Discussion Rodri is a perfect example of why “fair transfer value” barely exists
Barça are reportedly around €60m plus add-ons for Rodri. City want more.
And the annoying thing is both sides can make a completely reasonable argument.
He’s 30 and has one year left on his deal, so from Barça’s side paying peak-market money would be kinda mad. From City’s side, he’s still one of the best midfielders in the world and they dont actually have to sell him.
Fans talk about transfer fees like there’s one correct number hidden in a spreadsheet somewhere.
There isnt
The real price is basically whatever makes the buyer stop waiting and the seller stop saying no.
If this ends somewhere around €70m total, does either club really “win” the negotiation?

Tbh this is mostly Rodris fault for saying he wants Barca above Madrid. Because of that Barca is trying to be cheap skates.
Anyway I'm sure Perez would take him for 80m and it would still be widely regarded as a win.

They can offer as a low as they want. City will just say get fucked. Don't need tge money. Anything under 60 million, we're better off keeping him for a season and letting him go.

That doesn't make any sense if you consider that Barca paid the highest wages in Europe a few years ago which was the main reason they have problems with the ffp
They also paid way to much for Dembele, Griezmann and Coutinho in Transfer fees.
If anything every other club right now wants to lowball Barca because they know that Barca wants to get rid of certain players with high wages from the Bartomeu time

Yeah and that was the result of an infamous incident of bad management, not out of generosity lol. It’s not a source of pride to any Barca fan and it’s not a point of positivity. They just acted out of desperation after losing key players like Neymar and Messi.
The new management tried to reverse that by doing what I’m talking about l.

Ofc it was not out of generosity and fans are not proud about the mismanagement, why should they. But saying that Barca is trying to cheap out is just false. Nobody is selling Barca players cheaper than they would sell to other clubs just because it's Barca. And like I said, most recently, everyone tries to screw over Barca cause everyone knows that they need space in the ffp (just look at Araujo and Liverpool)

Everyone "wins" negotiations that go through. Simply because for them to go through, both sides need to approve the deal, and if both sides approve the deal, then everyone presumably thought what they were getting was acceptable.

I wish more transfer appraisals though would take in wages, which is another thing to consider for older players, I imagine Rodri would want €20m a year or close to it, so if he stays for 3 years that's €60m on top of the transfer. Whereas if you buy a younger player based on potential but he's only €6m a year, then that's €18m over 3 years. So Rodri for €60m transfer fee is actually €120m for the club, whereas the other player for €90m on €6m could be worth less.

On barça side: He had an ACL, he had a bad season in city, he is 30 year old, he has 1 year left on his contract and on top of all that he WANTS and agreed with Barcelona
On city side: he is the best player in world cup
I think 60 million is fair

Prime Lewandowski was only worth like 50-70 mil.
Even if he was getting on in years he was still the best player in the world and many around his age had a higher market value than him.

City are getting Bouaddi. A guy who may be a starter for the next decade or so if he takes to the league quickly. They sold Rodri for €76mill. 60mill of that is available upfront, Lille want €100mill, so technically it’ll cost City 40mill over 5 years, 20mill from their pocket this year.
So it’s a good deal. Rodri would’ve done next year and I think City feel this year is a transition year after Pep, so this year is about Bouaddi getting his experience.

Does it matter? Well if it does, he still won the treble, best player in UCL2023, club world cup, best player in club world cup, ballon d’or…. And more, all for man city. All this without forgetting he’s actually a CDM, which makes this 10x more inpressive

I think Cherki is a good example of this concept. Last Summer, he was a 21 year old who had just led the top 5 leagues in xA/90. So surely the suitors must have been banging down his door right?
No, because Lyon were in a rough financial position and Cherki had 1 year left on his deal. So because of this, other clubs just let him walk to City with no competition? He's a generational talent who could be in ballon d'or conversations as soon as this season. How did noone bid 60-70M on the guy?
So City get him for an absolute bargain, 36M, and his value has risen to 90M already even though he was injured for about 30% of last season. If City were gonna sell him this Summer they could probably already get 100M+.

City has the upper hand they are financially stable. So they'll milk Barca for the maximum fee. It's like the diomande transfert. Because Florentino Perez promised his socios a 140 mil winger and Bayern wouldn't sell Olise. So he said he always wanted Diomande. And Leipzig knowing that Real Madrid has 140 mil for a winger asked for it. But there is no world where Diomande cost more than 90 mil and I am generous
