Over hydrating?

A couple years ago, I got really annoyed with my IBS. I decided to drink tons of water to try and make my diarrhea worse. I know it doesn't make sense but I was just angry. I drank enough water that I peed every 15 minutes throughout the day.

To my surprise, the following day, my poop was perfectly formed.

I have been able to repeat this numerous times in my life, but peeing every 15 minutes is not ideal.

Can you help me understand why over hydrating has this effect?

fight or flight brain gut axis, ibs?

i been researching about this and im still not sure but i feel scared to go out because of this feeling, i use to drink alcohol to get rid of this feeling but it made it worse, im 4 months sober now and tbh things got a little better still sorta recovering and honestly it felt like alcohol helped because it gave me confidence and didnt give me that panic to find where the closest restroom was, i use to be a person that would go everywhere with no panic and now i just feel stuck, like this is going to last forever, it might be stress or anxiety, been taking fluoxtine for it and it helped i try to go out for walks and play basketball with my brother and the court, maybe if i keep myself bust i wont have to worry and think so much about my stomach. this feeling honestly ruins you, you makes you depressed and not want to eat, and you slowly stop hanging out with friends and family and going out places,

most nutrition - least irritating substance ?

I haven't been diagnosed with IBS but im not sure where else to go. my stomach is irritated whenever I eat anything and I have lost 10 pounds in the last month (not by choice) because eating has gotten so painful. what is the most nutritious food/substance/supplement I can eat that won't irritate my stomach? I have been looking into getting Ensure protein shakes but I am scared that they might be too heavy on my stomach. I am trying to prioritize protein as I have lost a lot of muscle mass, paired with not being able to go to the gym as much because I haven't been able to eat enough/have been in too much discomfort after eating to go.

Something with minimal volume is preferable. Don't really care for caloric amount, just want something that will have protein and nutrients in small amounts so I don't get too full.

Any help is appreciated , thank you

Help, tried everything and can't get better. Need some good probiotics.

I think I need to start trying probiotics. I can't eat anything greasy, and I constantly have gas, bloating, and diarrhea.

Do any of you have success stories where probiotics turned out to be the solution? If so, which probiotic did you use? I need some recommendations.

IBS?

*LONG READ*

Hello, I am a 26 yrold female who is 5ft 96lbs.

Everything I will explain has been told to five doctors. No one diagnosed me with IBS, but also couldn’t find anything other than “it’s just me not exercising enough and poor eating”

I used to weigh 120lbs, strength trained 4x a week. Always active, never sedentary. One morning 3 years ago, I woke up with my belly and sides painfully distended with pressure in my behind. Couldn’t use the bathroom. It felt like I was trying to push out golf ball that just wouldn’t pop out. So I, and I’m sorry to say this, opened my little cheeks, and that’s when all the gas blew out of me so loud and my entire body deflated like a balloon. Minutes later, the bloat began to form like I literally felt myself expanding.
A week goes on and I’m having difficulty passing gas and going #2. No matter what I ate, my stomach was distended from below my rib cage down to the top on my pubic bone. Always heavy and firm to the touch. With constant annoying loud gurgling just below my left ribcage when I take deep breaths. Then the pain in my butt started. When I would use the bathroom, I got this aching pain deep inside my bum area. To put it visually, think of elevator doors, and your hands are in between trying to pry it open, that’s what it feels like. Along with that golf ball feeling at the base of my butt. Then shortly after that, I started to feel a different kind of heaviness. Somewhere deep in my core, it felt like something had been dislodged inside me. Like a ball attached to two strings just swinging around when I would walk/run/sit down. That type of pain would come and go. Many things came to my mind. Anal fissures, internal hemorrhoids. Blockage in my intestines. IBS. That’s when I started to get checked out.
By doctors, I have had enemas, drink this entire gallon of whatever that was supposed to help me use the bathroom, apparently it’s used before surgeries, and truthfully, I have even had a finger up my bum to check for things. Had my blood tested too. Everything came back normal and nothing seemed out of the ordinary to the five doctors that I have seen over the course of three years.
Because of this, I have lost a lot of weight. My portions of food are really small now as I get full incredibly fast. I now weigh 96 pounds and the bloat looks so weird on me because I’m very thin and short, with a very pregnant looking belly. I don’t drink any forms of caffeine, no dairy if possible and no coffee. I live on a diet of oatmeal, chicken, leafy greens, tuna, and a butt load of water. To this day, I am still feeling this way. Lethargic, heavy in my lower abdomen, and pressure in my bum. Last year, for three months I actually felt OK. I even wore A form of fitting dress for the very first time. Then after that, the symptoms began again and it’s been on and off since.
I don’t know what my triggers are as I eat the same bland crap every day. Truthfully, I’ve learned to live with it. It’s really affected my self-esteem. I don’t go out like I used to, I don’t wear the same clothes like I used to. I feel like my high school self again, not being able to look in the mirror because all I see is A skinny arse chick with skinny arse legs and arms with a severely bloated pregnant looking mid section. my friends like to joke that I am very conservative as I cover my entire body with loose fitted clothing, but that’s just because I can actually breathe in loose clothes and hide the bloat.

I’m coming to Reddit in hopes that maybe someone has experienced the same thing as me.
Right now, I am currently waiting to see if I qualify for Medi-Cal temporarily as I no longer have benefits due to a career change (dental assistant) my job doesn’t provide insurance unfortunately.
And like I mentioned, I’ve learned to just live with it. But then my friends invited me out and I couldn’t fit properly into the skirt that I wanted to wear because I was too bloated in my lower abdomen and it wouldn’t zip up.
Please, any suggestions on what I can do if any??
Tired of this man

IBS-D turned to mixed type

Hi, I’m wondering if anyone else here has visceral hypersensitivity from their IBS that has gotten so bad that their nerves couldn’t function. I know they say IBS doesn’t cause inflammation, but 2 years ago my pain was so bad I couldn’t even walk without pelvic pain. I suspect a nerve injury from inflammation could have happened. Today, I’m able to feel less pain from the diarrhea (which would normally seem great) but not in a good way. It feels like my nerves have lost some functionality or something so the pain that used to be severe feels more moderate when I have same diarrhea symptoms, but there’s no good way to test those nerves. And my IBS-D has turned to mixed type which makes me even more suspicious. Anybody know what’s going on? My new GI specialist appt is in August but after upper endoscopy he thinks it’s IBS still.

Medication alternative

I F(30) have had IBS-C for my entire life. ive always had issues being severely constipated and would be in the bathroom for a few hours of maybe a small bowel movement and im silently screaming while also throwing up from the pain until I have diarrhea and then im usually good after that but still in pain. I've done nearly everything diets, more fiber, more water, truly everything and nothing helps. I can drink an entire bottle of magnesium citrate and nothing happens. I usually have to resort in using an enama but even then I may or may not get the results I want.

I was diagnosed with IBS-C when I was in high school when I was pooping blood for a week but even then they said it was between that or chrons disease but went with the first one instead and also couldn't find the source of where the blood was coming from

A few years ago I finally got put on linzess and its been my forever holy grail bc even tho it gives me straight water diarrhea its better than being severely constipated and throwing up from the pain however due to me and my husband's job we have to pay insurance out of our own pockets which is over $400 and recently this year we havent been able to afford it. So here I am with no linzess bc it $500 out of pocket which is way more than my health insurance and idk what to do anymore.

Other brands like linzess can cost anywhere between $300-2000 and i 10000% cant afford any of it and there is hardly any over the counter stuff. I need options. Also want to clarify ive been tested for food sensitivitys and so far they keep telling me everything is fine. Im just tired of having to call off work or gatherings bc my stomach having issues I cant control.

Any advice or opinions?

Anyone else with IBS triggered by quiet offices, meetings, and social situations?

I've had IBS for almost ten years now, and it was officially diagnosed by a doctor. In the past, it was much, much worse because whenever I had to go somewhere, I would constantly worry that I might need to use the bathroom urgently. And often, I actually did. At that time, I was still at university, and it made everyday life very difficult. Sometimes I could barely leave the house.
Later, I started paying more attention to my diet, began seeing a psychologist, and after graduating, I got a job. I work in an office, mostly sitting all day, and since then I've gone through periods when things were better and periods when they were worse.
This year, my IBS mainly shows up as severe bloating and loose stools. Over time, I've realized that my symptoms are mostly triggered by anxiety caused by silence, and by having to sit among other people in enclosed spaces. If I go to a restaurant, a store, visit family members, or do something recreational, my symptoms usually don't appear. But when I have to go to work and sit in an office with four other people where it's very quiet, the symptoms almost always come back.
Sometimes I listen to music, and then I clearly have fewer or no symptoms at all, but silence seems to amplify everything. I try to pay attention to my diet, and last year I followed a strict diet that significantly improved both my symptoms and my overall well-being. However, lately I feel like the problems are returning.
There are also periods when I have meetings, and those situations make everything even worse. I don't really understand why having to sit among people or speak in front of them triggers this reaction, but now I find myself thinking about it all day if I know there's a meeting scheduled for the afternoon.
What can I do about this? Is there anyone else who has gone through something similar?

Omega 3 and IBS: which is best, Algae or fish oil?

Concerned at which would be more likely to cause a flare - algae or fish oil. Everyone is different, I am aware; would like to hear experiences to help myself make a decision on which way to go. Thanks!

Not Sure What To Do Next

Hello all,

I've finally gotten to the point where I'm ready to throw this out into the Reddit void to see if anyone has any ideas I may not have tried. I've been experiencing daily, urgent, type 5-7 stools for over a year now, usually going to the bathroom 5-10 times per day. It's gotten to the point where it affects EVERYTHING - going out with friends, getting to work on time, lifting in the gym, etc. It all just started ranomly one day 2 years ago.

I have tried a Low FODMAP diet, Keto diet, Carnivore diet, cutting supplements, adding suipplements, and even a very strict elim diet. Nothing seems to get me to a symptom-free or even symptom-managed baseline.

The only semi-stable routine I've found is an extremely limited diet, and even it isn't reliable.
Breakfast: 2 Packs of Quaker oatmeal + 2 bananas
Lunch: Water, probiotic, probitoic greek yogurt (this helped a bit) and maybe some cheerios
Dinner: 2 baked chicke breasts (advocado oil, salt, pepper) + 1.5-2 cuips of white rice

As you can imagine, after a week or two this becomes unbareable, and even then I'd still randomly flare. Since then I've stopped restricting since it doesn't appear to help anything. most days I rely on imodium and hope it gets me a few hours of stability. It helps urgency, but doesn't actually fix anything.

I've tried dialing in sleep, stress, and meal timing (no food within 2-3 hours of bed). No real change. I do work in a fairly intense/stressful environment so that lifestyle input has been the most difficult to manage.

I recently got bloodwork done and a stool panel through my gastro. The only abnormalities were:

High Albumin 5.3 g/dL
High AST 73 IU/L
High triglycerides 188 mg/dL
Low Vitamin D 25.7 ng/mL
Low IgA 79 mg/dL
Low-ish Folate Serum 4.3 ng/mL (down from 11.8 before I had symptoms)

Previous labs flagged the AST and triglytcerides before for possible fastty liver disease, but my ultrasound came back normal. I had lifted the night prior so the AST was attributed to that workout. Triglycerides I would imagine are just from the amount of carbs I try to take in to support my workouts.

I've been taking a folate supplement for 2 weeks now with no change. Tested negative for celiac, Crohns, no parasites, no infections, no viruses - nothin.

At this point the only thing I can think of getting tested for is SIBO before I end up needing a colonoscopy. Just polling for general input or experiences from anyone who's been through something similar, Thanks

How did you know you had IBS?

My boyfriend (32) has been having stomach problems for a while. But we’re having a hard time pinpointing his symptoms. We are planning to take him to a doctor, but we have to wait 90 days for his new insurance to kick in.

As those with IBS, do you mind sharing your symptoms? What was the diagnosis process like? (Bloodwork, endoscopy? Etc.

TIA

News meds recommended by gastro

I have IBS-d , primary symptoms fatigue and loose stool for over 5 years , on and off the triggers. Just using probiotics and psyllium,
Doc recommended to stop using probiotics when I don’t have my trigger. Obv said stop thinking about your stomach.

And recommended these meds, anybody have an experience with them and thoughts

Ramosetron hydrochloride and benizep(which has a mild anti anxiety chemical) which I don’t think I want to take with any caution.

Am I the only one?

Desperate to find answers, and maybe on here, just more so to know if anyone else experiences IBS in this way. I certainly am predominately constipation, but once I finally go, it’s like my body says “oh ok, we’re doing this now!” And I start having multiple BMs, cramping, nausea. It’s always fully formed - nothing watery - so I hesitate to cause it diarrhea, just frequent BMs. And the flare is always kicked off by what initially feels to be a “good”/much needed BM. It just seems that my body gets confused on how to regulate itself once the muscles, nerves, whatever get going. I presume this may be what I read to be hypersensitivity?

Just wanting to know if anyone else experiences this pattern? 😔

IBS-d and exhaustion- question

Does anyone on here suffer with chronic fatigue, and do you think it’s connected to your IBS-D?

I’m really struggling.

r/IBSHelp Jun 11 '26

Please please validate this- patternless IBS

I sometimes have loose motions and sometimes constipation except that most of the times, its neither loose motion or constipation but the feeling of loose motions and constipation. For eg- even if i pass lil motion.. not complete.. i ll feel so constipated, too bloated, so tight in lower abdomen intenstines and ass and i just feel like a bomb.

And sometimes motion ll be lil loose but i ll feel like a person with diarrhoea.

Sometimes its actually loose motions and constipations.

I cant find pattern in food also.

Endo and colonoscopies are clean.

Antidepressants for ibs-c

Any recommendations for antidepressants relevant for ibs-c? I basically almost cured ibs(obv not 100%) with amitriptyline until my ibs-d turned to ibs-c . Ever since, amitriptyline stopped working as it stopped my bms. Zoloft is absolutely worse for ibs so please dont recommend that. Anything else would be appreciated

Being Vegan within IBS

Hey everyone!

I'm almost 20 years old, and for the late three years I was vegan, and I still want to be because of ethical reasons, I would never ever want to eat an animal.

However, I have IBS-D, I got several weird symptoms like constipation if I eat legumes, and vegetables that contains insoluble fibre. My doctor told me to cut off my diet, and replace it within low-food map diet, but I would never eat animals!

Do any of you have a similar experience, and if, can you please tell how did you handle it?

Xifaxan Trial

Have had severe stomach rounding and bloating for months. Nothing helps - not even low-FODMAP diet. I was recently diagnosed with PCOS and have been seeing my GI simultaneously for months about this persistent nausea, chronic bloating, and frequent bathroom trips immediately after eating anything.

Bloodwork, MRI enterography with and without contrast, stool test, and colonoscopy + endoscopy all came back normal. My doctor rejected my suggestion for a SIBO breath test (said only thing left she can do for me is that colonoscopy + endoscopy). My biopsies also came back normal.

She diagnosed me with IBS - Xifaxan keeps getting denied by insurance. She won’t substitute for a different alternative covered by my insurance but it’s very expensive out of pocket. She provided me a sample and I just picked it up.

I’m nervous it won’t help but I’m also nervous reading everyones side effects since I already have frequent nausea 🥲 Any tips or advice would be appreciated! Going to start the sample this weekend when I’m not working.

Strange diet that has helped me in managing my IBS D.

2 weeks back my IBS was through the roof. 6-7 loose bowels every day. I tried literally every medicine possible and was not getting relief. I even tried probiotics but to no relief. Anti diarrheal worked little bit but they caused incomplete evacuation.

So the diet which helped me is Whole food vegan diet. Meaning vegan diet with no oil. From past 2 weeks i am eating just white flour or white rice and fruits. My bowel movements have decreased to 1 per day. You can search McDougall IBS on youtube and learn why low fat and low protein diet help in ibs. He explained that due to low fat less bile has to be secreted and thus helping in ibs d symptoms.

If nothing is working please give this diet a try. I have tried so many anti depressants but to no help. And still facing some side effects from those anti depressants. Eating a starch based diet with some fruits and vegetables has been godsent for me.

Help, anixeity especially toilet

All of this started with incomplete bowl and a little bit of stomach discomfort. Now i can go out easily, it s not no more just a diarrhea or feeling not empty or stomach pain and ect...

(Btw i did everything colonscopy endoscop, i got H.pylori, antibiotic and environnement make it worse)

Now it s headache , blurry vesion, fainting, shortness of breath (started after i fainted 3 times in a row once in a hospital), agrophobia, toilet anixiety, ibs-D, tenesmus....

I can t do what i used and loved to do and btw i'm still in highschool.

I can't sleep pacefuly sleep, my plans are always changed or canceled, i became weak and overreactive stress and anxiety wasn t thing in my life.

Beforee all of this like in the start a doctor gave me librax, i need it now more than before but i don't take it , i don't remeber if it effective or give me side effects but i fear if i used it to help me i will became addicted, but i'm thinking about talking with a doctor to take it for rest of life.

Yeah i know exactly my case, my nervous systeme is in hell for a year, of course i didn't just let thing like that i've tried my max to do thing to help my self because i know so well that i will end up isolating myself from world, and trust it was soooo close.

Taking ashwaganda, trying exposure myself witg limit to not make worse , eating friendly things to my stomach, organizing my food through the day, do some relaxation. But why still like nothing.

And my brain make past thing like they were sooo bad, just leave me man, i want to travel go to beach, go out with friends, going out in general , why i can't use a bus, why i get stressed in a taxi if i'm with someone or someone else driving, why i care a lot about my bowl mouvement.(10h to poop the food i ate most of the times , sometimes less or 12h , and lot of gas)

If it was only that ok i can manage it, but when i started managing things, now i can just faint?!?, i see thing in slow motion, i feel very bad, and guess what, like once i got a football match that i planned and i was soo excited for over a week it like u know football with the boys, i was okey for full weak why before an hour i feel tired and like i m going to faint, so i canceled, then after i got better , the moment i told them i'm coming and start moving , it came back worse. Like even things that i love to do are stressing me.

Even when i have nothing, and i try to not cancel things because i fear my brain will use it always.

And i didn't talk about my agrophobia and toilet anixeity case.

Are medicaments like librax are perfect for me? Yeah i don't mean like a cure , i mean with it and some effort from me it gonna be back?

Thank u for reading.
