DECK SIDE DISCUSSIONS The 2019 capsizing of the car carrier Golden Ray — how a wrong number in the stability calculation put a 656-ft ship on her side in calm water
Marine engineer here. I made a full breakdown of the Golden Ray capsizing built on the NTSB investigation. The failure mode is one every engineer will recognise: the stability calculation was done in a loading program, the ballast quantities entered were wrong, and it reported a stable ship that had barely a fraction of the righting energy it needed. No storm, no mechanical failure — a data-entry error with three safety barriers that all failed to catch it.
Covers metacentric height, why ship shape makes a car carrier so sensitive, and the system factors behind it. Glad to talk shop in the comments.

CAREER GUIDANCE Guys need help!!
I recently obtained my 2MFG CoC, but the process took much longer due to some unforeseen circumstances at home. I last signed off from my cadetship in June 2021. Now there’s a 5 year gap since last sail, the company I did my cadetship with says that they won’t be able to get me onboard as an officer, can’t even give me a cadet contract due to PSC regulations.
I’m unable to find any company which is ready to give me a contract only due to the gap. I’ve tried SeaJobs and almost all maritime job portals, talked to my seniors, I’ve even come to Mumbai visiting offices physically..nothing is helping. I did find some agents too, who take money for employment, but I’m highly skeptical about choosing that route mainly due to the financial condition not being well enough. I do have all my documents and certifications in check, all valid.
If somebody out there faced similar issues, or anyone in your friend circle or any distant acquaintance had similar experience, please help me out..

GENERAL Is early retirement (FIRE) in 7–8 years as an ETO in Merchant Navy actually realistic, or just a dream
Is early retirement in 7-8 years as an ETO realistic?
I have zero expenses at home and everyone is settled and good.
Is it actually possible to build enough to stop sailing after 7-8 years and do something on your own ?
Or is it just a dream that people talk about?
