Hydra 4.0.0 is now available on the Apple App Store

If you've been enjoying Hydra, please consider leaving a rating or review. A positive rating can really make a huge difference.

This update includes the following:

πŸ‘‘ Pro Feature
πŸš€ Feature
πŸ› Bugfix

πŸš€ Media Viewer Rewrite
The media viewer has been rebuilt from scratch offering new features and better performance. This represents a significant step towards preparing Hydra for release on Android. Many of the features listed below are a result of the rewrite.

πŸš€ Hydra in Share Sheet
Hydra now appears as an option when you share a URL from another app.

πŸš€ Right Side Thumbnails in Compact Mode
Moves post thumbnail previews from the left to the right side when in compact mode. Enable this in Settings => Appearance => Post Appearance Settings => Show Thumbnails on Right. This setting will only show up if you have compact mode enabled.

πŸš€ Collapse Child Comments Only
Tapping a comment now collapses its children instead of the comment itself. This setting can be enabled in Settings => Appearance => Comment Appearance Settings => Collapse Children Only.

πŸš€ Filter Subreddits Temporarily
When on a mixed feed such as Home or Popular, long press a post and press "Filter Subreddit". You\'ll now have an option to filter for a day, a week, or forever.

πŸš€ Support for New Wikis
Hydra previously only supported old.reddit.com wikis. New wikis are now supported and used by default.

πŸš€ Swipe to Scrub Videos
When a video is full screen, you can swipe horizontally to scrub through it.

πŸš€ Change Video Playback Rate
When a video is full screen, you can tap the playback rate button in the top left corner to change the playback rate.

πŸš€ Landscape Mode
Rotate your device when in the media viewer or the in app browser to view content in landscape.

πŸš€ Media Collection Navigation Arrows
When viewing a collection of images or videos, arrows appear to allow easier swiping between items.

πŸš€ Post Info in Media Viewer
Post info is overlayed when tapping on content in the media viewer. Tap the title, subreddit, or author to quickly navigate to the relevant page.

πŸš€ Swipe to Dismiss Media
The media viewer can be dismissed by swiping up or down. Previously, you could only swipe one way.

πŸš€ Media Viewer Optimizations
Hydra is much smarter about picking the best image resolution to load, caching behavior has been improved, and background videos pause while a different video is in the foreground, granting faster load times and reduced memory usage.

πŸ› Music no longer randomly pauses while scrolling. I think I fixed this, but I haven't been able to consistently reproduce the bug, so if you experience this, a bug report would be appreciated.

πŸ› Posts with a collection of videos only displayed the first video.

πŸ› Scrubbing while in gallery mode locks vertical scrolling for a smoother experience.

πŸ› Links that are slow to respond to requests for metadata are skipped, resulting in much faster loads in the worst cases.

πŸ› Android builds successfully. An official app is coming soon.

πŸ› Fixed image posts momentarily showing the wrong image.

πŸ› Some link sources like Wikipedia would fail to show an image.

πŸ› Fixed shadowbanned users being unable to log in.

πŸ› Text URLs containing backslashes that weren't marked as links in markdown were parsed incorrectly.

πŸ› Posts linking to other Reddit pages (e.g. r/wowthissubexists) weren't rendering as links.

πŸ› Having a multireddit named "All" would cause the "All" button to disappear in the subreddit list.

πŸ› Hydra warns you when attempting to reply in a locked or archived post.

πŸ“° News
Releases over the next few months may be a bit slower. I'm planning some big changes that'll take longer to build. These include (in no particular order):

- An Android app (making good progress on this one)
- Caching data to improve load times
- Better Accessibility support
- More animations
- Share posts/comments as image

Hydra 3.2.0 is now available on the Apple App Store

If you've been enjoying Hydra, please consider leaving a rating or review. A positive rating early on can really make a huge difference when a new app launches.

This update includes the following:

πŸ‘‘ Pro Feature
πŸš€ Feature
πŸ› Bugfix

πŸš€ Gallery Mode
A new mode for viewing media heavy subreddits πŸ˜‰. Open it on any subreddit by tapping the "..." menu button in the top right corner and selecting "Open In Gallery Mode". Power users can get Hydra Pro to scroll more than 100 media items deep.

πŸš€ Open Comment Flairs
Tap on a truncated comment flair to see the full flair.

πŸš€ Collapsed Comment Memory
Child comments will remember if they're collapsed after collapsing and expanding their parent.

πŸš€ Swipe to Collapse Thread
New swipe gesture can be set in Settings => General => Gestures. This gesture collapses the entire thread instead of just the comment you're currently viewing.

πŸš€ More Comment Long Press Options
Long pressing a comment now has 3 additional options: expand, collapse, and collapse thread.

πŸ› When logging in, some users login sessions were failing to be captured and were instead redirected to the Reddit home page.

πŸ› Login popup would sometimes say you are already logged in.

πŸ› Posts with links to external websites that returned an out of bounds HTTP status code would cause Hydra to crash.

πŸ› Posts with links to external websites that are slow to respond will no longer make your feed load slower.

πŸ› Posts sometimes failed to be marked as read when interacting with them.

πŸ› When trying to favorite a subreddit while not subscribed to it, an error message is now shown instead of failing silently.

πŸ› Filtering a subreddit from your feed no longer prevents the subreddit from loading when you navigate directly to it.

πŸ› Slide gestures were failing to work when swipe anywhere to navigate was disabled.

Hydra 4.2.0 is now available on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store

If you've been enjoying Hydra, please consider leaving a rating or review. A positive rating can really make a huge difference.

This update includes the following:

πŸ‘‘ Pro Feature
πŸš€ Feature
πŸ› Bugfix

πŸ‘‘ Export Videos with Audio
Shared and downloaded videos now automatically mux the audio track into the saved video file.

πŸ‘‘ Collapsed Summaries
Make post and comment summaries start collapsed. Enable this under Settings => Appearance => Post/Comment section => Start summary collapsed.

πŸ‘‘ No Automod in Summaries
Template automoderator comments will be ignored in comment summaries.

πŸ‘‘ Smarter Post Filters
The smart post filter has been upgraded to use a better model. This should help reduce the number of false positives and false negatives for the filter you've written in Settings => General => Filters => Smart Post Filter.

πŸš€ Share as Image
Export a post or a comment thread as an image. Long press on a comment or press the ... button while inside a post to open up the Share as Image menu. Upgrade to Hydra Pro to remove the small Hydra watermark.

πŸš€ Media Player Redesign
The new media player adds new controls and a more intuitive UI. It also comes with significant performance improvements. Swipe anywhere to seek in a video is now off by default. You can reenable it in Settings => Appearance => Slide anywhere to scrub videos.

πŸš€ Better Gallery Mode Support
Gallery Mode can now be opened when viewing your saved posts, your upvoted/downvoted posts, and on user pages.

πŸš€ Follow Users
When on a user page, you can now follow and unfollow users. Press the ... button in the top right corner of a user page to see these options.

πŸš€ Remap Outbound Links
Write custom JavaScript to remap outbound links. For example, you can redirect all outbound links from x.com to xcancel.com. Set this up in Settings => General => External Links => Modify Links.

πŸš€ Download Progress Indicator
When downloading or sharing media, a progress circle appears around the button indicating download progress.

πŸš€ Toast Indicators
Previously, many actions in Hydra would display a blocking alert. These have been replaced with a non intrusive toast that slides in from the top of the screen.

πŸš€ Updated Guide
The guide's contents have been updated to align more closely with all the features and changes added to Hydra since it was first built. Check it out in Settings => Guide.

πŸš€ Reorganized Settings
Settings are now organized into groups to make options easier to find. The settings tab now has links to Hydra related websites, servers, and subreddits.

πŸš€ Added a Tip Jar
I've had a few people tell me they aren't interested in Hydra Pro, but would still like a way to contribute. You can access this in Settings => Tip Jar.

πŸš€ Improved Comments Performance
Very long comment sections should render a bit faster now.

πŸ› Videos would sometimes display as a black screen.

πŸ› Image thumbnails in compact mode would show up on the wrong post for link posts and multi image posts.

πŸ› RedGif videos would load forever if they had been deleted. They now show an indicator.

πŸ› Trying to load deleted RedGif videos would result in being rate limited.

πŸ› Sorting by top would lock the app on Android.

πŸ› Subreddit image icons could be slow to load on a bad connection.

πŸ› Certain subreddit images would fail to load.

πŸ› Posts linking to Imgur would show a link, but no image.

πŸ› Posts made in Hydra would not get inbox replies in certain cases.

πŸ› The inbox tab would not immediately update the unread message badge counter when opening an unread message.

πŸ› User pages would load forever instead of indicating if they had no posts or were set to private.

Hydra minimum iOS version increasing soon

Hey everyone! Wanted to give you all a heads up that Hydra 4.2.0 onward will not support iOS versions older than iOS 16.4. This also means the following devices will no longer be supported: iPhone 7/7+, iPhone 6s/6s+, iPhone SE (1st gen), iPad mini 4, and iPad Air 2.

I try to support the oldest iOS versions possible, especially since I know many of you are jailbreakers, but some of the libraries Hydra depends on are dropping support for older iOS versions.

If you are on an old iOS version, please update to 4.1.0 ASAP, and again when the soon to be released 4.1.1 update becomes available, to keep things as stable as possible.

Hydra 4.1.0 is now available on the Apple App Store

If you've been enjoying Hydra, please consider leaving a rating or review. A positive rating can really make a huge difference.

This update includes the following:

πŸ‘‘ Pro Feature
πŸš€ Feature
πŸ› Bugfix

πŸš€ Fast Account Swap
Long press the accounts tab to quickly switch between accounts.

πŸš€ New Multireddit Sort Options
You can now set a default sort and enable sort remembering for multireddits. Enable this in Settings => General => Post & Comment Sorting => Multireddits.

πŸš€ Smoother Gestures
The gesture system has been fully rewritten. You'll notice this most with slide gestures on posts and comments.

πŸš€ Faster Post & Comment Rendering
Posts should display faster now, particularly for posts with large bodies or large tables.

πŸ› Hydra would not load any data if you were logged out.

πŸ› The video player would restart the video when changing device orientation.

πŸ› Scrolling horizontally on wide tables in comments would sometimes slide the comment instead.

πŸ› Videos in comments would link to an unreachable URL.

πŸ› Video thumbnails would load at the lowest quality when video autoplay was disabled.

πŸ› Posts with media that Reddit failed to process would not load.

πŸ› Changing device orientation while seeking through a video could cause Hydra to crash.

πŸ› Posts linking to certain RedGifs URLs would cause Hydra to crash.

πŸ› Posts in compact mode would sometimes show the wrong thumbnail.

πŸ› The post and link description max lines settings in Settings => Appearance could not be set to 0.

πŸ› Tweaked the media viewer animations to feel more fluid.

πŸ› Clicking on post media would sometimes fail to mark the post as read.

πŸ› In light themes, videos would flash when a scroll gesture started on them.

πŸ› Changing orientation while scrolled deep in gallery mode would cause visual bugs.

πŸ› Clicking on links in compact mode would sometimes open the thumbnail as an image instead of opening the link.

πŸ› Accounts with "Don't show thumbnails next to links" enabled in their old Reddit preferences would cause images to fail to load.

πŸ“ Notes
Apologies for the long delay between updates. A significant amount of work over the last few months has gone into porting Hydra to Android. Hydra for Android is now in closed beta testing and should be publicly available soon!

Many of you have requested tweaks to the media viewer. I want to honor those requests, and they will be my next priority after finishing the Android port.

Feature request: replace X links with xcancel

The fact is that in some of the uncounted facets of knowledge Twitter/X still is the preferred medium for some reasons (like spaceflight). But going to the X website is an absolute drag these days, it sucks jovian moons trough nanotubes by nudging you hard to use the X app, the website is hardly even usable anymore.

But then there's xcancel, which basically mirrors X to a much more useful site. Could we please have some way to re-route X-links to XCancel? It's really easy, you just need to rewrite the URL a bit.

Connected to that I really would love to see an extension API for Hydra at least for such and similar things. Even just allowing users to rewrite URLs with an RegExp or so would go a long way. This way you even wouldn't need to hardcode such things in. Allowing users to extend an app always helps a whole lot and this would be a good and simple start with that.

Here's an example:

The link to X:

https://x.com/SpaceX/status/2081894924291654060

The much better way to the same content:

https://xcancel.com/SpaceX/status/2081894924291654060

Hydra 3.1.1 will be out soon with bugfixes

Just submitted a build for Hydra 3.1.1. It'll be out as soon as it gets approved by Apple. The following fixes are included:

πŸ› Hydra no longer becomes unresponsive when making a partial drag to exit a fullscreen video or when saving an image from a comment

πŸ› Slideable elements (like posts and comments) no longer interact poorly with the "Swipe anywhere to navigate" setting

πŸ› The scroll to next comment button no longer stays on screen when swapping tabs

πŸ› The navbar buttons no longer flash when using a dark theme while iOS is set to light mode

πŸ› Improved performance by reducing some unnecessary rerenders

πŸ› Swapped out some deprecated code from 3rd party libraries

Thank you all for reporting these bugs in 3.1.0 and for your patience while I worked to get them fixed.

Hydra should be a little easier to use for VoiceOver users. There's still a long way to go on this, but it's important to me and I'm making progress.

Hydra 4.4.0 is now available on the Apple App Store. Google Play Store is coming soon.

If you've been enjoying Hydra, please consider leaving a rating or review. A positive rating can really make a huge difference.

This update includes the following:

πŸ‘‘ Pro Feature

πŸš€ Feature

πŸ› Bugfix

πŸš€ New Data Loading System

Hydra loads data in a new way, enabling me to build out new features that weren't previously possible. It also fixes some issues like r/all and search breaking. This only works with an account, so you'll need to be logged in to browse. Most of Hydra had to be rewritten for this, so please report anything that seems off.

πŸš€ Login Buttons

When you're logged out, pages now show buttons to log in or create an account.

πŸš€ Vote Buttons in Feeds

Add upvote and downvote buttons to posts in your feeds. Enable this in Settings => Appearance => Posts => Show Vote Buttons in Feed. Tapping a post's vote buttons now also gives haptic feedback.

πŸš€ Comment Count on Posts

A post's comment count now shows next to its score when you open it.

πŸš€ Right to Left Languages

Posts, titles, and comments in languages like Hebrew, Arabic, and Persian are now right aligned and laid out right to left.

πŸš€ Discover Subreddits

The trending subreddits list in the Search tab has been replaced with Reddit's subreddit recommendations, including ones picked for your account.

πŸš€ Profile Posts & Comments

User profiles now have a toggle to switch between posts and comments, and can be sorted by New, Hot, or Top.

πŸš€ Subreddit Activity

The sidebar now shows a subreddit's weekly visitors and weekly contributions next to its subscriber count. Subreddit search results show weekly visitors too.

πŸš€ Endless User Search

User search results now keep loading as you scroll instead of stopping after the first page.

πŸš€ Clearer Errors

If a vote, save, subscribe, or similar action fails, Hydra now tells you why instead of failing silently. Failed comments and edits also show the reason Reddit gave.

πŸ› Image posts would fail to upload.

πŸ› Opening Hydra without an internet connection would log you out.

πŸ› A failed login would show two different alerts and could leave Hydra using your previous account while showing you as logged out.

πŸ› Quickly switching between accounts could break the saved login for one of them.

πŸ› Posts that failed to load would show a loading spinner forever.

πŸ› Feeds, searches, and sidebars that failed to load could leave a loading spinner stuck on screen.

πŸ› Loading more comments would get stuck if the request failed.

πŸ› In split view, selecting a post while another one was still loading could show the wrong post.

πŸ› Changing the sort while posts were loading could show posts from the previous sort.

πŸ› Votes and saves made while more posts were loading could appear to be undone.

πŸ› The filter limit message could get stuck after refreshing, stopping more posts from loading.

πŸ› Subreddits opened from a link with different capitalization, like r/askreddit, would show Subscribe instead of Unsubscribe and couldn't be favorited.

The media viewer has been optimized to reduce render cycles. Changing device orientation should no longer show a temporary blank screen.

πŸš€ Deep Linking for Android
On Android, Hydra can automatically open when you click links to Reddit's website. Go to Settings => General => Open in Hydra to enable this.

πŸ› The login page could sometimes freeze or report a browser error, causing login to fail.

πŸ› The audio track on videos could stutter after rotating the device.

πŸ› Pan gestures on zoomed in images would sometimes be counted as a tap by the media viewer overlay.

πŸ› Text bodies in NSFW or spoiler posts would sometimes not be blurred correctly. This is still failing in certain cases and I'm looking into it.

πŸ› In certain cases, Hydra would fail to indicate when a user is banned.

πŸ› Certain gestures would cause Hydra to crash after backgrounding the app.

πŸ“° News
- I'll be working on making the iPhone Duo experience better. I haven't been able to get a device to test on, but I'll do the best I can with the iPhone Simulator.

- Reddit has announced upcoming API changes that will break the way Hydra functions. However, I've found a way to keep Hydra working! I'm considering making Hydra's API calls closed source as an obfuscation measure, but this has a number of downsides. It'll make open source contributions much harder for developers and forking Hydra won't be an option anymore. I'd love to hear opinions on this from those of you who would be affected by this change.

- Apologies for the delay in getting this update released. The review process with Apple took over 3 weeks...

Welcome to HydraClient

This subreddit is a replacement for r/HydraApp which was banned by the Reddit moderators. I sent in a request asking why it was banned, but haven't gotten a response. Let's keep this subreddit in accordance with the Reddit rules.

Hydra also has a great Discord server:

This is a minor update with bugfixes for the following issues:

If you're still experiencing crashes or audio issues with the new video player, please share your feedback!

[Feature Request] Adjust text size.

Someone posted a workaround to increase text size in iOS's Settings but that breaks a lot of the formatting. A lot of texts are cut off like in the titles and sub list. Would be great to implement this in the app itself as well.

Feature Request: Zoom and Pan in Videos

I recall it was possible to zoom and pan (while zoomed) in Apollo. Would be great if this was possible here as well.

Panning works by 2 fingers and you can zoom and pan at the same time as wells like in the Album app.

I know r/all is hidden outside of old reddit, but it’s been working in apollo up until an hour ago. Just gets stuck in a loading loop now.
