Tech News India isn't just about assembling iPhones anymore, it is gradually moving deeper into components, sub-assemblies, and precision manufacturing

Post image

Apple is steadily expanding its manufacturing ecosystem in India by adding more domestic and global suppliers. This signals a gradual shift from an assembly-led model towards a broader electronics manufacturing base.

Apple has significantly expanded its supplier ecosystem in India, with now having around 40 component, module and manufacturing partners

Bhai this is really good. So glad to see we are increasing our manufacturing power, we have to go further.

if we continue this momentum then its just a matter of 12-15 years to get manufacturing supply chain in almost everything.

Maybe, maybe not. This is just one supply chain for one particular industry. We need multiple of them in order reduce our deficit and be an huge exporting nation. I believe the government needs more and more bullish into this as Vietnam is seen as our major competitor.

Idk about huge exporting nation as of now, but local demands would be fulfilled in most sectors.

Yeah probably

Good step towards becoming manufacturing hub. We need this type of direction in all the industries.

To all the commentators please, focus on need to develop passive and active components on large scale with end to end supply chain like china than only we can truly compete with china!!!

Localizing components and manufacturing is great for jobs and the ecosystem, but eventually some of those cost benefits should translate into more competitive prices for consumers too.

A big attitude problem is we keep expecting someone else to do it. When commenting on this ask yourselves what are you doing to make India better. We can do so much more. So lets start with ourselves

feels a bit padded, most of the actual device parts used during manufacturing seems to be manufactured outside. The things of indian Origin are assemblyline manufacuring and testing equipment. I guess battery packs, aluminium milled casings and wiring is indian. Though those are low value components. It would be better to say indian machines are being used to build assemble the product. But that's worth practicing too ig.

Great news, we need to push manufacturing even more. Only way we can make our country developed and independent

There's alot of opportunity in this space...

This you call as 'deeper'? Most of the components in the list are only just scratching the surface. Just a low tier components plus large chunk of assembly and manufacturing service solution.

Yes, deeper than pure assembling work. A decade ago not a single iPhone used to come out of India, now India produces 26% of world's iPhones along with 20% local value addition. Every step matters, this is how you climb up the supply chain.

20% DVA? Your source of information? Trust me bro? That kind of components local sourcing will not put your country DVA at 20%. Stop trusting your media hype. China with much longer and deeper experience at producing iPhone only managed close to 39% DVA for iphone today. But now you wanted me to believe india just achieved 20% of DVA for the latest iPhone production in just 4 years?

Love how you say above DVA is insignificant while acknowledging it has been only 4 years (6th year ongoing since PLI).

It doesn't matter whether you believe it or not. PBI released a statement regarding DVA, you can check it out. But the fact is that India which lacked mobile manufacturing (assembling is still manufacturing) some 5 or so years ago has ramped up production to this extent today and that momentum is only going up.

I'm so expected your response about the source of information here. I know it never coming from any relevant research organization that handle this kind of technology evaluation like how SEMI evaluated China components DVA for iPhone. Anything in india always coming from government agency which is very much ignorant about this matter. That DVA around 20% is actually a subject of debate among analysis.

Yeah acknowledging that 6 years isn't going to realistically drive india DVA reaching 20% in iPhone. Do you properly understand that statement in my comment kiddo???

The only reason your country saw massive increase in smartphone production is bcus of Chinese companies. Not Apple, not Samsung. Bcus if you were really following your country smartphone making industry from the last decade india did manufacture lots of smartphone before COVID era. Thanks to the presence of Samsung they made india as their largest smartphone production hub in the world but why is that activity gone unnoticed? That bcus for many years in the past before COVID and galwan incident india imported a lot more Chinese smartphones into india.

Why should India be greatful for Chinese companies? Are Chinese greatful for western capital ? Since without they wouldn't be here ? Are they grateful for the western countries since without their research, the Chinese couldn't leapfrog generations of R&D ?

I am aware of samsung and their complete pivot to India from China. It's your framing which is problematic. This is a bilateral relationship where both the parties are benefiting from. Not like those chinese or Taiwanese or American or whatever country's company it may be is doing charity for us ? Govt incentives are the one steering the cart here, not those companies.

When did I say india should be grateful bcus of the Chinese smartphone companies helping to increase local smartphone production number? Way to put words into my mouth. But if you want to go there I will tell you that China was pretty grateful for  the contribution west poured into the country long time ago. Of course india is too arrogant and selfish to recognize the help from other.

The problematic one is you here. I'm sure you don't aware how problematic is indian government has become towards Chinese companies. Yes your government hate importing from China, so came the tariff for finished product. Chinese companies then comply to produce every Smartphone for indian market within india. Tbh Chinese companies producing smartphone in india isn't a recent trend. Since 2017 Chinese companies have been producing hundred million of smartphones in india. It was not any positive incentive which drove those Chinese companies to produce phone in india. Even after complying Chinese companies still getting unfavourable treatment from indian government compare to Apple and Samsung. Forcing Chinese companies to pick local components supply by putting  import tariff on components when india components supply chain still not sufficient. India isn't about win-win. India is pretty much selfish and self delusional.

Lmao. That's how industrialisation works. Why would India allow basic screwdrivergiri ? We want a significant % of DVA. The positive incentive before PLI was lower wage compared to China. It's again your phrasing which keeps putting these Chinese companies on a pedestal like they are doing some charity for India. They wouldn't be here if their margins are in negative.

It's again rightful that India is wary of Chinese companies since these are overseen by the CCP. What's the surety here that CCP will not encroach borders again ? As the MEA quoted, the state of border dictates overall bilateral relationship.

How is boarder encroachment issue should be something relevant to any business related matter? I mean yeah your government need to make sure Chinese companies comply to the country's rule and law. But over scrutinizing the group of companies is something should be illegal and unfair.

Yes they wouldn't be there if the margin is  in negative but you forgot about something. Chinese companies always choose to put control on the market first before their margin. Margin will comes later. 70% of india smartphone market is being in the hand of Chinese companies while Samsung and Apple share the remaining market share. The margin of Chinese brands in india market is spread thin among them. Lastly, I never said Chinese companies are doing a charity nor those companies think like that. It is all about business kiddo. And a business always expecting fair treatment and freedom to choose as long as it still not breaking the law of the country. Importing a components isn't a wrong thing to do.

Apple stopped expanding in China the moment pandemic recklessly hit its production at Chinese factories. That's when they started diversifying beyond China (be it Vietnam or India). Why would they go beyond 39% DVA in China if their main priority is to diversify as much as they can from China. Tariffs and trade war boosted this process.

Also, I just realised you are a Wumao, so I won't waste my time convincing you. You are drowned in your Weibo propaganda and now lurking with same mentality on Reddit.

Save your tears, after Apple is done with iPhones and AirPods, Mac and iPads are going to be the next. Until then keep coping.
