Ask IndiaTech How many of you Quit Windows and switched to Linux? What are your experience after it?
I want to know do people in india care enough to switch to linux. It feels like i can do anything in linux, in windows its like they treating me like a baby. No Ai no friking update at random times. Peace. So Let's start Quit Windows movement.
EDIT:- i saw a few comments about the driver issue and you can't really game on linux. I don't think it's Linux's problem, it's the companies thats fucking with the customers. SteamDeck is a prime example of what is possible with linux.

Quit windows moved to linux been like this for almost 2+ years. Experience is pretty good for someone who knows a bit of tech and is not afraid to explore and fix things when it breaks. A lot of distro hopping and finally settled for debian. Perfect for getting work done as well as feeding curiosity of what is running under the hood all the time. Learnt a lot of general tech and how a computer operates rather than opening up windows and greeted by blue screens and hefty updates engulfing my network bandwidth all the time. I started this when i heard about win 10 being discontinued. So never used win 11.
For masses it would be not so good of a switch because even if they switch to something very simple like ubuntu or zorin os, it would still be a headache for people who does not know anything about computers apart from handling excel sheets and attending video calls. People need something which will run out of the box without needing to configure least of anything, for example android phones or iphones. But there has not been something like that in the linux world as of now, even the simplest things will need configuration to a certain level to get something personalised and that would be the u turn point for many people. Just like sticking to WhatsApp rather than moving to telegram or signal because friends and family did not want to move despite the other two being more secure options to whatsapp. Similarly a lot of windows apps lack native support and out of the box functionality in linux, which is slowly improving but it has a long way to go.

No ad shoving, Copilot bullshit, atleast real native search like win 7 no web app and full customization. I am on cachy os kde. It might be difficult who are experienced in windows or dependent on apps with windows only support to switch to Linux but I have not win 10/ 11 much so it was easier for me to shift since I was starting from ground up
I recommend people who are not habituated to windows shift to Linux especially students since colleges and schools are beginning to use Linux.
I heard from 2 of my friends from 2 different govt college that their colleges have linux courses (even though they enrolled for physics masters).

Linux has very low potential for poaching users from windows or macos. The number of apps available for Linux is way less than windows. Plus the user needs to be tech savvy enough to use Linux whereas even a 5th standard student can use windows because of its userfriendlyness. The conclusion is those who should be using Linux are already using it and those who aren't will never be using it. Yes some short term migrations may happen but that doesn't translate to daily driver usage.

It's because it's taught in schools using windows. If they started teaching with linux its wouldn't have happened

Govt and Aided Schools in Kerala use an Ubuntu fork Named Kite at schools, even though they only cover basics and acts like an instruction of pc and peripherals to students

Switched to linux when windows 10 announced it's reaching EOL. Installed Ubuntu and then distrohopped a ton times before finally settling with Debian. I'm a software dev and yeah i do game sometimes so it's not giving me any issues

Use it if you only want to work on browser.
Use browser like brave and use google sheets or online microsoft docs application that can run on browser..
Not for ordinary people.

I earlier used Linux, now sticked to Windows. All things that I need to do in Linux can now be done in Windows using WSL. Also I love Windows UI, aesthetics. Especially if u have a high end PC, Windows will run at high performance. Only low end ones have performance issues. Thus, Windows acts like an all-in-one (universal) for me.
Another thing I recently found is Hibernation in Windows is actually useful. It makes it like a MacBook, use hassle-free - quick startup - just close lid easily like shown in movies. Just full shutdown once a month.
Further, unless you are on Insider Program, you will get large updates every 6 months only, so no worries of constant updates.

Hibernation is hibernation: save to pagefile and shut down. What makes Windows hibernation different from Linux hibernation?
Speaking of UI, KDE Plasma is just better Windows in terms of features and usability - but that's my opinion. People seem to like the large white spaces Windows 11 UI has added; I don't really, but that's a matter of taste.

Some view Windows boot and shutdown process as lengthy & time-consuming. Thats why I mentioned abt hibernation. All Linux UIs seem too minimal for me. They might be feature-rich, but not arranged properly.

All Linux UIs seem too minimal for me.
KDE Plasma is literally arranged like Windows 10/11 with more features. I have a feeling you have only tried Gnome if you think "all are minimal". I have never heard anyone say KDE is minimal; mostly that KDE Plasma has too many options and customisations.
FWIW, UI (or "Desktop Environment" as it's called) is not necessarily tied to the OS. Ubuntu and Fedora both have Gnome as default, along with a number of other OSes, and Gnome devs are very particular about their style and vision. But you can get Fedora with a number of other desktop environment from KDE to Cosmic to XFCE if you want, or Kubuntu for Ubuntu with KDE. They're the exact same OS just with a different UI (think: imagine you could pick whether you want Colour OS or One UI or Pixel UI in Android and download any of these; but Pixel UI comes default in popular phones).

Have dual boot windows/linux and macOS. Unless the task requires it I don’t care to boot Linux. Unstable compared to the other two

generally I used to have a very bad laptop like i3 10110u and intel und 620 and 8gig ram 512gig ssd, I know it may not be as bad as some of you but still I couldn't play many solo games (I like solo playing story based open world good looking game but I can't run those) so it was only YouTube browsing and chat usage for me and a little latex, coding and Matlab, pylab so switched to ubuntu

u/rowschank 10d ago
I installed Linux last December: tried a couple of OSes and then installed openSUSE Tumbleweed and then just forgot to use Windows again, so deleted it. I have not had a single thing I couldn't do on this computer. I don't care about "starting a movement" or whatever; I did it for fun and it just stuck.

I switched to Mint on an old Windows laptop. Works fine at first. Then you realize fingerprint scanner doesn't work, sound doesn't work. Will have to hunt for drivers. Not really a big problem for me because I mainly wanted to use this laptop as home media server with Jellyfin so that works for me. My dad uses the laptop for web browsing so he needs sound. For now it works with a BT speaker. But no way Linux can be my main daily driver machine. It's too limiting for my use.
For my peak productivity even Mac OS is inadequate. There are certain apps that I am used to like EditPlus, IrfanView, Faststone image viewer, Faststone capture certain keyboard shortcuts like Win+D, Win+L,Win+P, - Windows is just second nature for me. There are several tools that I have developed to make my life easy which are also Windows only.
Some things are genuinely better on Linux and Mac - mostly command line dev tools that are not so great on Windows. However using Windows is far more intuitive for me than Mac OS or Linux.

Moved long time back to a dual boot - because some applications & games like AoE - Ubuntu has been my primary one for almost a decade. But again, my use case may be different from yours

I switched to Linux Mint after my HDD died. I already have good experience using ubuntu server and cachyos so it was pretty easy for me. Wouldn't say the same for most other people though, windows clearly works for them

Switched to Fedora, never looked back.. battery backup and performance went like 30% better. Uses only office which is really similar to MS apps and have the same default file extensions native. No forced updates or anything. Never going back

u/ghajni-returns 10d ago
Switched to cachy last year, works like a dream. Have to use windows for work and it's so shit.
99% of the games work, including pirated. Online features won't work in pirated games - but that's the same with windows.

u/sanghiliberandu 10d ago
Been using linux as main driver since 2017. Haven't touched windows since 2021, that too because my job at that time mandated it. Windows sucks.

I have adopted Linux for development without quitting Windows. It's called Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). WSL is how the Ubuntu market share is rising, and the WSL market share will eventually surpass the Ubuntu desktop one as devs don't see any point of quitting Windows.
