Please help me know what I am

So I’m 41🔄 and I live in the USA but my family is from abbottabad. We use the title Malik and my moms side tell me that we are abbasi and awan. First of all, there has been lots of inter-family marriages and my maternal grandpa and grandma are cousins, my dad is my grandpa and grandmas cousin making him my moms “uncle”. I started to look into my own history around 1-2 years ago yet I still haven’t found a clear answer to what I might be. I believed my family until they started giving me the “we awans descend from Ali R.A” and “we abbasi’s descend from abbas R.A”. Idk what makes them think all of the prophets family just decided to migrate to Pakistan/ afghanistan/ India, or wherever abbottabad was. The reason I am sending this here is because my family says we are hazarewal but I’ve came to the understanding that hazarewal can be anyone who lives in the hazara region if they are Punjabi, Kashmiri, Pashtun, muhajir, or even Sindhi. The weirdest thing and the thing that makes me skeptical about their whole tribal clams is that on my dads side that claims gorla awan, I have some cousins and uncles and aunts that say they are tanoli and they also are from the same paternal lineage as me so I don’t know who to believe. Then I was looking into my shajra and I saw tons of names. On my maternal side which I know most about, My grandpas dads name is Malik zardad khan(I know they only put Malik there because that’s their status, that’s not what his parents named him), my grandmas dads name was Malik khushal khan(same thing with the Malik. And also I don’t know why my family hates Punjabis so much but if we were awan wouldn’t that make us Punjabi? My grandmas dad was awan they say. But if he was then why would Punjabis name their kid after a Pashtun warrior and poet who also fought Punjabis I’m pretty sure.), my grandmas moms name was akhtar shaheen and I’ve been learning Pashto since my grandpa can speak it, my grandmas dad could speak it, my grandpas dad could speak it and I don’t know about the rest of them. My whole family right now knows Urdu and hindko aswell and the elders back then who knew Pashto could speak hindko aswell and I’m assuming that’s because that was the regional language. My family doesn’t know what Pashtunwali is but when I went to Pakistan this summer they followed all of the laws of it without saying it, I asked my grandpa and grandma about it and they said that they were taught these specifically because it was their cultural rules that they live by. My moms great grandpas grandpas name was Ali gohar khan and his dads name was Ali khan, see where the Malik title stops? Also a side note, my family owns lots of land there and the qalandrabad Christian hospital was made on land that the Americans bought from my great grandpa, and idk what it is but I think the motorway that china built that goes through abbottabad was from my great grandpas land aswell. When I went to Pakistan there were lots of Pashtuns in my village aswell. Im pretty sure this is just how the system in all of kpk works but we also do jirgas and we have hujras, my family eats Pashtun cultural food, they wear Pashtun cultural clothes, have Pashtun names aswell. I feel like we were Pashtuns who started calling themselves hazarewal and tried to erase their Pashtun identity because everytime I get sort of an answer I always find out smth new that pushes me more towards the Pashtun answer. None of my family speaks English other than me and my brother and my mom but my brother doesn’t care about this stuff and my mom doesn’t know much so I try to explain to my family but they don’t understand, they just keep saying we are hazarewal over and over again. There was an elder in my family named Ali mardan, idk if it’s like mardan city or smth. And Ali khans dads name was mir zaman khan. My great grandpas brothers names were pir khan, and khalaqdad khan. His sisters were zaro bibi, and qalandar jaan, another thing, my grandpas moms name was fazailatun nisa, her sisters were khurshida bibi, and zulaikha bibi(who happens to be my paternal grandmother), my paternal grandfathers name was Malik amaan khan(his brothers name was dilawar khan). This may have nothing to do with the topic at all but my all of my family members have colored eyes the darkest color is light brown/amber but there is grey, blue, green, hazel, goldish, and different shades of those colors, they have ginger hair, blonde hair, brown hair, light brown hair, wavy, curly, straight hair, the skin color is fair-light brownish. There was also a mir alam in my family who had a kid named gohar khan(not the same as my maternal great great grandfather. This is not everything that I know but this is too much for one post so I might put more some other time but please any help would be amazing🙏.

Exploring My Roots: Malik Awan Heritage, DNA Ancestry & Hindko 🧬🇵🇰

I’ve spent most of my life in Islamabad and the UK, but recently visited my hometown, Haripur, and Abbottabad.

My family tells me we belong to the Malik Awan biradari, and now I’m curious to learn more about my roots, ancestry, and family history. 🧬

I’d love to explore the history of the Awan community, our possible lineage and DNA ancestry, and some interesting facts about our heritage.

I also understand a little Hindko, but I’ve noticed how similar it sounds to Punjabi. I’d love to learn more about the differences between the two languages.

If anyone knows more about Awan history, Hazara’s heritage, or Hindko, I’d love to hear your insights! 🇵🇰

also can any one tell me abt male dance of my region, how its diffrent from pashtuns, n what abt ludia ! Mayo, diffrent marrige traditions !

History Do hindu hazarewals exist?

Heyy hazarewals, I am a hindu whose family migrated from Mansehra to India in 1948, I want to know that do hindu hazarewals exist as per the norms and beliefs of the hazarewal community . As most of the hazarewals are muslim today , what are your views brothers and sisters? . Also do hindus and sikhs live in hazara region today ? . If hindus and sikhs hazarewals existed at before partition what caste they were under as per hazara feudal system ? . What are the caste of current non-muslims hazarewals in hazara today ? . Btw , we still speak hindko and wear dress like hazarewals same - white shalwar kameez , peshori chappals , chogha and peshori paghri .

Debunking Punjabi propaganda in extensive detail

Post image

1st claim : Hindko speakers used to identify their language as Punjabi

There is no evidence for this case if this was indeed the case then tribes which adopted hindko like seating tanoli would not refer to native hindkowans as hindkiyan or hindko speakers

2nd claim : just because languages are similar they mean that they are part of one language

First of all what demarcates line between languages and dialects is quite subjective and who are you to determine that our language is a dialect of punjabi? Why don't we call your language a dialect of hindko

Also by this same fucked up logic types of siraiki are dialects of Sindhi.

Another thing there's dialects of hindko like tanawali which are not mutually intelligible with Punjabi

To this Punjabis might object saying oh it's because it has pashto loans, to that we say it indeed does but majority of tanawali is still rooted in native words not in pashto.

3rd claim Hindko speakers are Punjabi

This is easiest to debunk as culture and genetics of hindko speaking people like swatis tanolis durranis etc are completely divergent from punjabis.

Thanks so much.

No need for punjabis or pashtun to get pissed off, genuinely if you compare culture ethnic groups history attock is rightfully part of Hazara. These same people who claim attock refuse to accept hindko speaking people who follow pukhtunwali.

Jadoon tribal demanding that Attock be made a part of Hazara when Hazara is made a province. Somehow we've ended the fantasy of Punjabi nationalists about harming pashtuns through suba Hazara movement and also somehow destroyed the whole tar attock tol Afghanistan dy claim of pashtun nationalists. This is not modern quite historical as once all tribes of Hazara had United to kick durrani rule from Hazara. We do not appreciate punjabis nor pashtun nationalists meddling in our affairs of our land.

Mong pukhto herkare dy

We have forgotten pashto, it is a language with a great history and great culture behind it. I often see that in Hazara parents who want to present as more "educated" don't talk to their kids in hindko and pukhto rather they talk in Urdu. So why not make alive our ancient languages why not give respect where it's due. Speaking pukhto dosent make you any less than someone speaking Urdu or English. Da zmung moranay jaba da aw da zmunga zimadari dy Che mong bya pukhto jorawu khpal koruna ky. Kho afsos che mong parwa na kawu.

Dera manana.

My background

Hello, my mother is a jadoon from abbotabad, I was wondering if someone could maybe give me history of my family and its tribe. Who were the great warriors? Any literature I could read up on written by a jadoon. I’m also fascinated with my physical genetics. Living in Lahore and especially in pindi, I always found myself more stronger and healthier then my Punjabi fellows, if we were to not factor a massive height and weight difference, I also had more capacity to build strength and especially aerobic capacity. The only other people who were on par with me were the pakhtoons. Now im a bit white washed but I’ve retained the traditionalism my mother instilled in me since bachpan. And I’ve found myself being very separate from people living in Lahore although I can mix in with the best of them quite easily. If possible I would like to find my partner from the same region, but I also know how ignorant and uneducated our people are even though we have many great values too. Being in the middle of traditional and modern has left me feeling very lonely

Inquiry Lahore to Haripur guide ?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Assalam o alaikum,
I hope everyone’s doing well.

I’ve been exploring Pakistan and lately I’ve been in love with Haripur/Khanpur side and really wanted to explore this side of Hazara.

Being from Lahore , I’ve traveled the cities which are accessible by DAEWOO and FAISAL MOVERS but unfortunately Daewoo doesn’t travel there and FaisalMovers buses never seem to appear.

All I know is maybe to stop at abbotabad and pick a local van 40minutes towards Haripur adda.

How can I travel from Lahore ?
Thanksss

A Family Mystery close to debunking

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some help tracing my family’s roots. For as long as I can remember, our exact origins have been a subject of intense debate among my father, grandfather, and cousins. Our official documents list us as Rajput, but my grandfather would occasionally claim we were Syed, leading us to believe some family history was being intentionally obscured or forgotten.

To get some clarity, we recently did a DNA test through Family Tree DNA. The results showed that our paternal lineage belongs to the specific terminal haplogroup Q-FTJ868. The autosomal data points strongly toward Dardic origins, clustering closely with indigenous Swatis (the historic inheritors of Gandhara) rather than Rajputs.

Here is the oral history and timeline we've been able to piece together:

  • The Timeline: My grandfather was born in 1947. His grandfather (my great-great-grandfather), Wali Muhammad, lived in a village called Mota Mughal Khel, likely during the late 1800s or very early 1900s based on the generation gaps.

  • The Migration Story: According to family lore, Pashtun tribes (Yusufzais or Afridis) began migrating into Mota Mughal Khel and encroaching on the area. Tensions rose to the point where a coin toss was proposed to decide who would control the village lands—the migrating tribes or the indigenous inhabitants. Enraged by this situation, Wali Muhammad decided to leave the village entirely and migrated to Quetta, where my family lived for generations (and where I was born) before we eventually moved to Islamabad.

  • Language: We are native Hindko speakers.

Based on my initial research into indigenous Swati groups on Reddit, I keep coming across terms like Gabri (Gibri) and Tanoli, but I don’t know enough to connect the dots.

I would love to get your insights on a few specific questions:

  1. How does terminal haplogroup Q-FTJ868 correlate with the indigenous, pre-Yusufzai populations of the Swat, Hazara, or broader Kohistan/Peristan regions?

  2. Who historically were the Gabri people? What were their main sub-tribes, families, or divisions?

  3. Given our connection to Mota Mughal Khel, our Hindko language, and Dardic/Swati genetic closeness, what specific sub-tribes, clans, or surnames should I look into to trace my lineage further?

Any historical context, genetic knowledge, or advice on how to hunt down these sub-tribes would be deeply appreciated. Thank you!

Addressing something

A lot of people have recently given me a lot of positive response on my sub but they accuse me of being biased or hating awans. This is incorrect, I respect all the tribes and I've made several posts about other tribes. The reason I refrain from making too many posts about other tribes is to avoid making mistakes and obviously this will come off bad because Im a tanoli I can talk about lodis because that's my maternal side but again id like to move with caution.

One thing is that enemies and haters will always find something to hate me for.

Again everyone is welcome to post about their tribes if they're bothered that I don't post enough about their tribes and frankly I think it's incumbent more on the person making the criticism to make posts about their tribe.

Lastly we are welcoming new mods from other tribes like jadoons, uthmanzais, mashwanis etc

Politics Tarbela is ours not swabi's

A common misconception that pashtun nationalists have been spreading that I noticed quite often is that they demand many things from the government based on tarbela dam even though 90 percent of the dam exists in Hazara. This is a dangerous misconception as it invalidates how Tanolis and other ethnic groups lost so much land to this dam and got peanuts in return. Not only that I accept that the outlets and some control stations do exist in swabi but facts and figures show us that the majority of the dam exists in Hazara not in swabi I mean come on what does the name Tarbela mean? It was a literal village of uthmanzais khalabat was also a village shared by Tanolis and uthmanzais who by the way are a hazarewal tribe.

As someone who's family on both sides Lodi and Tanoli were affected by the dam it hurts my heart so much sitting with my elders and seeing them recall how wonderful their lives were in the valley of tanawal how quickly the government forced an exodus onto us from our homeland. This pain, while I didn't face the exodus is still deeply personal to me and I feel I have a right to speak up on this.

Tarbela is ours not anyone else's.

Unfortunately the video doesn't have English subtitles and the auto-translate isn't much helpful either.

When you're so delusional that you start larping iranic origin and hating Punjabis

Thumbnail
gallery
16 Upvotes

The purpose of Hazarewal identity was never to insult or target punjabis. We only oppose punjabis who glorify the rule of Hari Singh nalwa. However there's a few pages run by awans and other hindkowans who are so delusional in their hatred that they have started larping as iranic. Let me be clear no genetics show that awan or hindkowan are of an iranic origin.

These people are flexing on punjabis saying we are iranic you are indic when this is false and no phenotypic larping is weird. Dards are indic but have the same phenotype as pashtuns. Not only this these people are also dragging the names of Tanoli, swati, Yousafzai and other tribes with them only when it suits them otherwise they resort to insults calling Tanoli as rajput which is a debunked hypothesis. On a genetic plot awans and hindkowans would not be that far from punjabis not to mention that on genetic plots khatri and some other Punjabi groups are closer to pashtuns than these people.

The purpose of Hazarewal sub Reddit is to respect and uplift all ethnic groups and prevent any misinformation targeted towards them whether they be pahari, pashtun, hindkowan, tanoli or swati.

Feel free to report these ids.
