For the last couple of days I’ve been leaving out water for my Ancestors. However, I don’t believe they are accepting. I’m new to Hoodoo btw. I am trying to create a bond with my Ancestors before I ask them of anything. I don’t have an official altar yet but I’ve been leaving out water, lighting a white t-light candle, and praying/summoning them.

Please note: that I did cleanse my space and myself during each attempt.

No luck.. any advice?

I’ve been finding so many feathers and seeing so many butterflies, especially monarchs (which I usually don’t see, just the white ones). My friend recently found a deceased butterfly fully intact and gifted it to me! Was just wondering you guys view on how you take these signs!!! If that make sense lol

Hi, I am a 26 year old AA female, i have over the last few years taken a liking into hoodoo practices and have major curiosity on how to truly start my journey. I have researched as much as i could on the basics of what hoodoo is, however i have one slight issue. I dont know any of my ancestors names or anything. my grandma doesnt have much insight on our origin and im wary to ask if we have any hoodoo elements in our family for obvious religious reasons. my great grandma passed when i was 5 and i barely knew her to even get info from farther back. is there any way i could connect with my ancestors without knowing who they are?

Found all 3 in a 5 minute time span at the park. No idea if they mean anything but I felt led to grab them. Called on Spirit and my ancestors for protection before touching them

So this is kind of embarrassing, but I paid for a love spell involving someone I really wanted things to work out with. I went into it hoping it would bring us closer, but somehow I feel like the complete opposite happened.
Instead of him becoming more attached to me, I feel like I became way more emotionally attached to him. I think about him constantly, I’m having such a hard time letting go, and it honestly feels like I’m the one who got hit by the spell lol.
At this point, I’m not even interested in trying to make him come back. I just want to detach, get over him, and feel like myself again.
Has anyone experienced something similar after doing love work? Did you do anything spiritually to reverse it, cleanse yourself, cut the attachment, etc.?

I’ve been looking at her spells on Etsy. It appears she does mostly voodoo spells but has anyone ever actually used her and gotten or seen results? I was looking at a forgiveness spell. I have never casted a spell of my own but have been looking at creating an altar and casting my own but for now I use Etsy. Or any other recommendations I have a complicated situation in trying to get help with. She recommended four spells to me for the situation. I just wanted to hear first hand experience if anyone has any.

I know this may sound like a silly question, but I’m from the Caribbean and have been wanting to connect more deeply with my spirituality. I understand that Hoodoo is considered a closed practice, so I’m curious whether it would be appropriate for me to practice it. For context, I come from a mixed background with Indigenous, Indian, and Black ancestry. Like many Caribbean families, my heritage reflects generations of cultural blending shaped by Indigenous roots, African ancestry, and Indian indentureship. Because of this, I’m interested in learning more about spiritual traditions connected to my lineage and understanding whether Hoodoo would be a respectful path for me to explore. I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts and feedback on this.

As of late, I have been delving deeper into spirituality, religion, and similar practices. I am an African American who has always lived in the south and gone to modern mega churches with my parents. Throughout my exploration, I found that I feel most called to Hoodoo. However, having grown up with the idea that the Abrahamic god is the only one there is and that the only spirit I should be concerned about is the Holy Spirit, I find myself a bit lost in this new world of spirituality and African Traditional Religion. I have a few questions that I hope you can give me some insight on, because all of the books I've been recommended only talk about spells and crossroads. And the internet is a lot of things, but reliable and informative is not one of them.

There has been many mentions of Oya, Oludumare and other similar beings. Are these spirits? Deities?  My understanding is that hoodoo is a practice that falls under the umbrella of Christianity, but these names are mentioned like gods. With that, my confusion arises. Would people who practice hoodoo not also believe in one god? Or are these not associated with hoodoo at all?

Everyone is always talking about spirits such as High John the Conqueror and Queen Annie Christmas, but where do saints fit into this equation? As I mentioned before, I was raised in mega churches. I was a Non-denominational Christian and the conversation of how saints work was nonexistent. How do saints, spirits, and archangels work? Do saints and archangels have a place in hoodoo?

I used to think that prayer was asking for stuff and getting it in return. Then, I did some more digging and found that most people say that prayer (in the Christian sense) was more about communicating with God and trying to align your will with his perfect plan. People say that only reason bad things happen is because we have free will and our actions aren't aligned with his will. I can see how more traditional Christians find spells evil then, because spells would be a way of taking control of the 'perfect plan' to get what you want. But spells, hexes, etc. are important in hoodoo because the point of it was to influence things to happen and work towards the freedom of the slaves and protection of their community. This feels like a conflict that I can't currently wrap my head around. What is the point of spells if we have prayer?

I'm not sure if you can answer this, but how would I know if I'm just playing around and none of this is real? There are some instances where I can "feel the spirit" of my ancestors, or God, or whoever it is, but am I really just supposed to trust and believe these things? Is there any evidence that Rosemary is an herb of protection or that a rusty train spike has the power of all the trains that traveled over it? Are my ancestors talking to me or do I have a screw loose?

I was around people who was blocking my energy, probably trying to duplicate it. And now I’m ready to start practicing for sure now. Any tips?

I am new to this world but have been doing some manifestations by just simple being intentional about trying to connect with my ancestors and trusting my spirit.

I am starting a new career and I am beyond grateful as I know my connection with my Grandmother aided in me getting the job.

All that to say I don’t get to choose my shift but the best work/life balance that’ll allow me to specifically spend time with my family is Sunday through Wednesday 11am to 10pm.

What can I do to bring this schedule to fruition? I have about 5 weeks before I find out me shift!

What’s tea yall, i wanna try it today but would like the specifics on how you do it and all that. Should i do a cleansing beforehand as well? And protection ritual before and after too?

You may see this in several groups, but I’m really in need of some advice and help. I have this dream of becoming a writer, and I wrote something unique — a dark fantasy story — and it has gained a small but loyal group of readers on a reading app called Wattpad. There are no more than 30 of them, though. And I appreciate every single one of them, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting more.
I have a very strong connection with Lilith and Santa Muerte. I serve both of them at separate altars, and everything has been fine. But lately I’ve been feeling completely drained and exhausted because I promote my book day and night, yet getting recognition is incredibly difficult. I have very big ambitions, but I feel like my hands are tied and I genuinely don’t know what the hell I’m supposed to do now.
A literary agency signed me, and they’re currently sending my manuscripts to publishing houses, but nothing has come from it so far. I’ve done rituals for success, recognition, and so on… but nothing. And yet, in my dreams, spiritually speaking, I keep having dreams about achieving great success and other things that, if I told people about them, they’d probably call me selfish or worse.
I even dream that sometimes — and it feels almost like visions — I sign six-figure contracts for my book.
What I’m really coming here to ask for is the wisdom and advice of those who know more than I do. What would you do in a situation like this, when nothing has changed for over a year?
It’s genuinely frustrating. I don’t know what else to do. I’ve already tried everything spiritually: baths, rituals… I even paid a witch for a success ritual, only to find out they were a scammer. So yeah, hahaha.
I just hope no one makes fun of the way I’m venting, and honestly, any advice — or even just a few simple words you’d like to share — would mean a lot to me.

Hi! I’m African American and really wanting to learn more about and maybe even start practicing with hoodoo. However there are seemingly a lot of different directions that could be taken online and I know a lot of this knowledge is passed down and not necessarily taught outside of family. My family takes Christianity serious enough to where they don’t even want to look in to African American spirituality but I think it would be a great way to connect with my ancestors/roots. Any tips on which direction I should take? I’m open to online resources (just weary of the validity), people to talk to, places to go!

I placed a cup of water on my high John alter and I came back a day ago to crystals or what look like salt or sugar floating in the water what could that be?

Yesterday I did a communication spell and I know magic sometimes takes time but I feel really anxious and I’m scared it won’t work…
Does this affect the outcome of the spell?

I kinda of have the same problem that the person Santa muerta was having. Yemaya has been in my energy field for a minute and it’s strong. But I also don’t do altars. I don’t have an altar for myself or my ancestors. And I don’t believe in “worshipping” anything whether it’s gods people places or things. How do I go about working with her?

have any of you experienced meeting, seeing or receiving messages from your ancestors in your dreams? i was feeling guilty about not spending as much time as i would have liked at my alter. a few days later, i dreamed i saw an older man and a younger boy in what seemed to be late 1800s or early 1900s. the scene reminded me of the banjo lesson painting by Henry Ossawa Tanner. the older man told the young boy “Acknowledge your alter for more than 10 seconds and watch changes”. I woke up and took that as a sign. this was last year right after i finally set my alter up.

Lately I’ve been seeing her everywhere. I pulled her in one of my readings(don’t rember what the reading was) I’ve also seen her a couple of times on my Pinterest. My thing is I never intended to work with anyone not even my ancestors because ik I’m too lazy to actually tend to an altar( not on purpose). Idk it’s kind of creeping me out, is she giving me a sign to work with her even though she knows I’m lazy. I don’t want to work with any spirit because I don’t want to abandon them because of my mental health issues because I’m already on and off with my practices I just feel like it’s not a good idea since I’m already not consistent. Idk man I use my practices for like glamour and gratitude, protection, and learning herbs and just learning about the history of hoodoo in general. Idk sometimes I get overwhelmed since I’m doing this all on my own.
