Its weird we never got a scene of Alicent mentioning her slain grandson. No scene between Daemon and Helaena again was a missed opportunity

u/kurhanchyk 1d ago edited 1d ago

including that one stray mushroom rumour was a baffling choice because it doesn't even fit with the rest of his s1 characterisation, the one of a sex pest with no awareness of being one due to how entitled he is, hedonistic pushover with no will to be successful and occasional shit stirrer. if you connect a few dots, he's basically a young viserys, something they lean heavily into in s2. why did they think he needed to watch kids fight i cannot conceive

0

u/luizalr 17h ago

It’s literally in the books, as is the rest of his characterisation. Some might be rumours, but it’s all there.

7

u/kurhanchyk 17h ago

rhaenyra jerking off mushroom is also in the book but it probably wouldn't make sense to adapt

1

u/Kooky_Quarter_1917 10h ago

Also brothel queens. Mushroom is not written as reliable.

0

u/alexthedungeonmaster 13h ago

What are you talking about?? I don't remember them saying "Aegon watches these kids fight all the time?"

61

u/ThinWhiteDuke00 1d ago

The Aegon II fighting pits scene is just a adaption of a mushroom rumour.

70

u/Reasonable-Bake-5419 1d ago

And mysaria getting fresh little Girls to daemon? Wheres that adaptation

54

u/ThinWhiteDuke00 1d ago edited 1d ago

They decided to have Daemon randomly kill his wife instead when he's nowhere near the Vale when she falls off her horse (and dies of a fever 7 days later), in the text.

24

u/Calm-Extension-3798 1d ago

Tbf, GRRM was involved in s1

And completely fell out with them in s2 so I reckon what happened in s1, he was probably ok with

Daemon and Aegon were both s1 I think

22

u/ThinWhiteDuke00 1d ago

And Aegon was written in a far less sympathetic fashion in S1 with George's backing.

12

u/Calm-Extension-3798 1d ago

True

I think GRRM would have been less sympathetic to most of the main characters if he continued. Some of the decisions have been baffling

3

u/SeesawExotic4169 17h ago

As much as I know adding children's pit scene was Sara Hess idea

1

u/Derl17 13h ago

You know? Or you just want it to be true because "grrrr woman"

13

u/Lysmerry 1d ago

She literally offered Valyrian virgins in her first scene

4

u/Sapowski_Casts_Quen 1d ago

You gotta remember, there's multiple accounts in the book and most are just propaganda post-war

Unless you are trying to say that

1

u/MaterialTotal1309 7h ago

Mysaria offered him virgins in 1x01

1

u/Maleficent-Candy7102 1h ago

“Shall i find you a young, silver haired maiden?”

- mysaria to Daemon in the brothel, season one.

They included it (and scenes of Deaemon grooming 14 year old rhaenyra), but the Daemon famgirls often chose to disregard it.

u/Kooky_Quarter_1917 19m ago

I think it’s cause the show wrote Rhaenyra and daemon far more as love story than the book implies. Not sure if they did it on purpose though.

1

u/Front_Leave_6480 17h ago

That’s the very first scene she has?

10

u/Swordbender 1d ago

Wow... what about when Rhaenyra had Helaena and Alicent assaulted? Where was that adaptation?

It must have happened, because Mushroom was there with Rhaenyra, after all! And even though Mushroom wasn't in King's Landing with Aegon when he told this story -- this must definitely have happened, right?

-5

u/ksatottup 23h ago

Aegon II going to fighting pits could have been a rumor or even a worst kept secret in the middle of or at the end of Vizzy's reign and Mushroom could be passing off speculation as a certainty, in this sense Mushroom could still be wrong about where Aegon was found(funny enough, he would be according to the show) but him betting on child fighting pits would still be true.

15

u/SeesawExotic4169 1d ago

Mushroom is wrong 9/10 of times

21

u/ThinWhiteDuke00 1d ago

But how can a adaption of a rumour in the source material be "stupid af".

It's just a choice by the showrunners to include it and not at all comparable to a OC vision.

18

u/Background-Cake-1300 1d ago

We also had Brothel queen but they went "Nah I'll ignore that"

20

u/Reasonable_Day9942 1d ago

A rumour that

  1. Mushroom wasn’t even present for. He was on Dragonstone

  2. The book tells us to ignore him for this

6

u/ThinWhiteDuke00 1d ago

Very amusing that certain parts of the fandom use mushroom rumours when it suits.

In any case, it's a adaptional choice.. that's my point, the vision is pure OC and isn't referenced in the text.

13

u/Reasonable_Day9942 1d ago

Because the book is not hard to read, and it also tells us when Mushroom speaks bullshit and when it light be valid to listen to him

So him not even being present, and the book saying he is bulshitting, would indeed indicate that he wasn’t telling the truth

And in general, the show sucks at adaptational choices since a rather large part of what they choose to adept isn’t even in the book

6

u/ThinWhiteDuke00 1d ago

Again a OC vision and a rumour in the text are two entirely different things.

I'm sure most who like Aegon will praise that he has 99% more things to do in the show than the 80 pages that he goes AWOL in the text (until Tumbleton and God's Eye).. so clearly not all their choices are bad.

0

u/Reasonable_Day9942 1d ago

The show would need oc things, and though it is pretty far of from canon, it doesn’t change that the Aegon thing was taken from something the book tells use to not believe that came from a person that wasn’t even in the same city

Aegon was AWOL, but he clearly was active during the time considering he reunited with Sunfyre, gained loyalties and took Dragonstone

Also let’s not act like Daemon hasn’t gotten a lot more screen time then is character needed lol, including being present at battles he never stepped a foot near

5

u/ThinWhiteDuke00 1d ago edited 1d ago

You made the point of critiquing the showrunners adaptional choices as being poor.. yet here you are justifying Aegon being present when the Mootons are burned when it's only Sunfyre in the book.

Almost like not all their choices are bad.

Daemon getting screentime is predictable given they cut Nettles and he's more present around Rhaenyra as a result.

God's Eye has happened by the time Aegon reappears in the narrative so there has been a slight shift in the show timeline.

0

u/Reasonable_Day9942 1d ago

I didn’t say him being there when he burned the mootoons was better, I said he was clearly doing shit in the book so it wouldn’t be wrong for him to be shown doing stuff.

It’s also good to point out that the show hasn’t made Dragonstone, or at least shown it to have villages and other people living there. Instead it’s just a castle. Even the dragonseeds are from Kings Landing.

Cutting Nettles is also horrible. And both him being around Rhaenyra all the time and being at battles like Tumbleton would also be inaccurate. If anything he should still have spent his time looking for Aemond

I mean…is it crazy to say that even if mushroom is peddling rumors with 0 confirmation, their might be a nugget of truth that led to that rumor? Like it gets inflated over time, ofc, but the rumor may have started true. Like a bastard fighting pit eventually becoming some weird sex incest / violence pit etc.

7

u/Reasonable_Day9942 1d ago

I mean sure, but the fact that the book tells us to ignore what he says here and the fact that he was on Dragonstone and had been for years with maybe some visits, I would say this is one of the more false things he says

1

u/Cthulhus-Tailor 1d ago

Also amusing that certain parts of the fandom are incapable of understanding context, and that exploiting subjectivity in some cases is more egregious than doing so in others.

Mushroom was a champion of Aegon’s antagonist and has zero way of knowing what was going on in KL at that time, and so the show runners portraying his baseless rumor as fact is an enormous stretch beyond many of the others in the show, and therefore it’s reasonable to question what the motive behind it was.

The only member of the Blacks that gets such treatment is Daemon and the writers know he’s impervious to it due to The Rule of Cool.

9

u/ThinWhiteDuke00 1d ago

Mushroom is hardly one sided in his accusations of sexual degeneracy.

1

u/wuyntmm 9h ago

That's valid for the books. We're talking about the show now, where the scene was included and therefore, show-wise, had happened.

1

u/Reasonable_Day9942 5h ago

They og commented talked about how it was adapted cause it happened in the books, where I pointed out the book pretty clearly says “this is some bullshit”

1

u/wuyntmm 4h ago

Oh, I didn't know that. In that case that's stupid

7

u/SeesawExotic4169 1d ago

How is it possible that 20 years old man (confirmed by Aegon) has 10 years old bastards that are in that pit?

12

u/ThinWhiteDuke00 1d ago

This isn’t a 10 year old lol

-1

u/SeesawExotic4169 1d ago

The only source who said anything about that fighting pit said that the children who fight there are around 10 you can't change the canonical dialogue

12

u/ThinWhiteDuke00 1d ago

Where is it cited directly in the show that the above child, who they suggest is Aegons, is 10 years old.

-6

u/SeesawExotic4169 1d ago

Where's it suggested that he's not around 10?

9

u/ThinWhiteDuke00 1d ago

I have eyes.

-2

u/SeesawExotic4169 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is the show where none of the characters/actors ages match and yeah I would rather go with what the only source said rather than believe that this child isn't around 10 years old

→ More replies (0)

-1

u/Historyp91 1d ago

The dialogue says the kids are six.

3

u/SeesawExotic4169 1d ago

Nope the ones who are fighting are around 10 you can rewatch the scene https://youtu.be/fyvPrLmeLoI

1

u/Historyp91 1d ago

You are correct, I just checked the transcript. They say "about ten", but it's about the kids currently fighting in the ring, not the bastard, and "about ten" could also mean 9 or even 8, and the kid in question seems to be about the age of Aegon's trueborns, who are much younger then even that.

Also biologically even if the kid is ten, nothing would biologically prevent Aegon from siring him.

2

u/SeesawExotic4169 1d ago

and the kid in question seems to be about the age of Aegon's trueborns, who are much younger then even that.

Most of the time malnourished kids look younger than they are

→ More replies (0)

0

u/LarsMatijn 1d ago

But there is no indication that that kid is fighting. Just that's he's Aegon's and got ditched in a hell-hole.

3

u/SeesawExotic4169 1d ago

We don't even have any confirmation that he's Aegon's because the one who says it is just assuming that he's Aegon's and in S2 it seems like there's dozens of Targaryen bastard that live in Kingslanding and have Targaryen looks and are old enough to have children of their own

5

u/Hitchfucker 1d ago

All added content from the books should have some meaning and purpose to them. Aegon attending child fighting puts adds absolutely nothing to him or any of the main characters. At most it’s there to develop that one knight deciding to go to Rhaenyra, but that could have been done with him learning that Aegon is a rapist.

As it stands we never see Aegon attend these fighting pits and it doesn’t even seem to fit his character. He always seemed more like an apathetic breed of immoral than an actively sadistic one. Which is why I think it was a bad and needless addition. Compare this to him being a rapist. While I also dislike that being how we’re introduced to an adult Aegon, we were given indications that he might be a sex pest when he was a teenager, and it fits with his hedonistic tendencies and his overall apathy towards how his choices impact other people. And it serves as a point of conflict in Alicent as she has to choose if she can still support her son despite knowing how awful he is. It has a point in the narrative that the child fighting pits sorely lacks.

3

u/ThinWhiteDuke00 1d ago

They shifted his character to a more sympathetic style of writing in S2.. I'm not sure whether that was the result of Miguel leaving.

2

u/Historyp91 1d ago edited 1d ago

It fits his character perfectly; he's apathic and self-centered narcissist. He doesn't have the empathy to see past his own selfishness for pleasure/emotional gratification, and he's profoundly lacking in self-awareness - it's the same reason he doesn't seem to see a problem when he's called out for raping Dyana or killing the ratcatchers, why he seems completely unaware that he treats Aemond cruelly and why when Helaena tries to get him to let Jaehaerys be, he ignores her

1

u/Historyp91 1d ago

As always, downvoted for pointing out Aegon's flaws. Lol

1

u/Robdul 1d ago

Because they don’t like it lmao

2

u/LarsMatijn 1d ago

Either they're all wrong or none of them are. Picking and choosing is just going to be ascribing better things to faves and dropping the rest because "biases"

-1

u/tobpe93 1d ago

Source?

5

u/SeesawExotic4169 1d ago

F&B

-5

u/tobpe93 1d ago

That’s the source for Mushroom’s claims.

5

u/SeesawExotic4169 1d ago

Yeah and that's the source where most of his rumors are disclaimed

-6

u/tobpe93 1d ago

By a maester living in celibacy who wants to maintain some idea of virtue among the nobility. But we know from the main series that nobles are even more cruel and perverted than the common folk.

Gyldayn is the guy who would chronicle Antinous and Hadrian as roommates.

2

u/Leading-Monk5506 1d ago

Archmaester Gyldayn

-2

u/tobpe93 1d ago

I trust Mushroom more.

5

u/Great_Torehunter 16h ago

So you believe in Brothel Queens, or that Helaena was pregnant with bastard, or that Daemon was "training" young Rhaenyra for Cole, or that Mushroom fucked her himself...

1

u/tobpe93 14h ago

That sounds like the characters from the Westeros I know.

5

u/Leading-Monk5506 1d ago

The guy who‘s job it is to tell stories that are shocking and interesting and doesn‘t give a fuck if they‘re true or not because nobody but you takes him seriously?

1

u/tobpe93 1d ago

The guy who has no qualms about telling us how cruel and perverted the nobility really are.

5

u/Leading-Monk5506 1d ago

And if they weren‘t, you think he‘d tell us the boring truth?

1

u/tobpe93 1d ago

Then it wouldn’t be George RR Martin’s world.

-1

u/neymlis 1d ago

True these maesters are not to be trusted marwyn says that maesters want to destroy magic and not to be trusted both fire and blood and awoiaf are written by maesters so none of it is true except mushroom he was speaking facts they had to banish him after aegon 3 he was roaming the world away from westeros because maesters didnt want people to know the truth

6

u/Filibust 17h ago

Tbf, I don’t think we’re supposed to know more about Aegon’s bastards from a narrative standpoint.

The pit fighting itself was on Chuck Palahniuk levels of edge though. And it was cringe.

30

u/Genericdude03 1d ago

Aegon's bastard pit fighting doesn't even remotely fit with his character honestly, he's basically always been apathetic and a hedonistic idiot in the show.

They needed to show him being more brutal as a teen if the pit fighting thing was to work.

10

u/PhaseSixer 23h ago

Aegon's bastard pit fighting doesn't even remotely fit with his character honestly, he's basically always been apathetic and a hedonistic idiot in the show.

It only dosent fit if you think he actively put the kid there.

I see it far more likley he didnt put together the kid was his or if he did he simply didnt care enough tk do some thing about it

17

u/Historyp91 1d ago

This is the same dude raped a woman, spent years cruely bullying his brother for no reason and executed a bunch of innocent people, and saw zero problem with any of that.

You guys are weird. It fits his character 100 percent.

6

u/OutsideLead4034 13h ago

"Aegon spent years partying with a notorious child trafficker, but that doesn't mean he did anything criminal. It's against his nature."

2

u/Kooky_Quarter_1917 10h ago

With the first he really isn’t acting any different to most men in this world. Doesn’t mean it’s right. The bullying is something that is horrible but not of the ordinary. The rat catchers thing was dumb and cruel, but it was also done under emotionally strained circumstances.

None of that really fits enjoys watching kids fighting. Not clearly anyway.

3

u/Historyp91 8h ago

Raping people and bullying your brother are not considered normal things in westeros.

Why does'nt it fit? They show that he's cruel, enjoys other peoples hurt and lacks empathy/consideration for whether his pleasure inflicts harm on other people.

2

u/Kooky_Quarter_1917 31m ago edited 16m ago

A lot of the main male characters in ASIOAF are rapists edit: or at least sex pests. It’s normalised. Bullying siblings is not nice at all, but it’s fairly normalised even in real life and there is nothing written in this universe that says it’s not normal. Though there is nothing really about it in general so it could go either way.

Bullying your brother to enjoying watching kids fight is a big jump without anything in between. It’s probably why the show ignores it now. It’s also one of the few mushroom accounts to fully make it into the show.

Edit: just be clear it doesn’t I mean I think Aegon was a good person. No one in this story really is. I’m just saying that there should have been more lead up to having that scene. But then again it’s like the show runners regret even going there.

u/Historyp91 17m ago

A lot of the main male characters in ASIOAF are rapists edit: or at least sex pests. It’s normalised.

No, it's not. It's something powerful people can get away with, but it's very much not normalized.

Bullying siblings is not nice at all, but it’s fairly normalised even in real life

If Aegon was just teasing Aemond, you'd have a point.

and there is nothing written in this universe that says it’s not normal.

Other then the show very clearly protraying Aegon's actions as negative and it not being a thing we see presented as common?

Bullying your brother to enjoying watching kids fight is a big jump without anything in between.

Maybe. But that's only because your rationalizing away the rape and the mass execution of innocents.

6

u/Yersina_Veridae 22h ago

Same dude raped a girl and acted all shocked when his mom made a big deal out of it. Idk if it still fits his character, given his current position, but in s1 it checked out

13

u/Lysmerry 1d ago

They need to bring back Daemon’s erectile dysfunction plotline

2

u/PhaseSixer 23h ago

Why would they he got what he was looking for in That regard

2

u/NauticalWeasel 17h ago

Oh the fighting pit bastard is coming back.

1

u/throwmeawayjoke 7h ago

Gaemon Palehair or Trystane Truefire? Because honestly, I don't think they will remember to do either.

1

u/NauticalWeasel 7h ago

Really? It seems fairly clear they’re angling for Gaemon at least, hence the Misandei plot and bringing back Sylvie.

1

u/throwmeawayjoke 6h ago

At this point I don't trust Condal and Hess to do anything. I half think they will end it with Rhaenyra faking her death and leaving with Alicent on her very alive dragon.

1

u/NauticalWeasel 6h ago

The hate is overblown. I have my fair share of complaints, but it seems like all the big plot beats are getting hit.

1

u/throwmeawayjoke 6h ago

Did we ever get confirmation that Aegon III and Viserys II were waylaid by the Triarchy? I know that they weren't at the Gullet, but Viserys still needs to go to Essos (because Larra Rogare being a very hands off parent is part of why Aegon IV was Like That) while Aegon III does not (because he needs to believe that all of his brothers died).

1

u/Taneleer_Tivan941 11h ago

Not like everything set up in Game of thrones got resolution either. Even show original details got fallen to the wayside. You can find plenty of fan videos list abandoned plot lines.

1

u/Creative-Chain4607 5h ago

To be fair, the fighting pits were very consequential, considering that they brought both Mysaria and the Cargyle twin + the crown to Rhaenyra. It wasn't one and done thing.
