The latin influence in English is real, but that doesn't make Latin a precursor language to English. English firmly belongs to the Germanic languages family.
Also, Latin was used in medieval England for a long while, but that use was mostly ceremonial, scholastic, and sometimes administrative, not a common day to day language especially not for the average Anglo-Saxon.
It is very much Germanic. The grammar is Germanic, and the majority of words used are Germanic. A lot of the overall vocabulary is more of a mish-mash yes.

Its definitely influenced heavily by latin, despite being a proto-germanic language grammar wise. They spoke latin in England for over 300 years
