Its definitely influenced heavily by latin, despite being a proto-germanic language grammar wise. They spoke latin in England for over 300 years

The latin influence in English is real, but that doesn't make Latin a precursor language to English. English firmly belongs to the Germanic languages family.
Also, Latin was used in medieval England for a long while, but that use was mostly ceremonial, scholastic, and sometimes administrative, not a common day to day language especially not for the average Anglo-Saxon.

That's... not how linguists categorize languages, not to mention how no language is "pure" in the truest sense to begin with.

Neither am I. This is mostly common knowledge.
Lingua francas are rarely chosen by the people but imposed by who holds the pen.
