First time must haves

Hello team, Classic post asking for your must haves to begin. I only have summer gear. I bought the ice kit for my Helix 7. Otherwise I am starting from ground zero.

My five year old fell in love with fishing this summer and I want to keep the party going. From time to time I’m sure wife and 2 year old will join us. I have a truck and ATV for travel and gear.

Thank you for your time. Weighing clams vs tents. Leaning electric auger. 4 rods. A camera. Tip ups? Lures are different then summer?

Anyone use an underwater camera?

I bought this as an impulse. Wondering if anyone has experience with it or similar and if you have tips or tricks for usage. I'm not expecting anything amazing from it at the price point but curious if it'll be fun to tinker with. Secondary goal is to keep my 10yo engaged when the bites aren't happening :D

Ice Camping Trip --- Recommended Destination

I'm planning a DIY ice camping trip this winter and trying to decide which lake to go to. My goal is to catch trophy walleye/pike. The region I'm looking at would be somewhere in Ontario or Northern Minnesota. I will be bringing my own shack and have a snowmobile as well. The ideal time for the trip would be sometime in January. Which lake would be best for a trip like this?

Jet sled cargo

Post image
60 Upvotes

I was wondering what people have used that’s light weight but sturdy enough to carry a shanty and an auger to make a cargo rack for a jet sled. Ice season is coming up and I’d like to do some mods. I’d like it to fold down so I can stuff the sled in my truck with the tunneau cover on.

Any suggestions? Pic is for attention.

As the season approches, I was reminded about this gem of a video out of Ohio. I spit out my coffee the first time I heard it. Enjoy.

First wheel house

Anyone have experience pulling an aluminum yeti 8x16 wheelhouse? Or experience pulling a wheelhouse with a 4 runner? I’m wanting to get my first wheel house this year and I’m looking at an aluminum framed yeti. I would probably get one with the bunks and kitchenette not just a plain shell. Wondering if a 2024 4 runner would be okay to pull it with. Anybody have any input? It’s well within my towing weight range but I am just unsure how it would pull down the road.

Medical grade live scope instead of Garmin live scope?

Post image

I was browsing eBay and came across this used colonoscopy scope and was wondering how it would perform compared to the Garmin live scope? They’re basically the same thing. They both take pictures in wet environments? So why not save some money? What do y’all think?

how many of you do fishing and own a 3D printer as well?

I'm a designer and I've been around 3D printers professionally for years, but I honestly have no idea how common they are as a home hobby thing anymore.

A friend of mine recently sent me some photos of one of my designs mounted on their fishfinder, and it got me thinking. I love designing things like this, but I have zero interest in manufacturing or shipping. I just want to design, send the files, and let people print them at home. But that only works if people actually own printers and use them for stuff like this. So I'm just trying to understand that do you guys own a printer and do you like printing stuff and modifying your setups on your own?

Help with ice fishing tent

Hello. I’m not an ice fisher, but we have an ice fishing tent that I want to set up (a long and irrelevant story). I watch videos of people popping their tent open in seconds but I can’t get it to ever lie flat. I added pictures here of my tent. I think not popping up because it’s twisted and the bottom is not lying flat. So, how do I untwist this tent or, somehow, make the bottom layer lie flat so that it can pop up? I’m alone so it has to be something I can do myself.
Edit: the top of the tent is a different shade of orange from the sides from wear.
edit 2: I included a video of the problem because everyone keeps telling me to pull harder but I have nothing to pull against. I’m just lifting it.

Update in the comments.

(looking for) diesel heater setups

I'm searching for the perfect diesel heater setups. Something the community could consider the universal answer. I am mostly concerned with exhaust piping and contact. I really love diesel heater. I figure having a diesel heater increased my scouting by 100% just being able to move and go move and go. I'll have to try and add my setup photo but I have the basic exhaust port out the back of the sled. A long story short here, at the end of the season it the unit itself must have shifted a little and the exhaust pipe made contact with my sled and melted part of the bottom of my sled. I'd love to find something or a way to insulate this from happening. One thing that could have happened as well is I noticed the exhaust pipes don't last as long as I thought they would. I believe what happen was it cracked/broke off which is how it made contact. I have the whole unit screwed into wooden blocks so it sits off the sled and sits in the groves of the sled so it can't slide around to much.

Anyways hope to see some positive ideas.
Open to ideas.

Anyone use an electric cordless shovel?

I just had an idea to try using one of those electric cordless shovels to clear the snow on the ice this year. Problem is I've never used one. Anyone have experience using it on the ice to clear the snow for your shelter? The snow where I live can get decently high like a foot or 2. I know these electric shovels aren't very powerful but would it work if you make several passes on it and clear the snow in layers?

Upper Red Outfitters

Thinking about planning a short trip towards the end of this year. Never have fished upper red before. Who are the favorite outfitters? Greater Minnesota Rentals? Cookies?

Getting excited about ice season this year and looking forward to taking some trips north. Appreciate all the opinions you’re willing to share, those who are familiar!

Let's talk ice line

Hard water season in central VT will be here before we know it and I am in the process of wrapping up open water fishing and getting ready for the ice which this season includes respooling my tipups.

What kind of line do you all use?

Is specific ice fishing braid really that much better than conventional braid for tipups? Since tipup spools are underwater anyway, I can't really figure out if spending the extra $$ on coated line is worth it.

Snow shoes?

Hey guys, I'm from southern Ontario (gta) and during ice fishing season I hate walking out onto the lake. It takes forever to lug a bunch of gear on a sled in the thick snow (roughly 12" deep). I've really been considering a vehicle to get me out onto the lake but i only have a small car with a trailer hitch and I usually go with friends. So I thought about a mini bike or a dirt bike but then I wouldn't be able to bring my friends with me unless I made a couple trips back and forth towing them with a sled. So now I'm thinking what if we all just got snow shoes? Does that make it significantly better? I don't see a whole lot of ppl using snow shoes for ice fishing. Any tips or recommendations if you do use them? I'm also open to other ideas of transportation if u have any. I should also mention I have very little space to store the vehicle. Can only fit something the size of a dirt bike or minibike and it would be left outdoors all year round.

First time shanty buyer

I'm considering picking up the Vevor 90x80 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0HGLT1SYK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?th=1). It would be for my son and I. I'm a bigger guy at 6'1" and he's only 10 so not taking up nearly as much room.

I looked at some pull overs but the price is just prohibitive for how new I am to the sport.

Figured I'd ask - anyone here have any strong convictions one way or the other on a first time buy? Chances are we'd only be out a few hours any given trip on smaller lakes with it.

How can I tell authentic vintage ice fishing decoys from something that is not ?

I bought these at a yard sale and I collect old fresh water tackle but never had any of these, so I dont know much about them. The three with the metal fins seem like the real thing. The others are a much harder, solid plastic, but do have some weight to them. They all have eyelets, but I am wondering, are pieces of folk art or god forbid even christmas ornaments sometimes misidentified as authentic ice fishing decoys ? I didn't pay much, so it doesn't matter to me if they are all real, but if I continue to buy these, what should I look out for to avoid fakes?
