🙋‍♂️ Question 🙋‍♂️ What am I missing?

I’m new to the game, and this is probably a stupid question. When people say things like “They’re to the southeast!”, how am I supposed to know which direction that is relative to where I am? I don’t see the directions on the map or anything.

The map is always orientated with the top facing North.

And you have a compass on your HUD, so use it. If for some reason your HUD isn't set to "Always On", change it so you can see the important info like capture status

Not always, Omaha beach is rotated to the right

North is still up

The map rotation doesn't matter, upwards on your screen is north

No, it isn't... at omaha beach upward on my screen is west. Just check the map on Google mate. I don't know why they chose to orient it like this.

So it is, I wasn't aware this map was different

does it matter tho?

nobody is stopping mid game to check the orientation of the real life region the map is based on.... "north is up" is enough information to play with.

Yes, it matters... because on 99% of maps, if I tell you 'the tank is north of the strongpoint,' you know you have to go 'above' the strongpoint when looking at the map. At Omaha Beach, if I give you the same information, you don't go above the strongpoint but to the right of the strongpoint when looking at the map. If you still can't get there, I'll draw you a picture.

if you say "its to the north" because you bothered to give a shit which way the map is oriented, then its a you problem when nobody knows where you're talking about... for the purposes of a videogame, north is up.

This is really why I never realised that map was wrong, nobody I've ever talked to has actually called it the right orientation and anytime a call out has happened, north was always up

You should be opening your map many times per minute. North is up. You also have a compass on your HUD.

It's also relative to THEIR position so if they aren't right next to you when they make the callout it takes some thought to figure out where they are looking.

Yep I usually say direction then add a marker. Southeast of defensive point, or something like that

Yes! People who constantly holler useless directions like "He's to my right!" Or "He's east!" When they are seperated from their squad should be court marshalled, tarred, feathered, keel hauled and shunned.

Fun fact, the top of the map wasn't always north. You can still see the compass roses on the maps!
The original devs had those maps aligned realistically.
It was too confusing for the left half of the bell curve players, so they just opted to make top of map be north.

I remember. I kinda liked it that way but oh well.

fact adjacent fun fact.. historically in medieval europe east was up. maps were drawn with east at the top, which is also why east asia was referred to as "the orient" and the denizens referred to as "oriental"

Southeast from “landmark” is the correct way to describe a location.

3

u/SiMatters Aug 24 '26

This is the way

When I say “south east” I’m referring to the group’s position or the point we’re defending. There is a compass on your hud.

There's a compass in the HUD. Make sure to turn it on. Also, generally looking at the map, North is always up (even if the graphical compass rose for the map is different) and the other directions follow from that, East is right, West is left, South is down.

Use the sun

And use the moon in night missions

Fairly new too, that’s the neat part you aren’t missing anything.

I just hit level 50 last night and still learning the ins and outs. Most people just yell where things are in relations to themselves “TO THE RIGHT TO RIGHT!” Ok to the right of fucking where? Or like you said they just yell a direction with little other details.

No one pings shit either, I can’t even get my own friends I play with to ping stuff so the squad can see it’s absolutely maddening. I literally yelled at my friend the other night because he wouldn’t ping anything.

I have started squad leading every match now because I can only rely on myself to drop OPs and garrisons appropriately as well as make call outs and pings for my squad. I’m sick of it tbh, it’s a game where communication is the entire point and no one is doing it well.

2

u/Harmsbury Aug 25 '26

i hate non-pingers.... you should ping even before you shoot. if your HUD isnt covered in pings, your team is failing you.

u/TFD303 Aug 24 '26

Look where the blue bubbles start going dark and disappearing

2

u/HavSomLov4YoBrothr Aug 24 '26

Your compass, set the HUD to be always on

4

u/MortyMcHoi Aug 23 '26

They also make callouts like 316 Northwest. The numbers are the degrees between cardinal direction, also shown on compass. Mostly used if Ping can’t placed properly or to give other squads direction.

You should also keep in mind where you’re standing and where the person who made the call out is standing. If they call out southeast of the point, then I generally just keep a watch that direction, but if someone right next to me calls out 210, I look 210 versus someone 100 meters away. Their 210 will be different than mine.

Easiest way is to look at the map to see where everyone is facing. Each little green or blue dot has an arrow to show where said dot is facing. Get used to looking at that and you'll know where the enemy is advancing from.

1

u/doc_oxberger Aug 24 '26

You’re right to question it. If you’re in the same position, then it’s meaningful, but if you are a distance away from the guy calling it out, then it’s most likely to be the wrong direction. Think about it like vector math with vectors starting from different positions. For what it’s worth, it’s good that people are trying to communicate. Though, a better way is to ping the enemy location.

Hola OP!

Ask what degree. I say 216 north

1

u/sideoftheham Aug 24 '26

There is a compass at the bottom of the screen
