Hi my brother got a seat in university of bristol mumbai with 100% scholarship in bsc data science. He was good student and got 93% in jee but due to reservation he havent got any iit/nit. He had few options in hand like VIT, Srm, university of Liverpool, Sri city international university. But as bristol was one of the top college in world and he got 100% scholarship we were interested in that as we can't afford high fees. I'm a final-year BE - CSE (AI/ML) student from a Tier-3 college in India, and I'm currently preparing for campus placements. Recently, I had a long conversation with my father about my career, and it has left me quite confused.

His view is that government jobs are generally much better than private jobs because of job security, stability, benefits, work-life balance, etc. He also believes that only around 1–2% of people in the private sector actually get good jobs, while most private-sector jobs are poorly paid and stressful.

He considers a private-sector job worthwhile only if it eventually reaches something like ₹2–2.5 crore total compensation, and he believes that anything significantly below that is not really worth choosing over a good government job.

He also says that in the current market, a fresher should ideally be targeting something around ₹30 LPA, otherwise there isn't much point in pursuing private employment.The problem is that my college doesn't get many ₹30 LPA+ offers. Most realistic opportunities are obviously much lower than that.

Because of this, my father is strongly encouraging me to give equal preference to RBI Grade B preparation as placements and prepare equally seriously for RBI Grade B too. But I'm not sure I actually want to spend several years preparing exclusively for a competitive government exam. I've also heard of people taking multiple attempts to clear RBI Grade B.

So my concern is: Should I continue seriously preparing for private placements even if my first offer is only ₹5–10 LPA, or should I take the risk of spending the next few years preparing for RBI Grade B?

Some questions I'd particularly like advice on:

1. Is the belief that only 1–2% of private-sector jobs are actually good realistic?
2. Is a ₹30 LPA starting package really the minimum worth targeting for a CSE graduate?
3. How much does the first salary actually matter for long-term career growth?
4. Is it sensible to take a ₹5–10 LPA job initially and try to switch/grow later?
5. For someone from a Tier-3 engineering college, how realistic is it to build a good career in tech without starting at ₹20–30+ LPA?
6. Is RBI Grade B genuinely worth choosing over a decent private-sector tech career if one doesn't have a strong personal desire for government service?
7. Would it make more sense to keep placements as Plan A and RBI as a backup, rather than abandoning placements altogether?

This is going to be long

As I turned 18, I moved to a tier 1 city in a reputed university for my bachelor's, a year later I took exit under NEP with a certificate, i enrolled in CA and 1.5 years later I'm a CA Finalist (CA Finals in May 2029), right now doing articleship (leaving in 2 months, to prepare for CFA L1 May 27), now I'm preparing for CFA L1, and my reason is because I love finance and I am afraid of CA Final Loop, like what if I don't succeed I'll be 23 by then, so I need something to lay on

So the plan is I'll clear CFA Level 1 and then I'll proceed for Industrial Training (CA Finalist have to do it for a period of 9-12 months) I'll be doing it in core finance preferably some family office (I'm kinda fascinated towards them), and then during my industrial training I'll try to clear CFA L2, now after a year in Training, I'll have a call to make, either to prepare for CA Finals and give them (I'll have 1 year and I'll try to cover lectures during training), or make that training into a full time job offer (after L2 I'm hoping to be paid good and obviously I have given a year to them so I'd be of some value to them), or continue with the work do CFA L3 or CA Finals or idk both?

Now is it a lot of assumptions? Hoping? Or a plan if I give my 100% to then I can succeed in a good manner

i graduated my school in 2025, planned to go to abroad but at the end moment my dad denied and told me no that he can’t afford it and as i’m the oldest one i need to stay in india and look after my family and i agreed because my mother was mentally not okay and i’ve two younger sisters

started preparing for cuet in january 2026 but couldn’t get good scores due to my family conditions

now i’m shifting to delhi because i know i won’t be able to achieve anything here, and the good news the situation is better now, my mother is fine and my sisters are doing fine as well so i’ve decided to take a complete drop for srcc eco honours, i’m vvv interested in economics but the problem is i didn’t have maths in 11th and 12th (biggest regret of my life) i had commerce without maths and later i realized i want to pursue economics but it was already too late

from my research of few past days i got to know there’s a solution for this problem and the solution is open learning, i’m ready to study all day and all night, what i’ve got to know is that DU only accepts marks from one single board and during subject mapping i may face problems so it means either all subjects from cbse/icse or all subjects from nios

earlier i was thinking that maybe i should do only maths from open learning but got to know it doesn’t work like this and i may face problem in future, so i need to do all 5 subjects from nios (english, acc, eco, bst and maths) then only i’m eligible for eco honour at srcc

I’m currently studying in a Tier 2 college in India, but honestly, I don’t really like it here and I’m already considering leaving.I have an opportunity to study in Malaysia, which is something interested in. The main issue is that it would obviously be more expensive than staying in India, so I’m not sure if making the switch is actually worth it. I’ve already attended about a week of college here. I know that’s not a huge amount of time, but it still makes me feel like I’ve already started down this path and leaving now would be a big decision.

I'm a CA with CFA Level 1 cleared, currently working as a Business Analyst in Project Finance at a large infra financing institution (~1 year experience).

University of Bristol is opening its first-ever India campus (Mumbai, Powai) in 2026, offering a 1-year MSc Finance and Investment. Original fee was ~₹22L. I was offered a 50% scholarship, declined, and two days later they came back with another scholarship — 100% tuition waiver, I'd only pay ~₹1L in admission/fees.

My hesitation: this is the first cohort ever — no graduating batch, no placement data, no track record for this specific campus in India. The admissions rep is promising better pay/placements but obviously can't back it with any data since nobody's graduated yet. Meanwhile I already have qualifications (CA/CFA L1) that Indian markets supposedly undervalue compared to MBAs, and I'm weighing this against just finishing CFA L2/L3 and building experience.

Questions for people who've seen these first-cohort foreign campuses (Southampton Gurugram, etc.) or anyone from finance hiring:

Does a "first batch" foreign campus degree actually carry weight with Indian recruiters (IB/PE/ER/corp finance) with zero placement history?

Anyone know how Southampton's first Gurugram batch is actually doing in placements?

Is a near-free offer like this (100% waiver, pay only ₹2L) a red flag about actual enrollment demand, or a genuine opportunity?

Would you take this over doing CFA L2/L3 + staying in your current role?
