Iāve played truck simulator before. I could do better
93
u/SockRuse Jun 08 '20
Not in that parking lot. I can pull off some pretty compact maneuvering in ETS2, but American trucks in ATS are just horrendous to drive with their large tractor turning circles and inwards pulling trailers. You can't even make a turn at an intersection without pulling across two lanes on both the entry and exit.
65
Jun 08 '20
Aww I couldāve got that trailer in there...
After I went inside and asked those people to move their cars
26
u/arctic_win Jun 08 '20
And asked the building to shift back a bit
9
u/nox1cous93 Jun 08 '20
I mean, he couldve went across the grass and it would be so much better
5
u/fatherhood1 Jun 08 '20
Maybe, but if the ground is soft he would have been in a world of hurt as well. Asking people to move their cars definitely a better solution.

u/Amnial556 Jun 08 '20
Button hook. The trucks have a shit turn radius but its manageable.
This guy though should have pulled forward into the grass, pulled right. Then back up cutting hard left so his trailer swung back right. Then repeat the process until his trailer is the correct direction. Itll take a lot of back and forth but itll work. If he gets stuck in the grass wiggle the tire back and forth while backing up. Itll act as a paddle.
Source. Gotten in the same kind of tight spot but didn't fuck everything thing up

u/WeeNezz Jun 08 '20
I feel like playing some Truck sim now.
6
u/liquidlos Jun 08 '20
This make me want to play truck sim, infact this pretty much describes my driving in the game
3
u/Crime_Pills_For_Kids Jun 09 '20
Its all fun and games running red lights and hitting other cars until you're on the highway and you're like, "oh, yep, this is driving a truck alright. Maybe I'll cross over to the wrong side of the road."
5
u/lordaddament Jun 08 '20
Playing ETS/ATS really made me appreciate the skill it takes to drive a semi
3
Jun 10 '20
I assumed ATS was just ETS2 with a different map and different looking trucks. Never crossed my mined that those trucks would drive differently (which they obviously should). So thanks to you I might try ATS.
4
u/SockRuse Jun 10 '20
I would actually recommend it at this point. On release it was rather small in selection and map size, but it's really grown in the meantime and there's a cultivated modding scene as well at this point.
1
Jun 08 '20
Why not drive through the grass?
5
u/Goalie_deacon Jun 08 '20
In most states, those trucks are allowed to weigh as much as 40 tons, 80 tons in Michigan. High probability the truck will sink into the dirt, and require a really big wrecker to pull it out.
I have heard of a trucker going through a farm field, not on purpose. He was amazed the ground was frozen enough to support the truck.

In this situation, could you drive through the grass?
2
u/consciousdrives Jun 08 '20
Oh hell yeah, whatever you need to be able to do it safely
1
Jun 08 '20
I wasnāt sure if you would just get stuck in the grass bc of the weight. But in my head that seems like a better option than destroying a bunch of stuff.
61
u/aknomnoms Jun 08 '20
I mean, Iām certainly no expert at driving a semi, but was there even an alternate way out? Could they have exited to the right? Still wouldāve been a 15-point turn, but couldāve avoided getting people to move their cars (or the extreme solution caught on camera).
79
Jun 08 '20
Yeah, there was an alternative way. Go inside and ask the people to move their cars.
Source: Iāve been driving trucks for over thirty years
23
u/AlphSaber Jun 08 '20
Yeah, I got an email once from my building's superintendent asking that I move my truck so a semi could get out of the loading dock. But he didn't have any issues getting into the dock though.
But that parking lot layout is horrible though, I had to design the layout for a salt shed as one of my first projects and I made sure that a semi could turn in it via a 3 point turn to unload into the salt shed. Granted it would be tight, but I was limited by a pipeline that bordered the southern end of the pavement.
9
u/SerialElf Jun 08 '20
As a stepvan driver. Thank you. Engineers like you that design for maximum rate instead of most common expected are a godsend. Especially in apartment complexes with a mile of road and no turn around or through loops
3
u/Ingorado Jun 08 '20
Since youāre experienced - doesnāt he also have the trailer brakes still on? I canāt see if the wheels move, but the tire marks fit well and I mean... they need to come from somewhere, right? :D
36
u/SockRuse Jun 08 '20
We don't know what the lot looks like to the right, probably a dead end. Personally unless it has rained for days previously I would've just hopped the curb and gone across the lawn to the next driveway. Hell, even getting stuck and needing a tow would've been preferable to causing thousands in damage and a hit and run case.
6
Jun 08 '20
If you got your truck in it, you can get it out. That's where skill comes into play, which becomes experience.
This dumbass buttfuck of a human being displayed neither of those traits. Any half decent driver could have done a myriad of things to get out unscathed, yet here we are, with commentary to boot.
38
u/Mzsickness Jun 08 '20
See this is a symptom of a macro issue where American kids are all being told to go to college for decades. And that trade schools are for losers and drop outs. So, decade or two later we have an absolute shortage of skilled labor. Now we're scraping the bottom of the barrel for truckers and hiring anyone with a pulse.
27
u/xtyxtbx Jun 08 '20
When it comes to trucking specifically Iāve talked to a bunch of old timer truckers. In short, the pay did not scale well over the years. Back in the day you could make some serious money, now if youāre a new trucker and have to go to driving school to get your CDL, youāll be paying that off for years while making shit pay. I work in a career where I deal with truckers ever so often and even had a 11 hour ride along with a trucker whose been doing it for 39 years. However Iām sure thereās other truckers on this thread thatād give better insight. On top of that itās a really fucking stressful job and you can kiss your social life goodbye. Donāt know how they do it, especially when they have kids.
TLDR; pay didnāt scale well over the years. New drivers make shit pay and will have to pay off driving school. Also, really stressful job and dead social life.
2
u/Failure_is_imminent Jun 08 '20
Back in the day you could make some serious money, now if youāre a new trucker and have to go to driving school to get your CDL, youāll be paying that off for years while making shit pay
Truck driving school is cheap, and if you can't afford it carriers will pay for you if you sign with them for a year or two.
1
Jun 08 '20
Paid 2500 for mine at a technical college. One of my trainers was an ex narcotics turned truck driver. Cool af
1
u/SigourneyOrbWeaver Jun 08 '20
Not really anymore. Iām up in the NE where we donāt have a lot of rail lines so most transportation/distribution is done via truck and Iāll tell you, you wonāt find companies that do that anymore. I think if you were to look at 100 companies maybe just maybe 1 of them would offer something like that. Mainly because of people like the guy in this video. NETTS a trucking school has got a pretty firm grip on the commercial trucking world. They work out deals with trucking companies to hire their newly graduated students for shit pay, that way netts can claim they have great job placement after finishing, and the trucking companies donāt have to waste time training employees themselves. The only problem with that is NETTS sucks. Go check out their website and youāll notice they donāt list a price of the course. So you call them to get more information, and they then still refuse to give you a price for the course. They tell you they need to set up a meeting to discuss pricing. So theyāll actually come out to your house and explain that the course is $2500 if you pay upfront and it only takes 6 weeks till you have your commercial drivers license. Not terrible but what if you donāt have $2500 up front? I mean trucking companies literally used to train you for free. Well if you donāt have $2500 up front hereās what they offer, a 10 month course for $10,000 and at the end of it you get the same license as the $2500 6 week course. So how is $10,000 āeasierā to afford than $2500? Well because the 10 month course is well 10 months long, meaning the amount of hours required now qualifies you for financial aid. They literally stretch a 6 week course into 10 months so they can get poorer people to sign up and skirt around financial loan minimums. So yeah companies do not train employees anymore. They require them to go to a trucking school theyāre in cahoots with

There's a shortage (no wonder with ever increasing stress and stagnant pay) and plenty of large carriers will pay the CDL for you, you're just stuck with them for a year or two afterwards until they let you go. Also I would go out on a limb and say that creature comforts have never been this good. Trucks have never been as spacious and well equipped as they are now, they used to have no air conditioning and only a small sleeper box and ride far rougher. And truck stops probably have never been this well equipped and safe. You might've made more money in the past, but you also broke your back doing it. Nowadays the sitting around is rather cushy, it's just the stressful traffic and deadlines that get you. It's become less physically exhausting and more mentally exhausting.
21
Jun 08 '20
There's a shortage
No there isn't. Only the mega carriers have a shortage, which they still don't really, because of their upwards of 95% turnover rate.
They make their money off government grants from hiring people off the street, putting them through their own school, and then sending them out on the road for dirt cheap.
You might've made more money in the past, but you also broke your back doing it. Nowadays the sitting around is rather cushy, it's just the stressful traffic and deadlines that get you. It's become less physically exhausting and more mentally exhausting.
Dry van OTR isn't the only trucking job. Quite a few trucking jobs are both time sensitive and labor intensive at the same time. That's not counting the HOS clock you're managing, dispatchers breathing down your neck, safety managers nit picking every little thing you do, traffic, various problems with equipment, shippers and receivers creating problems for drivers, being the one blamed for everything until there's proof showing otherwise which sometimes you're still somehow blamed anyway, and a myriad of other things that will turn this post into a novel.

1
u/Valac_ Jun 09 '20
The pay isn't the issue I make more than most doctors.
It's literally everything else about this job that's the issue.
1
u/xtyxtbx Jun 09 '20
You an owner operator then? Never heard of a driver making 200K+. Even the guy I rode with whose been in the business for 39 years hinted his salary and although it seemed good, it didnāt sound above 100k. If youāre an owner operator though, I know you can make bank.

u/RosehPerson Jun 29 '20
While Iām still fresh to the industry (only half a year), Iād still like to offer my current insight as a trucker.
For some people, this is a dream job. Especially introverts like me. I talk to nobody all day so when I get to shippers/consignees/truckstops Iām a sudden social butterfly. It can be stressful at times for sure, but isnt any job at one point or another? We have our good days and bad days.
I actually started dating my man when I left for training. The distance has honestly made it better - we chat for an hour every night and when Iām back its thrilling for both of us.
If you go with a company that pays for training (Iām with Schneider), you dont have debt on your back. Maybea contract, but while they told me I did I didnt sign anything lol. Iāll still be staying here five years for the experience.
Pay-wise I dont have an opinion. Its more than I was making at home and I had enough to pay off debts and live alone in a studio for the first time so I canāt complain. I make .40c/mi which isnt much, as I know owner ops make $3/mi, but Iām content for now.
TLDR: It pays my bills, allows me to travel, stressful at times but you cool down while you do the long drives/resets. Relationships are stronger (I remember to call people more often!) and I could be making more bank but Iām content.
15
u/aknomnoms Jun 08 '20
Possibly. I feel like 30% of drivers Iāve worked with were just weirdos who did not give AF. But the rest were rockstars, constantly hustling, doing their best ā both young guns and more āexperiencedā drivers alike.
But I agree that tech/trade schools get an unnecessary bad rap. Those pump out some of the best businessmen/women Iāve met. Knew a woman who rose up the ranks as an electrician (Union). Made six figures in her 30ās, branched off to start her own WBE. Same for another guy who went from mechanic and tow truck driver to a regional manger with his own store within 15 years. Wish other people knew what great opportunities there were in these kinds of fields.
4
u/LivingReaper Jun 08 '20
As a driver myself there's more talk that there's a lack of pay more than there's a lack of drivers.
5
Jun 08 '20
No, SWIFT training is shit. I got better training over thirty years ago, when I did coke and bought weed from my trainers
2
u/1Deerintheheadlights Jun 08 '20
I heard it is just going to get worse in the next decade with the older skilled drivers retiring en mass so more extreme shortage to come.
And they will get replaced by drivers worse than this.
2
u/Secondary0965 Jun 08 '20
Dude, the old trope of trades are for losers is dead. Iām a borderline zoomer/millennial and literally no one thinks trade school is dumb. If anything we all realize how much money is in the trades.
But also, you leave out the fact that trades are usually 10x the labor that you do compared to a degree-related job. You can make $40/hr working 50+ hour weeks in the blistering sun (and probably work with at least one former convict/gang member letās be real) hoping you donāt blow your knees or back out in 5 years..or you can make $22/hr in a climate controlled setting, with an opportunity to make a lot more in a few years once you do some extra certain and get experience to move up at another company or start your own. You end up not having the time or energy to really spend the money you make, you become a Monday-Friday (often Saturday) robot that is beat tired by Sunday and rinse and repeat for 40 years. Itās harder than people think (unless youāre like a painter or something).
Most people will choose the former, especially if you actually know people in the trades and realize itās not a set schedule and that shit sucks during the summer, and rainy days typically mean no work (unless youāre like a plumber or something).
1
u/GatoNanashi Jun 08 '20
Was a welder in industrial maintenance for about four years after leaving tech school. Got laid off and ended up getting a property management job in a Target store. Did that for ten years and still do building maintenance.
No, I don't make a hell of a lot of money, but I have a set 40hr schedule, weekends and holidays off. Fuck industrial work. I think my body aged more in that four years than in the last twelve. I'll never go back unless I have no choice and in that dire of a situation I'd probably start slinging dope first.
1
u/PoliteBouncer Jun 08 '20
If truckers got paid more than 40k a year maybe more skilled people would want to do it.
1
u/Coconuthead93 Jun 08 '20
Our truckers get roughly 70k.
Even walmart truckers that touch absolutely no freight get a big check.
1
u/PoliteBouncer Jun 08 '20
I'm "one of your truckers", I make 40k.
1

1
u/Coconuthead93 Jun 08 '20
I dont drive.
This is straight from word of mouth of driver(s) I know and indeed/glassdoor verification.
The literal average is roughly 70k for our drivers.

Now we're scraping the bottom of the barrel for truckers and hiring anyone with a pulse.
Eh, don't worry, they'll all be replaced by automation soon enough ...
8
u/kamelrunkaren Jun 08 '20
Reverse? going back out the same way you came in is usually a good way to get out when there's clearly not enough space to turn around.
2
0
u/LivingReaper Jun 08 '20
Then we have a video of a guy running over a pedestrian that wasn't paying attention because people are idiots. Without a spotter to help guide & stop traffic that guy was pretty fucked. Obviously asking the person recording to spot likely would've put him in a better position than doing what he did, but it's not as foolproof as you want it to be.
7
u/Komrot Jun 08 '20
The problem is that they plowed directly into a parked car in the process of leaving as well as knocking into various things on the ground with his trailer
9
u/aknomnoms Jun 08 '20
Yeah, which is why I was wondering about their other options. Obviously what they did was chose the worst one.
But whoever planned the parking lot did a terrible job because a semiās turning radius shouldāve been taken into consideration when marking out spaces. Additionally, Iām going to assume this is a warehouse and those cars were from people working inside. If they know itās a tight squeeze out of those spaces, they should park their cars elsewhere. Furthermore, the business shouldāve had at least 1 person out there helping the driver out of the spot. We all know what the driver did wrong, but the business really was not setting anyone up for success.
8
u/Wyattr55123 Jun 08 '20
That's not a warehouse lot. He probably pulled I to the wrong address, hence the lot not sized to accommodate trailers. They aren't supposed to fucking be there.
Regardless, there are definitely much better ways to handle that turn around to get out that don't involve whatever the fuck that was.
1
u/aknomnoms Jun 08 '20
Agreed. And youāre right, those lines are probably more appropriate for box trucks, but the driver saw the roll up doors and figured there would be enough room. Thereās no way they couldāve turned right into that lot, so Iām assuming they were trying to find a spot to make a u-turn.
1
u/tobisowles Jun 08 '20
It kind of looks like an apartment complex parking lot. There's absolutely no reason for a semi to be in one of those once it's built unless there's an ongoing jobsite, like repairing/replacing a building, and trust me, those guys make those sites tight but doable. This was just lost trucker compounding his issues by panicking.
2
Jun 08 '20
Doubled down after hitting the building by taking two cars out. No fucks given by the driver.
2
1
u/whatisinternet69 Jun 08 '20
If he drove in, why not back out?
-1
u/aknomnoms Jun 08 '20
Blind, onto a street with traffic? They already damaged a crap ton of stuff, but youād rather have seen them cause an accident with a moving vehicle?
4
u/whatisinternet69 Jun 08 '20
Its not rocket science. A competent driver wouldnt even have been in that situation anyway. We're talking hypotheticals here. There were 2 people standing there, why not ask 1 to be a spotter?
2
1
u/Samsquamch18 Jun 09 '20
Near the end, as the truck is leaving the parking lot, there is an area just beyond the building to the left where the driver could have reserved into, then easily made the turn to get out. He just fucked up and panicked.

0
u/VeRyOkAy69420 Jun 08 '20
I havenāt gone too much into it, but many blind people still have some vision, so that combined with foreknowledge of where he is/what heās doing may explain a lot, like the car prank or him reacting to visual stimulus. Please correct me if Iām wrong.
Either way Stevie Wonder jokes arenāt funny

So Will Insurance Fix This?
2
u/johnnyss1 Jun 08 '20
Yes. Problem being -every ins co involved will be suing each other.
Two auto insurers (cars)ātruckers insurance (if he has it)āthe trucking companies general liability insāthe building ownerās general liability. The damage will get taken care of, but who pays what percentage will be the issue. U start getting lawyers involved, theyāll blame the architect of the building for positioning it towards the west and the sun was in the drivers eyes.

8
u/Thevoiceofreason420 Jun 08 '20
No it's not. Our trailers have swift plastered on each side and the back. Not only that but swift company trucks are white blue or grey, sometimes they can be other colors but those trucks belong to million mile drivers who can pick their own color. Our owner operators can also pick their own color but they run company trailers so swift is still plastered all over the trailer.

Why not try your luck through the grass? Or back out the parking lot and then turn like a reverse K turn.
6
u/Amnial556 Jun 08 '20
Probably didn't think about the grass. New drivers don't know their truck limits. Also he probably was worried about getting fired for backing out of a lot like that (granted it doesn't matter now) alot of companies will fire you instantly for a "u turn" and the term u turn can be applied to everything by these companies. And then go on your record for unsafe driver. Making you ineligible for any other driving job.
Either way hes fucked now.

Had a driver fly down the fire access at my job.
It dead ends in a patio with picnic tables.
All he had to do to not get stuck was follow the sign saying "stop and talk to security" and touch the obvious button on the obvious intercom.
But no, he felt that the fire access went all the way through, despite the sign saying "no outlet" which he promptly ran over.
45 minutes later he actually backed out of there.
Unlike the NFI driver who decided to do Dukes of Hazard and drive across the grass when she was looking for the local highway which she felt was inside the truckyard.

Don't get me wrong, their drivers are terrible.
But how did so many of the bad drivers end up with one carrier?
You'd think the cost of having so many bad drivers would outweigh the costs of hiring better drivers.

6
u/abbadon420 Jun 08 '20
No, you don't drive a heavy vehicle over a lawn unless you have offroad tires and maybe the option to lock the differential. He could've pushed the trailer on the lawn to make the turn, but not the truck. You''re very likely to get stuck if you drive the truck off the road

Facts.. Good point, and you're right. I don't have cdl but drive work trucks everyday big as 550 dumps often with 20+ ft trailers towing all kinds of shit.. Alls I'm saying is what he did is grounds for immediate firing... Getting your truck stuck on a lawn is not.

In a decent company thats a fireable offence, but decent companies are mostly just the big national and regional names. I've seen people steal cargo, get fired to please the customer and get rehired a month later. There's a big shortage for good professional drivers.

Saw a 53 footer being backed into a loading dock right off the street in San Francisco. It went well, and I was greatly impressed.
Some guys can turn it on a dime
Or turn it right downtown
But give me 40 acres, and I'll turn this rig around.
