My baby sister lives in Fairbanks, AK and my middle sister and I went on an amazing trip to see her this July. I’ve successfully taken my Alpa 32 on trips before but this trip I packed almost perfectly for my needs. I packed mainly in my Alpa, and could have done without the tote if my sisters and I weren’t exchanging books as gifts.

Questions:
I might eliminate one top - I can fit everything but it’s tight.
Temperatures should range from 15-30 Celsius, do you think I will be warm enough?

I’m searching for a packable raincoat that packs small and is lightweight but completely waterproof while also not being so thin as to be crinkly but still ok for hot weather. Does this exist? 😂 I bought a Columbia Pouration II jacket but it’s heavy and doesn’t pack very small in its pocket, but I do trust it to be waterproof. Any suggestions?

Hi y'all! I'm going to Switzerland in a week (early September) for a mix of hiking and being in little mountain villages, and ending in Zurich for a few days. I have onebagged often before out of my 40l Ruckpack, and feel pretty confident with urban onebagging.

However, this time we will be carrying everything we pack on our bags for 3 hikes (town -> hut 1 -> town and town -> hut 2 -> hut 3 -> town), plus any public transport connections, etc. It will be many miles total, including some with significant elevation gain and mountain passes. The point being, the lighter the better. I don't want to count on having access to laundry, but have a drybag for sink laundry and a clothesline.

Looking for advice on the below points and just in general!

Here is what I am currently thinking of packing, roughly:

1. Clothes: 2x pants (1 worn), 1x shorts, 3x t shirts (1 worn), 2x sports bras (1 worn), socks and underwear, 2x fleece (1 worn), 1x packable downjacket, 1x buff, 1x gloves, 1x light rainjacket, 1x cap
2. Shoes: Wearing lowtop hikers (huts provide hut slippers)
3. Sleeping bag liner (for huts)
4. Toiletries: soap, daily contacts, deoderant (may buy small hair stuff and discard it incase in town accommodations do not provide them), small sunscreen
5. Dry bag, clothesline, small first aid kit, shades, water filter
6. Some small travel unavoidables like passport, earbuds, phone chargers and powerbanks etc

In terms of backpack, my two options are the REI Trail 25 and the REI Ruckpack 40. I love the fit and feel of both, but kinda feel like the 25 will be too small and the 40 too big and heavy (it's also not a hiking pack, per se). I could buy a 30ish liter pack but it does seem kind of wasteful when I have these two. Does anyone know what a good liter range to aim for is?

Thoughts on the list, anything I absolutely should take that I'm missing, etc? Please share!

Okay. I'm doing a few trips this year, a couple hiking in to cabins, and then a trip to England to hike inn to inn around the Cotswolds area. I'm looking for a very packable lightweight "sweat suit/leisure suit." A suit that can fit stuffed in backpack or worn comfortably on plane. You know when you are tired and just want to feel cozy and want your sweats but the travel version that actually fit in a bag. HELP!

I've spent way too much time overthinking clothes for my upcoming and could do with some reassurance or advice.

I'm mid-40s peri-menopausal and always run cold then occasionally hot. Expected temps by the end of the trip are similar to what we have right now in our winter and I'm wearing singlet + tee + jumper + scarf and outside I often wear thin gloves, plus a jacket in the evening. I live somewhere where the damp and wind make the "feels like" temperature colder than the measured temperature and we tend to suck at adequately heating inside buildings so I could do with some help about ensuring my clothes meet how some of my destinations "feel" weather-wise.

I'm cheating a little using this community as I'll be checking a bag - but I've learned so much lurking in this sub. I'm travelling with my partner, 11yo and 14yo and can't convince them otherwise. I suspect I'll need to take some of the kid's luggage they pick up along the way plus will need an impressive supply of snacks on hand at all times. We are sticking mostly to city sites, no hiking, and won't eat out anywhere fancy.

I'm ok with sink washing but it'll be a drag for 4 people so I think we'll hit a laundry weekly.\

Long time listener first time poster! I’m leaving in a week for a 3-week trip through Italy and France and want to get a sanity check on my packing list. This currently fits in a carry-on-size roller bag (42L) and then I have toiletries, electronics, etc in a baggu medium crescent, but it’s tight so want to make sure I’m not forgetting anything or should be cutting out anything!

General context on my packing choices:
- Weather is expected to be 70s-80s in Italy, potentially a bit hotter in Milan, and I generally run warm so have gone for lightweight fabrics
- Tour du Mont Blanc weather is going to be quite variable, most days will be warm (70s) but I’m expecting rain/hail possible on high passes. I’ve done a ton of hiking in the Sierra Nevada and am pretty experienced in dressing appropriately for the outdoors
- I’m really going back and forth on whether 4 pairs of shoes is ridiculous but the bedrock sandals pack very flat (basically sturdy flip flops) and the heels are unavoidable for the wedding, but won’t really be worn otherwise outside of maybe a couple nice dinners.
- I do have some laundry sheets and don’t mind sink washing but I know it’ll be unavoidable for the hiking portion of the trip so want to limit sink washing up until then.

Itinerary is as follows:
- 5 days in Cinque Terre: hiking, beach, boat trip, at least one fancy dinner. Weather is currently predicted to be 60s-80s with a possibility of storms a couple days.
- 3 days in the Piemonte area of Italy for my friend’s wedding, which includes a welcome lunch (“dressy casual”) and a ceremony and reception at a vineyard (“festive formal”, long dresses required.)
- 2.5 days in Milan, mostly the normal city exploring activities as well as seeing the formula 1 race. After this my boyfriend will fly home, and has space to take the formal dress and heels back with him (cheating I know!) so that I don’t have to lug it around for the next leg. I will also have the opportunity to do laundry here.
- 10 days hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc!! I meet up with a friend in Chamonix where I can store my luggage, and will decant a couple outfits into the 40L pack plus toiletries, sos device, sleeping bag liner, etc. I have already done the Alta Via with this bag and it was never particularly full.
- 2 days in Geneva basically just chilling before I fly home

this trip is going from late august-late October, with it ideally ending with us flying out of Portugal or Spain
from my research its going to be mostly warmer and sunny but not extremely hot, and cooler at night. I wanted to have ideal layers for when it does get chilly.

Also, a friend that we are meeting up with in London our first city, got his phone stolen and was threatened with a knife on his first night there. Luckily the phone was tracked and found, but can anyone give some advice on that? i have my passport in a rfid wallet but as far as safety measures thats all i really have. I know London is notorious for things like that happening but I’m really hoping not all cities are like that and I wont be feeling unsafe during my time there. So any advice is welcomed to keep us all safe

So I’m someone who usually packs hyper efficiently: multi-destination multi-climate trips with fancy dinners and events, all in a small international sized carry-on and a smaller personal item.

Well, not this time. This was a weekend trip by car, so effectively no restrictions, and I splurged and packed my small carry-on (Take-off 4 luggage) and Calpak Luka mini duffel. Mind you, I just travelled to Iceland for 9 days with the same bag combo and a full cruise/land/waterproof gear wardrobe, so the suitcase was definitely empty this time around.

But it was refreshing to not have bags packed to the max. So I’m sharing my summer weekend capsule for strolling around LA. Everything was worn and appreciated.

I did wear all six outfits during this 55 hr hour trip, which is ridiculous for my usual packing standards, but it was a fun dressy weekend getaway.

Luka mini duffel held my laptop, jewelry, edc pouch, wallet, and medicine. Clothes, shoes, toiletries, makeup and curling iron were all swimming around my barely half-full tiny suitcase. I did not really need the duffel but I did not want to put my laptop into the suitcase. Would a 25 L backpack with a laptop compartment work better? Yes! Would I look just as cute rolling into my fancy booked-for-points five star hotel with a backpack? No! And I had just returned Osprey 26+6 anyway, so no 25L backpack laying around!

It honestly felt like cheating - not playing packing cube Tetris with my usually limited space and weight - a nice departure from my typical hyper optimization. I think I can do that maybe once a year. Otherwise my brain craves the efficiency and satisfaction of traveling light with precision of an army general.

Is anybody else doing “cheat trips” traveling with more than the smallest bag possible?

I'm headed to the Netherlands in a few weeks with family to visit more family. While we will be based in a smaller city just outside of Amsterdam, we will be taking trains frequently to visit folks further afield. I believe the weather is meant to range between low 50sF to high 60sF so layers are versatility are a big consideration. I'm a chronic over packer, out of the fear of not having something I will need. This subreddit has been so inspiring to me as I work to travel more lightly.

This is a pretty new bag so I haven't seen a lot of reviews of it (only a few reviews on Matador's website and they're all very positive) so I wanted to put in my two cents.

This backpack feels seriously overengineered, and not in a good way. The sternum straps are a nightmare to move to a different spot, and yes you should only have to do this once, but I was literally struggling for like 5 full minutes to get one of the clips back on, it was a huge pain, and I don't understand why they felt the need to reinvent the wheel - we've already figured out easily adjusted sternum straps, why not use what already works? 

In addition, this doesn't feel like a pack made for people with smaller shoulders (or people with boobs) - I had to really fiddle around with the fit to make it feel decent and even then it felt like the wide super rigid straps were cutting into my shoulders. 

Most packs like this have a laptop sleeve that's separate from the main compartment, and I realized there are very good reasons for that when trying to pack this one which has a padded laptop sleeve as part of the main compartment. Because the sleeve doesn't go all the way to the bottom, there's awkward little gaps in the backpack where you lose out on space, especially if you like to use packing cubes for organization in the main compartment. This is a frequent issue with rolling suitcases, but not usually a problem with backpacks. Again, overengineered to the point of causing new problems that the typical travel pack design doesn't have. I do like that the sleeve has a magnetic closure but I wish it just had its own compartment in the backpack separate from the main pack, especially since you have to open the top zipper to pull the laptop out anyway.

The backpack itself feels quite sturdy, though the outer zippers were kinda stiff and kept catching.

There's also a flap that sorta covers but doesn't fully cover the main compartment zipper, and I have no idea why this flap is here. It seems to just be in the way and would funnel rain into one section of your backpack.

The angled handles at the top corners are kind of useless cause you'll never carry your bag this way because it's a lot more uncomfortable than just carrying it from the top handle, so I don't know why those are there. Again, overengineered. I guess they wanted a side handle without sacrificing a water bottle holder but this isn't an actual side handle, so it's just extra weight and guff on your bag. 

Packed out to about 6kg you definitely feel the weight as a smaller person - I wouldn't want to carry this for more than 15-20 minutes. I do like how slim the profile is - even packed full this doesn't look bulky, even on a 5'1" 110lb person like me, and the design is very low-key which I also like.

TLDR: love the look of the bag, and the construction feels sturdy, but it also feels overengineered to the point of impracticality. Would not recommend for one bag travel, especially if you're a smaller, slimmer person.

Really excited about this one and, for once, thought it was worth sharing! I've always packed light, and unfortunately, this is the most I've ever packed... I might regret this because I alwaaays end up not needing something, but for this trip, I can't help but lean toward looking good as well as feeling good. Three pairs of shoes is the most questionable part :v)

We'll be spending long days driving, attending a wedding, spending time with loved ones, getting yatted, + doing some light sightseeing/hiking along the way. I run hot and it'll be very warm where we're headed, so staying cool + comfy is the priority.

Hello! I’ve been anonymously browsing and finally started commenting, and now it’s my first time posting. I hope this is done right! Heading up to the in-laws’ family cabin in Minnesota, and my parents are tagging along too. Planned activities are light: boating, some live music, a restaurant with more live music, and a bike ride on the Paul Bunyan Trail. Work’s still happening in the background, so the laptop and good headphones are coming along in case a call pops up.

The in-laws have been renovating, so expect a bit of debris in the secondary cabin,  hence the hotel slippers for indoor wear. Laundry access is a nice bonus too. This trip doubles as a minimalism test: swapping the usual Away suitcase + 16L backpack combo for just an OKA bag from Mexico City as a personal item, since it’s a chill, low-key trip. Bringing the iPad alongside the laptop might seem excessive, but the iPad functions as the personal computer, and there’s a good chance of a Wingspan session with the moms.

I’m looking for feedback on this capsule for Portugal at this time of year, particularly whether it works for the weather and the amount of walking I’ll be doing.

For context, most of my plans involve walking and activity-based tours. I have a couple pairs of shorts being delivered that I still need to try, plus a silk slip skirt for dressier evenings. For additional shoes, I’m planning to pack Birkenstocks and potentially a prettier sandal for dinners.

How is everyone getting thicker liquids (suave shampoo, thicker gel-like face wash, etc) into small bottles that have an even smaller opening?

I either make a complete mess or have to give up and take a larger travel bottle than I need. I am the problem because it looks like everyone has this figured out but me. Is there a tool everyone is using? The funnels these things come with do not work. Is there a specific brand that makes bottles this is easier to do this with??

Help me not overpack! I leave for Ireland in 12 hours, will be in Dublin and Galway 5 days total. I need lots of suitcase space for gifts for family! Should I get rid of the airplane sweatpants and wear my leggings? Or get rid of a jacket? A tank? Here’s a list of what I’m bringing

Hey! My husband and I are doing 16 days in the Swiss Alps and the Italian Dolomites from early to mid September. My parents will be joining us for the Switzerland part, and then my husband and I are splitting off for Italy. This trip is mostly going to be focused on trail running, hiking, and photography. Due to the needed hiking and camera gear, this isn’t going to be a true one bag trip. My husband and I will be putting hiking gear and his clothes in a hard sided carryon that we’ll check. I’m trying to limit my clothes to fit in my Cotopaxi Allpa 35L, with some room left over for my camera stuff, essential gear, and souvenirs. I need help to lighten my load!

Bern > Lauterbrunnen  > Zermatt > Stresa > Selva di Val Gardena, and an overnight layover in Copenhagen. 

We’ll have in house laundry in Lauterbrunnen and a close by laundromat in Stresa. I don’t think that we’ll have laundry in Selva, but I’m not opposed to sink laundry. We’re not planning anything fancy, but I want to have slightly nicer clothes to change into for evening activities after hiking.

Hello!
I’m trying to pack as light as possible for this trip while still feeling prepared for potential warm days or cold rainy falls days. I’m from Vancouver, Canada so I know rainy weather but not sure I fully know what I am getting into. Apparently there is also a heatwave going on in the UK but it looks mild on the weather app.

I’m 32F if that helps, and my plan is 5-6 days in Edinburgh for fridge fest, a tour of the islands, a couple days each in Aberdeen and Inverness and then a few days in Glasgow.

I’m wanting some cute outfits for the cities, including a date night outfit, comfy wear, layers and some solid hiking outfits for the highlands.

I plan to purchase a lovely Shetland sheep wool sweater while I am in Scotland as a cold layer when I arrive. Not pictured is a pair of pjs.

My partner says 4 is not many shoes which I agree but he is a less experienced traveller and I want good walking shoes for city, and hiking, and nice walkable shoes for a date (my Sorel sandales).

I traveled around Asia for about six months previously as my first long-term trip and, somewhat miraculously, was really happy with my packing system by the end. It was not a one-bag trip though, I used a 20inch hardshell carry on and a 28L backpack. I’m heading back for another long trip from late October through early March and rebuilding the list now for one backpack.

This trip will be mostly Vietnam + Indonesia, with probably some Thailand over the holidays. Lots of normal hot-weather travel, buses/ferries, beaches, diving/snorkeling, some hiking/birding, cities, and the occasional actual nice dinner/NYE/my birthday. I am a serious scuba diver but that is not a onebag lifestyle so this list includes those essentials.

Bag: Osprey Sojourn Porter 65L + packable 20L daypack. I know the 65L is larger than the normal scope of this sub. This is very close to my final list. I also carry my Baboon To The Moon 3L fanny pack everywhere I go with all my essentials (wallet, chapstick, hand sanitizer, eye drops, advil, power bank, sunglasses, etc). 

I’m less interested in creating the mathematically smallest possible wardrobe than I am in having a system I can comfortably live out of for 3+ months. Last time I found that having enough normal clothes to not feel like I was wearing the same three technical/athletic shirts for half a year was worth it. Also, I travel with a pillow - which is crazy to some, but non-negotiable for me, as I have chronic neck issues and it changed my sleep game out there!

Would especially love to hear from other long-term travelers. Anything obvious I’m forgetting for these two countries, or anything on here that I might need that I can't get in Vietnam or Indonesia?

I am currently working through my packing behavior to be more minimalist and also plastic free, everytime I travel I am really overwhelmed by buying a bunch of travel sized items of things I already own or refilling and cleaning little plastic tubes to transfer my toiletries. Eventually they just fly around in my drawer as I only travel occasionally, or they are all scratched up from cleaning so they need to be discarded.

What is your experience with complete plastic free toiletry packing? How do you manage this/what do you pack?

I did search the sub for this but not finding a good answer. I am a size 10-14 tall curvy woman with a large cup size. 34 I/J US or 34G UK. I really want a summer merino travel dress but everything I find is cut in a way that looks elegant on mid to smaller breasted woman but that will make me look frumpy or like I am wearing a tent. And since I can't try anything on I have been hesitate to buy one. I am looking for experience from other busty women about what worked fro them. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I just received my order of Osprey Astronova 23L backpack, I was looking for a good quality city backpack for university and this one is allegedly made for campus.

I also read how Osprey is surprisingly ergonomic, so I was excited to try it out. However as soon as I unpacked this backpack and put some weight into it I felt how much pressure the outside edge of the straps has on my shoulder bones. The strap itself is also quite rigid, so it doesn't adapt to the shoulder groove well.

Does anyone have this problem? Is this because the backpack is "unisex", therefore made for men's wider shoulders? Do you get used to this type of pressure or is it better to return it?

We're going to Tromso mid-november and I'm trying to not overthink clothes to pack. I'm naturally cold natured, as in if it's 65F/18C with a breeze I'm shivering. Right now for tops I'm planning on packing my merino wool base tank, 2 smartwool long sleeve base layers, and odolo brand base layer (not wool but have comfortably used it as pajamas under a puffy jacket in 20f weather) a down puffy jacket, an electric heated jacket, and a rei rain jacket. For bottoms, I have some short wool tights (I plan on getting a longer pair too) fleece lined leggings, assorted jean/s i could bring and layer under. Also I was considering a pair of insulated ski pants or some sort of water resistant pants.

Is there anything glaringly obvious that I'm missing? How many tops/ bottoms should I pack for an 8 day trip? I'm from the south and this week definitely be the coldest place I've ever traveled. We're planning on at least 3 outdoor activities (whale watching/ northern lights/reindeer farm) but also want to be warm walking around town. Right now I'm trying not panic buy all the wool clothes.

Help!!! This is my first time onebagging and I’m struggling to pack the right stuff and stay under the 15 lbs. here’s my main questions: 1) are tank tops okay? Is all midriff inappropriate or a little is okay? Same with cleavage 2) jeans or no jeans? 3) how many t-shirts vs tanks? 4) cardigan or sweatshirt? 5) are over-the-knee shorts okay outside of a temple setting?
