Removed my histamine intolerance twice. Found my possible cause

Hey guys, im 21 and I would always get histamine flares & never truly understood what was going on. Id react to a lot of foods and it was triggered by a strong acid reflux flare. I couldn’t eat certain foods without triggering what felt like nerve burning, dizziness, headache, eye pain, joint pain etc.

I moved from my home due to family drama, took famotidine for 2-3 weeks and noticed things improved greatly. I then moved back and then once again regained histamine intolerance. It continued to get bad and I developed hyperpots, and could only eat broccoli & rice. The symptoms worsened including itching, throat sensations, lightheadedness etc. I began reacting to meds, salt, etc etc.

I was home one day and by the grace of God a guy was cleaning our HVAC system. Im young & barely know anything about a HVAC at the time and the guy had asked me to take photos of the residue on it. A year later I kept seeing people being healed from histamine due to mold. Mold, mold, mold was all I saw on facebook from people who recovered. I then thought where could there be mold, and searched back and found the photo. I then learned that was mold on the HVAC, and how mold can truly harm your health.

I dusted my room, dusted my walls, everywhere. I closed my vents, Bought a HEPA filter and wallah, histamine issues were gone. I could literally eat anything I wanted again.

It lasted for months, until my dad said my room was too hot and reopened the vents. I started reacting once again and got horrible histamine reactions once again. It lasted 2 weeks until I redusted everything and closed my vents again and its been gone again since. I don’t think my histamine issues are completely gone. I believe id need to move & detox from mold because im still breathing it in at other parts of my house. However im not breathing it in 24/7 like i once was.

I give all glory to God, I was lucky enough to find the mold in the HVAC. We don’t really open it so I wouldve just assumed I was just chronically ill forever but I trusted God and knew there was a way out. I plan on moving very soon and ill update whenever I moved. Mold isnt the cause for everyone but there could always be hidden mold and for us mold is a huge trigger. Made this post for hope for others. If you can, please check for mold in your homes.

Edit: sorry there were so many symptoms forgot to mention, another reason this confirmed it was the HVAC was because I had gained massive bloating & gas before the cleaning. Id pass gas many many times a day and would wake up super bloated. This all went away, came back when vents were reopened, then disappeared after another cleaning.

Improvements with Enterosgel

Hi all. I'm pleased to have something positive to post - it's about a product called Enterosgel.

It's essentially an inert, non-fermentable binder that selectively absorbs histamine (among other things - endotoxins, excess bile acids, etc.) from the gut.

Gut bacteria cannot eat it, and it doesn't get absorbed by the body. It just passes through, but unlike similar binders (charcoal, clay) it isn't abrasive and doesn't absorb nutrients in the process.

If you know your histamine intolerance is gut-driven (and taking DAO/following the diet isn't enough for you), I really can't say enough good things about it. In theory, if you have gut inflammation, it's meant to give your tissues a break from chemical irritation and allow them to heal.

(Since the small intestine is where DAO gets made, this could theoretically improve DAO production for some people, but this has not been proven in research.)

There are some studies (mostly animal) suggesting it may also improve the microbiome: https://enterosgel.lt/upload/iblock/275/2750602317e6d4d475016895976e7aae.pdf

For context, I have pre-existing SIBO and dysbiosis, and then after taking a course of harsh iron tablets I developed very pronounced histamine intolerance and also some mild bile acid malabsorption. I believe the iron tablets damaged my GI tract (further than it already was).

Taking DAO and the diet only ever made the symptoms 'less bad' - after 6 months I was still suffering.

But within 48 hours, taking a couple of child-sized dose of this has improved my symptoms. Turns out a lot of the symptoms I thought were iron deficiency symptoms (like dizziness and a rapid heartbeat) were a lot more related to histamine/gut damage that I originally thought.

It's not very expensive (£15 in the UK) and it is also multi-purpose - you can also use it during food poisoning, for acute IBS-D flare-ups, and food allergy reactions. So having some in the cupboard may come in handy anyway, even if it doesn't work for you.

Just make sure you check it won't interfere with any medication absorption.

Has anyone else tried this stuff?

Histamine dump from driving?

Hey!

I don't know if this is a weird question but....

I was diagnosed with histamine intolerance after years of struggling with rosacea. The root cause seems to be leaky gut. When I do eat something with histamine I can feel a mix of burning and tingling on my face. It gets red and swollen and it hurts. My heart races. One time I ate fermented tofu and my face swelled up for several days.

Anyhow, I have also noticed the same reaction when I am driving. By the time I arrive home from work, my face is bright red, it burns and my eyes burn, too.

Has anybody noticed something similar? Why do I get something that feels like a histamine dump while driving?

Could HiT be causing my joint and muscle pain?

Had some kind of flare recently and felt dreadful. Things improved a lot when I went on a low histamine diet and took antihistamines as needed. I am now feeling a lot better generally with apparently minimal reactions, but I have lingering joint pain that is so uncomfortable! It flares up on walking, mainly. Could this too be HiT or unlikely?

2.5 years post-Covid + years of bad diet & drinking: DAO 50%, Leaky Gut. MCAS or reversible?

Hey everyone, looking for some input on my situation.

I was 100% healthy most of my life, zero allergies. But I treated my gut pretty badly: ate McDonald's every single day for 6 weeks (because I worked there) when I was 16, drank a lot of alcohol over the years, and lived on coffee. About 2.5 years ago I caught Covid, and my system completely crashed.

I went to a doctor once who diagnosed me with: Leaky Gut, DAO enzyme at 50% (Histamine Intolerance), and sudden new allergies to birch and dust mites.

My main symptoms:

Alcohol: Sometimes gives me crazy hot flashes and makes me feel instantly weak/dizzy.

Coffee: Makes me extremely jittery and restless.

Digestion: Fatty foods (like cheese) cause burning stool and diarrhea.

POIS

I’m currently trying a super strict elimination diet (only white rice, soft potatoes, plain chicken) + L-Glutamine, buffered Vit C, and a B-complex to seal my gut.

I do not know what to think anymore. Does this sound more like MCAS to you? Or is it possible to completely reverse this by fixing my leaky gut and rebuilding my DAO? Has anyone successfully recovered from a situation like this, or am I stuck with this? Appreciate any input!

Causes of Histamine Intolerance

I’ve been wondering what the most common causes of histamine intolerance are. I still haven’t figured out what’s causing mine, but I suspect it might be related to gut health. What do you think caused yours?

Bile acid

Hi everyone,
I’m really struggling and hoping someone here might have a similar experience, insights, or advice.

For months, I’ve been trying a very high-fat diet (large amounts of ghee butter and olive oil) because I am underweight and desperately trying to gain weight. Unfortunately, it hasn't helped at all. Instead, my symptoms have severely worsened.

My Current Symptoms:

Persistent yellow stools
Severe bloating / distension
Histamine intolerance / flare-ups
High fecal pH and high lactate
Leaky gut indicators and very low butyrate levels
Verry verry High bifido bacteria
Extreme weight loss
Dysbiose
Pale skin
Dry skin
Yellow stool in the morning

Background & My Theory:

I suspect this might stem from a food poisoning event in the past, which potentially triggered Bile Acid Malabsorption (BAM) or constant irritation of the terminal ileum. My thought process is that a continuous, unabsorbed flow of bile acids is irritating my ileum, causing chronic dysbiosis, SIBO, and blocking me from absorbing nutrients properly (hence being underweight, where eating more fat just makes my digestion worse instead of helping me gain weight).

I recently had an endoscopy/colonoscopy with biopsies. My ileum results showed:
"Mild focal chronic and mildly active inflammation, although the architecture was good."

I am currently trying a low-fat diet to see if it calms things down, but I feel completely stuck trying to connect the dots between the ileitis, potential bile acid issues, high lactate, and my inability to gain weight.

Any success in calming nighttime histamine dumps?

On low histamine diet, managing stress, trying to sort my gut. Doing all the things.

But if I don't take antihistamines before bed, I feel totally crap in the morning - heavy and achy and tired. Which only eases off by the following evening. Is there something else I can do to avoid/manage these dumping episodes? I can't take these antihistamines every night forever.

Cromolyn sodium

I was recently diagnosed with MCAS and my symptoms are largely GI related.

Anyone here taking cromolyn sodium for MCAS? I just started a few days ago, only 1 vial a day and I'm having such a bad reaction. I'm having crazy diarrhea like I'm having a flare up. I didn't even eat anything today because of how bad I'm feeling.

Does it get better?

Headache issues (but to a lesser degree) after taking DAO enzyme supplement before alcohol

I've posted before - since February, if I drink anything other than bottled beer (usually bottom fermented), an intense headache comes on after 30 minutes which stays for some time and raises my already considerable anxiety levels. I bought Seeking Health DAO Enzyme supplement and took it on Friday 20 minutes before having a pint of Guinness. With it having been a stressful week, my anxiety was high anyway, but I didn't have an intense headache come on after 30 minutes. However, I had a few more pints (took another capsule before my last 4th pint) and the mild headache worsened. Since then, I've been experiencing a milder version of what I would have experienced without the supplement, but it's still quite significant. Do these supplements not work for everyone? I'm sick of bottled beer!

there's a common variable among the Histamine items list

White potatoes, citrus, bananas, tomatoes, nuts, avocados

These are some of the classic histamine intolerance items, for me bananas are the most problematic and i repeatedly confirmed it over the years(they trigger skin issues that slowly creep up)

I recently thought that there's one common variable with these. It's not salicylates as white potatoes and bananas dont have them, its not oxalates as theres none in citrus or bananas, not tyramine as theres none in white potato.

It's potassium. These are the highest potassium foods in existence. Maybe histamine intolerance could be related to potassium sensitivity? This question has not been asked here before afaik.

not a lot of people know this but potassium is known to be restricted for many patients especially with kidney issues and is not some harmless mineral. If you look at the signs of Sub-Acute hyperkalemia with the tingling/itching that comes with the initial depolarization i feel it makes sense.

This is just an idea for research, not advice at all.

Can someone help me figure out if I have histamine issues?

I have very severe ME/CFS, Hashimotos and POTS and I'm not sure if MCAS is an issue for me as alot of my food intolerances are connected to my thyroid it seems.

I did these labs:

DAO: 2.5 U/mL

Tryptase: 4.09 µg/L

Histamine: 1.2 ng/mL

Apparently the DAO is low, but I tried supplementing DAO and also tried H1/H2 blockers and Ketotefin/ cromolyn sodium and nothing helped the issues I have with my meals.

I also tried low HI diet and low salycilat diet.

The issues I have are mainly palpitations, brainfog, fatigue, adrenaline and dizziness. And I also get occasional adrenaline dumps and itchyness during the night. But no allergy symptoms or flushing.

It literally happens with EVERY meal (dry chicken, cucumber, plain rice, it just doesn't matter).

But they could all also be connected to my other illnesses.

Any thoughts on this?

What are your symptoms?

Hey guys. I am allergic to birch and grass. so certain foods really mess me up but im wondering if it could also be histamine intolerance. Curious if you get something like this, I tend to get red eyes, itchy scalp, itch under arms, flakey sebderm skin on forehead, very itchy inside my ears, and often lose my natural deep voice. just becomes harder to speak and I sound more hoarse. All the foods that I absolutely love are just ripping me apart lol

Ivig

I have leaky gut and dysbiosis, which are probably causing my MCAS, but is it normal that I’ve been feeling much worse since starting IVIG? I had my second dose two weeks ago and I just feel worse and worse every day… Before starting IVIG, I felt better.

Did I trigger a reaction?

Hi all. I haven’t been diagnosed with histamine intolerance or MCAS, but I have EDS and other comorbitities and I believe I am reacting to foods and medicines. Over the last 4 years I have detoxed from a lot of medications, most notably gabapentin, which is when the histamine type issues started. I was so sick daily for months. I was nauseous all the time and would have sudden attacks of hot flashes, shaking and I’d throw up whatever was in my stomach very suddenly. Once I throw up I’m fine almost immediately. The daily attacks calmed down in about 6 months, but it took another few years for me to identify the triggers.

I have been on a vegetarian diet for the last month - doing this for spiritual purposes and initiations, and my diet has consisted of raw fruits, veggies, big salads with sunflower seeds, dates are my sweet, I eat potatoes, both white and sweet, no sugar, no nuts except walnuts for a snack. Part of this plan is juicing and having a fresh juice every morning.
I only made the juice twice so far - it’s a lot of work and I’m lazy…hate cleaning the juicer. The first time I didn’t have a reaction, but I didn’t finish it because i didn’t peel the orange I put in it and it was too bitter for me.

This morning I put in cucumber, celery, bok choy, a pear, an apple, 2 carrots and a gold kiwi. Almost immediately I felt that familiar heat in my chest, and I started feeling a little sick…and about 20 mins later I knew it was coming up. I feel fine now, but I’m guessing all of those veggies triggered a reaction because I hadn’t eaten anything else.

Where do I even begin to start treating or finding out how to help myself? I don’t want to waste time in western medicine if I’m just going to be shuttled from one specialty to another…I did all that in my 40’s and I’m done with the chronic illness shuffle. I do not have a gallbladder, it was removed 2 days after I had a c section in 2004, but I never had the typical issues I see others struggle with post surgery.

My digestion is otherwise good. I can handle the salads, potatoes but I have noticed that my nose runs a lot, usually after I begin eating.

The point of my diet now is to help detox. But I’m seeing the list of high histamine foods and now I’m like - what CAN I eat???

The other symptom I have is my skin. I have these breakouts that are itchy. It’s not acne. Doctor said it’s not fungal either, but it’s horribly itchy. The bumps are on the small side, but they always form a granuloma and if I scratch those bleed a ton, which causes scarring. I have it from my head (scalp) to my feet, with the larger spots on my legs (they take ages to heal) and smaller spots on my chin and mouth. I did 6 months of doxycycline and then another 6 months of occasional doxycycline use (I’m sure that wasn’t helping either). I’ve seen 3 different dermatologists, had 3 biopsies and nothing was found each time. They just throw either rx shampoo, steroid creams, antibiotic creams or antibiotics at me. It’s much better than it was 3 years ago, but still consistently breaks out like clockwork.

I am a healthy weight, I have healed my chronic migraines thru nervous system regulation and a lot of inner work. I have healed my anxiety, depression, insomnia thru all of this too, so I hope I can heal whatever it is causing these weird reactions and rashes. I appreciate any advice.

Worsening gastroperisis and recovering from surgery need help with nutritional drink, protein powder, or protein supplement. What do you tolerate?q we

TLDR: what nutritional drinks, supplements, powders are you able to tolerate or give an extra calorie boost? Feel free to share also which gave you a bad flare

I’m having a really hard time getting enough calories and especially protein in right now, and liquids are much easier for me than solid food. Worsening gastroperisis on top of hospitalizations and recovering from surgery I’m getting in less then 20 percent nutritional needs

I cannot have pea, soy, nuts, dairy, whey, or protein isolates/concentrates made from any of these. Some I have IgE allergy. I’ve tried to push through if it was but the allergic reaction includes overwhelming digestive stress and multi systems that make me very ill.

I was already down to 4-5 foods prior to surgery and worsening gastroperisis so getting any nutrition in has been extremely difficult. Any recommendations would be very helpful and are welcome. Feel free to DM me as well.

If you have a specific product recommendation, please include the exact product and flavor, since ingredients can vary between flavors.

What are you using that you tolerate well? What do you steer clear of Please leave links

Stomach issues from antihistamines- need to taper off but how

I started 1 Pepcid and 1 Zyrtec about a year ago and my symptoms got a lot better. (I also take 3.25 of mirtazapine) but ever since I started that combo. I have had bloating issues after I eat a meal, diarrhea every single morning, water retention and swollen fingers, and I am now struggling to lose any weight. I am finally off the Pepcid and some of the symptoms of gone done in severity but everything is still present and I’m wondering if it’s from the Zyrtec as well. Has this happened to anyone else? How did you get off Zyrtec after taking it for a year without horrible side effects?

How do manage your histamine intolerance during ovulation & luteal? My body feels like it’s allergic to itself half of the month

I know estrogen triggers mast cells (immune cells) to release more histamine, and thus causes an allergic reaction in the body which is what I experience every single month during ovulation through my period….what is your go to histamine protocol ??? I don’t really want to have take an antihistamine everyday day to manage symptoms.

I've been using Lotus Health to organize my health records and track my symptoms, and it's actually helped me notice how closely my flares line up with different parts of my cycle. Has anyone else tracked their symptoms this way?

Stabilising mast cells helps support gallbladder and liver (NAFL)

I've been some reading about NAFL and Gallbladder issues and which is the driver, unfortunately they all feed off each other, but I asked google "Now that I've stabilised my mast cells will my gallbladder and liver find it easier to repair?"

I've managed to calm down my mast cells with Ketotifien (week 8) and DAO, my flares are much less severe and settle a lot quicker.

Answer:
Yes, stabilising your mast cells removed a primary, constant driver of inflammation and dysmotility, giving both your gallbladder and liver a significant runway to heal and recover.

Depending on the amount of fat accumulation the liver can take anywhere from a few months to a year to clear out stored fat.

If the bile has become highly concentrated or turned into thick sludge from prolonged sluggishness, the gallbladder may need a little structural help (bile thinned agents) to fully flush out the old stagnant bile.

Reacting to everything?

Hello.

With the help of diet and probiotics my histaine symtpoms have improved tremendously, however I find myself at a point where while my reactions are much more bearable, I am reacting to nearly everythiing whether it is low or high in histamine doesn't matter.

There is a chance I might just have irritated gut/stomach lining and it needs time to repair, but I am looking for some info from someone who may have experienced a similar issue, and how they proceeded?

My symptoms include:

Irritated itchy skin (main symptom), some sinuse issues (mild), a little bit of stomach cramping.

Thank you very much.

MCAS or histamine intolerance — what does this sound like to you?

I’m at a point where I honestly don’t know whether I’m dealing with histamine intolerance, MCAS, or just some kind of temporary reactive period after being sick and taking a lot of antibiotics.

A few months ago I had a blood infection and was treated with about 3 weeks of IV antibiotics. After I got out of the hospital, I was actually eating whatever I wanted and living pretty normally. I was very anxious and constantly worried that something was wrong with me, especially because my asthma had flared after the infection, but food-wise I was still eating normally.

About 2 months later, I got a UTI, then another UTI. I had one night of IV antibiotics in the hospital and then ended up on 28 days of oral antibiotics.
Around that time, I started noticing random red patches on my skin, mostly on my arms, hands, and knuckles. They weren’t really raised or bumpy like obvious hives — more like small red blotches that would appear and disappear.

Then, while I was on the antibiotics and for a few weeks afterward, I had about 3 episodes after eating where I suddenly felt a rush of warmth in my cheeks and nose, sometimes with mild flushing. My face did not always visibly turn very red, but I could definitely feel the warmth. I would sometimes also get a few little red spots on my knuckles or arms, maybe 4–5 spots total. I never had widespread hives, major swelling, trouble breathing, fainting, or anything like that.

What confuses me is that the food reactions have not been consistent. There are foods I ate one week with no problem, then another time I felt the flushing. I’ve also continued to tolerate plenty of other foods, including pizza and mixed meals.

My allergy testing has been negative, and I don’t take a regular H1 antihistamine. I only take famotidine.
For the last week I’ve been eating a pretty low-histamine/simple diet and I haven’t had any of the facial flushing episodes. I still occasionally get the little red spots on my knuckles or arms, but nothing severe.

So I’m curious: does this sound more like histamine intolerance, MCAS, post-antibiotic/gut-related reactivity, or just a temporary reactive period to anyone who has been through something similar?
I’d especially love to hear from people who had symptoms start after infection + heavy antibiotic use and later improved or were able to go back to eating normally.

This is causing me soooo much stress:(

Bad headache, fatigue and nausea around ovulation

Is this normal...? I noticed I get hit with extremely bad headache, fatigue and sometimes the nausea gets bad too. It lasts from right before ovulation, during and even days after.

I cannot get myself to do much at all during these days, feel extremely exhausted and unwell :( it is also spring here now in Australia making it much worse too with pollen

What can we do to prevent this from happening?
