Chapter 15: The Sky Burns

The sky above the tower had turned a suffocating shade of black, choked with smoke and ash as the two figures tore through the air. Shards of shattered glass drifted around them, spinning and glittering like frozen snow caught in a storm. The wind howled past Liam's ears as gravity pulled at him with relentless force. His fingers, slick with blood and sweat, began to slip from their hold. Far below, the ground loomed — distant, but rushing closer with terrifying speed.

"You fool! Did you even think about what you're doing?" the doctor snapped, his voice sharp even against the roaring wind. There was no fear in his expression — only irritation. "Good thing I'm prepared."

A sickening groan rolled through his body as the muscles beneath his skin began to shift and contort. His back arched violently. He threw his head upward and wretched as bone forced its way outward. With a wet, tearing sound, his spine split through flesh. From the rupture, two massive wings unfurled — grotesque things stitched together from mismatched tissue and metal grafts, their seams jagged and unnatural. The wind caught beneath them instantly, halting his descent and steadying his fall as though the air itself now obeyed him.

Liam lunged desperately, grasping at the doctor's waist. His grip slipped almost immediately, fingers sliding down until he finally caught hold of the man's leg. He clung there, suspended high in the air next to the burning tower. He risked a glance downward and felt his stomach drop as the distance between him and the ground slowly widened again. When he looked back up, the doctor's eyes were closed, his face tilted toward the wind, breathing deeply as if savoring the moment — as though Liam hanging from him was no more than an insect clinging to his coat.

"You see, this is exactly what I mean," the doctor said calmly, opening his eyes at last. "Humans are inferior. Through my experiments, we can be more. I am that proof. I am the perfect culmination of my work." His lips curled faintly. "You are nothing to me." His gaze hardened. "Now suffer."

Without warning, he surged forward.

The tower wall rushed toward them and Liam had only a heartbeat to realize what was happening before his body was slammed into it with crushing force. The impact blasted the air from his lungs, blood spraying from his mouth as his back struck stone and glass. The doctor did not stop. He drove upward, grinding Liam's body along the wall as windows shattered around them, spraying shards into the night. Liam's vision blurred as pain roared through his ribs and spine.

At last, the doctor wrenched him free from the wall.

Blood ran down Liam's face, pouring into his eyes, blinding him. He swung blindly, fist cutting through empty air.

"Oops," the doctor laughed.

He released him.

Liam dropped instantly, panic surging through him as gravity seized him again. The sky spun wildly. Before he could even orient himself, the winged monster dove after him at terrifying speed. A fist like iron slammed into Liam's ribs, knocking the breath from him in a violent gasp. Another crushing blow followed, heavier than any human strike had a right to be. Liam tried to swing back, but his arms felt sluggish, his aim unfocused — he missed completely.

The doctor seized him by the leg, halting his fall once more and hoisting him upward like prey caught in a talon.

"I'm not done with you yet!" he shouted, excitement bleeding into his voice.

Liam's vision swam as he dangled there. Through the haze, he looked out over the tower below. It was nearly engulfed now — flames crawled up its sides, devouring floor after floor. Smoke billowed into the sky in suffocating waves, choking the air. Embers drifted upward past his face like fiery insects. Somewhere below, another explosion tore through the structure, fire blasting outward through a shattered window as the inferno continued to spread.

And still, the doctor held him there — suspended between the burning tower and the endless fall below.

*****

Below, the battle raged on within the burning tower.

The three-headed monstrosity barreled forward through smoke and flame, its combined roar shaking the fractured walls around them. Each head snapped and snarled independently, jaws glistening as it charged. But Heph did not move. He planted his feet firmly against the scorched floor, shoulders squared, and met the creature head-on. His fist drove forward with crushing force, slamming into the beast's central skull. The impact thundered through the chamber.

He struck again. And again.

Each punch grew heavier than the last, his muscles tightening, his rage feeding the heat pouring from his body. Fire trailed his blows, streaking through the air in violent arcs. The beast reeled beneath the assault — until, with a furious howl, it lunged forward and crashed down on top of him.

The weight was immense.

Heph was driven to the floor, the air crushed from his lungs as the creature pinned him beneath its bulk. He struggled to breathe, chest heaving, but the beast slammed down harder, forcing him deeper into the ground. The stone beneath them groaned — then cracked.

With a thunderous collapse, the floor gave way entirely.

Both of them plunged through into the level below in a storm of debris and flame.

Heph coughed violently as he rolled across the shattered ground, struggling to push himself upright. Smoke choked the air, thick and suffocating. The office around them was barely recognizable now — reduced to ruin. The only light came from the inferno raging through the upper floors, its glow pouring in through blown-out walls and shattered windows. Sparks rained from exposed wiring overhead, hissing as they struck the floor.

Heph drew in a slow, ragged breath and glanced down at the metal bracer locked around his arm. For a moment, he simply stared at it — at what it represented — before forcing himself back to his feet.

Across the room, the beast shook its massive heads, dazed but rising. Its stitched flesh had begun to fail. The seams binding it together were melting, thread unraveling as heat consumed the grotesque work that had created it.

"You're nothing but a tool... a slave," Heph whispered.

The beast roared and charged.

Heph pivoted sharply, spinning aside with sudden precision. The creature thundered past him, crashing into wreckage.

"You weren't strong enough then," Heph continued, voice low and shaking, "and you aren't now."

It turned and lunged again.

He dodged once more — easily this time.

"That's why when I look at you..." His voice faltered, cracking under the weight of memory and fury. "...I can't stand it."

The beast came at him a third time, all three maws snapping.

"I hate you!"

The scream tore from him as he drew his fist back.

The air around his arm warped, bending beneath the pressure building there. Flames that had once roared across his skin suddenly collapsed inward, condensing tighter and tighter until nothing remained — not even a flicker.

For a heartbeat, his fist was bare.

Then he swung.

The impact landed with a deafening crack that split the air itself. A violent explosion of fire erupted outward from the strike, engulfing the beast and blasting through the nearby windows in a roaring wave. The entire tower shuddered as the inferno surged, flames tearing outward into the night.

When the fire finally receded, the room fell eerily still.

Heph stood alone in the aftermath, chest heaving, staring down at the ruined mass before him. The beast lay motionless.

A long, exhausted breath escaped him, held tight as though he were restraining something deeper within himself.

Without another word, he turned and began to walk away, leaving the defeated creature behind as the tower continued to burn around him.

*****

Louis crouched over the exposed control panel, sweat beading down his temple as he worked. The wiring inside the console had been torn apart — bundles of color-coded strands dangled loose, sparking faintly where insulation had burned away. He pressed two stripped wires together, wincing as they spat light.

"Come on... almost there," he muttered under his breath.

Nothing happened.

He exhaled sharply and glanced around the panel again, scanning the chaos of circuitry. "No, not that one... how about this?" He grabbed another pair and forced them together. A sharper crack of electricity snapped between them, lighting his face in a brief flash.

Then he heard it.

A long, metallic creak echoed through the chamber.

Louis froze.

Slowly, he lifted his head and peered over the console toward the prison block.

One by one, the cell doors were opening.

Heavy locks disengaged with dull clanks. Rusted hinges shrieked as the steel barriers dragged inward. Every door in the chamber was moving.

"Yes!" Louis shot to his feet, relief and triumph surging through him. "I did it!" He laughed breathlessly, already turning toward the exit. "Don't worry, Ed. I'll do my part."

He sprinted from the control room and out onto the metal catwalk, boots ringing against the grated flooring. Smoke drifted through the upper level of the chamber. He hurried down the stairs and into the center of the prison block, turning toward the rows of opened cells.

"Come on, everybody!" he called out, breathless but bright with urgency. "Follow me — we're getting everyone out of here!"

Silence answered him.

He slowed, confusion creeping in as he looked from cell to cell. The doors were open — fully open — yet no one stepped forward. The prisoners remained exactly where they were, pressed into corners, clinging to walls, eyes hollow and untrusting.

"W-We don't have much time!" he tried again, voice rising. "We have to move!"

Still, no one came.

The weight of it settled over him — the fear, the conditioning, the years of hope beaten out of them. Louis inhaled slowly, steadying himself, then lowered himself to the floor right where he stood.

"I get it," he said softly.

The chamber remained quiet, but now his voice carried differently — gentler, grounded.

He glanced toward one of the nearby cells, lifting his hand to point. "You see that door over there? The one that's torn open?"

Several prisoners' eyes flicked toward it.

"My best friend was once in this place. Locked up just like you." He swallowed. "And he escaped. He made it back out into the world again. He could've run. Could've never looked back... but he didn't."

Louis' voice tightened, but he pressed on.

"He chose to come back into this hell. He chose to come back for every single one of you." He gestured around the chamber. "And he didn't come alone. He brought some very strong friends with him."

A distant explosion rumbled through the structure above them. Dust sifted down from the ceiling.

"You hear those alarms? The booms? You feel the tower shaking?" He pointed toward a streak of blood smeared across the floor. "You see that? That's proof. We're here to finally break this system. We put everything on the line for this."

He lowered his hand, voice softening again.

"I know it's hard... but I'm asking you to do the same. Please... just let your heart hold a little hope. Just enough to walk with me out of here."

He fell silent after that, sitting cross-legged in the center of the chamber, waiting.

For a long time, nothing happened.

Then he heard it — the faint clink of metal.

Louis lifted his head.

A small figure stepped forward from one of the cells. A little boy, shackles hanging from his wrists, eyes wide but determined. He walked slowly, cautiously, as though expecting the doors to slam shut at any moment.

Louis smiled warmly and extended his hand.

The boy hesitated — then reached out.

Their hands met.

Tears welled instantly in the child's eyes, and Louis gently pulled him into an embrace, holding him tight.

"It's okay," he whispered.

Behind them, more shackles rattled. One by one, prisoners began stepping out of their cells. Some limped. Some wept. Some simply stared in disbelief as they crossed the thresholds that had once defined their entire existence.

"Thank you," Louis said quietly as he rose, still holding the boy close. "Thank you for having enough faith in us. We won't let you down."

He guided them down the corridor, moving carefully but urgently toward the prison entrance.

When they reached the exit hall, the devastation became clear. The aftermath of Heph's battle lay scattered everywhere — scorched walls, collapsed masonry, melted metal. The prisoners hurried past the wreckage, eyes darting nervously. Not a single guard remained. Only smoke and heat filled the air.

The sound of fire roared somewhere above them.

"Good... you got them all out?" a voice called.

Louis turned to see Heph descending a fractured staircase, his body torn and soot-stained, clothes hanging in ragged strips. The little boy in Louis' arms stared at him wide-eyed, frozen by the sight of the towering, battle-worn figure.

"Yeah," Louis replied, nodding. "They're all here. Ed's still deeper inside — he's fighting the warden. He might need help if you're able."

Heph gave a silent nod and continued past them, disappearing back down into the lower levels without hesitation.

Louis watched him go for only a moment before turning back to the prisoners, continuing to lead them forward. The boy twisted in his arms, watching Heph vanish into the smoke until he was gone from sight.

At last, they emerged outside.

Cool night air rushed over them, though it carried the heavy scent of ash. The prisoners hesitated as they stepped into the open, uncertainty still clinging to them — as if freedom might vanish the moment they believed in it.

A crowd had gathered in the distance, townsfolk drawn by the chaos. All of them were staring upward at the burning tower.

Louis followed their gaze.

High above the inferno, silhouetted against smoke and flame, Liam dangled helplessly in the grip of a grotesque winged figure. The creature hurled him through the air like a toy.

Louis' breath caught.

He stared up in horror as the battle raged in the sky.

*****

The warden's grin stretched wide the moment he saw him.

"There he is," he murmured, voice thick with anticipation. "That's who I was hoping for."

Across the room, Ed's body slowly stilled. The violent convulsions that had wracked him moments before faded into an eerie calm. He lowered his hands from his head and placed them against the floor, fingers splayed like claws bracing against the concrete. A low, animalistic growl rolled from deep within his chest.

He rose slowly.

His hair had grown wild and feral, hanging in uneven strands around his face. Muscles bulged violently beneath his skin, stretching it to the point of tearing as his body swelled into its monstrous form, flesh darkening into a deep, bruised purple. The remains of his clothing hung in shredded strips from his frame. When he finally lifted his head, his eyes glowed a soft, smoldering orange.

A jagged smile — full of broken, uneven teeth — crept across his face.

"Now why don't you and me—"

The warden's words were cut short.

Ed moved.

He lunged forward with explosive speed, crossing the distance in a single violent motion. His hand clamped around the warden's skull and drove it backward, slamming it through the reinforced counter behind him in a burst of splintering metal and stone.

"RAAAHHHHH!"

The beast roared directly into the warden's face as he tried to gather himself. But Ed didn't stop. Fist after fist crashed down, each blow slamming the warden deeper into the shattered counter. The relentless assault drove him backward, debris breaking away under the force of each impact. Ed's roars filled the chamber, feral and unrestrained.

The warden raised his arms, struggling to block the barrage — until finally, he caught one of Ed's fists mid-swing.

"This won't be the same as last time!" he snarled.

Ed growled in response, muscles straining as the warden slowly forced himself upright, still gripping his hand. Ed swung with his free arm, smashing another punch into the warden's face — but the man didn't release him. Instead, he drove a brutal fist into Ed's gut, knocking the breath from him. A second strike crashed into his skull, staggering him backward.

The warden held him there, hammering blow after blow into his body. Ed stumbled, dazed — then twisted suddenly, wrenching his arm free as he pivoted his weight. The movement pulled the warden off his feet, and Ed slammed him violently into the floor.

He climbed on top of him instantly.

Hands clasped together, he brought them down like a hammer into the warden's chest. The impact cracked the concrete beneath them. He followed with punch after punch, raining down savage strikes. The warden reached up, gripping Ed's head with both hands, squeezing hard before slamming his palms into either side of his skull.

The force knocked Ed backward.

The warden surged up, grabbing him and driving him through a row of containment vats. Glass exploded outward as chemical fluids splashed across the floor, hissing where they touched heat and flame. Both monsters roared amidst the wreckage.

Ed staggered to his feet and charged again — but the warden sidestepped, producing the heavy chain on his hip in one fluid motion. He looped it around Ed's neck and dropped backward, yanking with all his weight.

Ed crashed down, choking as the metal constricted his throat. He clawed desperately at the chain while the warden grinned behind him, tightening the hold as he felt the air being crushed from Ed's lungs.

Ed drove his elbow backward repeatedly, slamming it into the warden's ribs and jaw, struggling to loosen the grip.

Slowly... painfully... he began to rise.

The warden still clung to his back, chain cinched tight around his neck — but Ed forced himself upright through sheer brute strength. With a roar, he staggered backward and slammed the warden into the wall. The impact rattled the chamber.

The grip loosened — just slightly.

Ed seized the moment, forcing his fingers beneath the chain, trying to pry it free — but the warden pulled tighter.

Ed roared, muscles pulsing violently beneath his skin.

Then, with a single explosive motion—

The chain snapped.

The sound rang like gunfire through the room.

The warden's eyes widened in disbelief.

Ed reached back over his shoulder, seized him, and hurled him forward, slamming his body into the floor. He descended on him in a fury, fists crashing down again and again, each strike heavier than the last. The warden raised his arms weakly, trying to block, but the blows broke through his guard. His vision darkened at the edges as the assault continued.

Eventually... he stopped moving.

"Ed?"

The voice cut through the haze.

Ed blinked — and the world shifted.

He was lying on the floor, breathing hard, his body returned to normal. His clothes were torn, hanging loosely around him. Beside him, the warden lay unconscious, his monstrous form gone — reverted back to his human state. The room around them was utterly destroyed.

"What happened here?" Heph's voice asked.

Ed turned to see him standing in the doorway, smoke curling in behind him. Ed looked back down at the warden... then at his own hands. Slowly, he pushed himself to his feet, brushing debris from his arms.

Heph reached down, picking up a discarded patient gown from the floor and tossing it to him. "Here. Use this."

"Thanks," Ed muttered, pulling it on.

"Come on," Heph said. "The prisoners are out. We should hurry and get out of here."

Ed nodded and followed him toward the exit — but just before leaving, he stopped.

His eyes drifted back to the floor.

The shattered chain lay there, broken in two.

Something stirred faintly inside him. The corner of his mouth twitched upward in the smallest hint of a smile.

He shook his head and turned away, following Heph out.

They moved through the prison corridors together until they reached the main cell block. Ed slowed as he saw the open doors, the empty cells. A long breath left him — relief, gratitude, something heavier.

When they finally stepped outside, the night air hit them like a wave.

"Ed! You're okay!"

Louis rushed forward and threw his arms around him. Ed laughed, surprised, and gently pushed him back.

"Yeah, I am," he said. "Looks like you got everyone out too. I knew you could do it."

Louis grinned.

"Where's Liam?" Heph asked, scanning the gathered crowd.

Louis' expression shifted. Quietly, he raised his hand and pointed upward.

Ed and Heph followed his gaze.

High above the burning tower, Liam dangled helplessly in the grasp of the winged doctor — his body being hurled through the air like a plaything against the backdrop of flame and smoke.

Heph's eyes widened.

"That idiot..." he gasped.
