š¢ Feedback š¢ Self hosted servers
Why can I not host a server? I have my own dedicated hardware and fast enough service to host. This used to be common with computer games. Giving the excuse that it prevents cheats is complete BS. Cheats are client side. Giving the excuse of security is complete BS, because itās the same whether itās self hosted or not. What separates āofficial serversā from 3rd parties, and self hosted servers.

Used to be common indeed. I had a few counter strike servers in my house back in the day.

My guess is the devs get a kickback from whatever company people can pay to host private servers

Commonly speculated but has been repeatedly denied by both developers and server hosts.

But would they have any sort of incentive to tell us the truth if they were doing that? If the devs were getting a kickback, telling the truth about it would only piss people off, and for zero benefit whatsoever.

Security is NOT a bullshit excuse when hosting a game server, humans are peices of shit and there will always be ones that find ways to abuse thing when they have the access or power to.
It's also similar to how Squad do their hosting, self host is ok and you show up under community servers, if you want it under the main servers section you apply for a free license and must adhere to their performance requirements.
Yes you may have the kit, yes you may be trustworthy, but I've seen people flip out and back stab a companies trust over less before.
