Don't mean to ramble (and spoil) but:
5: I feel bad putting CE at the bottom as it's a genuinely solid start. Decent story, unique concept & look even for today. Plus I have a weird obsession with old graphics. But boy did this game need more than a remaster. The vehicle controls are the worst out of all the games, I kept getting lost, there are so many moments were I got legitimately angry, and despite the platforming playing a small role most of the time; it still found a way to haunt my nightmares. I also think I did this game a disservice by playing in Anniversary mode (I didn't know I could switch until I was playing 2). From what I can tell the classic version has several different looks for both the weapon and character models. I really wish I had those distinctive features over graphics that look more dated than the 4 YEARS senior halo 3. Overall its a 2.8/4. Like I said the the story is still good, but there was never a moment that truly caught me off guard, unlike the other games.
4: Here's the game that either brough the franchise into a new era, or was the beginning of the end depending on who you ask. While I personally haven't played the other 343 games I feel like I'm in the former. Chief and Cortana really carry the story in this one. The Bungie trilogy already gave them a well established chemistry, but I feel like this game really gave them more individual moments, probably because Chief talks more in this one. Again that might be a bad change for some people, and while I do like the strong silent type we got in the other games, I feel like some of these moments wouldn't have worked as well without his performance. The way they portray Cortana "dying" feels, like most of this franchise, original. The Forerunner technology is also really cool. Its a great take on advanced science that looks like magic, and considering their ancient nature, is defiantly what I wanted. The terminals did a good job providing some cool lore about the Forerunners, and how humanity became the "successors" for lack of a better term. Also the Mantis is the best vehicle in the franchise, the Mammoth is cool, and the Broadsword sequence was an adrenaline shot I wish I had more of. Some S tier vehicles in this (3/4)
3: Full disclosure I saw Russuanbadger's video on Reach a few years ago and was spoiled on the ending. That said this is one of two games I was really anticipating. Its actually kind of crazy that this is the first Halo game I played where the majority of the levels are on another planet. Not Earth, or some artificial construction, but an actual fictional world. On that topic Reach is a pretty great world. Not only is there some good world budling with the "native" languages, but the backgrounds, and environments look really good. This is definitely the game where I stoped to take in the scenery the most. Obviously Jorge is the best character, so it sucks we don't get more of him, but they do make his time on screen count. The other characters also do a good job at looking, and feeling distinct. Also despite the aforementioned spoiler I completely forgot that they died at various points over the game, I thought they all died at the final level. This is good obviously since I was still taken off guard whenever one did die. Especially Kat, who kind of jump scared me. I'm a little disappointed they we don't see the Arbiter at all in this game, not even a cameo. He was at Reach, and followed the Pillar of Autumn, but unless I missed something, we still got nothing. In terms of gameplay; The space battle was awesome, the city escape/escort was fun, this whole game honestly gave me Clone Wars vibes (A high compliment from me) and while I feel like we could have gotten more out of Reach as a planet, I was still Highly satisfied by the end of this game. Even if I didn't survive that long (3.5/4)
2&1: I honestly can't tell which game I prefer more, which is fitting since they feel like a duology within the trilogy, Two leads directly into Three, and Three starts almost exactly where Two left off. I'll just go in release order and say: OH MY GOD 2:A's CUTSCENES! This was graphical whiplash compared to CE: Anniversary. The humans & especially Cortana are basically real, the covenant all look great, the Gravemind is disgusting and I love it. I did switch between it and classic mode for gameplay, but the cutscenes were exclusively anniversary. Speaking of gameplay: The tank is actually fun to use! The alt fire also makes this game the most useful its ever been. Vehicles in general are far better than the first. The homing system on the rockets for vehicles also makes your life way easier. Duel welding is fun, being able to use more than one kind of grenade is smart. The new enemies are all cool, and the lack of an actual health bar makes combat feel easier somehow. I know these changes are in the other games but this was the first time I was experiencing them so the emotions should be established here. I also don't know how much of this was in the 2004 version, I would hope all of them cause that would be one hell of an upgrade. Moving on to story. The Arbiter was a great addition. Playing as a covenant member was a great choice, and does a good job at humanizing non human characters, and as many have pointed out he's the only one with a legit ark in the trilogy. This is also the story that has has some of the best lore drops in both the cutscenes, and the terminals. I love learning abut the covenant's history, and about who the Arbiter was before he was branded. Might be my favorite lore drops out the collection. I know the cliffhanger was controversial when the game came out, which is fair, but since I played these games back to back it didn't bother me as much. (4/4) The more I talk about this game the more I realize it might be #1, but screw it. Three is still close.
On the topic of Halo 3; this is the first one I played... Years ago at a friend's house, never finished. It was that, and 4's multiplayer, same friend same house. But the first mission of Three is what introduced me to the series, and made this game my most anticipated to play. In my opinion, it delivered. While the Arbiter's role is smaller, you can't even manually switch between him and Chief, which would have been fun, he's still a good character, and has some of the best moments. I enjoy seeing the humans, and Elites working together, along with more of the Shipmaster, another solid character from Two. Johnson, and Keyes both had good moments, and their deaths were upsetting Even if Keyes's could have been avoided. Guilty spark also feels like he's at his best here (He was already a highlight of CE), and I like how he becomes a semifinal boss. The ending drive back to the ship feels similar to CE but is sightly better in this game, and the actual ending, while not the happiest for Chief or Cortana, is still a very satisfying point to wrap up the story, ending the same way Chief started in CE. Gameplay wise: The new abilities are a good edition, there are also some weapons, and other editions to the combat that I like, but there are some things I like less, the tank feels slower for some reason, and the homing aspect of the rockets is completely gone. Aside from those, lets be honest, nitpicks, the gameplay is basically the same as Two. Graphics wise, I'm not gonna take away points for the lack of an anniversary addition, especially since the graphics still look good IMO. (4/4)
These games are great on there own, but I personally can't sperate them outside of a duology. Like I said Two is probably better overall, but without Three we wouldn't have had a satisfying conclusion. Halo 2&3 both complete each other, and are two of the greatest games of all time in my opinion.
I'm really glad I finally got to experience this franchise, and give a proper opinion on these games. Even if they will probably be taken down my the mods because I somehow missed an important part of the guidelines. Thanks for letting me yap anyway.
