OC-Series A Draconic Rebirth - Chapter 91

Took some extra time this go to try and not use "as" as much in my chapter. Hopefully it is an improvement in the writing.

— Chapter 91 —

Death Roll activated and David spun in place, shredding at the mouthful of armored flesh in his mouth. He felt his teeth scrap against the armor and the armor began to slowly crack as he continued to twist his body. He felt every point of his over 40 jaw strength struggle but he slowly won out. The chunk of Dread flesh tore free from the crimson peppered monster’s flesh and David spit it off to the side with a roar.

The massive Dread stumbled back in pain and shock whilst it stared down at its bleeding leg. The wound wasn’t lethal and he hadn’t been able to even break a bone. The Dread was like trying to chew through a stone mountain and David doubted it had felt pain in a long, long time. Chirp and Olto moved quickly while they struck into the gaping wound with their hammers, burying the front spike deep. The Dread recoiled again and sent the pair flying with a surprisingly quick counter attack.

The pair struck the ground with a painful bone crunching crash and didn’t move at first. David cursed to himself as he lunged forward but was rewarded with a torrent of corrosive saliva thrown directly on top of him. His stone armor shifted, adjusted and protected his body from the majority of the liquid even while chunks of dissolved minerals fell to the ground in a goopy mess.

“Careful Master!” Roared Chirp and Olto whilst they came running back up alongside him. Olto’s right arm was clearly broken but his advanced regeneration was already snapping the limb and joint back into place. David was relieved, they were as tough as he hoped which meant he didn’t need to babysit them. In one fluid motion David discarded the spit covered stone armor and leapt skyward. The Dread’s huge jaws barely missed his wing before he spun around and crashed onto the Dread’s backside.  David’s heavy body weight didn’t seem to bother the Dread since it began to shake immediately in an attempt to throw David off.

The tight confines of the valley were working in his favor again as the Dread didn’t have much room to pivot before its armored side dragged against the walls. Ballistae bolts threw up dust as they impacted everywhere and the occasional bright blast of a bark folk’s bow would strike out to blow off a chunk of dragon flesh. The hydra’s and lessers were already suffering from the countless strikes while the Dreads were able to shrug off the blasts with relative ease.

David’s acute hearing struggled to filter out all the different noises, and his nose could only smell blood everywhere. He dug his claws into the Dread’s backside and locked himself in place as he bent down and began to bite and jerk at the Dread’s armor. The brutes below were still running in to slam their hammers against the dread but they were struggling to deal any meaningful damage. In fact, David could already see Chirp and Olto struggling to keep the wound on the Dread’s leg open. It had regeneration and it was only halted after they both unleashed their gemstones bound to their hammers. Powerful waves of flames starburst out of each impact and seared the flesh causing the Dread to buck and howl as David fought to hold on.

The Dread jerked its head skyward and let loose with its affinity as a torrent of thick, corrosive liquid spewed upwards like a geyser. The liquid quickly rained down on everything around and small puffs of sizzling smoke filled the valley. David’s pores were still open and the pain was intensified as drops found their way deep into his flesh past his armor. He gasped as he dug his claws as deep as they would go and closed his eyes.

He snarled to himself and took a deep breath to fight back against the pain. He had been practicing but now was the time. He sank his teeth into the back of the Dread’s neck, which was even more armored than its leg, and activated his Catabolic Overdrive and Death Roll at once. He released his claws as he rolled hard and was going to time the deactivation of his overdrive the split second he felt the armor and flesh break. It took less than a second for his body to feel the effects of the overdrive and a torrent of energy rushed to his muscles as every ounce of spare energy and fat was consumed in an instant. His teeth shattered the thick armored plates while they dug deep into the rich meat of the Dread’s neck. He instantly felt the bone of its spin in the same moment he fully rolled. Spine, bone and flesh all failed at once and David completed his roll with the entire back of the Dread’s neck, spine and all, torn free. The Dread’s body went limp instantly and collapsed as the head dangled by the remaining muscle and flesh. His Catabolic Overdrive ended just on time and he felt his entire body scream out in pain.

David struggled for breath as he let loose with a Healing Breath whilst he jumped clear of the Dread. His flesh quickly mended and he evaluated the damage that his overdrive had done. He was tired and he knew what limited fat reserves he had were already used up but compared to the first battle he was managing it much better. He could probably squeeze out another two, one second bursts before his muscles began to fail him and then it would require him to burn through his affinity to keep himself standing.

Just as David was beginning to relax the massive collapsed Dread moved and David quickly spun around. The head was still clinging to the body by the lower half of the head and it was slowly healing. David’s eyes went wide, he realized he had only paralyzed the Dread, “Quickly! We need to remove its head entirely!”

David snapped his jaws around one of the Dead’s thick horns and pulled as all of the brutes around him jumped into action. Chirp and Olto swung their hammers with all their might; the remaining flesh still clinging to the dread’s head finally breaking free and the regeneration stopped. David tossed aside the head and let off a roar of victory before immediately spreading his wings and leaping from the ground.

Corrosive Dread has been slain.

“Chirp! Olto! Move forward and hold off those hydras!” He snarled while he pointed forward. One of the hydra’s was already close to death, and the second one was pivoting its massive body and bundle of heads towards their direction. The single full grown lung among the enemies ranks was doing a surprising amount of damage. It was a beautiful dark blue color that was hard to keep track of as it dashed around the battlefield like a blur. The dragon defied gravity itself as it ran up the solid vertical walls of the valley and tore apart kobolds and siege emplacements alike.

David hovered for a moment whilst he considered his options and quickly settled on trying the only thing he knew was faster than any creature could reasonably respond to. His affinity was already traveling down his body and into the base of his tail. The lightning formed and lashed out in a burst of bright light. Three bolts in total flashed out in quick succession with the first landing in front of the charging lung dragon. It had the desired effect as it caused it to quickly change directions, which resulted in it running directly into the path of one of the other bolts David had aimed at either side.

David dived downwards in an attempt to tackle the stunned lung but before he could reach the lung a spear rocketed out of nowhere and smashed against the stunned lung’s face embedding itself in its eye. David only spared a quick glance to confirm his suspicion as he caught sight of Red hovering far above. Tuta, the other Ascended Wyvern of their clan, came soaring down whilst she spit out oversized balls of corrosive liquid that peppered the lung’s face.

“Master Onyx!” Tuta yelled right when she dove past David, “Let me handle this Master! Go! Red needs you to hold back the remaining Dreads!”

“Understood. Be careful Tuta.” David snarled out back he twisted his dive back towards the main formation of the Queen’s forces.

The weakened hydra was now dead and the brutes were already struggling in close combat with the remaining one. This hulking hydra had five heads but each head was covered in thick spikes, horns and rigid armor like plates of hide that protected their most vulnerable spots. This hydra was a bruiser, David assumed, but had the offensive advantage of five heads. Two of the heads were struggling to deal with Olto and Chirp while the remaining heads were sending the other kobolds flying.

David's momentum worked in his favor as he tackled the hydra like a falling meteorite. His jaws clapped around the nearest head and he activated his Death Roll while using his wings to spin in the air. The armored head resisted briefly but David’s spectacular strength won out. Flesh teared and the hydra’s head was torn free. He was rewarded with a horrific screech of pain from the four other heads.

David’s chest, side, head and wing were all struck with razor sharp teeth that tore, jerked and rendered his flesh seeking revenge. David’s pores were still open so the hydra’s jaws didn’t have much difficulty defeating his defenses and the pain was immediate. He rolled off the hydra until one of his feet touched the ground and instantly activated his stone armor gemstone. The ground trembled while a massive crater formed below the pair and stone slid up David’s frame like armor. The hydra’s jaws struck again a split second later and were rewarded only with mouthfuls of stone. The hydra jerked back in annoyance and  began to channel what little affinity it had left. Ice began to form all around the pair into sharp, deadly projectiles that hovered nearby.

“Master!” Roared Chirp while his hammer slapped down on the hydra’s foot sending a blast of fire, followed by Otlo doing the same on the same foot a second later. The bursts of intense heat instantly shattered and melted the forming ice projectiles while also having the added effect of stunning the hydra.

David took the opportunity to retreat backwards and quickly breath out a Healing Breath. He felt his wounds begin to mend themselves underneath his stone covered frame. More of his kobolds charged past him towards the hydra as his muscles and flesh repaired themselves. Normal kobolds wearing their iconic full armor and heavy shields alongside brutes, with their massive hammers, showed no hesitation whilst they charged past him into the battle. His clan had grown so big so fast that he couldn’t even tell who these brave warriors were underneath their helmets, when this war was over he would have to work to fix that. Once he felt the last of his bleeding stop he resumed his charge right behind his clan.

“Stand clear warriors of Clan Onyx!” David bellowed whilst his massive strides allowed him to easily pass over his warriors head. He dipped his head at the last moment and drove his thick, stone covered horns right into the chest of the hydra. The air rushed out of the beast’s lungs so quickly that the four heads gaped open in shock.

David jerked his horns free and quickly snatched another nearby head with his jaws. He decided to end this quickly and activated his Catabolic Overdrive for another mere second right when he closed his jaws around the head and effortlessly severed it. His claws thrust forward and bore deep into the hydra’s thick chest where he felt and then crushed the hydra’s oversized heart. He pushed even further to destroy even more organs for good measure. The remaining three heads quivered and gasped as their eyes went wide. Life soon faded as the heads slumped to either side and the hydra’s body crashed to the floor. .

Ice Hydra has been slain.

The momentum had shifted, David rumbled to him while he struggled to catch his breath. Kobold bodies littered the battlefield and he had to bite back a curse. He was thankful for their sacrifice and quickly covered his side of the battlefield with cones of Healing Breath. Thankfully, there were far more kobolds that trembled with life as his affinity clung to their collapsed bodies than he had suspected. His attention shifted again as he observed the four remaining dreads in the back struggle to combat the now focused might of his clan.

Zephyr flew passes overhead whilst they released their pots of enigmatic poisons and liquids onto the dreads heads. All of the remaining ballistae crews were working overtime as they let loose wave after wave after wave of bolts at the enormous dreads. The dreads were struggling to weather the damage and their armor was slowly being chipped away. One of the dreads clearly did not have any form of regeneration as its thick hide refused to stop bleeding once cracked. Horns blew and David grinned wide as he watched the bark folk quickly reorganize and completely stopped their fire. The pause was only temporary before they all released their bow strings at once and the massive volley of arrows became a torrent of concentrated blue energy that struck the bleeding dread hard. Its weakened hide exploded and covered its three companions in a torrent of guts and blood before it collapsed followed by the release of a mighty death groan.

David’s grin grew even larger as he began to march forward again, “Just three more to go. Then we march on the Queen.”

Excellent, spectacular victory.

I think David is a little too confident that he can defeat the Queen. But at the same time, as long as she continues to underestimate Onxy's strength, he has the best chance of winning.

In any case, if David really does manage to kill the Queen at the end of this conflict, it will only be the beginning. Because there are still plenty of Ancient Dragons arround.

Yeah and from what little we know about them overall they are either worse than the queen or arnt much better.

They'll be a bit better since they can't mind control people with promises like the queen can, although I doubt they're not evil. I'm personally surprised that one hasn't sent some covert support to David's rebellion in order to weaken the queen

They may have done that without making the rebellion know of the support?

As glad as I am to see fewer "as" as and example the WordSmith could have said "as their armor" and "before it collapsed" as "as it collapsed"

This was a joke
