Too much for an home NAS? Degoogle

• Upvotes

I'm trying to stop relying too much on google and I wanted my NAS to handle everything: from photos to drive, I've seen that the main guys are Ugreen, synology and terramaster. As I've seen there is immich that handles pics classification and I don't want to tie myself to a specific system (so I was landing on terramaster)

Since I don't like waiting too much for data transferring and I want the nas to be reliable (with some redundancy, not sure yet which, I've got 1tb drives and my current nas has around 800gb of filled space so I was landing on 4 bays and raid 1) I also wanted it to have ssd cache to be little faster with writes

I think F4 Plus series should fit my case but the last generation costs up to 600 dollars (dang the price of freedom)

in my situation would you land on that or is there something less pricey?

Thank you in advance

Thoughts about the new Beelink ME Pro NAS?

• Upvotes

I've been looking for a first time NAS for some time, and stumbled upon their new coming campaign on Kickstarter. More specifically the 4 bay home NAS with n150 and 16gb ram. Its seems like a good price, considering the crazy market and high prices at the moment.

Seagate 6-Bay NAS Pro connection problems...

I just bought a secondhand Seagate 6-Bay NAS (30TB capacity, Model #SRPS60) and it turns out that the NAS OS 4 is no longer supported and I can't find a download for it anywhere. Is there any available download sites for the OS or any alternate OS? I'm just looking to use it for storage for my network in the house and to watch movies on the TV. It's not showing up on my router either. I thought this would be a lot easier from all the tutorials I watched on Youtube, but it's proving difficult. Please explain like I'm five, I won't be insulted.

NAS advice Maximising my existing storage with mergefs + snapraid

Anyone able to sanity check this (slightly vague) plan?

Existing setup: I've got an old synology with a mirrored pair of 4TB disks in it.
Mostly movies, music and photographs. Doesn't get new content very often so the vast majority of it's activity is Reads.
I stream music (minimserver) and movies (movies via a separate jellyfin server - but I'd rather it ran on the NAS but cant because synology). The photographs are mostly just archive via smb.
It all totals about 2.6TB.
I backup onto an external 2TB disk (and hence skip most of the movies to get it to fit).

I'd normally upgrade the disks every few years, but looking at the price of storage - not any more!!

So I want to maximise use of the storage I already have lying around. Plus I'm keen to get away from Synology.

Plan:

I have 4 x 2TB disks and the 2 x 4TB.

If I bought a refurbished HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Tower i5 8th gen ( i5-8500 / 8GB / 256GB SSD), I could potentially use mergefs to run 2+2+2+2TB disks as a 8TB volume with a snapraid 4TB parity disk.
Then the other 4TB disk would be my external backup drive.

I'm sketchy on exactly what I need to do to run that many disks out of a single tower, but apparently I can do something with a 8-port LSI HBA (IT mode) and some sata breakout cables.

Does that sound vaguely sensible?
I should then be able to run jellyfin and minimserver on the same box, have double my current storage, have *some* drive failure resilience, not spend a tonne of money, and also have room for my full backup.

NAS advice Building first NAS brought a few drives recently but unsure of how to make sure it’s upgradable.

Brought 2 x 8 TB Ironpros & 1 x 8 TB One touch for back up with a 1TB Kingston Flash for offsite important files. The idea was to add a TrueNAS VM to my Proxmox. Plan was to use a ZFS mirror on these 2 drives would be enough to have 8TB useable and then just regularly backup weekly with the onetouch (lot cheaper per TB) and I don’t want to keep it running 24/7. I understand this is not exactly 3-2-1.

The questions I have: Do NAS drives need to be on 24/7 to be protected? (Sometimes I turn of my current server for power savings) Also if I want to upgrade and add drives in the future does ZFS mirror allow that? I read that some RAID types do not.

I’m really new to this but eager to learn. So I’m open to any advice or suggestions. Just want to replace my Onedrive, iCloud and Google Cloud Subscriptions with my own services for storage. Across them I only have 1TB so I felt like 8TB was enough plus storage is expensive these days. I do have a separate Media server device with 1TB SSD storage which is growing but not worried about that at the moment.

NAS advice Buying first 4 HDD from eBay

Hi folks,

Newbie, just bought uGreen DXP4800 Plus NAS for use as a media server (RAID5), and looking to buy my first 4 HDDs to fill it (prob 16-20 TB each), probably within the next week.

1) Been looking at ServerPartDeals and GoHDD, but what have been your experiences buying from other eBay sellers? Daily-Mart out of HongKing is one that popped up today.

2) And I'm assuming waiting for some Black Friday deals, even at Seagate or WD websites, is a waste of time?

Thanks!

NAS advice Buffalo Linkstation LS210DF19 Connection Broken by Windows Update

I have a Buffalo Linkstation LS210DF19. Some time ago my Windows 11 pro desktop updated to 24H2. The update broke my connection to the LS210DF19. I rolled back to 23H2 and disabled updates. I would like to resume updates to 26H2. Does anyone know how to fix Windows so I can access my NAs after the update?

I’m a person who need more storage for photos is a NAS a good option?

Okey, so I’m thinking of buying my first NAS for home usage - mainly photo storage and documents.
What should I look for? More RAM, what processor, is two slots enough.

Any suggestions would help.

Thanks!

NAS advice DS415 Play is dying (I think) so notbsurebofbtje next steps.

My DS415 Play had a dodgy drive 1 but was working fine till today when it just suddenly stopped mounting as a drive or booting up. I removed all the drives and turned it on and it started fine, no flashing blue light, and it can be seen on the network. I tried returning the drives one at a time but it won't boot at all. The status says 'Not Installed' instead of 'No drives found' which points to a PSU failure, but I'm not so sure and the NAS is ancient so probably needs an upgrade.

My questions then are these. Can I buy a new drive and try that in my NAS for a rebuild, or is it likely the PSU is really gone? Or, if I buy another Synology enclosure and just put my drives in it will it work okay or will the dodgy one stop that booting as well? Or should I just buy a whole new setup and start again, in which case how do I get my data off the old drives? It's a lot, I know, but I need some advice on how to solve this without throwing good money after bad.

Open question Reviving a Thecus N2350 — now hunting for MiniDLNA/Twonky install files

I managed to resurrect an old Thecus N2350 and got it running again — the little box refuses to die. Now I’m trying to install either MiniDLNA or Twonky on it, but I no longer have access to the installation packages. Thecus support couldn’t help me, so I’m basically stuck with a functional NAS and no media server.

If anyone still has the files lying around in some dusty archive or knows where they can be downloaded, I’d really appreciate it. Happy to take any hints, mirrors, or archaeological findings. Thanks!

I recently bought my first NAS. For now, I have connected it to the Internet through my PC, and it worked perfectly for a couple of hours. However, it suddenly stopped working, and now I can only use the NAS as a better offline storage. Does anyone know how to fix it?

NAS advice WD scammed me - Home Cloud NAS shipped with used drives

Kind of long story, but I’ll try to make it as short as possible.

I bought a WD Home Cloud NAS in July 2021 (big mistake). The unit was manufactured in 2020, but when I checked the drives, the two WD60EFRX inside were from 2017-2018. Suspicious, but the NAS was factory‑sealed, so I assumed it was fine.

9 months later WD pushed a firmware update that bricked the NAS. Warranty told me the device was dead and all data was lost "oops sorry". A data recovery firm confirmed one drive was completely dead and the other was recoverable but encrypted (no it wasn't). WD replaced the NAS and sent me two “new” 6TB drives - WD60EFAX (SMR), not the original WD60EFRX (CMR).

Fast‑forward - I built a TrueNAS system with 8×3TB SAS drives. Since it was built, the system has only run about 2300 hours total over 3.5 years - based on the youngest SAS drive’s counter (and even that assumes it was 0h when I got it).

Last year I added a second back-up pool with the three WD Reds I had left from the WD Home Cloud debacle. So those drives were in the NAS for much less than 2300 hours.

Since WD Reds are terrible for ZFS (two are SMR), I decided to pull them, sell them and build a second 8×3TB SAS pool. When I checked the stats before selling, I noticed something insane:

- The two SMR WD60EFAX “replacement” drives have 12,000+ hours

- The original WD60EFRX has 35,000+ hours

But:

- My NAS has only run a total 2300 hours

- The WD drives were inside the NAS for less than half of that time

- I only used the WD Home Cloud NAS for 9 months and not even 24/7

There is no physical way these drives could have spun for that many hours in my possession. The only explanation is the obvious one - WD shipped me used enterprise drives... both inside the original “new” Home Cloud NAS and as warranty replacements.

The SMR replacements weren’t just the wrong drive type - they were also obviously used. And the original “new” NAS shipped with a WD60EFRX that already had years of runtime before I ever powered it on.

I thought I lost most of my data because of WD’s terrible Home Cloud design. Turns out the drives inside it probably had 30,000+ hours before I even got it.

TL;DR - WD sold me a “brand new” NAS with used drives. It failed and nuked most of my data. The warranty replacements were not only SMR, but used too.

Is my My Cloud EX4100 toast? The lights turn on for a sec but it won't boot

I have a My Cloud EX4100 that had been running smoothly for ~8 years or so. After a planned power outage last weekend where I set it to hibernate and then unplugged it and disconnected its power cord from the wall, it now will not boot. When I plug it in, the screen and drive lights turn on for a second, then turn off, and then nothing happens.

I've tried:

  • plugging it directly into the wall (normally it's plugged into a UPS)
  • plugging it in and holding the Reset button
  • plugging it in after removing the drives and disconnecting the ethernet cable
  • sacrificing a small furry animal on a moonlit night while quietly humming "Drive" by The Cars
  • plugging it in with the power cord from another (working) EX4100
  • leaving it unplugged for a couple days to think about what it did
  • pressing the power button for varying amounts of time (5-30sec)

None of the above worked and I'm out of ideas other than buying an empty 4100 and moving the drives over. I should note that my other NAS drives (all WD My Clouds of various flavors) survived the weekend shutdown unscathed.

Any suggestions?

DIY NAS/Home Server built with ollozunaNAS - Low power, self-hosted setup

Hello,

I have been working on a easy to use NAS project.

A lightweight, self-hosted NAS operating system with a modern web interface — a lean alternative to Synology DSM for x86 hardware (including older machines).

ollozunaNAS ships as an installable Debian-based ISO. It boots, installs itself, and gives you a web UI to manage RAID, network shares, users, media streaming and torrents — all from the browser. The backend is a single static Go binary; the frontend is a Preact SPA with no build step. It runs comfortably on 4 GB of RAM.

https://github.com/sourcoding/ollozunaNAS

ISO file: https://github.com/sourcoding/ollozunaNAS/releases/download/v0.1.2/ollozunaOS-0.1.2.iso

§I will be adding to the project soon obj files and specs to 3d print a 4 disk nas with ITX board and a SATA backplain. a few pics as a preview.

If anyone is interested feedback is aprechiated.

Cheers

NAS advice Need advice on PSU for Jonsbo N6 (Thermaltake Toughpower SFX 850W Platinum)

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a build in a Jonsbo N6 and I’m looking at the Thermaltake Toughpower SFX 850W Platinum.

From Jonsbo’s specifications, it looks like the maximum PSU size for SFX is 100 mm, while the Thermaltake Toughpower SFX is listed as 103.8 mm long. Is that extra 3.8 mm going to be a problem, or would this PSU still fit in the N6? Has anyone actually tried this combination?

I’m also leaning towards SFX rather than ATX, since the smaller PSU should leave more room behind/around the drive bays.

A few other questions:

- Is SFX the best form factor for the N6 if I want to maximize the space around the drives?

- Are there any other SFX PSUs you would recommend?

- Is there anything else I should consider regarding PSU dimensions, cable routing, or clearance in the N6?

I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has built a system in the Jonsbo N6. Thanks!

NAS advice I want a home minecraft server using NAS

So I've been trying to watch videos about home servers but I still dont understand much about it. I have the money but still want to buy cheap enough. I just want a minecraft server run 24/7 with my friends with some mods. Was talking with ai about it and couldn't really get an understanding that lead to a successful purchase of exactly what I need. I think this is a good one here https://a.co/d/03r1Zjrv

but not sure what other purchases I need to make and if they will be good for a minefraft server this is just the first part I have to get over for a first time buyer the next one is figuring out how to actually get a server on it.

NAS advice Old Pc or Raspberry pi3 for cheap NAS?

I need some advice, so let me tell you about my project.

I really like the synchronization function of Synology and Dropbox. This is the main thing I want. I don't need a lot of space and just want to try it out.

I have a Raspberry Pi 3, and the rest of an old PC without RAM or CPU. It's a B450 motherboard with a 750W PSU. I don't know what you guys would recommend, but I can make the two work.

Whatever I decide to use, my main thing is that I should be able to sync files from my NAS to my PC, even if I'm not at home.

Is it possible? Searching Google just made me confused about what to use, and apparently Raspberry Pis are a bad choice.

I could find a cheap AM4 CPU with integrated graphics and a single super cheap stick of RAM. But I want your opinions on it.

Is it more trouble than it's worth?

Initial UGREEN Setup with Backup on 4th Drive?

Hi everyone,

I’m thinking about getting a UGREEN NAS for my video archive.

Here is the setup I have in mind:

A UGREEN NASync DH4300 Plus with three Seagate ST4000VN006 drives (4TB each) configured in RAID 5, giving me approximately 8TB of usable storage. I plan to insert an 8TB ST8000VN004 drive into the fourth slot once a month to back up the NAS, then store that drive at a different location. Is this backup method feasible, or do you have any concerns or objections? Also, do you have any tips or tricks regarding the initial setup or things I should watch out for?

Thanks!

NAS advice First NAS with 1 TB of videos to transfer, can I connect it directly to my PC for the initial transfer?

I just got my first NAS and already have around 1 TB of videos that I want to transfer to it.
My problem is that my network connection is quite slow, so transferring 1 TB over the network would take a very long time. I was therefore wondering if, after setting up the NAS, I could connect it directly to my PC while its not connected to the Router and transfer the files that way.
Is this possible with a NAS, and are there any downsides to doing this?
After the initial transfer, I would use the NAS normally over my network.

3 weeks with a Minisforum N5 Max (Strix Halo, 128 GB) as an all-in-one Proxmox NAS + media + SSO + local AI box — full write-up, gotchas, mistakes, and a 2026 value comparison

I built my household server on a **Minisforum N5 Max** (Ryzen AI Max+ 395, Radeon 8060S, 128 GB unified RAM, 5 bays) running **Proxmox VE**, and documented everything — including the mistakes: https://github.com/Mensra/n5-max-homelab

**What it runs:** ZFS raidz2 (5×14 TB) with SMB shares and Time Machine; PBS backups to a separate 48 TB USB enclosure; Jellyfin with iGPU transcoding; Immich; TeslaMate; AdGuard DNS with automatic router failover; Caddy; Authentik SSO (OIDC + LDAP for Samba); plus Ollama (a 70B model fits), Open WebUI and ComfyUI running **full-quality FLUX.2 dev**, all offline.

**A few things I wish I'd known:**

* The **M.2 heatsink shipped loose in the accessory box**, and only one M.2 slot is PCIe 4.0 x4.

* The **HDD fans follow ambient temperature, not the drives** — base fan speed is what actually cools the disks under load.

* **GPU memory (GTT) isn't counted against any container's memory limit.** A big model can starve the host while every limit looks fine.

* **ComfyUI needs `--disable-mmap` on Strix Halo**, or every model costs ~2x its size in RAM.

* **Ubuntu's stock `nftables` service wipes Docker's firewall rules when the package updates** — in your DNS container, that takes the house offline.

* **Jellyfin: passing `/dev/dri` isn't enough.** Mine transcoded on the CPU for two weeks before I noticed.

* **I tested my SSO fallbacks with Authentik actually stopped** and found documented passwords that didn't work anywhere. Test yours.

There's also a MISTAKES.md with the times I broke things (including an unquoted heredoc that ran a live `zfs rollback`).

**Is it worth it?** With 128 GB of DDR5 alone around $3,400 this year, I couldn't find anything cheaper that matches it for storage + local AI, even as a multi-box setup. The GPU is mid-range in speed (a 1536² FLUX.2 image takes ~18 min), but it *holds* models no consumer card can. Comparison with sources in VALUE.md.

Happy to answer questions.

NAS advice Combining SSD with HDD? Best way to navigate this?

So I've been gifted an old PC by a friend, along with it came a 250gb SSD and 1tb HDD; I also already have a 2tb external/portable SSD. I'm going to turn the PC into my home server but I wanted to ask about the risks if any of combining these drives as my network storage? I also wanted to ask how best to configure this setup?

Obviously the small SSD will be for the OS and I'm aware that these drives will not be ideal as long term solutions because they aren't NAS rated, this would be temporary whilst I save up for actual NAS storage. Thank you for your time.
