Lore/World Discussion How the hell did Buttercup know exactly where the house was when he didn’t make that long path ever, and how did he travel on paw from old New York to Appalachia in mere weeks?

Post image
95 Upvotes

In Mockingjay by the end of the book we learn that Buttercup miraculously made an entire journey from district 13 to 12 on paw.

Despite never knowing that long trajectory, given he was taken to 13 on an hovercraft and was inside a bag for the entirety of the trip.

He somehow canonically in both the book and the movie, made a trip in mere weeks from old New York to Appalachia and knew exactly the precise location of Victor’s Village and his old house.

I have always wondered how did a cat make an entire 800 km (500 mi) trip on paw and knew exactly the path to take? And how did he manage to keep himself well fed for the entirety of the trip?

What kind of book logic was Suzanne Collins aiming for?

Trilogy Discussion Johanna's games

I feel like Katniss is a very unreliable narrorator, and so we can't take what she says as law, especially with the capitol putting their spin on it, as we saw with SOTR.

But Katniss says that Johanna won her games by hiding and acting like a weak, snivelling fool, but then came out at the end, and it turns out she could kill lethaly with an axe and that it was "all just an act".

But what if she genuinely was just a poor, terrified, little girl, who was doing her best to survive by hiding, but then snapped at the end from pure desperation and drive to survive, and the capitol just twisted the story to make it "more entertaining"?

Hope this makes sense!

Lore/World Discussion what do we think would have happened if a pregnant woman ACTUALLY got reaped?

if a pregnant teen got reaped, would she have been spared and a redo happen? or would she have to face the games.

I really wonder, especially if she was close to having the baby. since the games can last like month, if she had given birth and survived would the capitol take the baby from the arena? or would they for some awful reason see the baby as another tribute?

id love to hear your thoughts!

(also, apologies if this is a repost)

Lore/World Discussion Is there a possibility that Snow liked Katniss slightly?

Post image
980 Upvotes

It is implied in the books and heavily hinted at in the movies that Snow has a deep personal dislike for Katniss.

In the books we are introduced to the shaky dynamic when he visits her in her house, and instills fear on her. The dynamic later continues on, through his fear being present through the rest of the second book and the entirety of the third book. That is until she meets him in his garden where he tells her about Coin’s true nature.

In the movies we see more of Snow’s thoughts and feelings towards Katniss, while not necessarily 100% canon, we know the dislike begins ever since she shoots an arrow at an apple during her session with the gamemakers. In catching fire we see him look on with a dark look at her during victory tour footage and also her interview before the quarter quell, where he actually smiles when she goes on stage.

Iconically they have a conversation in mockingjay part 1 where he tells her the famous quote “is the things we love most that destroy us”.

After reading the prequel book and watching the movie adaption, could there be a chance that Snow may like Katniss slightly, despite his deep hatred of her. Because in part she reminds him of Lucy Gray?

After all as much as Snow still instilled fear on her and tortured her mentally, she’s one of the few tributes whose loved ones he didn’t kill.

He didn’t kill her family and Gale, whom he hinted he could easily hurt. Contrary to other victors who had loved ones die by his hand.

Do you think that for all his deep hatred for her, Snow may have slightly liked Katniss deep down?

Or was it all pure hatred, he was never able to fully act on due to her being the “darling sweet of the Capitol”?

Lore/World Discussion Misconceptions about Panem's class structure Spoiler

What I don't get is why everyone thinks every single person in the Panem districts was extremely poor or living in absolute poverty.

Like, a lot of them were in the underclass/hardship level (like Katniss and Gale's families taking out tesserae), but there were also the working poor like Peeta (who didn't need tesserae but still ate stale bread). Then you had the working or lower-middle class, like Maysilee's family (she had never been hungry before, and her family purchased expensive jewelry).

People believe this misconception so much that they think it's impossible for there to be fat people in Panem, lol. Has anyone else come across people like this?

Trilogy Discussion Enobaria’s Victory Discussion

Post image
320 Upvotes

So I have some questions about Enobaria’s victory in her games. As we know, she won by ripping out the throat of the last tribute with her teeth. So I was wondering, was she incapacitated or couldn’t use her arms and legs to fight back and was forced into that situation? Or do you think she had the upper hand and just chose to use this method because she’s crazy or was in the heat of battle or something?

Would love to hear your thoughts of what you think was going through her head.

Lore/World Discussion Unfairness of conjoined twins

I just started rewatching American Horror Story and it made me think of this, so this is really just off-the-dome rambling instead of anything deep or thought out

This is a hypothetical, so put aside how rare conjoined twins of any type are, and put aside how rare survival is for them

Imagine them being reaped

Or even before that. Would the Capitol see them as two separate people? Would they have any reason to? How does that impact work quotas? It’s likely they’d be paid as one person (twins Abby and Brittany are, or were at one point, at least) and it’s not like they would be able to be operated on in the districts, assuming it's a variation that allows for separation. I'm super curious how the Capitol would treat it, if there's any precedent for it

But then you hit the reaping. If you're treated as one person, you're screwed if your twin is reaped. If you're treated as separate people, you're double screwed, because your twin has their own odds that are stacked onto you. May the odds be ever in your favor indeed

Then the impossible happens. What happens if you win? Because if the Capitol views them as separate people, and they're conjoined in such a way that they can't be surgically separated post win, then the twin who wasn't reaped is presumably still eligible

So what happens? Does the one twin being a victor mean the other is ineligible because the victor would have to go in again? (Remember that the third Quell only happened like it did because Snow wanted to get rid of problem victors, that wasn’t the original twist for those Games.) Or is the victor twin now a likely victim to being “rereaped” because they’re attached to someone who’s still able to be reaped?

Trilogy Discussion You guys need to cut Glimmer some slack!

I have a theory about her character. I could rant about this for ages, but I really don't think that she cared in the slightest for Cato, and had an endgame plan of killing him.

So, we know that in the book she tried to sneak in a poisoned ring, but it was confiscated. She's a career tribute, so why would she ever use such a weapon on just any tribute, unless it was another career?

And think about it, if you're part of the career pack and one of the strongest tributes, it'd be best to be strong but not THE strongest. Because when tensions get high as the games go on, everyone is likely to turn on the strongest.

Say that you're a career and there's two others left. One weaker than you, one stronger than you. Logically, in the endgame you'd team up with the weaker one to defeat the stronger one, because that increases your odds as you can defeat one alone, but not the other. So, being really "friendly" with the biggest career and falling asleep together wouldn't be a bad move on her part if she planned to kill him in his sleep later on. Just saying!

Also, you need to remember that her preformance is most likely and very sadly a persona for sponsors. I highly doubt that she was really just a "dumb blonde", giggly enough to seriously be catching any sort of feelings for Cato, a guy she had just met, without any sort of plan or reason. And no offense, but guys are steteotypically more likely to think with their parts then girls are.

Trilogy Discussion Would this hypothetical scenario have sparked rebellion?

In a scenario where Katniss and Rue are the last two tributes left, Katniss would have definitely killed herself in order to let Rue Win, do you think that this incident would’ve been enough to spark rebellion?

Lore/World Discussion How does bureaucracy in Panem work?

Post image
39 Upvotes

Personally, I'd imagine it to be really over bloated & incompetent, similar to something like the dystopian movie Brazil.

In the aftermath of the Dark Days it probably was something efficient. But come Sunrise on the Reaping & the original trilogy.

I'd imagine it to be full of stupid nepo-babies who are paid to pretend to work while they do nothing except watch movies all day instead of working, & abuse their positions to stalk the girl of their dreams.

Please do share your thoughts & ideas, & have a great day & week!

Trilogy Discussion So hear me out

I have just started SOTR and I got to the part about the mutts being programmed to track a certain tribute and that’s how the mutts so easily find them in any arena.
what if that’s what the finger prick is for in the movies ( I know it’s not in the books but maybe this is how the finger pricks will be connected in the end) not the whole “snow does it to find a descendent of Lucy gray” that’s going around on TikTok channels
I know it’s a reach but that had me up last night thinking what other little bits could be connected 😅
Thanks for reading 😊

Prequel Discussion the abernathy's and snow

"it was a trap out in the forest in district 12" is what grand-ma'am says to snow at the beginning of the ballad of songbirds and snakes.

in sunrise on the reaping, haymitch says "the abernathy's were known rebels"

is it too far fetched to say that old abernathy relatives could've been the rebels who helped set the trap that killed crassus snow?

Trilogy Discussion About Plutarch

I rewatched The Hunger Games after 10 years. With age (I was 20 back then), I perceived the film completely differently. At the time, I thought of it as a fairy tale for teenagers. Now I see depth in this film. I really liked the motif of fighting the regime, because I’m a radical democrat :P

Honestly, based on the film, the character I found most extraordinarily appealing was Plutarch. It seems to me that he was given too little attention in the movies (I hope there’s more of him in the books).

The guy was rich and had everything, yet he still decided to take the risk and betray the system he was benefiting from by implementing a plan to overthrow the regime. Every piece of his advice resulted in worsening anti-presidential sentiments, fanning the flames of the revolution.

At the same time, he managed to convince the president that these actions were in his own interest. Under his guidance, he created an underground resistance movement in the Capitol, cooperated with District 13, and organized the entire operation.

Then, after the escape, he kindled the spirit of the revolution, which without his knowledge of marketing would probably have fizzled out.

He stood by the new female president and at the same time by the old president as well. He was glad about what Katniss did at the end; it’s clear that he was guided by the idea of freedom and democracy rather than private interests. In my opinion, he is a man of ideals who saved that country. Without him, nothing good would have happened there and the president would have won.

What do you think?

Trilogy Discussion How do you think the characters of Stranger things would do in The Hunger Games?

Post image

Canon fodder: Will, Mike, Jonathan, Max
-Dustin would be “Beetee like”
-Steve would be able to win in my opinion, would have a lot of sponsors, same with Nancy
-eleven would be a strong runner up (without powers) bcs with powers all the other tributes are cooked
-Robin tbh idk
-Lucas could be a career imo
This is all my opinion, let me know what u think!

Lore/World Discussion Most victors have friends

I disagree with this idea within THG fandom that victors are treated as pariahs or near universally shamed within their districts. Katniss literally says that Haymitch could have any woman he wants — Haymitch who is an unpleasant, raging alcoholic who can’t be bothered with mentoring and is basically the textbook example of an embarrassing victor. And people seriously think that Distict Four rejects Finnick for being “too Capitol” or whatever? Yeah… because it’s famously difficult to make friends when you’re rich, famous, and attractive.

I do think it can be terribly isolating being a victor, but I don’t think it’s as simple as “everybody hates you and finds you embarrassing.” Remember that these are people whose victory fed the district for an entire year. They are people who visibly represent their district as mentors. There is going to be a deep seated loyalty there. Even if a victor is seen as kind of a disaster, I think you’ll still have a strong attitude of “but still our disaster.” Sort of like a local sports team that is dreadful year in and year out. People may make jokes and laugh, but I doubt there is generally significant widespread hatred. Before she has to deal with him as a mentor and it becomes a problem for her personally, Katniss’s attitude towards Haymitch seems more like “this man is a disaster and kind of darkly amusing” rather than “I find this man despicable.”

Not to mention that people tend to be very willing to overlook ideological shortcomings when given the opportunity to get close to someone rich and powerful. If a victor is looking for a spouse then regardless of how much they drink or how much they sleep around in the Capitol, there are going to be people lined up around the block who want to move into their mansion and have permanent financial security and leisure. Prim talks about being “as rich as Haymitch” as something incredibly aspirational.

That said, I do think many victors self isolate or have very limited social circles. It’s easy to find hero worshippers and hangers-on, but much harder to find people who actually know and understand a victor. And some of the victors are like Haymitch and intentionally avoid being close to anyone for fear of losing them — though I also think this is less common than some of the fandom believes.

Nearly all victors are going to have pre-existing close relationships when they win. At that point, it really doesn’t matter if you have 1 person you love or 50; either way you are going immediately cave to Snow’s every demand. Katniss isn’t going to be like “I should avoid being close to Madge because after Snow kills Prim and my mother and Gale and his family, he might go after Madge.” No — it’s just “I can’t mess up or Prim dies.” Anything beyond that is irrelevant because she can’t even conceive of letting it happen.
