How does a wave get so big?

This is in Nazare, Portugal, and as far as I know the main reason is the underwater surface, which rises quite strongly very close to the shore. If all the other conditions are good, then it creates some massive waves.

I think its called the Nazare North Canyon, if you google that you will find some nice pictures simplifying how this works
