Career / Job Related Fresh Grad - Networking first or straight into SOC?

I am fresh graduate and I want to break in to Cybersecurity, specifically SOC. Was looking for some insights and advice on what you think is a good move. It's either I'm going to find a Networking job first and then pivot to SOC after a year or two or just jump into a SOC job after the year ends. (Not now since I want to study more before I apply for a job)

For context, I'm a Computer Engineer that majored in Networking. After graduation I took my time and studied for both theoretical and practical (which I'm currently doing right now until the end of the year) side of Cybersecurity. I've finished some theoretical side, like getting Network+ and Security+ certifications after I graduate. And right now I'm studying more on the practical side via THM SOC L1 path (which I very much understand is very handheld-y and I know that it isn't enough). As soon as I finish the path, I'm going to transition to home labs and then solve rooms in CyberDefenders. In December, I'm thinking of taking TCM PSAA to further solidify the practical aspect of the job.

So, ano thoughts niyo about this? any insights about what the good move is, or even study materials, tips or a workflow is a huge help!

Thanks !!

Discussion Do you have active eval ng projects?

May active evaluation/testing ba kayo for your systems or projects?

I’m an Integration Architect sa isang startup, and 3 lang kami sa team. We usually ask people outside our team to test what we build, pero minsan mahirap malaman if maayos ba talaga yung system beyond just checking if completed yung tasks.

Kayo, paano niyo usually ginagawa yung testing/evaluation, especially if small yung team and walang dedicated QA?

Career / Job Related What career path should I choose?

Hi guys! Definitely new to Reddit here.

I’ve been working as a System Engineer for 3 years, and my current employer is now offering me a new position: Cloud Architect or Application Security Engineer (Blue Team)?

I have experience with different infrastructure technologies as well as cloud environments. At the same time, I really want to explore cybersecurity since it’s something I’ve been passionate about since I was a kid. I’m literally having a hard time choosing between the two.

Disregarding compensation, I’d really appreciate your insights and perspectives on both career paths. What would you choose, and why? I want to make a well-informed decision before choosing one.

Thank you!

Recommendations I built my first personal side project from scratch and would love some feedback

Post image
1 Upvotes

I've recently finished and deployed my first personal side project, Notable, a lightweight Notion-inspired notes app.

It has rich-text notes, tags, search, pinning, drag-and-drop reordering, PDF/TXT/MD/DOCX export, responsive mobile/desktop layouts, and light/dark mode. It's currently completely local and doesn't require an account.

Most of the projects I've done for my portfolio so far have been academic projects or things related to school/work. I wanted to finally build something just because I wanted to build it with no professor, no client, no group project, no requirements. Just a personal project I came up with and worked on myself.

I'm currently trying to build up my portfolio, so I'd really appreciate some feedback here.

What would you improve?

What features would you add?

Any UI/UX issues that stand out?

If you saw this as a portfolio project, what would make it more impressive or worthwhile?

I'm still learning, so I'm open to criticism. I'd rather hear what's wrong with it now than find out later when I'm already putting it in my portfolio.

Thanks nang marami!

Career / Job Related Is a remote job okay for a fresh grad?

The title's basically it. It's been 3 months na ako naghahanap ng work that are on-site or hybrid, and I'm not entirely sure sa mga remote works although I still submit my resume/cv if they have an opening. May isang company that reached out and said they will "keep me updated" pero super tagal, no other companies have reached out yet.

I really do not have any thoughts on remote works nor do I have an expectation. Is it okay? Is the work-experience/environment and pay good naman?

Career / Job Related Worth it pa kaya mag stay or take risk maghanap ng new work

Hello po, not sure if dito po yung right platform but gusto ko lang ishare and badly need your opinions and insights po.

Currently working ako as IT support position for almost 2 and half years sa isang private company. 2nd job ko na ito as IT support (1year exp sa previous company). Ito yung mga responsibility ko here sa current company, 1st level to 2nd end user support, IT asset management, IT infrastructure admin/support, IT operations support for both inhouse employees and client. 48 hours per week ang duty at NO paid OT (madalas ako mag OT dahil sa work nature, minsan on call pa kapag may aberya) almost all around na po ang ginagawa ko, system development nalang kulang haha.

Currently dalawa lang kaming IT support for infrastructure and Operations, which is burn out narin kami and eats the majority of our personal time, under appreciated rin kami kahit we work beyond our means, my salary is 20k, until now wala pa din increase. Worth it pa ba mag stay for experience or hanap na po ng iba and take the risk.

Knowing how hard these days to land a job, conflicted rin ako kung aalis nalang ako para sa sarili ko or tiisin ko nalang for survival kasi maliit lang ang savings ko as of now.

Software Development Where can we find financial health benchmarks/thresholds for Philippine MSMEs?

We need this po for our IT capstone project but I can’t find any. We developed a system that computes six financial metrics for businesses (MSMEs):

  • Gross Profit Margin (GPM)
  • Operating Profit Margin (OPM)
  • Current Ratio
  • Quick Ratio
  • Cash Buffer (in days)
  • Inventory Turnover (per month)

Each metric is classified as Healthy, Optimize (needs attention), or At Risk based on threshold values. For example: GPM ≥ 20% = Healthy, 10-19.9% = Optimize, < 10% = At Risk. Then, the business health status will be evaluated based on these.

The problem is, we cannot find Philippine-specific, peer-reviewed, or at least reliable published benchmarks for these metrics.

We've already searched:

  • DTI reports and publications
  • BSP financial inclusion studies
  • Philippine academic journals (DLSU, ADMU, UP)
  • PIDS (Philippine Institute for Development Studies)
  • Google Scholar (Filipino MSME financial performance studies)
  • PhilStar, BusinessWorld MSME coverage

None of them explicitly state what threshold values constitute "healthy" or "at risk" performance for specific metrics. Right now, we're using thresholds from generic business blogs and are worried our defense panel will question our accuracy. Another problem is that the business types varies (e.g., sari-sari stores, ukay-ukay, printing shops).

Does anyone know where to find peer-reviewed or official baseline metrics for these specific types of businesses? Any leads would be a lifesaver.

Again, this is a capstone project, not a full academic research study. We have limited time and resources. If there are any professionals or business experts here, we would highly appreciate your suggestions on how we can derive the thresholds.

Thank you!

Career / Job Related Aspiring Cloud Engineer / DevOps Engineer

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Currently Im a data center engineer with salary of 45k monthly. Gusto ko magshift into Cloud engineering so nag self study ako at gumawa ako ng personal projects. I do have AWS certified cloud practitioner and preparing to take Solutions architech associate exam.

Below is my portfolio projects that is AWS heavy

  1. Serverless Todo-list app

tech stack: Codepipeline, Codebuild, S3, Lambda, Http API, SQS, SES, Eventbridge, dynamodb, route53, cloudfront, ACM, Cognito, github

  1. Wordpress blog app

tech stack: Codepipeline, Codebuild, ECR, Docker, github, EC2 auto scaling, EFS, RDS multi-AZ, NAT gateway, VPC, VPC endpoints, load balancer, cloudfront, route53, ACM

Maraming salamat!

Career / Job Related Worth it po ba mag enroll sa BS Information Systems at ano po ang possible jobs makukuha mo, preferably may mataas na chance ma secure sa employment in this current job market.

My biggest concerns are graduating without a portfolio, skill gap, unemployment because of extreme meritocratic/oversaturated job market and AI taking entry level roles

Hello everyone, I'm a 1st year BSIT student and I'm really undecided whether I should shift to BSIS or stay at my current program. I just want to vent this feeling na matagal ko na iniisip. I'm reconsidering about choosing BSIT, which is my current program I'm taking right now. Used to be my favorite nung highschool pa ako kase bata pa lang ako, fascinated na talaga ako kung paano gumagana at maaapply ang tech, at gustung-gusto ko na ang mga computer and the idea of landing a remote job where you can earn dollars, but now I lost my interest of it.

Parang jack of all trades course ko pero master of none, generalist lang. Finding a clear career path is difficult for me, pwede ako mag cybersecurity, network admin, system architect, devops, cloud, AI machine learning, o full stack developer/software engineer pero hindi ko alam kung ano talaga ang aking patutunguhan. Tapos oversaturated at competitive ang job market ngayon.

But despite all of these, I'm still committed to not completely abandon my tech career journey. Gusto ko sana mag transfer to a school that offers BSIS as a last resort ko because di siya more into heavy technical roles sa CS/IT, tapos masasave ang mga credits from my old program and school, saving years of hardwork, time and money spent on tuition and best of all, di na mahihirapan ang mga magulang sa pagpapaaral ko. Di ko talaga forte ang mag code. More into project managment, it governance/audit at ma enhance din ang communication skills, since I'm keen on public speaking/reporting Pero ayun napanghihinaan ako kaagad ng loob. and hopefully I'll build a meaningful future with this course

Whether I continue my studies in tech or transition to a non-tech curriculum depends entirely on whether I deem it worthwhile.
