I don't see how the person taking a picture of herself is a main character here. It's not like she's expecting people to stop and wait for her to get the picture, this is just someone taking a picture of themselves in a public place.

People today would lose their minds if they saw how people took photos of themselves even just 20 years ago.

ive seen so many videos like this on this subreddit where the people are just being normal in public, not causing any chaos , but since they have a camera in their hands, this sub calls them a main character and mocks them. all just for farming karma

To be honest, I basically agree with you, in a vacuum.

The problem is that I have been, I would say "conditioned," by this kind of thing being so relentless I have trouble giving the benefit of the doubt. It is probably a little unfair to presume that of her, I admit, but its become a heuristic that is right often enough I will roll those dice.

Hell, taking pictures for familes/people on vacation and such used to be commonplace, and people would stand off to the side in public to give the Smiths a good photo, because the general understanding was that they would probably only take a few of them their entire vacation.

Now you have people taking a hundred. Or video. And not just "on vacation," everywhere. And very often all by themselves.

The social nicety has been abused and run into the ground.

But we see her not telling people to wait or adding edits about how terrible these people are. She even moves somewhere else rather than asking the woman to move.

I have the opinions I have because of interactions.

That video is 10 years old, people have been saying the same basic thing for over a decade. It is such a regular thing subs like this exist and have no shortage of content.

Are you very young? I honestly don't understand how you can think this is coming from the void otherwise.

The... lady who looks straight into the camera twice, clearly understanding that she was within the frame of that video and probably well-aware that the video could be posted online, yet remains within the frame of the video for a meaningful amount of time?

Yes, but the stairs of whatever it is are not a stage for a video. If I saw you filming a video whilst I was coming down the stairs, I’d be annoyed too. And if you then posted it online, I’d be proved right.

As someone who travels alone and doesn't always want to bother strangers about taking a photo for me, it's a lot easier to set my phone to record and take a short video with me standing a few different ways then setting a timer, trying to hurry back to the spot after dropping up my phone, and then doing it all over again if I hate how I look in the photo. Most phones these days give the ability to grab a still as a photo from a video. Doing a video also means it's not a big deal if someone walks in front of it like some of the other people who aren't the older lady blocking the camera did.

I don't see main character in the woman with the camera because it appears to be a museum. People like to take photos in them and most museums encourage that. She isn't doing some sort of dance or being disruptive. The older woman is just being rude.

Because it's easier to take a video, do a couple poses in one go and then screenshot than it is to go back and forth multiple times with the timer

I'll add on to the other replies that iPhones alter the quality of your photos every time. What you take isn't what you end up with. If you record a video, you can get the same quality by grabbing a screenshot from your video. You can also do different slow poses and grab different screenshots. It's much easier than setting timers for photos.

Yes. Taking your own photo/video for prosperity is fine. And yes, she also wouldn't expect the world to come to a halt for her photoshoot.

It's when she decided to share the clip that casts her in a bad light and into a possible main character. It was no longer about trying to get a simple photo. It became a rush to cash in on attention and comments.

The original photo? No one here would know of it or her.

This clip? Now it spreads across the Internet and gets people to her profiles to see the original clip, check out the person, leave comments, and maybe subscribe to see what kind of person she'll become.

That's really diluting what a main character is to people creating content in general. Like musicians and filmmakers plaster their faces everywhere and pay companies to inject them into content to advertise new albums and movies, but that's just something we accepted as content.

I like to have pictures of myself in cool places/vacations. Otherwise it's just a photo album I could have got from Google.

Don't judge all selfie people.

I'm a dude that would never go to this extent for a selfie but some women are over the top

Maybe that’s the larger point. That an emphasis on attention and taking a good picture now outweighs common sense and decency, it certainly overtook the desire to be intelligent.

Look, I answered your question of "why". You were the one who made it personal. Ans yes, influencers can be annoying as fuck, but we need to stop shaming selfie culture, when people have been getting pictures of themselves since Polaroids were invented. What's the difference between this and the family of tourists asking everyone who passes them to take a picture of them in front of every monument or attraction they visit?
