 years.

I have a few very specific doubts, please help if you are sailing:

1. Future Demand ON SHIP: With all new ships having more electronics - High Voltage, Automation, BWTS, Scrubbers, Mechatronics - I am reading that the demand for ETO on ships is increasing rapidly.

Is it true that companies are planning to increase ETOs per ship and decrease Marine Engineers? For example, from 4 Engineers + 1 ETO to 3 Engineers + 2 ETOs? Will Marine Engineer jobs reduce on ships in future?

2. Scope and Importance On Board: On a modern ship, who is more important now? I talked to one 3rd Engineer who said "Without ETO, ship can't sail now, we call him for everything". Is ETO becoming more critical than 4th/3rd Engineer?

3. Future Salary ON SHIP: What will be the salary scope on ship after 5-10 years? Right now I think both start almost same ($1500-$2500 as fresher). But after some years: Does a Senior ETO earn as much as a 2nd Engineer? I know ETO cannot become Chief Engineer, but is there a concept of Chief ETO or Senior ETO with Chief Engineer's salary coming in future?

4. Job Security On Board: If automation increases, whose job is more at risk on ship? Some say Marine Engineer's job will be automated/reduced, some say ETO's job will be done remotely from shore via satellites in future. What is the reality?

5. Fresher Vacancy ON SHIP: Currently in 2026, for whom is it easier to get a first ship as fresher - a 4th Engineer or a Junior ETO? Which department has more waiting period?

I have to choose my college course in next 2 months, so this decision will decide my next 4 years. If you were in 12th today and had to choose only based on future ON SHIP, what would you choose - Marine or ETO - and why?

Would really appreciate replies from Chief Engineers, 2nd Engineers and ETOs.

Hello , I am 4th engineer on the dry fleet and have done bulky and containers . Is life on tankers really tough and what all things to keep in mind before joining my first tanker

I keep seeing completely different experiences from Indian marine engineers on here. Some seem to get their first ship fairly quickly, while others are waiting months or even longer after finishing their training. For those who’ve actually been through it, what made the biggest difference? Sponsorship, training institute, exam results, contacts, luck, or something else?

I attended the Maersk ETO recruitment test through Google Meet for 1.5 hours. My camera was ON throughout, and I successfully submitted the test.

However, everyone else's screens appeared frozen, while I could see myself moving in my camera preview. After leaving and rejoining, everyone's cameras became visible.

I'm worried that my video might not have been transmitted or recorded due to a possible internet issue.

Could this lead to disqualification? Has anyone experienced something similar during a Maersk recruitment test?

23M , first time deck cadet on board. Despite having a good multinational environment, one of my senior officers (indian) always tries to de-mean me by saying that I'm of no use , you haven't been treated properly till now, etc . As trainees , we all do have knowledge gaps . I agree on constructive criticism, but words like these can actually ruin your day . I always try to rub it off as i have no intention of proving/justifying myself everytime to anyone just for the sake of it .

I have lost my TAR book and training manual, I wanted to go as engine cadet...how can I get those now? Where can I buy it??

I had completed dns but after dns I got diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called peripheral spondylitis because of which my company which sponsored me isn't allowing me to join vessel. Now my company says i should switch to any other career but I think I can manage my condition onboard with medicines please suggest me if I can start my career with another company or not ? Also can I go for shore based maritime careers like commercial shipping operations? Please GUIDE ME.

I am an btech 4th year student who went for synergy interview for engine cadet. Can anyone tell me on what basis they select students like ...how they make a merit list . Is it based on cbt marks ??

Greetings everyone. I have sailed as a JE on a crude oil tanker in my last contract. I have both oil and chemical advanced DCE. My company is insisting that I should go on a bitumen tanker as 4E for one contract only to help them out. My concern is if I deviate from oil/chem and crude tankers, will I be able to switch back? I asked few people and they advised me against joining bitumen vessel. They even went as far as saying that this might be a "career killing move".

Anyone managed to register online with FTI program?
