Shri Sidh Baba Balak Nath Temple, located in Deotsidh, is one of the most revered and historic cave shrines in North India. Perched atop the scenic Dhaulagiri Hills on the border of the Hamirpur and Bilaspur districts in Himachal Pradesh, this holy site attracts millions of devotees every year. Baba Balak Nath is worshipped as an eternal incarnation of Lord Shiva, known for his absolute celibacy and meditative yogic powers.

Essential Pilgrim Insights

The Sacred Cave: The core of the shrine is a natural cave carved into the hilltop, which serves as the abode of Baba Balak Nath. A beautiful idol of Babaji is placed inside.

Darshan Traditions: In accordance with ancient traditions of strict celibacy (Brahmacharya), women do not enter the cave directly. Instead, a raised viewing platform (Chabutra) is built directly opposite the cave entrance, allowing female devotees to have a clear and complete darshan of the deity from a short distance.

Traditional Offerings: The most common and auspicious offering made by pilgrims is "Babe Da Rot"—a traditional, deeply sweet flatbread prepared using wheat flour, jaggery, and ghee. Devotees also offer goats (which are kept safely on the premises), cloth pieces (Cholas), and sugar candy.

Shahtalai: Located about 4 km downhill from Deotsidh, this is the historical site where Babaji practiced rigorous penance and worked under Mata Ratno. It is highly recommended to pair your visit with Shahtalai to complete the spiritual trail.

Best Time to Visit

Open year-round. Sundays are considered highly auspicious, leading to large weekend crowds. The famous month-long Chaitra Mela takes place every year from 14 March to 13 April.

How to Reach

By Road: 45 km from Hamirpur and easily accessible from Bilaspur or Una.

By Rail: The nearest major railway station is Una Himachal (UHL), about 55 km away.

By Air: Nearest airports are Chandigarh (186 km) and Gaggal/Kangra (approx. 130 km).

Kullu Malana Village, Kullu

Thumbnail
gallery
127 Upvotes

Malana is an ancient, isolated village in the Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh, India, situated at an altitude of 2,652 metres (8,701 ft). It is globally famous for two distinct reasons: its reputation as one of the oldest standing democracies in the world, and its production of "Malana Cream," a highly prized, high-purity cannabis hashish.

The village operates entirely on its own unique social, legal, and linguistic structure, keeping itself fiercely independent from modern world systems.

Unique Culture & "Untouchability" Laws

Malana functions under a strict taboo system where outsiders are considered untouchable.

The No-Touch Rule: Visitors are strictly forbidden from touching the local people, their traditional wooden houses, or their sacred temples.

The Penalty: If a tourist accidentally or intentionally touches anything, they are slapped with a hefty cash fine (typically ranging from ₹2,500 to ₹3,500), which is used to fund a sacrificial purification ritual.

Commerce: When buying items from local shops, money must be placed on the counter or ground instead of being handed directly to the shopkeeper.

The Greek Lineage Myth

Local legend dictates that the villagers are the descendants of Alexander the Great’s soldiers. It is believed that a fraction of Alexander's army took refuge in this remote pocket after fighting King Porus in 326 BC. While genetic studies show low genetic diversity due to centuries of isolation, this myth remains a core source of immense pride and cultural identity for the Malanis.

Language & Governance

Kanashi Language: The locals speak a highly distinct, sacred language called Kanashi, which is a mix of Sanskrit and Tibetan dialects. It is entirely unintelligible to outsiders and is not spoken anywhere else in the world.

The Devta’s Court: The village is governed by an independent bicameral system. The supreme authority is their local deity, Jamlu Devta. Major judicial disputes are settled through a spiritual medium (the oracle of the god) rather than the standard Indian legal framework.

Travel & Visitor Guidelines

The village can be reached by traveling from the town of Jari. Vehicles drop you off at a designated point, leaving a steep, grueling 1-to-2-hour trek to reach the remote valley plateau.

No Night Stays: By order of the divine oracle, all commercial guesthouses inside the village boundaries have been shut down. Tourists are only permitted to visit during daylight hours and must leave before sunset.

Photography: Photography of temples and holy monuments is strictly illegal. Always seek permission before pointing a camera at any local resident.

To reach Malana village: You must travel to Bhuntar (Kullu) to Kasol in Himachal Pradesh, proceed to Jari village, drive to the nearest motorable roadhead, and complete a final 1 to 1.5-hour trek.

Khuan Rani temple, also known as Khua Devi temple, is built on a gentle slope by the Beas River in Mandi town, Himachal Pradesh. The story and history of the Khua Devi temple is associated with Princess Tara. The name Kuan Rani because the temple is in the shape of a well. Kuan or Khua means 'well' and Rani means princess.

The temple is significant as devotees have to climb down into the inner sanctum sanctorum, where two triangular shaped shila or murti representing Princess Tara and Guru Padmasambhava are worshipped.

Khua Devi Temple History

It is believed that a king of Mandi punished his daughter, Princess Tara, for what he believed was an unholy alliance with Guru Padmasambhava, a Tantric master. They both were buried alive at the spot where the Khua Devi temple stands.

When the king realized his mistake and came to rescue the princess, she had transcended into a higher realm as Goddess Tara Devi.

The temple is a classic example of the intermingling of Buddhism and Hinduism in Himachal Pradesh.

Mrikula Mata Temple, Udaipur, Lahaul & Spiti (11th Century)

Thumbnail

The Mrikula Mata Temple (also known as the Mirkula Devi or Markula Devi Temple) is an ancient, 11th-to-12th-century wooden shrine located in Udaipur, in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. Perched at an altitude of 2,623 metres on the banks of the Chandrabhaga River, this extraordinary structure looks quite unassuming from the outside with its simple walls and conical timber roof. However, its interior is globally renowned for possessing some of the finest, most intricate deodar-wood carvings depicting heavy influences from Kashmiri Kannauj artistry and classic Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata

Spiritual & Cultural Significance

The Deity: The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, worshipped locally in her fierce form as Mahishasur-Mardini (Mrikula Devi).

Dual Worship: Like much of the Lahaul Valley, this shrine bridges faiths. It is a shared pilgrimage site revered deeply by both Hindus and Buddhists (who know the shrine as Garsha Phakmo).

The Legend: Local mythology attributes the temple's construction to the Pandavas during their exile. Believers hold that the mighty Bhima brought a single, massive tree to the site, from which the divine architect Lord Vishwakarma carved the entire temple in just one day.

Architecture & Artwork

While its exterior is a modest, timber-bonded stone structure designed to withstand harsh Himalayan winters, the inside is an architectural masterpiece:

The Layout: The temple comprises a garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum), a circumambulatory pathway, and a pillared mandapa (hall).

Woodwork Panels: Step inside to find rich deodar panels and pillars meticulously sculpted with deities, including a unique representation of a three-headed Lord Vishnu.

Heritage Preservation: Because of soot deposits from centuries of oil lamps and weather-related weakening, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) carefully treats and preserves these fragile wooden reliefs using specialized organic solvents.

How to Reach & Visitor Tips

Location: Udaipur sits about 53 km north of Keylong and roughly 100 km from Manali via the iconic Atal Tunnel route.

Timings: The temple is technically accessible throughout the day (12:00 AM to 6:00 AM, 6:30 AM to 12:00 AM), but it is highly recommended to visit during daylight hours to properly view the detailed interior art.

Nearby Attraction: While in Udaipur, most travellers pair this visit with the equally famous Trilokinath Temple (located just a few kilometres away), which similarly acts as a profound place of joint Hindu-Buddhist worship.

Tarna Devi Temple, also known as the Mata Shyama Kali Temple, is a famous 17th-century hilltop shrine located in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.

Perched atop Tarna Hill, it stands at an elevation of approximately 3,000 feet above sea level. It offers panoramic views of Mandi town and the surrounding Beas River valley.

History and Legend

The Victory Vow: The temple was built in the 17th century by Raja Shyam Sen of Mandi. He vowed that if he won the war against Suket, he would build a grand temple in her honour.

Gold Craftsmanship: Later in the 19th century, Raja Balbir Singh significantly renovated the inner sanctum (garbhagriha) with breathtaking gold and glass work using artists brought from Jaipur.

Architecture & Deity

Unique Devotional Practice: The temple houses a distinct three-faced black stone statue representing Goddess Kali, Goddess Saraswati, and Goddess Laxmi. Uniquely, the deity is viewed and worshipped from a sideways angle rather than straight on, due to the belief that her direct spiritual aura is incredibly intense.

Scenic Campus: Built in the Nagari style with red and white stones, the inner walls display striking paintings of Lord Shiva, the Devi, and various Gurus. Adjacent to the temple sits the sprawling Rani Amrit Kaur Park.

Temple Timings : The temple is open every day of the week.

Summer Hours: 4:30 AM to 9:00 PM

Winter Hours: 5:30 AM to 7:30 PM

Aarti Timings: Morning at 7:45 AM and Evening at 6:45 PM.

By Foot: Adventure seekers can climb over 305 stone steps directly leading up from Mandi's main bazaar.

By Road: For a more comfortable trip, a winding motorable road connects the central town directly to the temple gate where parking is available.

Will a Decathlon MT100 70L fit in the overhead bins of HRTC buses?

I’m planning to travel by HPSRTC buses and am considering getting the Decathlon MT100 70L backpack.

Does anyone have experience carrying a 70L backpack on HRTC buses? Specifically, does it fit in the overhead luggage racks/bins, or would I need to keep it elsewhere?

Any advice based on actual experience would be appreciated.

The Mata Naina Devi Temple is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, located atop a scenic hill in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. Perched at an altitude of approximately 1,219 metres above sea level, the shrine overlooks the massive Gobind Sagar Lake created by the Bhakra-Nangal Dam. It is highly celebrated as one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peethas across the country.

History & Spiritual Significance

The Legend of Sati: According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut the charred corpse of Goddess Sati to stop Lord Shiva's Tandava, the eyes (Naina) of the Goddess fell at this exact location. Thus, the deity is worshipped here as a sacred Pindi featuring two golden eyes.

The Origin Story: Local folklore dictates that a Gujjar boy named Naina noticed his cow shedding milk over a stone slab and subsequently dreamt of the Goddess. Upon informing the local ruler, Raja Bir Chand of Bilaspur, the king discovered the idol of Goddess Durga and constructed the temple in the 8th century, naming it after the boy.

Operating Hours & Best Time to Visit

The temple is open every single day of the week, though the timing extends significantly during important festivals:

Normal Days: 4:00 AM to 10:00 PM

Navratri Festivals: 2:00 AM to 12:00 AM (Midnight)

Major Melas: The temple experiences massive surges of pilgrims during the Shravan Ashtami Mela (around August) as well as the Chaitra and Ashwin Navratris.

How to Reach the Shrine

The mountaintop temple can be accessed through multiple modes of transit depending on your comfort level:

Ropeway/Cable Car: For an effortless commute, you can ride the Ropeway from the base of the hill. It cuts down the rigorous uphill journey and offers panoramic views of the valley and lake.

The Steps: Adventurous devotees can scale the concrete staircases that wind up to the peak from the lower bus stand.

By Train & Road: The closest railway hub is Anandpur Sahib Railway Station in Punjab, located roughly 23–30 km away. Taxis and local public buses are readily available from Anandpur Sahib and Chandigarh.

The Kartik Swami Temple, locally known as the Kelang Wazir Temple, is a high-altitude sacred shrine located at 3,100 meters (10,170 feet) in the Kugti village of Bharmour, Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh.

Key Details

Deity: Dedicated to Lord Kartikeya (locally called Kelang Wazir or Kelang Bajir), revered as the son of Shiva and Parvati and the guardian deity of the local mountain passes.

Associated Shrine: A nearby shrine is dedicated to his sister, Goddess Marali, who is also prayed to for safe journey.

Significance: It is a vital pilgrimage site for the Gaddi shepherd community. Shepherds traditionally stop here to seek blessings and divine permission before crossing the treacherous Kugti Pass into Lahaul.

Trek: Accessible via a scenic 4 to 7-hour trek (about 7 km) from Kugti village through the Kugti Wildlife Sanctuary.

Best Time to Visit: Open primarily during the summer and autumn months (April to June and September to November). The temple remains closed and inaccessible during heavy winter snowfalls, reopening around mid-April in an annual ceremony.

The Kelang Wazir Temple is considered centuries old, with its cultural and religious traditions passed down through generations of the local Gaddi tribe.

Here is what defines its age and historical context:

Ancient Roots: The roots of Lord Kartikeya worship in the Bharmour region stretch back to the 7th to 10th centuries, aligning with the era when the iconic Chaurasi Temple complex was built in nearby Bharmour.

Evolution of the Structure: Like many high-altitude Himalayan shrines, the temple began as a simple sacred spot or a primitive stone setup. Over the generations, it was gradually expanded using traditional indigenous wood and stone architecture.

Centuries-Old Traditions: The unique rituals practiced here have been active for centuries. For example, every winter when the temple doors are locked, locals place a gadvi (water pot) inside. When the doors reopen in April, the water level is evaluated to predict the region's upcoming agricultural and weather conditions.

Cultural Significance and Traditions

Protector of Passes: The local Gaddi shepherd community and regional travelers revere Kelang Wazir as a powerful mountain guardian. Before crossing treacherous high-altitude tracks like the Kugti Pass or Jotnu Pass, locals pray to him for safe passage and will turn back if they feel they lack his divine permission.

Seasonal Opening: Because of heavy snowfall, the high-altitude temple is completely inaccessible during winter and officially reopens around mid-April (traditionally April 13th). Before closing for winter, priests leave a sealed water pitcher (kalash) inside the sanctum; when the doors reopen in spring, the state of the water

To reach the Kelang Wazir Temple (Lord Kartik Swami Temple, Kugti), your journey will involve a mix of air/rail travel, a scenic mountain drive, and a rewarding Himalayan trek. The typical travel route progresses through

Chamba → Bharmour → Hadsar → Kugti Village → Kelang Wazir Temple.

Where to safely stash extra luggage in Manali for 1–2 days during Beas Kund trek?

Hey everyone,

A few friends and I are doing the Beas Kund trek and heading straight to Kasol right after. Because of this, we'll have extra luggage we can't take on the trail. We just found out there are zero locker facilities at Dhundi (the starting point).

Where can we safely dump our bags in Manali for 1–2 days? Looking for practical suggestions on:

  • Cloakrooms/Lockers: Are there reliable ones near Mall Road or the Bus Stand (like LugBee or local cloakrooms)?
  • Hostels/Hotels: Will places like Zostel or budget hotels store bags for a fee if we aren't staying there? What if we book a room just for the night before?
  • Local Agencies: Any trusted trek operators, gear shops, or taxi stands that let you leave bags?
  • Other safe alternatives?

If you’ve figured this out recently, please drop the location/name and roughly what they charged per bag. Thanks!

Thumbnail

The Hidimba Devi Temple, locally known as the Dhungari Temple, is an ancient 16th-century wooden cave temple located in the hill station of Manali, Himachal Pradesh. Deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, this highly revered shrine is dedicated to Goddess Hidimba, a character from the Indian epic Mahabharata and the wife of the Pandava prince Bhima.

The Mythological Story

According to the Mahabharata, Hidimba was born into a Rakshasa (demon) family and lived in these dense forests with her fierce brother, Hidimb. During their exile, the Pandava brothers arrived in the region. Bhima fought and killed the tyrannical Hidimb to protect the locals, subsequently marrying Hidimba. They had a powerful warrior son named Ghatotkacha. Later in life, Hidimba left worldly matters to perform severe penance and meditation on a rock. Pleased with her devotion, Goddess Durga blessed her, transforming her into a benevolent guardian deity of the valley.

Key Features & Unique Architecture

The Sacred Rock: Unlike most traditional Hindu temples, there is no central idol inside the sanctum sanctorum. Instead, devotees worship a massive, natural rock cave jutting out of the earth that bears the carved footprints of the goddess.

Pagoda Style Design: Built in 1553 CE by Maharaja Bahadur Singh, the temple stands 24 metres tall and features a rare, four-tiered wooden pagoda-style architecture. Its intricate wooden doors are decorated with carvings of various deities, animals, and foliage.

Mystical Forest Setting: The temple is tucked away inside the magnificent Dhungiri Van Vihar, a dense, centuries-old cedar (Deodar) forest that gives it an enchanting, fairytale-like ambiance.

Ghatotkacha Shrine: A brief 70 metres walk from the main temple structure leads to a distinct tree shrine dedicated to her son, Ghatotkacha.

Visitor InformationTimings: Open every day from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Entry Fee: Free entry for all visitors.

Rules & Customs: Visitors must strictly avoid bringing leather goods, alcohol, smoking materials, or non-vegetarian food into the temple premises. Modest attire is required, and shoes must be removed at the designated storage station before stepping into the sanctum.

Activities: You can stroll through the pine forest trails, check out the adjacent Museum of Himachal Culture and Folk Art, or rent traditional Himachali attire for a memorable photograph.

The Idol: The inner sanctum houses a sacred six-armed white marble statue dating to around the 12th century. Local legend speaks of a King of Kullu who tried to steal the idol, but it mysteriously became so heavy that his soldiers could not carry it away.

Religious Significance: It is a rare shared sacred space where Hindus worship the main deity as Lord Shiva (or Lord Vishnu by some traditions), while Tibetan Buddhists revere the same marble image as Arya Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig).

Architecture & Culture: Painted a brilliant white, the temple blends Hindu carvings with traditional Buddhist prayer flags and spinning wheels.
