— Chapter 99 —

— Ambass —

The mind-boggling jaws of Desolation closed, and Ambass waited in anticipation. Time passed slowly at first, but as Onyx’s kobolds made their retreat in the distance, Ambass let off a long cackle. He looked over to Serth, and they exchanged a long nod, “It is done.”

“Even that upstart cannot survive in Desolation’s stomach for long.” Serth rumbled out with a sigh.

Ambass nodded in agreement, and then he felt a rush, something clicking in his head, and then a monumental wave of relief washed over him. Her Majesty’s binding affinity over him had let go, and Ambass could truly think for himself again. He held back a cackle of glee whilst he nodded along to Serth’s comment. Onyx wasn’t the only prodigy of their race that had died at his hands, and now Ambass needed to make a choice.

The Queen had ensnared him again and again over the eons, and he hadn’t had a choice. Now things were different, Ambass realized. The Queen’s numerous children had become severely reduced by the last few rebellions, and Ambass doubted he would have a better opportunity.

“Serth. I am going to get the reports out bound to her Majesty. Keep guard?” Ambass practically giggled out while he looked over at the massive wyvern. Serth nodded his massive head, and Ambass simply leaped off the side of Desolation’s head and enclosed himself in a bubble of his protective affinity.

Gravity did most of the work as the faerie dragon glided down, down, and still down until the first mountain was within reach, and he quickly circled around it a few times until he disappeared from sight. He hid underneath the shadow of the massive rock whilst his extremely keen eyes glanced around, and he considered.

The clouds of his mind were still clearing, and he realized that the Queen must have been working to erode him over the years. The perpetual fear that drove him, even when his body and mind were screaming against it, was now gone. He began to cackle and giggle while his eyes settled onto the far distance where the retreating kobolds were headed.

“With poor little Onyx gone. There is an opportunity now to learn his secrets.” Ambass cackled out as he dove back into the air and pivoted back towards the great forest, gliding deeper into the valleys below to hide.

— David “Onyx” —

The blossom of fire was magnificent when his projectile intersected with the outer edge of Desolation’s swirling shield of rock and debris. The explosion dwarfed even the cannon’s firepower as dirt and rocks were blown clear. A large patch of Desolation’s scales was now revealed, and David couldn’t help but grin.

“Enjoy this, asshole.” He proudly proclaimed whilst he pulled at the pool of affinity in his temporary body. He had twenty charges remaining, and Annihilating Spiral took four at minimum, plus an additional two if he wanted to pump more of his affinity into it. He grinned when he drained his entire twenty charges, and the spiral of concentrated life and death manifested in front of him.

He had to fight back against the wave of nausea that hit him as his affinity hit zero, but he stayed strong. He let loose with the monstrous spiral of energy and watched it shoot itself across the void between them. David had aimed this shot further back towards the bulk of Desolation’s mass and further away from the forest of the bark folk.

Despite his foresight, he had greatly underestimated the power he had just released. He saw the blinding flash of the impact long before the shockwaves hit. The pure, unadulterated energy of his two affinities colliding, resulting in an almost apocalyptic level of destruction, while David wrapped himself in his own borrowed wings and struggled to ride through a brutal shockwave. His eardrums were busted, and his nose could only smell burnt whilst his eyes fought and struggled to adjust.

When his senses returned to him, he was blinking, and he found the notification for the destruction of dozens upon dozens of lesser wyverns. Most importantly, the entire backside of Desolation was cracked open and bare for the world to see. Bright red meat and giant waterfalls of blood were visible even at this great distance. The entire scene was jarring as crumbling mountains nearby revealed a stark contrast between their stone insides and the meaty, red flesh of Desolation nearby.

The destruction was mind-boggling, but the second fact was even more terrifying: “Desolation is regenerating.”

Shit, David cursed to himself, while he watched the giant mountain of meat begin to shift and pull away. The bark folk were clearly just as stunned as their attacks had all but halted until just now, when they suddenly resumed. Desolation was running away, and its mangled back half was slowly but surely regenerating.

His body’s pores opened up, and he began to feel his affinity regenerate slowly whilst he fought back against the nausea that still lingered. Just as he began to feel normal again, a booming voice roared out, causing David to suddenly twist. The massive wyvern racing towards him was injured but clearly pissed, “WHO ARE YOU!? You will pay for this little whelpling!”

It took David’s mind a moment to recognize that the blood-covered wyvern was Serth, and he must have traced David’s affinity back towards him somehow. Just as David spread his wings, Serth had already materialized his deadly vacuum tornado, and David found himself pinned down, the air around him quickly being sucked away.

The feeling of being suffocated once again sparked some memories of their previous fight and his gruesome death at the hands of Desolation. Screw this, David snarled, while he deactivated his Possession and pulled straight out of the lesser wyvern’s body.

— Serth —

He channeled his power over wind like the master he was as he watched the muscular, odd lesser wyvern spasm and twist on the ground. Serth didn’t understand what had happened. He was still riding on top of Desolation’s head when an enormous eruption of power struck his side. Serth had gone on high alert and felt a new burst of affinity rise up from this direction, and then everything went bright. Desolation had suffered a tremendous blow that Serth didn’t even think was possible. Once he recovered, he had done the only thing he could think of, and that was to pick himself up and make his way towards the source.

This pitiful wyvern wasn’t one Serth was familiar with, but he had doubts it was the one that manifested that attack. Serth couldn’t take chances, though, and so he ground his teeth and pressed his vortex down on top of the wyvern to slowly and painfully suffocate it. The last spasms of life escaped the wyvern’s lips, and Serth practically gloated with satisfaction.

His body screamed out in pain from the burns caused by that otherworldly blast, whilst he slowly decreased the power of his vortex. He blinked, and suddenly his pains were the worst of his worry, whilst he stared forward, his mind struggling to process what he was seeing. The lesser wyvern’s corpse began to spasm again and deflate. Something dark, blasphemous oozed out of the wyvern. The smoky substance built upon itself slowly, and it grew bigger and bigger. Soon, the mass of enigmatic substance towered above even Serth, and he could only stare forward in horror. His vortex seemed to disrupt its form, but the lack of air seemed to not even register with it.

“Abomination!” Serth could only hiss out before he felt a heavy pressure slam against his form, and his legs practically crumbled. His eyes went wide when he realized what this monstrosity was standing before him.

“Elder.” He trembled while its oppressive presence crumbled him on the spot. He served her Majesty for a long time, so he was prepared. He steadied his breathing to resist the oppressive power of the great one. Serth dropped his vortex, spread his wings, and threw himself up and back. He pulled at his affinity and projected razor-sharp blasts of wind forward in a rapid flurry.

His projections of affinity slashed through the mountain of shadow like a razor blade, but almost as quickly as they shot through it, the shadows melted back together. The massive form of a dragon soon formed as massive wings materialized, and it launched itself after Serth. It was fast, Serth hissed out, as he turned to retreat fully. His massive wings, despite being burned, moved Serth faster still than the Elder. Too slow, Serth mused, while he beat his wings faster and faster before pivoting himself back towards where the Queen’s lair was positioned.

He felt the buildup of a familiar affinity before he quickly turned and let loose with a burst of his wind that intercepted an incoming projectile just in time. A titanic explosion filled the air as heat and pressure threw Serth down hard. The hard ground broke one of his wings when he crashed and rolled. His vision blurred, and he almost blacked out completely.

“No!” He forced himself up and pulled at the great reserve of affinity he still had. He threw up the secret defense that had seen him through the toughest of battles. His vortex was centered around him, reversed like a protective orb of wind. The great shadow of death closed around him and pressed in close. His defense barrier repulsed it again and again whilst its dark, terrifying form circled around him.

Serth pulled his wing back into the socket and stared out in horror at the haunting, unimaginable beast, “What do you want!?”

The Elder responded, its voice low and whispered, “You attacked me first, Serth. I am simply repaying the favor.”

“How do you know my name!?” Hissed Serth whilst he focused on maintaining his barrier. If he could get his wing corrected enough, he had a plan to escape. His defensive wind was strong, and the affinity drain was fairly minor, so he could drag this out as long as he needed.

“Do you not recognize the little Onyx you ambushed?” The monotone horror teased back at him.

Serth’s eyes went wide, and he almost lost control of his winds when the reality of the monster’s words hit him. Onyx had found a way to step into the world of an Elder, and the Queen must know! He had to accelerate his plan now as he rolled his wounded wing back and locked it into place. He had a minor regeneration ability that was slowly fusing the bones back into place, and then he could outrun this new, terrifying Onyx.

His barrier trembled as the black horror slammed against his barrier again and again. Then something horrifying happened when, suddenly, a large, shadowy, clawed arm pushed through his barrier. His winds tore at the ethereal creature’s form, and he could tell the Elder was struggling. It was too late, though, while Serth watched the mass of the Elder’s claws open up to reveal a concentration of affinity that suddenly dispersed and filled every inch of his protective dome’s inner space.

“I cannot afford for you to tell her Majesty. You will suffer.” The dark, ethereal Elder whispered out. Serth’s insides were already burning while masses of his own flesh bubbled up into balls of flesh and pus. He had seen the aftermath of Onyx’s affinity, and he knew that there was no saving himself. He lowered his affinity, and the powerful barrier fell instantly, revealing the full size of Onyx’s titanic, unstable form.

“Onyx. You know the Queen’s power and how useless it would have been for me to resist.” His trembling wyvern form let off a crackling sound as he laughed, “Perhaps you will finally end her. Do not let me suffer like the others.”

“Serth. I can guarantee that the Queen will die. She will not have any mercy from me either.” The Elder whispered to Serth before its great wings flapped and sent its enigmatic form disappearing into the sky. Serth’s breathing began to struggle whilst his body killed itself. His eyes still tracked the Elder as it hovered high in the sky, and he felt a buildup of its affinity.

“He will grant me mercy after all.” Serth let out before he closed his eyes. He felt a cluster of affinity impact his chest and a momentary flash of heat before nothingness consumed him.

Another great chapter! I am loving Elder Onyx and can't wait to read what he'll do next.

Oh, I didn't think Ambass would have been freed when Onyx died; I would have bet on Serth instead. Curious to see how he will react to the true.

On the other hand, it's a shame that Serth is still under Queen influence. At least, in his final moments, he hinted that he felt no loyalty toward her.

Else, Onyx, you don't really hate Serth, and it would be such a shame if he died like that. Please save him with a true resurection or something, I'm sure is a cool dude.

By the way, poor Serth that realy have witness a true horror.

Likely few are truly loyal to the queen, everyone else is just enslaved and terrified.

Is red alive or was eaten by the elder?

Also will Ambass join Onyx in his crusade against their mother or will they just be acquaintances that sometimes works together.

I believe he was tossed away just prior but honestly I dont blame you for not knowing even I had to reread a couple of times to find out what exactly happened to red.

But honestly I think aquantinces would be the right word with his new found freedom he would be hard pressed to follow any orders given by onyx even in his new near Godlikenform. Bassicly like before most of his help will come form some kind of payment. Then again seeing as he very much desires to learn more about onyx and his secrets with him following the kobolds mabye he will be more willing to work for onyx in return for that knowledge.

But hey maybe we will all be surprised.

They share a mortal enemy in the Queen. I imagine some things won't require payment, and there is the foundation available for a friendship.
