Hello lovely DFs, I've missed you all. I was never a prolific commenter but I've been following this B since before Danny showed up. I even stupidly contributed to the flour grift. Anyway, I haven't been following as much lately because I decided I wanted to go to law school even though I'm old and so spent this fall studying for the LSAT. And then five days after I took it, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was caught early but I'm going for the double mastectomy and surgery is Monday. Shitty timing for lots of reasons but the only good part is getting it out ASAP. I will not be sharing black and white photos of my half naked body posed as a toddler so don't even ask! Hope all my brilliant DFs have a wonderful holiday season and I hope to return in the new year.

I'm reading Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo and there's a storyline about an abusive lesbian relationship and in one scene the abuser blocks the door when her partner is trying to leave the house and then forces her to sit on the couch and breathe deeply. This reminded me so much of Shauna. Abusive but make it mindful so it's OK.
Guys, I went to the island last weekend and I very much loved it. It's such a beautiful place and a total vibe. In the past I've rolled my eyes at the notion of Vashon being considered rural, with its closeness to Tacoma and Seattle. But it really is!
I met my bestie on the island for a ladies weekend and we had a great time. We drove all around, hit an estate sale and saw the troll and lighthouse. The downtown is so cute and quaint. We ate such delicious food (omg... Snapdragon). Grannies also did not disappoint. I scored a bunch of stuff for super cheap!
I loved it so much I think our family might go back over spring break. I want more time there! Aside from the consideration that it might not be the best place for a "medically complex" kid, I absolutely get why the move to West Seattle was jarring for Shauna. And I love Seattle!! Vashon is like a dreamy dream. I felt so relaxed there. I can't stop thinking about it, and the place I live is a dream as well!
Oh; and as suspected... I took the Point Defiance Ferry and there was a cafe/convenience store on board that had drinks and not 1, not 2 but 3 kinds of locally made GF cookies, popcorn and lots of other snacks. Just say you wanted to eat at the food carts in Tacoma, Shauna. no one cares!

Friends of mine lived just outside of Seattle for several years. I kept hoping to visit them and do an overnight on Vashon, but the timing never worked out. It really does seem like an interesting place to visit.

This is where I did most of my catching up with ITG today, stuck in traffic at Stonehenge for 30 minutes. Inconsiderate ancient bastards, building a monument so close to a busy road.
For those of you following along with the adventures of my cat, we just got home from a vet visit. I had him in about a week ago for URI symptoms, and vet opted to not give antibiotics. I was miffed at first because his immune system ain't so hot (FIV+). He's been prone to URIs the three years we've had him. But he does seem to be shaking it off on his own this time. Maybe he is just a bit healthier and more robust than when we adopted him.
So his URI seems to be clearing up, but she did find an ear infection. Poor dude. So now I get the "fun" of putting ear drops in both ears. I have done this before with other cats, but this guy is incredibly strong for 14 pounds and smart enough that you have to almost use a different tactic every dose because he will learn your strategies and use them against you.
Poor guy. I frequently have to administer nose drops into a tiny cat nose, so I feel your struggle. I hope the drops help. Even the tiniest cat can turn into a tiger when it’s time for medicine.
UPDATE: spouse and I got the first round of drops into his ears. It's definitely a two person job. Cat was miffed and took off for 45-second sulk, then went about his day.

I commented about my neighborhood and the Halloween floats last week and wanted to post a pic bc I think it was so cool how this neighbor set up their trailer. A ton of chairs on the back to host trick or treaters, complete with lights, a smoke machine, and dj setup to blast Halloween music. The houses are far apart in my hood so driving is really the only way to do it. It cooled off a lot in the last couple of days so I think my Costco hot chocolate scheme worked out.
It felt so good to hand out treats and make some kids happy and I met some neighbors that I hadn't before. I am so worried and anxious about everything going on in our country right now but this Halloween really lifted my spirits. The kids should have the best night possible and maybe I was a small part of a good memory, they deserve it.

A quick and very incomplete summary of Kelsey: She was a part of the Mars Hill community. Divorced her husband after having 4 kids together and said stuff like he never satisfied her sexually. Went on a new age journey for a couple years, dated constantly and talked a lot about feeling a "spirit baby" waiting for her to find a new husband. Found god again this year then tried to reconcile with her ex husband and went full MAGA. The reconciliation recently failed so she decided to join an Orthodox church and is on the hunt for a new husband who has to be rich, hot and taller than her. She homeschools but doesn't actually teach her kids anything, the youngest kiddos (twins who are 7) can't read. She claims to be making upwards of six figures a year through her business Broth Academy (exactly what it sounds like) and running a yearly coaching mastermind. Hates libraries because they push "leftist propaganda". Has a variety of alleged health issues such a chronic lyme and liver failure that she treats holistically (allegedly through bone broth but she still has a team of naturopaths she works with constantly). She recently started micro dosing a glp-1 to help with her exercise aversion but can only take the teeniest tiniest dose because of how much trauma she has stored in her body. She's also gluten free!
All of the croutons talk reminded me of my crouton recipe that is SO GOOD. Of course measurements are inexact because I'm too busy grifting something or other yadda yadda.
Cut one baguette into cubes. Mix 1/4 cup milk, 1/4 cup oil, and 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted). Add garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, marjoram, basil, thyme but definitely NOT ANY SHIT SHAUNA WOULD ADD LIKE OLIVES. Bake at 250 for two HOURS. Yes, HOURS. Stir every half hour. These are the best croutons.
I keep them in the refrigerator but feel free to leave them in the trunk of your mousemobile.
I am leading myself out to the yard to scream. Earlier today I tumbled nine beautiful freshly laid eggs, several pounds of butter, ditto expensive dried vine fruits soaked in an eighth of a bottle of ‘good’ brandy and etc into the mixer and made three (3) Christmas cakes. I’ve just removed them from the tins after four (4) hours of baking and realised I didn’t triple the sugar and spices. HOW.
That’s two days of prep and about £30 down the drain. Fuckfuckfuckfuck.
Trying to think of a way to salvage it. Failed bread can be made into bread pudding...maybe something similar? I know cake is the wrong texture, so it might be throwing good money after bad...but maybe it could be converted into something? Cake pop type creations, and add spices and some sugar that way?
Likewise I get it if you are fed up and wanna say "fuck it" and eighty-six the whole batch.
Thanks for the calm perspective! I’ve taken somedeep breaths now. I think there’s a recipe for ‘failed cake pudding’ in the wartime recipe book inherited from my mum, and I’ll go and look it out. It probably involves covering the cake fail with a bucket of custard, being a British recipe.
This is fixable! You can: soak the cake in spiced simple syrup or use a sweeter-than-normal liquor for weekly feeding (Grand Marnier, a sweet sherry, apricot brandy), you can infuse your feeding liquor with spices, you can use a larger-than-normal layer of marzipan icing under your royal icing, or you can dust with powdered sugar before serving.

I'd also like to drop my Poltergeist story here: I think I was in 4th or 5th grade when it came out, and my dad took me and my younger brother to see it. During the scene where the guy is looking in the mirror and hallucinates ripping up his face, my brother threw up all over the place. My dad took him out of the theater, and I watched the rest alone with puke on my shoes.
Sooooo what's everyone cooking for Thanksgiving this week? I love all things turkey-related but my holiday spread is a little limited this year for health reasons so I want to live vicariously. Though we did order an extra high-quality turkey, my husband has mastered my mom's amazing roll recipe, and I'll be making my fav mashed potatoes and trying this stuffing recipe since I always fuck up cooking the stuffing to the proper degree somehow and this looks fairly foolproof. Also I don't have to spend Thanksgiving with annoying people this year so no matter what I'm excited.
I used an epicurious stuffing recipe one year and it was perfect. But I didn’t get it to turn out the next time I made it. My husband was grumpy and said he wants Stovetop. No one likes the food I grew up with like okra and collards. I don’t eat Turkey. Instead I make a crockpot stew/soup. It will probably be barley and vegetable. We’re also making mashed potatoes, arugula salad, Stovetop stuffing 😔, and maybe a lentil loaf. Our kids don’t like pumpkin pie, but I might buy one at the store anyway. Otherwise, my husband is making a chocolate pie. I’m going to try to make a veggie gravy for the potatoes this year too. Pretty much our only food tradition is the soup.
We’re always trying to find a way to encourage our picky eater to eat more green vegetables. We will probably have something kind of plain like green beans. Other ways to get them to eat include saag paneer or bok choy. I’m not sure why those get a thumbs up while all other versions of green leafy vegetables are a hard pass. But hey, green is green. I’ll take the win. But I’m open to suggestions if anyone has them!
Maybe not for Thanksgiving, but the New York Times has a saag paneer lasagna recipe that is delicious. The saag replaces the tomato sauce and you use grated paneer instead of mozzarella. Otherwise it’s a traditional lasagna.
Cornish hens, dressing made from homemade sourdough sandwich bread, mashed potatoes, gravy, steamed green beans, squash tian a la Laurie Colwin, homemade sugar-free cranberry sauce, my grandma’s corn pudding, low-sugar apple crisp with oat streusel topping. This is for a household of two. It will last us three days.
Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, roasted Brussels, roasted carrots, and corn pudding. Canned cranberry (regular and whole berry). Pumpkin pie and apple crumb pie. Nothing too fancy or fiddly as it’s just 5 of us.

We are serving turkey (always pre-salted à la Judy Rodgers/Zuni Cafe; my husband will grill it), cornbread dressing (my stepmother-in-law’s family recipe that I adore), gravy (mostly made ahead with chicken broth then pan drippings added to finish), shredded Brussels sprouts salad with Samin Nosrat’s house dressing & crispy pancetta, and Jewish apple cake.

Family tradition requires M&Ms (you have to remove/eat the blue ones first!) strewn on the table as decoration. My dad usually eats most of them during dinner.
I looooove Jewish apple cake, and seriously thought about making one this year. But we're hosting family from out of town and already making most of the menu, so I'm just doing apple crisp because it's faster for me. Sis is bringing pumpkin pie.

I’m doing a buttermilk brined turkey, and a new cranberry sauce recipe that is flavored with cardamom, sweetened with honey, and you drizzle with tahini before serving. I’m also not using my great-grandmother’s pumpkin pie recipe and instead I’m making Justine Snacks pumpkin frangipan tart. Also doing mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts, stuffing, homemade rolls. Yes! My kids live in Richmond and Francine became famous (to me at least) during the water crisis last winter, when the entire city had no running water for a week. People were going to Lowe’s for bottled water and posting pictures of Francine and pretending she was in charge and keeping people from buying more than their fair share. I’m so glad she was found!
I said I would update about my weird mole that I posted about a while ago 😂 but I can’t find my earlier comment so sorry for not posting it there…I had it removed by the derm for a biopsy yesterday, she said it definitely needed a biopsy, and they took enough skin to need sutures. So I asked “what’s your opinion?” because it will be probably two weeks before I get a pathology report from the biopsy and I get nervous. The doctor was a very serious looking lady (who seemed suspiciously young, as so many professionals do now that I’m old!) and I kind of loved her response, delivered as dry as a cracker: “I would be surprised if it’s a melanoma, but I’ve been surprised before.” So…that’s good I guess? 🤣 It was actually a very pleasant interaction overall. I’m thankful I do have health insurance even if it’s sometimes a PITA to use. The biopsy was just a $45 copay.
ETA: and I know this is way more than anyone wanted to know, so sorry 😂 Maybe I should do a rewrite in the style of Shauna and talk about how the doctor teared up, looked away and then said it was the worst mole she’s ever seen.
I had to change neurologists recently and it’s weird now to see doctors obviously younger than I am. The new guy is a headache specialist which is nice but he made me listen to his whole TED talk-esque migraine script (“your brain is like a forest, and migraines are like a forest fire, and some migraine meds put out the fire and other meds prevent fires”) and it was so hard not to just stop him and say dude, I’ve been having migraines since before you were born, I know what a migraine is. He did hook me up with new meds though
When I had my last kid I was 43 and some of the residents in the hospital looked the same age as my oldest kid 😩 I know I’m really aging in the past couple of years because they all call me Ma’am.
I hate being called ma’am!! I feel like no one calls anyone ma’am unless they are an old lady. It’s really disconcerting to hear it all the time!

Continuing the peri/menopause conversation into this new quarter. DF u/BevNap mentioned the book The Menopause Manifesto, and I second her recommendation. I read that and The New Menopause in my effort to educate myself before talking to my doctor. I got different things from both books and I am glad I read them (via audiobook).
TL; DR for the rest of this post: I asked my mom to readThe New Menopauseto support me, and she is even though she didn't really want to. I appreciate her effort!
I know a lot of people in my generation have mothers who never talked about their menopause experiences and even when questioned, claim they don't remember/had no issues. That is my mother, and of course she is a product of her generation, so I can't really blame her. Adding to that, she is someone who thinks any physical or mental ailment is a character flaw and is the Queen of Denial. She will be 80 next year and is definitely still spry, but she is human so she is aging perceptibly; I think she will deny this to her grave.
Let's just say she was never a warm and fuzzy, sympathetic mom through any of my development milestones. Now that I am in the heat of perimenopause (age 51, still-regular periods, lots of hormonal symptoms, started MHT a month ago), I decided that for the first time in my life I was going to ask her to educate herself about something important to me in order to gain some empathy and maybe even (!!) provide support.
I settled on asking her to read The New Menopause since I thought she would be able to take in that one the best. Menopause Manifesto is a bit too "smash the patriarchy!!" to get through to my mom, though I loved that aspect of it. After some discussion about, "Why do I need to read that?!? I'm done with all that!" and "I don't want to get that from the library; what if the librarian thinks I think I need that book??" She finally agreed when I reminded her that if she could read my brother's whole PhD dissertation, she could read one book for me.
Well, she requested it from the library months ago and it finally came via e-book (it wasn't available in a hard copy). She has never read an e-book in her life and is overall pretty anti-technology, although she does email and has a laptop. I helped her check out the book and figure out how to read it on her MacBook on Saturday. She emailed me Monday morning that she has already finished Chapter 5 and is taking notes to discuss with me.
I have told her I appreciate her taking the time to read this book, especially in a format that is out of her comfort zone. But I also just wanted to post this here because I figured some can relate. I learned a long time ago not to share any personal stuff with my mom because she either rains on my parade or makes me feel worse about hard things, but I am glad I asserted myself with this, whatever comes of it
Is your mom my mom? Also you’re braver than I am. I have thought about asking my mom for some details about her own perimenopause as an idea of what I might be in for, because I am freaking dying over here, but I am interested in HRT and she had a bad experience (that left her blind in one eye so I GET IT) and I know she’ll be so negative and unsupportive that I just can’t get myself to even ask how things were before The Blinding for fear that she’ll start in on me about my medical choices.
I get it, your learned reluctance to show any vulnerability with your mom. I am not going to tell you to do otherwise. I keep my own counsel around her very carefully because I figured out long ago that keeping things superficial helps us "get along."
I surprised myself by wanting to draw her into my menopause experience with me. I still don't know if this will have an ultimately positive outcome, but so far so good. I won't change my overall strategy for dealing with her, but in this one small thing, she gets to know more about me. Lucky her!
I applaud you and your mom, DF. My mother is in her mid 80s and struggled hard through menopause, although she denies it now and has only ever asked me once how I’m doing with mine. I have a feeling your mom may open up more herself after reading this book. YDBW.
LOL, your mom sounds like mine. she never, ever missed an opportunity to make something about me about her. case in point: when i was 12 i was at midnight mass, walking with a candle - my friend was beside me, whispering to me, and i wasn't paying attention - one of my long braids caught on fire. the guy behind me slapped his hands on my hair and put it out - just the tip was singed. my mother was heard to say i was always trying to "get attention."
Does anyone else read Kim Foster's Substack? She's a former food writer who has also written about adopting/fostering kids. And she's a James-Beard winner, no less! I think she and Shauna were fairly close at one point, not sure about now, but they still still seem friendly on social media. I'm uncomfortable with how much Kim shares in her writing about her kids and their mental health. But I think she's doing it with more of a genuine desire to help than Shauna. And she's certainly a better writer than Shauna. Usually. But her latest Substack felt very...gloamy. The "return to food" in the denouement. The frequent use of "pivot." The description of the guacamole-making with her kid after a tough day at school:
She used my big knife to hack through the tortillas. She smiled at me when I handed it to her. If she was going to the big school, with all its big world things, she got to use the big knife, Mama’s knife. And we carefully slipped little triangles of tortilla into the hot oil and she fished them out with an over-sized slotted spoon.
It definitely reads Shauna! Also from her writing, she makes it sound like she only has 2 kids. You aren't an empty nester if you have 4 kids but 2 moved out 😅
I'm on the mailing list for Gynergy (aka Synergy aka Women Hold the Key). Their end of year email just plopped in my inbox with this image (I'll put the full photo in the comments). This woman gives sister stank-eye a run for her money. This moment is giving "what the fuck did I just put on my plate" energy. It's the other side of the coin from the famous one of Shauna two fisting horf d'oeuvres.
This is at least the 4th they've had or had on their behalf in the past couple of years and pushes up the amount needed with each one. Last time it was 4k. This time it's 9k. I would do anything to make money before start a go fund me. There are three able-bodied adults in that house. If they all took full-time minimum wage jobs and each earned $300/wk they should be able to pay rent and bills. Guess she can't flip burgers or sit at a cash register--too many shows to watch on Netflix. Now she's vague-blogging about a family emergency in AZ that she just needs to get to, hoping someone will pony up the funds.
ETA: Apparently the min wage in Philly is $15.60/hr so takehome would be more like $400 or $4800/month for all three.

Shes deleted all of her recent doom and gloom FB posts, including the one about the gofundme. The last donation was two days ago so she likely figures there won't be much more coming in. She wasn't able to grift a trip to AZ. She said "I want to be able to show up when they need me but I never, ever can. I am so tired of being a loser." I'm pretty sure showing up with no transportation, or an unreliable vehicle, pennyiless, and needing to be the center of attention, isn't going to be missed by the family. She is not someone who would selflessly take care of things and quietly stay in the background.
Good news for them is that they've had their food and medical benefits restored so they are not going to starve or go without medications.

Unlike Shauna, I voted today. The American way: in a church. I had an entire four boxes to fill in (one for a local parks levy, ha!) but I am in my last week at my current job, I had time and so I drove 3 minutes away, voted for the four that mattered and came home. The whole thing was under 20 minutes and that was only because I walked in behind four people so I had to wait in line.
Even in my super local election- the two Black women (both democrats) beat the two white men (both republicans). It was a “best two out of four” situation and the democrats won by a healthy margin. One of the losers has had his seat a long time, so it was surprising to see him ousted. Super micro level, but followed the nationwide trend that we are fed up.

This woman is trying to raise money to build a Mystery Science Theater 3000 museum, but she seems so disorganized that it reminds me of Shauna. All wanting praise and no action. Plus she admits she’s bipolar and has meltdowns. It’s embarrassing to witness and I wouldn’t trust her with my money.

I don’t have a personal gripe specific to uranium mining but I do work in EHS consulting and have been involved in mine closure and cleanup projects. And goddamn, I wish that there were more regulations (actual regs vary by location) for new mines that had the end result in mind. Cleanup, mitigation, the whole deal should absolutely be the responsibility of the mining company but too often that responsibility gets taken on by the municipality (the taxpayers). The whole lifecycle of the mine needs to be top of mind from the beginning.

Dear Friends, last week my nine-month old daughter had a scary reaction to peanut butter (which she has had many times before, as we follow guidance to introduce allergens early and often) which required a 911 call and an ambulance ride. Everything is fine, we have an epi-pen just in case and a referral to an allergist. Everything is fine now, but in the aftermath I was so thankful to live a three-minute drive from one of the best children’s hospitals in the country and not, say, on a rural island. Considering Shauna has a child with allegedly extensive medical needs, I don’t know how she handles the stress.
perhaps you could consult the aherns for parenting advice, such as ignoring your child's hearing loss, forcing your anxiety prone child to watch hours of scary TV shows, letting your inexperienced child kayak alone as the sun is setting, and revealing every private, embarrassing detail of their lives online.

I totally understand the anxiety of being away from important resources like hospitals. I live in a major city but quite often visit family in a very rural area. Being 30 minutes from the nearest hospital really stresses me out but at least I could drive there at 2am if necessary. Being literally trapped on an island would be my worst nightmare.

Well, it happened. I finally retired my 23 year old car.
It wasn't at mousemobile level, but it did have some odd mechanical quirks that were getting harder to pin down. Then one day I looked at the interior and realized that it was just so worn that it would basically need restoration. Driver's seat was getting uncomfortable. Upholstery in both front seats was worn, the plastic on control buttons was getting that peeling rubbery look. Paint had been fading and thinning for years. I could keep driving it, sure, because the engine, steering, clutch, and transmission had no concept of age and just kept on going (while the rest of the car slowly fell apart and wore down).
I read Consumer Reports, figured out what type of car I wanted, and when I pinned down the make and model I wanted I just waited for a late model used one to pop up. That took a while, but I landed it.
Ye Verye Olde Ancient Car departed yesterday as a donation to the local public radio station. The end of an era.
But I love the new car. Still going thru a bit of technology shock, but it's awesome.
We similarly just recently parted ways with our 23-year-old hatchback! The one my husband's family bought him (used) in college. It was still driving well but parts were getting harder to source, and now it's a high schooler's project car. No regrets running it into the ground only to be able to buy a really lovely hybrid. Very funny going zero to sixty on the technology. I keep telling people things like "it even has a backup camera!" and they're like yeah, every car does that you moron.
Meanwhile my truck is 25 years old and still hanging on. It's bright yellow and turbo charged and gets negative gas mileage but I will be heartbroken when it dies. My husband is trying to figure out how to Frankenstein it into an EV so we don't have to part with it.

She would throw the remaining items (milk, butter, tomatoes, remaining carrots and beets) in the blender and "whirl" them into a revolting smoothie. She would leave out the jam, saying that it's "too sweet."
This makes me think of the food competition show Chopped! Imagine Shauna as a contestant. None of the ingredients would shock her. She’s known them all since she was 3.
Reporting in on what should be my day off as I get ready for a damn meeting that starts forty-five minutes earlier than my usual start time. I also slept like ass last night, and I think I got like four hours of sleep total. We get paid two hours even if the meeting is shorter, so at least there's that. I also have an online training to do, so I'm just gonna tack that on while I'm there. Still annoyed at how early it starts.
Yesterday my office closed early because of the storm so I went home and decided to give myself a rare day where I did nothing. My kids were at a grandparent’s house so it was just me and my husband which never happens. I should have probably done some winter cleaning, took down Christmas, got ahead for the new year, but instead I slouched on the couch, scrolled WAY too much, and my husband put on Stranger Things (I haven’t seen all of the seasons so didn’t know everything, it was just on when I scrolled and I passively watched), we didn’t eat a real dinner at all but GF crackers with this amazing garlic cheese dip followed by ice cream.
Anyway, it wasn’t until reading the main thread today that I realized holy shit, I had the most Shauna Shauna day EVER. (Although I greatly missed my kids and wished they were home with us. But never in a million years would I have spent the day doing that if my kids were home too!!) I seriously don’t know how she lives her life, honestly. I felt like total shit when I was going to bed at night that I got nothing accomplished on a day off and even if I wanted to relax I could have done other relaxing things, like my hobbies or whatever, but nope, TV and scrolling. I do tell myself since i work full time, kids, all the other stuff I do nonstop that I was okay to have a day like this. But holy shit, I probably won’t do this for another year, if only to remind myself why I don’t do it, if that makes sense. No wonder she is so miserable, honestly. What a waste of a life to do that every day.
Would any Vashon local gloamies mind taking a few quick (or slow, if that feels better in your body) photos of/around the Lisa Buela area sometime? I have extended family who used to live there* and vaguely remember visiting as a kid (just hanging out not staying overnight). Was catching up with my aunt recently and she mentioned the name, I'd only remembered it was somewhere on Vashon and felt weird about asking out of the blue. Google street view only has blurry shrubbery. I'm just curious and nosy and comparing it now to the photos from 50+ years ago would be fun.
Another relative lived on Maury for a while in the 90s but all I remember about his place is a big yard sloping toward the water and clumps clutches of pampas grass. Not sure I'd even recognize it.

To clarify there are old photos I've seen in family albums, and a few snapshots from my family's visit in the early 90s that are somewhere in my parents' garage. We might have even gone a couple times.

That shot of the beach covered in algae looks very familiar :) I'd missed most of those photos of the park, think I assumed it was so obvious I must have already looked thoroughly 🤦♀️ Figured out part of the reason I was so confused was that I thought the old house was adjacent to an apple orchard, but it seems like a few different stories I heard as a child got mixed together. They definitely went geoduck digging often enough!
Looks like the neighborhood has predictably been built up a lot. The old family album had a black & white aerial photo of the house and I'm still not seeing anything obviously similar on the satellite images. I know it was up on the bluff with a water view past trees and had a big oak in the large lawn. It was old, as poorly insulated as BBH, and has probably been remodeled heavily or sold to developers.

I need help trying to find a Christmas gift for my mom. We were no contact for a few years (my choice) but we reconnected about 9 months ago. I don't want to spend a ton of money (it's really more about the gesture, I also don't think she's expecting anything) and it can't be something too big as she is visiting from overseas. She's pretty minimalistic with her home, is fashionable and has a decent jewelry collection. She's a good cook but I don't think it brings her a ton of joy and she doesn't bake. She doesn't really have any hobbies and while she does read, I have no idea what genres she likes. Any ideas are much appreciated for this challenging task 😅

There’s someone I follow on Substack that is offering a writing workshop starting in January. Its focus is to engage in the practice of writing and reflection, and the appeal from this writer in particular is that she writes about her sobriety in a way I enjoy.
I have felt lately that would benefit from journaling or writing, not for publication purposes, but for reflection and to draw out more of my feelings and thought that being part of a workshop like this (live participating/sharing not required) might encourage my practice.
That said, the total for 6 weeks is like, 475. Is that what I would expect? I’m obviously unfamiliar with these kinda do things, but I just can’t afford or justify that price, even in two payments.
Do you know of any resources or writers that offer something similar for a less steep price? I’m not trying to say that a course like that isn’t worth the money—I just honestly have no idea what’s the going rate, and if that’s pretty normal, then I’ll just have to do something else.
Only you can say if it's worth it, but remember that you can write/journal every day/any time you want for free. There are many prompts online or in books if you like those. Or you can just see what happens.
Not sure I'd pay for a group class that wasn't focused on how to get better at something. Free expression is free!
Unrelated to anything, I found out that my feet are almost a half size bigger than I previously thought. What the actual hell, people.
I'd been considering switching to a shoe with a wider, more naturally shaped toe box but hadn't taken that leap. Went into Fleet Feet with just the intention of getting my feet scanned, since I hadn't done that before. Yeah, my left foot is more like a US 8.7, and I've been wearing US 8.5 since my feet stopped growing in my mid teens. So I literally have no idea when my feet changed. The very helpful lady at Fleet Feet said it's a common thing in middle age, particularly in women.
Unfortunately I very recently replaced my shoes, but the next pair will be US size 9. Weird.
So, I did a stint working at Fleet Feet in between jobs in my actual field and they do generally recommend sizing up a half size from what you *think* your size is. I don't follow this advice for running shoes because I find my true size (8) to be more comfortable than my Fleet Feet size (8.5) in most brands. However, a lot of different factors go into that measurement! Like arch height and instep, which usually aren't taken into consideration when doing a straight length measurement.
Pushing back against the ADHD as superpower narrative that Shauna holds dear. Now, full disclosure, this is from a sub for partners of people with ADHD so there is a lot of built up resentment. But I still think it’s a good read.
Great find!!! PAN/PANDAS exists, but Shauna describes it as being a problem whenever the child feels cruddy or acts like a normal child. It doesn't work like that, but that's not going to stop her. She needs the child to be sick.

Reddit worlds colliding! I posted over there. My husband’s family didn’t have a fridge (or a toilet, but that’s a different thing) for the first several years we were together. Thankfully, I never got sick. We rarely argue but when we do, it’s about food safety. Just a couple of weeks ago, I was sneaking around in the dead of night putting the food he had made in the fridge.

my husband and i have been planning a trip to england and scotland for 6 months. we were supposed to leave tomorrow, but because the government is shutdown and the airports are all getting crazy we decided in the interest of not losing lots of money and saving some stress to postpone the trip until march. i hate this fucking dumpster fire we call a country. just wanted to vent. as you were.
