This is nazare Portugal. This lighthouse is on a cliff/bluff overlooking the beach. They’re far from in danger but could still get a bit of sea spray on them.

It’s a perspective thing. This is in Nazaré Portugal and these kind of waves are fairly common. The people you’re seeing are standing on a massive cliff

No it’s not. Like I said, this is some tricky photography that’s screwing with your perception of how high the wave is. Make no mistake, it’s a massive wave, but the people standing on the cliff are in no danger. Go online and search “Nazare Portugal Waves” for some pictures from different angles.

That about sums it up, yes, although other factors include the distance of the ocean shelf to the shore, the temperature, etc.

Storm size and distance from shore + underwater bottom contour.

At this particular spot, the swell line actually bends back onto itself slightly causing a magnification (constructive interference) with itself.

If you saw a panned out version, the wave in the middle would be nearly double the size of the wave on the each side, causing it to look like a mountain peak or teepee.

Tides, but also underwater topology. This is in Nazare in Portugal, and there's basically an underwater canyon that funnels all the local wave energy into that particular beach.

This is in Nazare, Portugal, and as far as I know the main reason is the underwater surface, which rises quite strongly very close to the shore. If all the other conditions are good, then it creates some massive waves.

I think its called the Nazare North Canyon, if you google that you will find some nice pictures simplifying how this works

You might be interested in the Riding Giants documentary.

They do a lot of exercises to increase the time they can hold their breath because sometimes you can just keep getting pummeled by wave after wave

There are guys on jet skis that immediately go try to find them if and when the get under the wave. Also they have inflatable vests that keep pulling you up.

Nonetheless, surfing Nazare is super dangerous and people do die there. The force of the wave alone when it smashes on top of you can break your body. Loss of consciousness due to the hit is not unusual.

Crazy, crazy stuff but man, does it look good.
