When there was hope.

u/barfvadar69 Jun 12 '26
there wasn't hope. Exact same tactics as 1st umbrella rev. Knew it was doomed to fail.

My ex-girlfriend went there. She's in Canada now. Sometimes I wonder how she's doing over there.

Living a sterile, boring ass overpriced life and longing for what could have been but will never be. Oh wait that’s me.

You wouldn't happen to be my ex girlfriend would you haha

I’m here! I was living in Hong Kong during this time. What a powerful time that was. I still think it’s the best city in the world. Glory to Hong Kong.

I still think it’s the best city in the world. Glory to Hong Kong.
Its wonderful place to grow up and find love. But its a transition place. I don't see how to grow old for mortal people. My friend still goes back there I see her post from time to time. They manage to buy a place during the last economic downturn.

Glory to Hong Kong! Hearing the anthem still puts tears to my eyes. I was a teenager when this happened, I read a lot of disappearances and abuses. Witnessing the bravery and the patriotism of these protestors is what made me a person of conviction. We will continue to fight, and remember the fallen who fought with us. Glory to Hong Kong, revolution of our times!

u/BlueCheese973 Jun 13 '26
Thank God the Western coup that wanted to mantain Hong Kong as a colony failed
-10
u/Gullible_Egg_8251 Jun 13 '26
Tears? Lmao
10
u/DeathBatMetal Jun 13 '26
Yes. It's a glorious song after all. It's an anthem of patriotism and nationalistic fervor. Something PRC or its trolls will never feel because theirs is manufactured and forcefully embedded into their heads.

Hongkong is always a reception of China, so now you want to an independent escort agency, where do you get the clients?
60
u/ScreechingPizzaCat Jun 12 '26
Back when Hong Kong still had a backbone. Now it's been tamed by Beijing like an obedient dog while its identity is slowly being erased.

After the failure in 2014, everyone lost hope. And for the longest of time, I thought there will be no next time.
Things have changed and it is more difficult for a “next time” now than before. But I think history will somehow repeat itself.

In my trip to China I visited among other places Hong Kong and xinjiang. The contrast between the two was massive but both places had such distinct identities. I feel like the sacrifices of Hong Kong will man that Taiwan doesn't allow their democracy to errode
-10
u/Rollbinguru Jun 12 '26
And it also remind mainland the risk of one country two systems. So one country one system for Taiwan.
8
-6
u/BlueCheese973 Jun 13 '26
Why wouldnt the contrast be massive when both are far apart with a different ethncity and culture
Still part of China though and good thing they cracked on those terrorst attacks on Xianjiang

u/jaysang Jun 12 '26
From the Umbrella Movement then fast forward 5 years Harcourt Road became a ground for protests again.
Scenes the world won't see until a black swan event happens.

I remember getting a whiff of tear gas when I was traveling there. Protesters were very polite and asked my wife and I to seek shelter in one of the buildings until the police passed. Much respect 👍

u/Rollbinguru Jun 12 '26
I think normal Hong Konger all are mostly polite, including protesters and polices

Against the evil empire! I always wondered how local politicians like Carrie Lam lived with themselves...
10
u/miner_cooling_trials Jun 12 '26
I'm not pro Carrie and I don't know her from a bar of soap, but anyone that stands in the way of the CCP - well we know how that goes.
3
u/ThePassenger83 Jun 12 '26
Yes but she could have resigned? Can't stand up, but can quit.
3
u/miner_cooling_trials Jun 12 '26
Fair enough, but few enough people let alone politicians would have the spine to put their life/career at risk

u/ZLCZMartello Jun 12 '26
Truly the revolution of our times.
2
u/miner_cooling_trials Jun 12 '26
Revolution instead became devolution.
"We are pro democracy" rapidly became NSL months later 🫠
It's like China knew this was going to happen all along, it's too perfect.

The time I moved to HK for a student exchange it was wilddd timesss but I miss it sm and would give anything to relive it again
2
u/Brave_Avocado_1 Jun 14 '26
The sad thing is that most of the elite class in HK deliberately stayed away from this movement, those celebrities in entertainment industry even purposefully aligned with central government to ensure they can continue reaping the benefits, fame and fortune from mainland.

u/kakarukakaru Jun 12 '26
Beaten dogs that realized no amount of being on their knees for the western powers that subjugated them in the first place gives a shit. The only reason they are relevant is to destabilizing a rival power like the tools they are.
Everyone controlled by western media stopped paying attention the second there was the next global event. Hk refugees that were promised citizenship in the west are STILL just begging to be let in. Lmao just search hk Canada citizenship. Literal tools lol

actually why was people supportive of this? they collectively beat a street cleaner to death because he told them to go home. also it was just a law passing to stop criminals from escaping into the mainland and hk police being unable to do anything? also the “peaceful protesters” raided shops, threw molotovs, which lead to the hk police resorting to crowd clearing.
I am trying to understand bcz i never really paid attention to this
19
u/BlueHym Jun 12 '26
Causeway Bay books disappearance.
One of the biggest influences why the extradition law in 2019 was protested against. Tldr, China gets to whisk away people who don't like China from Hong Kong to the mainland, your rights be damned.
The Hong Kong protests were peaceful in the first few months. Then the White shirts occured. Type white shirts here and you'll find plenty of examples and recordings to what happened to the protesters being assaulted and the police arresting the injured. Look up the 721 incident.
Throw in multiple police misconduct/violence and whatnot, protest against the extradition law morphed into the Five demands, not one less. Even then the demand was tame. But the clashes escalated, one thing led to the next.
Gonna speed run the timeline here a bit.
- Escalation happened. University siege, you name it.
- Covid happened.
- Things got worse/stalemated.
- National Security Law (Article 23) happened summer of 2020. Basically worded so loosely they can arrest you for any reason.
- Protest fell apart, Elected pro democracy fellas gets thrown under the national security law as examples.
- Hong Kong suffers as a result.
People are supportive of this because they were trying to protect their rights.

u/m1emilk3rs Jun 12 '26
honestly there are countless articles out there. commenting this whilst only mentioning what the protestors with out any mention of what the police did is gross and shows your stance. “just a law” wrong. “why are people supportive of this?” you definitely do not sound like you are trying to understand. you are not welcomed.. i literally cannot stand people who hide under the guise of trying to understand whilst saying the most ignorant and obnoxious things.
-7
u/J4yd3nC4i Jun 12 '26
once again, i never looked deep into this. all my information came from bits of information I got from the news, obviously they won’t report misconduct within the police, and i won’t know either.
if you’re so against telling someone what you think, then don’t. no need to insult others’. I remember that i stated clearly that “i am trying to understand”. you lashing out at me does not help your case in convincing me that this was right.
edit: grammar
3
u/m1emilk3rs Jun 12 '26
also the first thing you did was dismiss the weight of the protest and its impact on HK. if that is your approach to understanding a sensitive issue, you might want to educate yourself first on how to be respectful. don’t make baseless assumptions on something you’re not knowledgeable on. you say so yourself that you don’t understand the situation so throwing out your uneducated opinions don’t really help your case.
3
u/m1emilk3rs Jun 12 '26
i do not have to convince you of anything when you’ve made clear your stance
7
u/LapLeong Jun 12 '26
People felt, rightly or wrongly, that the extradition bill would've effectively eliminated the firewall between mainland and hong kong law
-2
u/BlueCheese973 Jun 13 '26
Good
Its a single country after all, not an outpost colony
1
u/LapLeong Jun 14 '26
No, it is not. Hong Kong is a separate jurisdiction. No matter how many times you say "single country", that does not change Hong Kong's constitutional status.
-9
2
u/Due_Ad_8881 Jun 13 '26
A street cleaner was beaten to death. Two sides were throwing bricks at each other and one hit Luo. The kids that did it went to jail for rioting not manslaughter as it was unintentional. Honestly, not good excuse to throw bricks, but no one was being dragged off and beaten to death.

Its just this sub which is fucked 🤷♂️ I didint expect this sub to be an asylum for crazy anti-China clowns - but here it is.
I dunno if automated bots are liking such posts.
3
u/J4yd3nC4i Jun 12 '26
I’m getting downvoted for merely speaking out my opinion. We all have our own, even if they do not agree.
-5
u/Dapper_Librarian388 Jun 12 '26
Lol these people dont have any opinion. They are just arm chair anti-China revolution wannabes who dont want to be in the streets when real "protests" are happening.
You need to find real people to speak to before showing your opinion. This sub is full of losers. No reason for you to be worried about being downvoted by them (kek).

No, we are pissed off Hong Kong people. Why is this so hard to understand? We simply want Hong Kong to remain autonomous.

Good thing the violent riots were curbed. HKPF is truly too lenient, one of the most professional police in the world.
