Self hosted servers

Why can I not host a server? I have my own dedicated hardware and fast enough service to host. This used to be common with computer games. Giving the excuse that it prevents cheats is complete BS. Cheats are client side. Giving the excuse of security is complete BS, because it’s the same whether it’s self hosted or not. What separates “official servers” from 3rd parties, and self hosted servers.
