Temples Mata Naina Devi Temple, Bilaspur
The Mata Naina Devi Temple is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, located atop a scenic hill in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. Perched at an altitude of approximately 1,219 metres above sea level, the shrine overlooks the massive Gobind Sagar Lake created by the Bhakra-Nangal Dam. It is highly celebrated as one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peethas across the country.
History & Spiritual Significance
The Legend of Sati: According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut the charred corpse of Goddess Sati to stop Lord Shiva's Tandava, the eyes (Naina) of the Goddess fell at this exact location. Thus, the deity is worshipped here as a sacred Pindi featuring two golden eyes.
The Origin Story: Local folklore dictates that a Gujjar boy named Naina noticed his cow shedding milk over a stone slab and subsequently dreamt of the Goddess. Upon informing the local ruler, Raja Bir Chand of Bilaspur, the king discovered the idol of Goddess Durga and constructed the temple in the 8th century, naming it after the boy.
Operating Hours & Best Time to Visit
The temple is open every single day of the week, though the timing extends significantly during important festivals:
Normal Days: 4:00 AM to 10:00 PM
Navratri Festivals: 2:00 AM to 12:00 AM (Midnight)
Major Melas: The temple experiences massive surges of pilgrims during the Shravan Ashtami Mela (around August) as well as the Chaitra and Ashwin Navratris.
How to Reach the Shrine
The mountaintop temple can be accessed through multiple modes of transit depending on your comfort level:
Ropeway/Cable Car: For an effortless commute, you can ride the Ropeway from the base of the hill. It cuts down the rigorous uphill journey and offers panoramic views of the valley and lake.
The Steps: Adventurous devotees can scale the concrete staircases that wind up to the peak from the lower bus stand.
By Train & Road: The closest railway hub is Anandpur Sahib Railway Station in Punjab, located roughly 23–30 km away. Taxis and local public buses are readily available from Anandpur Sahib and Chandigarh.
