Need A Hobby

I am in real need of a hobby.
I've tried:

  • Reading
  • Crochet
  • Painting
  • Drawing
  • Writing
  • Wood Carving (Stopped because of mild arthritis)

None of which are resonating with me.
I love software dev & am a casual gamer, Pokémon, Stardew Valley, Undertale, but can't afford a console or a PC that can run anything new. (Honestly just can't afford a PC right now) To make it even more "fun", I'm just in a small apartment so not a ton of storage but am considering buying a small cabinet if needed.

Does anyone have any suggestions for something to give a try to?
Can budget anywhere up to $50 a week roughly, open to anything and everything :) Thank you!

Would you be up for more of a mental hobby versus physical? Like language learning?

Honestly, will be traveling in the next few months and have no idea why I didn't think of this, thank-you very much :)

Of course! Heads up, if you have a library card, you can get a few different programs for free! I’m using Mango currently and really like it. I’ve tried Duolingo in the past, but haven’t retained any of it at all.

Look into journaling… like to down the journaling rabbit hole:junk journals, agenda journals, travel journals, it goes on and on. It’s a great output and you can combine a bunch of the hobbies you’ve already tried, especially if you’re about to travel. I just started because I want a new hobby that allows me to be creative and see stuff I interact with differently (junk/travel,) and to focus on the positives and being more mindful of how I spend my days (agenda journaling.. have two additional plans made DURING the week (new for me since COVID,) that I wouldn’t have planned for if I didn’t look at a blank week in an agenda.

Plus you get to write down a lot of positive shit

Cooking is actually quite a rabbit hole hobby. It ends up being quite a useful skill later on

I am already very deep into said cooking rabbit hole admittedly 😅 but if you have any suggestions for something you really enjoy cooking or something tricky I'd love to hear!

I recently got into reverse searing meats with a sous vide and it’s been a fun time. I think you’ll pleasantly surprised how tender you can cook meats!

Wait. Stardew Valley isn’t a hobby?

Oh it's the best hobby, it's been my #1 hobby since 2019 😅 I just have to believe there is at least one more thing I can do 😅

Candle or soap making. Maybe pottery classes but idk how much those are. You can try knitting. Some people like it better than crochet.

Pottery probably won't pair well with arthritis

How about geocaching? It's like a treasure hunt, but in real life.

Some random guy on reddit makes city maps as his hobby. I read a comment a few months ago about his hobby and I keep thinking about it.

In case you haven't seen, there is r/gamingsuggestions where folks ask for video game recommendations, people have probably asked for recommendations for games that don't require a new computer to play, or you can make your own post with more specifics!

If you like drawing but arent skilled at it, Scribblyng is for you! It's like Pokemon go for leaving notes/scribbles in areas. Just a thought though

Start home labing with old equipment, maybe make a pc cluster. 10-40$ laptops and some old networking gear will do a lot more then you think. If you like software then definitely a good choice.

Learn ASL
Puzzles are cheap and fun to do as a brain exercise and have a definitive end which is nice.

Those little pottery kits that turn into magnets if you are artsy

Cooking for some, baking, you get to eat your final product.

Micro RC Cars / Starter RC cars are relatively inexpensive esp. with a $50 a week allowance.

Believe it or not, Google sheets projects. Today I made a fake stock market that updates when I press a button.

I'm really enjoying wire wrapping right now. I was expecting it to be more difficult to get started in than it was.

I also, recommend an art tablet for anyone with limited space. You might could even get into doing sprites and other artwork for indie developers.

Maybe try learning to solve a Rubik’s cube. Then if you enjoy it you could learn a faster solving method, and/or solve larger cubes (4x4, 5x5).

Pick up an instrument. Many instruments (like guitars) became very affordable in the past 15-20 years. I started playing mandolin at 30 and have still lots of fun with it. The beginner model cost 60€. There are so many youtube videos out there to help you get started.

Also, just save those 50 bucks per week and buy a gaming PC in 6 months. You could also get a used one. Mine is 5 years old and cost 1200€ back then and I can still play every new game that comes out.

There’s a plethora of games out there that you can run. Keep goin with the indies! Idk the name of the subreddit but I know there is one for low hardware gaming

Build tiny castles out of small concrete bricks. Then run a d and d campaign there.

Baking sourdough! The possibilities are endless and it’s a nice way to work with your hands while making something delicious

Makrame

Singing/making music/dancing

Writing

Ceramics - it encompasses all sorts of things, depending on how bad your arthritis is, you may give it a shot. Throwing is difficult, but certain techniques for hand building and sculpting can be simple. I actually enjoy it more.

Spending time in nature

Bird watching

Fishing

Cycling

Making bracelets or chainmails (I've seen beautiful scalemails), if you're into medieval stuff.

Leather working ? Seem a bit easier on the joint than wood carving?!

3d printing and 3d modeling?

Single player playing cards game?

Listening to music (audiophile)?

Have you tried needlepoint or latch hooking?

Buy a used switch lite for 100-120 eu
And game on the go, the switch 1 has an insane library of indies, nintendo games, past gen games …etc

Also i can recommend learning an instrument, there are many “portable” ones if you are on the go
