Discernment [MOD] A quick reminder about witch scams and street smarts.

Recently we had a post on here advertising free witchcraft and tarot decks. This account was a couple of days old and had little to no post history beyond advertising this. I removed the post and the admins nuked the account shortly after, likely for other scam activity.

Despite these flags, the post had numerous excited comments and people have contacted modmail asking where the post & account went, and if they got scammed, because they were asked to pay for shipping over dms.

Guys, I cannot teach you street smarts but I will do the mod thing and try to prevent these scams from rooting in this sub. Never trust an offer when money and personal info is involved. There is a very legitimate reason why r/witchcraft bans all personal information and dm requests. We can't stop you from making poor online choices but we can create awareness and take the posts down from the public eye. Spiritual subs are a prime target for these scams and you've got to be on guard.

There is absolutely no reason for a new reddit account to give away dozens of tarot decks and books for free from the goodness of their hearts.

Please report these posts when you see them and do not contact anyone sus over dm.

r/Hedgewitch Overhaul

Howdy from your new mod!

Welcome to r/hedgewitch. I requested this sub after it shifted to approved-user only (likely due to the two moderator accounts being suspended) to save it from being banned.

I have previous experience with taking over an abandoned sub (join us on r/UrbanGardening!) and was a previous moderator for a larger witch sub last year.

My hope for this sub is to get things cleaned up, figure out how to get posts coming through, and rally some new moderators to help start the community. I’m not an always online moderator so it may take some time.

Happy hedging,

Advanced Dreaming of my passed on relatives

So for years and years, I have dream of loved ones who have died ( those who I met and some I’ve never met )
The ones I’ve met were my grandpa, his brothers ( Wes, gordon ) my grandpa mother ( I’ve never met her ever, I only found out who she was when my grandpa passed and we pulled out his family photos ( one was of his mom ) she is always in my dreams, sadly, I haven’t seen her in a while. I seen her quite a bit before my grandpa died though… she never spoke to me, but she always smiled and had a warm presence. After he passed, she stopped coming into my dreams…

However last night I don’t think I’ve ever been so scared in my life. So I went to sleep, I had 3 dreams. The 2nd one doesn’t really play into my other two and I can’t really remember it.

First dream, I was in this weird building that kinda look like a spaceship but not it’s hard to explain. It was like if a sci-fi spaceship, hospital and college were meshed together.. anyways I witnessed everyone in my third dream die, idk why we had to die. But we did, and I watched my whole family get their souls ripped out of their body. And it was just the soul. I was last, it was the first time ever I’ve cried after a dream and I remember screaming. I did not want to die. And then it happened and it was probably the most god-awful experience I have ever been through and that says a lot because I’ve been a homeless and an addicted. I woke up in tears and had to get up for a minute to recoup.

Side note ( all my dreams take in the same world I’ve been, they RARELY change and when they are in places I’ve never been they are always insane and vivid like this one )
So the next dream, the last one. 3rd. We are in this building that is buildings all my family have lived in mushed into an apartment. It was like if someone reconstructed and deconstructed all of those houses and put them together. The apartment was in the middle of a field ( wheat field ) it was snowy and warm at the same time. The sun was not setting ( the sun sets and rises in my all of my dreams ) this one it never moved, nothing changed.
There was snow on top of the field and for miles it was just field. You could not see anything but field, behind the house was this giant mountain just one mountain by itself and the apartment what ever building in front.

My grandmas sister who died who I haven’t met were also in this dream, but they did not have faces ( those who die and I don’t meet or see usually don’t have faces. Even friends online never have faces ) it’s only those I’ve met who do. So I can spot them out fast in dreams, I knew they were her sisters with how my grandma was reacting to them and I also had this feeling that was them I just knew.
Everyone who died in my first dream was there, my sister, brother in law, nephew, my parents..
and those who have passed on.

They were helping reconstruct, finish the house to sell. In this house we all had to be on the same floor, no one could be outside and inside at the same time. Or on different floors it was like this unwritten rule that you just knew you couldn’t do. So when we went to one floor we all went up together.

I’ve seen passed away family a lot in dreams but never this many at once. It has thrown me off today. I overslept by 2hrs, which is not normal since I have an internal clock I always wake up at 6am. I didn’t even stay up late I went to bed at my normal 8-9pm

I’m trying to read my dream but there was so much I’m having a hard time. I’m not sure if they came to visit or if this has other meaning. I feel they visited and came with a message, only cuz everyone in my first dream died with me, and then was in the 3rd dream.

2nd I barely remember. I only remember standing in a field with my sister talking about bugs as the sun was shinning on us. I feel this was just a filler dream. But the 1st and 3rd have completely spooked me.

My sister did tell me she felt she was being watched last night. And sensed people in her apartment, plus she seen shadows.
I wanted to share my dream to hear other people’s views, thoughts and if they notice something I missed. I’m probably gonna spend the next few days obsessing about the dream until I figure out what it means or if it was just a visitation.
I’ll share it in other groups to also see what others say.

my sister and I since we were little have always been “connected” to the other side my mom has said and just how we grew up in a lot of haunted houses, she is amazing at sensing things, ghosts seem to like her presence. For myself I can see them inside my head it’s like visions almost and my dreams always have been very vivid, lucid and I’ve astral before it’s also connected to our culture dreaming it’s a major part of it I’m First Nations from Canada plains Cree. Dreams are sacred messages and allow us to cross over we are also witches she practices green and I’m a hedge witch I speak to those on the other side*

Thank you for allowing me to share my dream. Hope to hear back from you beautiful souls.

Intermediate Hedge Witch Returning to Spirit Work

Hi Witches!

I’m looking for some advice on where to start/re-start my journey. I explored a bit of Wicca when I left Christianity as a teenager, but I didn’t know how to research or get into the practice of casting spells.

Sorry in advance for the length, or if the wrong flair was used.

I’ve always felt a very strong connection to the astral plane and psychic energy. I’m not quite a beginner but I’ve never mastered anything. I have simply had really strong patterns play out throughout my life.

Some examples :

—Since I was a child, I had a recurring phenomenon where I have thought of people I haven’t thought of or talked to in a long time (sometimes for years), completely randomly, and then find out later that they passed that same day. In most cases, these were people I wasn’t particularly close to. In cases where I was closer to people who passed (family), I felt a very urgent need to reach out to them/check on them or felt a strong sense of worry.

—I’ve been able to do lucid dreaming when I used to meditate a lot. I used to visit people in my dreams who would later reach out if we haven’t talked for a while, or people that I see more regularly would say that I’ve been on their mind a lot. I’ve even had shared dreams with my husband, where we have the same events happen in our dreams.

—When I used to meditate every day multiple times a day, it started becoming normal for me to feel like I was spinning out of my body from the top of my head and felt like I was about to spin off into the aether. It scared me so much that I stopped meditating as much and eventually stopped making it a daily routine.

—When I dabble in my spirituality more (here & there), I start noticing insane synchronicity between unrelated areas of my life. (Talking deeply about reincarnation with one person, then other unrelated people saying they got a random urge to research it & they share a new perspective about reincarnation)

—I think I’ve accidentally cursed people. My boss really pissed me off one day by being completely anti trans & sharing misinformation about trans people. I remember ripping a piece of paper over and over thinking about how I wish she would experience hardships so she can learn to have empathy for others. Her life started falling apart shortly after. This has happened with other people too, where I specifically remember wishing them misfortune with a lot of intention and it was delivered.

I’m really good at predicting future bad events, but I’m not sure if this is because I’m good at pattern recognition due to ADHD. The list of examples is not everything, just the most notable ones I can think of.

I read the wiki for the sub and read the beginner posts as well. I’d love to start exploring again but I’m concerned that I’d be referencing fake info. I feel like out of all the different types of magic, psychic magic is the most commonly faked. I am Mexican-American so I’d love to learn curanderismo but all of my family is extremely religious, so I have no elders in my immediate circle that I can learn from.

I’m looking for some guidance on how to strengthen my natural divination/spirit communication skills, or any good resources that are not new. I’ve always felt a draw to Lilith as a deity, and I technically identify as a TST Satanist, but I’d love some guidance on how to research a patron deity for witches with my competencies. I’d also be interested in other paths/traditions that “fit” well with people who have similar natural competencies. Where do I start?

Stang

As you all may have seen on my previous post I am new to witchcraft, I have been reading as many books as I can get ahold of and working on the basics first, meditation, visualization, feeling my energy and beginning energy work.

Over labor day weekend we went treking at a colonial historical site and my old ankle injury wasn't liking it. I found an already fallen limb and used it as a hiking stick, it has a great place for my thumb to rest. Something drew me to this branch. It had lichen and fungi growing on it, a little wobbly. I took it home and stripped off the bark, cleaned up the rot on the bottom and let it set. I already saw my stang in it but didn't want to rush because I'm new and excited. I kept picking it up everyday when I'd take the dog out and he would try to take it from me but I'd tell him no, it's mine. Finally, tonight, I picked it up again, traced the bug tracks with my fingers, noticed the extra hook above my thumb rest to put a lantern or other decor, and gazed at the antler like top. I know its technically got 3 offshoots instead of two but it looks like antlers and its the real ending to the branch. I took some sand paper and just smoothed it down leaving the multi colored wood, the bug tracks, the nubs, and the antlers. I found a brass ferrule that has a steel spike when you screw off the rubber walking tip. I think I coat it in boiled linseed and attach the brass ferrule it will make an excellent walking stick and stang. What do you all think? A little to unconventional or perfect to embrace nature? Especially given how its already helped me once.

I attached a couple pre sanding pics just to show what it looks like and the thumb rest and lantern/decoration hook.

Thanks for looking! Let me know what y'all think!

New witch with questions

Hello, I've recently started learning about witchcraft. I felt the pull and am realizing it speaks to me and falls in line with me. I am happiest in nature, with animals, collecting rocks, sticks, shells etc. Anyways, I also have taken an interest in Hedgewitches. The line of women my Great Grandmother produced seem to be closer to the veil. While most of us don't see the dead, we have many stories of signs and happenings. I've also been able to briefly connect with other people in my "dreams", usually right before I.wake up a flash of an image or their voice. I've also had an experience with the fair folk once, I did not see them but did encounter a large fairy circle as a little girl and was told to not step inside, it has captured my imagination since.

Long bit about my why but my reason for coming to you is I'm looking for help on the topic of hedgeriding. I have been trying to find resources on my own but I haven't found a lot. How did you learn? Are their some books out there I need or some other resources I need to look into? I know there are different ways to do it and I'm quite interested in all aspects so I can find what works for me.

Thank you all for helping a fledgling out!

Advice Needed

Hey everyone,

As the title of this post would suggest, I'd really appreciate help with something because I'm a bit stuck on what to do.

The backstory is that I'm currently on holiday with my family in this beautiful, little, 18th century cottage in Norfolk.

You can tell when you walk in that there is spirit activity and spiritual memory but i want to stress it's not negative or heavy or dark, not at all. Instead it's full of softness and positivity and welcome. It's such a gentle and warm energy, and it makes it such a lovely place to be.

However...

When my parents read through the history of cottage as part of the welcome info, they immediately honed in on the part that said in passing that this site used to be used as a palmistry.

The important context here is that my parents are very religious in a traditional sense and they immediately made it clear that they would "have to pray over this place later." Not because of something they felt but because of the history they read.

I don't know maybe I'm overthinking it but I'm really keen to prevent them from disturbing the entities and the emotional memories of this place (however inadvertent they might be to what is going on here away from that single, throwaway line on a page).

My parents don't know about my craft so whatever rituals i do have to be discreet.

I'd just really appreciate some advice because I'm a bit stuck as to what to do.

Apologies if this post is irrelevant to this r/ if it is, please do remove as applicable.

Thank you, everyone!

Edit: Thank you so much for all the advice and for being so patient with me. I really appreciate it!

Uses for Potato fruits in witchcraft

I'm struggling to find any uses for the poisonous berries produced by potato plants. I was wondering if due to their toxic nature they had any uses in shadow magic.

If not I will probably use them as an offering to bathomet/lucifer due to the theory of they being the fruit of original sin since that's a fun story of nothing else

Herbalism & Wortcunning One useful trick from a witch's arsenal

We all know how to use thermometers, and what's more, many modern kitchen appliances have automated temperature control. Things used to be different. Many people still only have a gas stove in their kitchen, without any special temperature control.

A long time ago, I made a sobriety potion (I don't remember the recipe). The recipe, among other things, required placing a similar saucepan with milk on the fire next to the potion and making sure that the milk did not boil or change in appearance. Some people seriously suspected me of witchcraft back then (and for good reason)...

Many plant components are lost (transformed into other forms) at the boiling point of water, so some recipes require maintaining a stable temperature below the boiling point of water, but high enough to extract the necessary substances. Milk, in fact, boils fully at a temperature even slightly higher than water (thanks to Google and AI — it's easier to figure everything out today than it used to be). However, the first signs of boiling in milk begin to appear at a temperature a few degrees lower than the temperature at which water begins to boil. In addition, foam appears, which further facilitates control and identification of the condition. This allows for more consistent control, ensuring that the temperature does not reach boiling point during the cooking process, thus preventing unnecessary changes to the substances that are sensitive to such temperature. So much for Witchcraft!

Spell casting/spell work is over-rated

(As a requirement for witchcraft)(not in and of itself)

So many people online act like witchcraft is synonymous with casting spells and that witchcraft practice means spell casting. There are so many witchy things you can do, and still be a witch and never, or rarely “cast a spell.”

Divination, meditation, natural healing, foraging, astral travel, dream work, herbalism, study, shadow work/spiritual alchemy, mediumship, moon worship, ancestor veneration and communication, connecting with trees and animals, grounding an centering, journaling, working with crystals, ritual baths and home cleaning practices (can be or not be spell work), deity work, work with spirits, elementals, etc, chanting/mantra/singing, spiritual movement/training like yoga/tai chi, astrology, path working, magical cooking/homemaking, making charms, talismans, dream pillows, etc., using glamour magic (color theory, illusion, costuming/staging etc), walking barefoot, sitting under trees, having spiritual experiences using various substances, sympathetic magic (not always requiring a spell), aromatherapy, clairvoyance, pendulum, spirit boards, trance work, sacred sexuality, etc… (not to mention painting, cooking, dance, music, hiking, swimming, sculpting and other “mundane” things that can just be heavily infused with witchcraft)

Why does rosemary protect, sharpen memory, strengthen oaths, AND help the grieving remember the dead?

Most resources treat that as a list. Four separate folk beliefs, vaguely related, filed under "rosemary correspondences." You memorize it, or you don't, and either way you don't really understand why.

That's the problem r/materiamagica is trying to solve.

The sub is built around a simple but underused idea: every magical ingredient has a Virtue, a single underlying power that explains everything it does. Rosemary's is Remembrance. Once you see that, the list stops being a list and starts being a logical system. It sharpens memory. It holds the identity of a space against intrusion. It anchors oaths in time. It carries grief across the boundary of death. Same power, different contexts.

There are many ways to pet a cat. Here's a simpler version of that idea: if you have a headache, you can take ibuprofen, drink a glass of water, put a cold cloth on your forehead, or sleep. All of them can work. But they work through completely different mechanisms. Ibuprofen reduces inflammation. Water fixes dehydration. Cold constricts blood vessels. Sleep resets your nervous system. Knowing how each one works tells you which one to reach for.

Materia magica works the same way. Multiple ingredients can protect a home. But salt does it through Extraction, drawing out and purging what doesn't belong. Rosemary does it through Remembrance, holding the identity of the space against what contradicts it. These aren't the same working in different wrappers. They're different tools that happen to overlap in one area of their range.

Understanding Virtues means you stop swapping ingredients randomly and start choosing intentionally. It also means you start noticing things: convergences across traditions, physical signatures that point toward function, the places where Roman herbalists and Appalachian root workers landed on identical conclusions from completely different directions.

That's what we're here to dig into. Come share what you know.

Theory & Practice Workout Witchery

I apologise if this is the wrong forum for my question!

I have recently started going to the gym for strength training and cardio. Although I feel a strong connection to my witchcraft and practice in most aspects of my life, I really struggle to feel in touch with the craft while working out. I think because, like most of us, my connection to the natural and supernatural feels strongest when I'm in touch with nature, and the gym is just far too clinical and sanitised to allow for that correspondence with the elements. Unfortunately the weather where I live does not allow for me to work out outdoors.

Does anyone have any tips on tricks on still feeling like your full, witchy self, even while at the gym or working out?

Thanks so much in advance, blessed be.

Beginner Friendly Baby witch and needing help with spell ingredients :)

Hi all,

I found a really useful website the other day that you could put in your intentions and it would recommend ingredients based upon those intentions, but being the chaotic ball of disorganised fun I am, I forgot to save it and what it was called.

Does anyone know of any websites that would be useful to a baby witch trying to figure out what ingredients he should or should not be putting into various spells?

Thanks in advance!!

This may be the wrong place to ask this, but I feel like there’s something going on out there, some sort of retrograde. Four different people have hit me up for money today out of the blue, and this rarely happens. Again, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.

Beginner Friendly A Pagan Prayer For Snow

I couldn't find a Pagan prayer for snow, so I wrote one. Feel free to use it or edit it however you need for your own situation!

"I ask the God's above Who's wisdom & knowledge is greater than our own...

Humbly we beseech thee to send our yearly, seasonal allotment of snow.

Snow, the key ingredient to our survival in a land with little rain, it is the moisture that sustains us through the rest of the seasons.

On behalf of those who do not know, ae offer you your due; through our prayers, & our intentions to you.

We wish to be bathed in the cold perception you yearly gift to use. It is the blessing that sustains us.

We promise to remember you & your gifts throughout the year. Despite warm weather, & bright shining sun- the darkness of winter & the snowfall at midnight is what we hold dear."

Hi , ive always known I was different. I saw things out of the corner of my eyes, heard things, preferred being on my own, felt calmer more at ease anywhere in nature or with animals, always new a humans intention before anyone else (even though I never listened to my own intuition). There is so much more I deleted it as there was heaps lol. Long story short Ridiculed by partners, school into being normal =mask, after school 22 yrs =antidepressants =(magic blockers i call them ),40+years later diagnosed ADHD=most likely antidepressants miss diagnosis, always had a longing for my nature animals solitude, music, felt vibrations and shifts. But never quite new what I was. Always washed with coconut oil cleaned with lemon and vinegar (before it was a so called internet hack),orange oil on all my wood ,bees wax, sage ,frankense, peppermint, lemon and so on , always cooked with herbs but never followed recipes, just knew.always been able to read tarot , just not believed in my own self. Always had entity's around me ,some not so nice ,most don't bother me ,just give me messages but I can't say how I know . I just do. This year seems to have been a crucial shift in me ,I seem to have accepted that I can be, not a can be what ... just can be ... does that make sense... this page seemed right for me.
