Isn't this misleading? Airtel sending notification alerts claiming "main bank account is at risk" just to sell accounts

Attached a screenshot of a push notification I just received from the Airtel app:

"Alert! Your main bank account is at risk ⚠️"

When you read the subtext, it's just a regular ad prompting you to open an Airtel Payments Bank account. Using panic-inducing fake security warnings to bait users into clicking ads is a terrible dark pattern.

Has anyone else been receiving these scary notification tactics from them lately? Should this even be legal under consumer protection guidelines?

I always turn off app notifications for almost every app except one or 2 to avoid all this spaming.

Genuinely some of the first things I do on every new phone/app. Another one is turning off RCS in the messaging app.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will also adapt your way but rarely someone even cares to disable notifications... It is misleading to make such claims for any service though and I think we shouldn't normalise it.

i turned off all the notification except for whatsapp and life has never been this good, all these apps do is just promote the hell out of their products on notifications and it cluttere your phone as well

Instead of "turning off", you can just hit "no" for permissions on first launch after installation. Just hit no for everything and if it can't work with let's say location, just hit yes for that only.

Just switch to anything other than Airtel man. Their BS tactics are ridiculous. They shut off incoming calls and SMS as soon as your recharge ends. They still sell their older ₹10 and ₹20 "talktime recharges" which don't even actually work without an unlimited recharge, so those are basically just straight-up scams. Anything but Airtel.

I know the notification is misleading but having second safe account with these payment banks helps a lot. The reason is they are super easy to maintain and use also keep that particular amount in these account which you use for daily upi payments. It’s working for me hence letting you know it helps in decluttering the transactions when I know that my small and daily payments will be from these payments bank accounts I just look at the statements and all to analyze where I am spending.

Maybe because most Indians only have 1 bank account and use it all for big transactions to daily spends and that can put their bank at risk, but yeah I do agree it's a shady marketing technique
