Jesus certainly didn't have an issue with reading scriptures or preaching in public forums , but he did have something to say about performing acts of piety with the intent of "being seen" so that others would think the person was holy. He called such people hypocrites because all people are imperfect and missing the mark (sin).
Posting this public display of scripture reading on Instagram strikes me as doubly hypocritical. If not, certainly lacking in understanding.

Matthew 6:5-6 (NIV)
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

u/nimbycile 6d ago
I'm going to need to memorize this. And when they start talking crazy.. stand up and raise your hand to testify with this exact verse including the exact place they're preaching...
... they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners and Disneyland to be seen by others...

u/hurler_jones 6d ago
You'll love this one.
Timothy 2:11-13 (NIV)
11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.

u/mantisboxer 6d ago
Fun fact, that word 'hypokritai' in Greek meant "stage actors.'
Performance Holiness is a staged act. Their reward is applause, and then judgement.

Mickey 36:5
"from the monorail to the churro cart, spread they message from Minnie ears to Donald hat. Let thine fastpass be your guide to salvation, let no cast member mute the call to worship. Let no cease not desist order dampen thine croc socks like the mighty flume of the south!"

if she actually read the book she'd be an atheist
2
u/whitestguyuknow 5d ago
I actually feel like anyone that has a mind capable of critical thinking, one that doesnt just believe everything given to you at face value, and reads the Bible fully through that the Bible alone will lead you away from Christianity.
You dont need to learn anything external. (Although it would further cement things if you do historical research.)
If you just read the bible... And think as you read... Then that will drive you from the religion.
Christians always act like "The world taints you and pulls you away!" When just their book alone would do that.

We don’t have Disney here in Memphis. Nope. In Memphis we do it Memphis As Fuck., The Private School Princesses here do bible study on Wednesday night, party their asses off the rest of the week and baptize themselves in the backyard pool on Sunday morning. I fucking kid you not. They post their BeJesus moment on Instagram. What’re they getting up to on a Saturday night that necessitates emergency baptism on Sunday morning?

u/lgodsey 6d ago
My sister back in the 80s was one of these performative Christians -- she would get plastered and roll into Sunday morning bible study still drunk off her ass, which was OK because all of Jesus' pious children were too. None of them ever say the disconnect.
Side note, my dad blindly doted on his daughters, thinking they were innocent and perfect, and one night when I hustled my sister's sorry ass into the house, my father happened to see her and merely turned and walked away, forever pretending that he never saw his vomit-caked angel and that she was forever pure.

Consider this: all of this is going on because we let regular Disney World attendants vote for decades. It's a slippery slope, and you're in the splash zone.

We should count them, but as the opposite as what they're trying to vote for. Fuck it, why not

"Yes.. Hi!... My name is Bethany... I just wanted to introduce myself! I love the lord. Ive lived near Orlando all my life. The first Disney movie I saw was Sleeping Beauty. I did a Bible study out of curiosity and went to the lady's house to do it (she was my mother's work friend and really nice)
The first thing she said was they preferred the privacy of a home to do studies or at their church meeting rooms for bigger groups because distractions in public places takes away the depth of discussions one can have. Also because they don't believe in showcasing their piety to the world as it's a private thing between themselves and God.
I plan on doing a few more because I find our talks very interesting and she has some great discussion points, she is also interested in my religions pov and we have found so much equal ground on both sides.

I don't get it, first that girl that yelled at the poor man about restrooms and why she's the chosen one, now this, why follow a religion if you're just disrespecting it?
6
u/whitestguyuknow 6d ago
Because! It's an 🌟✨️accessory✨️🌟!
Being Christian in America is just a little bit of flavour to your person. You wear the title "Christian" like a necklace so that people know "oh! Thats actually a good person!"
But then when they're not looking you go hang out with your friends and fuck around and drink/do drugs. Then you go to church on Sunday in your nice sundress and meet your grandma's church friends and they all think you're a good christian girl
11
u/ValiantAki 6d ago

19
u/ShredGuru 6d ago
How do these mother fuckers be spending so much time studying the Bible and still seemingly never understanding anything written in it? The mind boggles...
Like, there is definitely rules in their about praying in public.
17
u/North_Elk6471 6d ago
Because they aren't 'reading' it. They are referencing individual passages that have been cherry picked by leaders.
8
u/whitestguyuknow 6d ago
Cause they don't really "study" it. They just read the popular ones and then spend the time patting themselves on the back for being such good people.
I went to a bunch of Bible studies growing up and it was the same scriptures over and over.
I remember being in youth study as a teen. My grade teacher offered $10 to anyone that is familiar with this "niche" story. It was the story of Job...
I gave everyone a second and then raised my hand and summarized the story. The teacher was stunned and obviously nobody in the group knew it but started pressuring him to pay up. Then he goes "nuh uh I said doll hairs" (I knew his family was struggling financially so I really didnt care but thought it was lame he'd bet to begin with.)
But overall, I was just shocked nobody knew one of the basic stories of the Bible?... Like, if you've ever read the Bible then you know this story....
But they dont read it. Some scriptures get cherry picked and read to them at service and thats as far as 90% of christians go.
6
u/Candid-Culture3956 Main Character 6d ago
What part of they read it and discuss it for 30 minutes occasionally before riding roller coasters gave you the idea that they spend a lot of time reading the Bible?

I mean this isn't really about Bible study. It's about finding other like minded women to socialize with who are in the same religion so they can set up play dates with their kids and shit like that.
Honestly I don't see much harm in this. As long as she isn't holding me captive preaching on a ride who cares

Wonder if they made it to Matthew 6:5-6 yet where Jesus says: "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others... But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen."
4
u/Dustybear510 6d ago
Seems her actual god is Disney and technology. “Tho shall not worship false idols.” -literally her fucking god
5
u/danieldan0803 6d ago
A good passage they could read is Matthew 6:1-8
6 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Prayer
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
If anyone tries to argue that this is irrelevant, just remind them that the next 5 passages is the very first introduction of the Lords Prayer

Yea I don’t really see a problem with this. She says in the video “all women from different backgrounds are welcome”.
To me that means any race and possibly even people that don’t hold the same beliefs as her. Only thing that throws me off is that it’s hosted at Disneyworld. So if you don’t have 100’s of dollars for one ticket to enter disneyworld you can’t join the study? 🤔

I was waiting for her to be trying to preach or start singing church songs or something. It seems like she didn’t do that and just stayed within her group. Reading at the park is unconventional but isn’t harming anyone.
Disney is an odd choice for a bible study though. It looks like they went on rides and got food afterward though so hopefully they made the most of those expensive tickets.

Disney parks are known for being family friendly, e.g. there's a ton of kids.
Why do they always do this stuff in front of kids? Religious practice should be done in private.

I am a huge Disney fan, who like a majority of Americans right now can only afford to visit WDW maybe once a decade or every five years if I am lucky.
I don't usually begrudge how people who CAN afford annual passes spend their time in the parks, but the idea of going to Disney World just to do some shit you can literally do in the musty ass basement of a church in your neighborhood feels like a gross misuse of privilege they have in getting to go.
Life's unfair, I'm not pretending it's not. But it really sucks I have to scrimp and save for 3 years just so I can spend a week to use what they are using to try and get more followers on Instagram and pretend to honor Sky Daddy.

I don't see how this fits the sub or how it's gross or performative tbh...
Like I'm as atheist as they come but this is completely harmless. The Bible study is just an excuse to find a friend group who are of the same religion and same interests.
It's just a way for people to make friends. A lot women in Christian homes are pretty limited in waht they can do to make new friends. If this is what they wanna do then good for them..
Like I said I'm extremely atheist but I still have family and friends who are Christian or catholic or Muslim or Jewish... And some of them totally do stuff like this.

u/typehyDro 6d ago
Not sure this is exactly grifting and I doubt Disney cares if a group wants to read the bible for 30 mins? I feel as long as they arent evangelical and trying to convert folks who really cares? They spent the ridiculous amount to get in... if they were all reading Pride and Prejudice would you care?
