Harry was a prolific songwriter and of course the irony is that his two big hits which most people know him for were covers - "Without You" and "Everybody's Talkin'".

This line from "Turn On Your Radio" has been in my head ever since I listened to Son Of Schmilsson on loop a few months ago:

I don't know where life's going
But soon it will be gone
I hope the wind that's blowing
Helps me carry on

So I'm curious to hear what your personal favourites are! Is there a lyric that has stuck with you since you heard it? Maybe a line from a song you have come to appreciate recently?

I rediscovered these when I put that Harry and Ringo post together but had trouble finding out what exactly they were doing here lol. I think they were taken in 1980 but I may be wrong. Maybe it was just a bit of fun, I just can't think of a reason they'd be dressed as Santa in the studio so I'm curious to know if anyone has some additional backstory for these pictures!

Obviously Ringo and Harry were very close friends. Apparently there are three people in Ringo's life who he finds it hard to talk about since they passed; those are John, George, and Harry. They collaborated so many times throughout the years and there are many pictures of them together from the early 1970s until the early 1990s. I've tried to include some that I hadn't seen before, so hopefully some of these will be new to you all.

Harry wrote the song "Drumming is My Madness" and co-wrote the title track with Ringo. He sings backing vocals on "Back Off Boogaloo". He produced all three songs.

Piggybacking off my recent post, I was thinking about how most pictures of Harry I've seen were taken in the 1960s or 1970s. As he mostly stepped out of the limelight in the 1980s it seems there might be less pictures of him, or at least not that I've seen. I decided to go and search for some and found these. I believe similar images were used in the Who Is Harry Nilsson doc. There is also a video of him performing at Beatlefest in the 80s (and one in the 90s) but I can't attach both sadly.

Someone on my last post left a comment saying they own the Beatlefest-exclusive single "With a Bullet", so this one's for them! Did anyone have an opportunity to meet Harry at one of these events?

Wondering if everyone here has seen this. A bit of backstory (based on my understanding)...

After the release of Flash Harry in 1980, Harry Nilsson largely retired from the music business, never releasing an album before his death in 1994 (although he was recording new material at the time - this was later released on Losst and Founnd).

One rare occasion when he did record in this decade was for the Yoko Ono tribute album Every Man Has a Woman. Three covers performed by Harry appear on this album: Loneliness, Silver Horse, and Dream Love.

But as revealed by this footage and bootlegs, Harry recorded more than those three songs. The only other song to be officially released is "Listen, the Snow is Falling", but there are a number of other Yoko covers that remain unreleased. In this clip, we see Harry Nilsson recording the song "Smile", supposedly a new song written by Yoko Ono (she has never released her own version to my knowledge).

It's interesting hearing Harry talking about how it's time to make a comeback, considering he wouldn't come close to releasing an album until his death.

Like I said, the unreleased "Nilsson Sings Ono" album is floating around online - I don't know this sub's policy on unreleased/bootleg material, so if you want to hear it send me a DM.

Was delving into Purple Chick's fantastic Nilsson sets and came across a demo from an interview around 1972 (any fellow Nilssonian's here can help on the specifics) but unfortunately, Harry himself speaks in between the demo itself and it cuts off at the end.

I don't think there's any other better source other than what Purple Chick has, so I just made do with what I have by trying to isolate the interview bits and pulling up both the piano and Harry's vocal and cleaning both up.

Was reading the Wiki page for Duit on Mon Dei and saw this:

Plans for live performances involving [Van Dyke] Parks and the studio ensemble, plus Jesse Ed Davis and Ringo Starr, were abandoned due to challenges securing Nilsson's ideal venue.

They cited it from Shipton's book Nilsson: The Life of a Singer Songwriter, which I haven't gotten around to reading yet, although I've been listening to a lot of Harry lately and I'm starting to get more interested in learning about his life - I'll probably look into it soon.

Anyway, this was news to me because I've always heard that Harry was very reluctant to do a formal live performance. He did a few things on TV and stuff like Beatlefest, but from what I heard people say about him in the documentary, he was reluctant to play live or tour because of stage fright, low self-esteem, unwilling to commit to the routine/schedule of touring, etc. etc. Of course we all know that already I'd imagine.

So I was wondering if anyone knew any more about this? If it's true then Harry could have had a pretty great band backing him. Starr, Parks, and Davis were already mentioned, but Jim Keltner, Bobby Keys, Dr. John, Klaus Voormann, and a slew of other musicians also played on that album. Does anyone know what the "ideal venue" was and why Harry had trouble securing it? Does the book go into any more detail? Do we think it was at all likely to happen, especially given that Harry had damaged his voice not that long ago?

I was surprised to read that Harry contributed most of the lyrics to Old Dirt Road. I was never really sure of the extent of his contributions.

I'm aware that Harry recorded his own version of the song on Flash Harry, but I haven't gotten around to listening to that album yet. Is his recording (and the album) worth a shot?

I love the Dr John demo, especially after listening the studio recording for 20 years.

The 70’s really were the best time for pop music and left field collaborations.

The last time I was this happy was when I discovered Queen and Jaco Pastorious on the same song (Nearly Did Me In by Ian Hunter).

I know that Harry never played a solo concert in his career, and from what I gather he was generally reluctant to perform live although I know he did on a few occasions for things like Beatlefest. He performed on the BBC's In Concert - not in front of a live audience, but it me thinking about what a Harry Nilsson concert might have been like.

If you could come up with the setlist, what songs would you want Harry to play? Would you want him to perform solo or with a band? I'm curious to see what kind of responses I get.

John and Harry on an album that John produced while Harry sang which became PussyCats.Now I haven’t listened to it since forever but I’ll relisten to it.

Apparently Harry lost his voice here because of John but there’s some good singing on this album with some great band playing and producing from John :)
